WI-FI Connections! Color Cartridge Use Rate!

    1. WIFI – Random connectivity, two different laptops, sometimes one connects but not the other. Same issue with home Wi-Fi, retail store Wi-Fi, iPhone hotspot, and HP WI-FI direct print. Ethernet and USB connections print fine. Printer state is reported as off-line. Color cartridge level status does communicate via WI-FI with HP Smart, etc. 2. Color LaserJet cartridge levels indicate we are getting about 50% of the estimate number of printed pages per cartridge (HP 202A). For people that do not check this information and simply reorder cartridges when needed, HP should be making a killing on money just because of their advertised specs for estimated number of pages per cartridge – 1300 pages – which is actually about 700 pages. 3. I have spent 6 hours trying to get phone support from HP. At my first try, we had a bad audio connection and she could not hear me on my iPhone. The second time, our line was dropped shortly after we started talking, the remaining 3 times I remained on hold until I received a message to call back at another time. As Best Buy support, I spent most of the day either being on hold or being transfered to a diffent person. I was finally told to bring it to a store. I did. There was nothing the Geeks could do since I did not buy their support. The color cartrdiges needed a few months of use to see that the usage rate was so high. This was well beyond the BB 15 day return window. Arg! What has happened to HP? This is not the same company that developed the first scientific calculator to replace slide rulers or the HP1000/HP9000 company of years past.

      Hello there,

I'm so sorry to hear that the printer isn't maintaining a steady connection to your network. I can fully understand your disappointment and I assure you that this is far from the seamless experience that we intend on providing. With that said, let's try a few things to remedy this.

First, I'd recommend taking the recommended steps in this 'Offline Printer' document:
      - Windows: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04249080
      - Mac: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04249334

With regards to any wireless issues, the following troubleshooter should help: hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=Printer_Does_Not_Maintain_Wireless_Connection.net

I have a few suggestions to try for lowering ink consumption. To start, I recommend using the printer's draft mode, as this can often improve ink usage. Following that, you could also set the printer to print black and white only.

If you believe there's an issue with the cartridges themselves, I do hope you'll consider giving HP Support another try. You can give them a call at +1 800-474-6836 between the hours of 8 am - 9 pm ET. To speed up the process a bit, I recommend gathering this information beforehand:
      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Your case number (from prior contact with support)

    DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER

Note: We have had this printer for 14 days and I'm returning it tomorrow. The software for this printer is terrible. We have four computers connected to this printer in our house. Every single time we want to use the printer, it says the printer is offline, OR we start the print job and the printer switches to offline in the middle of the print job before starting the print job over again. And again. And again. Without ever finishing the job. We constantly have to run the HP Printer Doctor program to reconnect the printer, and even then it doesn't work most of the time, so we unplug it and plug it back in (which only *sometimes* fixes the problem). I've uninstalled the software and reinstalled it multiple times. We even ordered a new router for our home WiFi network because the HP help articles online said we needed to assign the printer a static IP address. When we called our ISP tech support number, the representative laughed at that idea, and then suggested we just try a newer router instead. Seriously, that static IP address suggestion is ridiculous and NO ONE has time to be fooling around with IP addresses when every other brand of printer on the market runs with a simple software install. I wish I'd never bought this printer. I can't believe I paid over $300 for it and it literally never works. Also, in case you CAN get it to work, the toner stinks and it's noisy when printing. Plus the toner cartridges have drained much faster than I thought they would. I plan to return this and buy another Canon inkjet. I'd rather spend more on ink and have a reliable printer than deal with HP software issues every single day.

The print quality is fantastic and the document feeder/scanner is the best I’ve seen in a long time! The scan process was so simple, I thought I did something wrong. I clicked the button to scan, and the papers just fed right through as if it wasn’t doing anything! However, I found that the documents were scanned perfectly at a very high resolution and showed up on the screen in seconds. This is a much simpler and faster process than any of the HP printers I’ve had in the past. The printer was easy to set up! All I did was take it out of the box, put it on the table, pull off three pieces of tape, put in paper, and plug it in! It printed perfectly. The software set up was also incredibly easy. There is a simple link that I entered in the browser and clicked continue. From there the wizard detected the printer installed the software and printed a test page with just a couple mouse clicks. Set up went fast with no problems! I literally was printing from out of the box in less than 10 minutes! This printer was definitely worth the money, And, I was surprised at the quality of the printing and scanning as well as the ease of set up for such an inexpensive color laser printer! If you’re interested in a color laser printer that auto-duplex prints and scans then I do not think that you will be disappointed with this choice! It’s definitely worth looking into and I would definitely recommend it!

This is a very good, all-rounded, all-in-one color laser printer/scanner/copier/fax with built-in LAN network and WiFi connections. It functions very well and has a touch screen to navigate the controls. Printing & scanning speeds are good and has the added functionality of printing & scanning from & to USB flash drives, printing from emails and scanning to emails all without the use of a computer. It also has a duplexer which means it can print on both sides of a sheet by itself without any interaction from the user. Basically, all the features you would want from a multifunction. Basic setup is easy enough for printing and scanning and fax but if you want to make use of some of the more advanced features like print from email, scan to email, scan to dropbox and scan to network folder it can get a a bit tricky. For that i suggest calling HP support and they will guide you through the detailed setup process and all the configurations needed to make things work. HP support is excellent by the way. The reason I'm giving this item 4 stars is because there was a defect in the unit i got and had missed my return window to best buy; however, HP support was excellent in replacing my unit with a new one. They FedExed me a brand new unit and sent me a prepaid shipping label to send the defective one back. That's why i like HP, they're a very respectable company.

I purchased this printer for my mother who’s very technology challenged. I’d often get a call asking how to print something I emailed her, even though I’ve shown her several times. This printer makes some of those questions disappear. Setup was fairly easy. One gripe is the small LCD screen. It’s 2018, but the small screen makes it seem like it’s 2005! Using the screen, I connect the printer to the WiFi network. I also setup the e-print functionality. This allows me to email a document she needs printed directly to the printer and like magic, it’ll print. No more printing questions! This was my primary reason for choosing HP. I’m not sure if other brands have this feature. I haven’t tried Google cloud print, it might be similar in functionality. Once the printer was setup, I was able to print from the MacBook immediately. What took me a few minutes to figure out was the AirPrint. The new printer wasn’t showing up as an option in my phone or iPad. I tried rebooting printer as well, nothing. Then I toggled off Airplane mode and voila! The printer showed up when I went to print. I find the print quality to be excellent. Overall features include scanner, print and copy functions. Great printer, not too big, does what I need it to do.

Family Use - XL Ink NOT Cost Effect/replace time

We switched from Inkjet to laserjet because of the cost of ink! Overall the printer works well, however, there are some bugs to fix. 1. the scanner always seems to be "disconnected" from the "laptop to printer" & we have to use "scan doctor" all the time to "reconnect" first. And the fault is not my laptop because I am using a new $1500 HP laptop just purchased 2 months ago (ie Aug 2018). Luckily we don't scan very often. 2. Scanning from "Printer to laptop" never works! Must use "laptop to scanner" AFTER using "scan doctor" to reconnect! 3. Scan to "editable pdf" is literally non existent, which is super important for college & research & a must for banking & taxes! 4. The printer works fine, though the printer's "quick access print" options should be more detailed. It is tiresome to find & adjust printer margins, which is huge for research for college. 5. Finally (& the biggest factor) the cost of ink is not as cost effective as initially thought! We even order the XL ink & it goes pretty quickly! So how much do we use? Not much really! Our printer is set to the lowest ink level for "draft quality" setting! Mostly for occasional use, for taxes, occasional college & research printing, bills, receipts & banking. approx 5- 10 color scans at "normal setting"/month. Note: This is NOT "picture quality" just "normal ink quality for color prints"! As a family, to replace 4 ink cartridges at $100 a piece is crushing for a family to fork out!!!! I am concerned what we will do when we run out of ink!!!! Should I buy a backup double sided inkjet printer??? If so what is the purpose of having a color laserjet for family use?

This printer was great for about 2 months. Then out of the blue, it starts sounding like a sick elk every time it feeds a piece of paper though it. Just plain old paper, not bond or photo paper or anything at special. Call up HP support? Got a less than knowledageble person on the line, who didn’t even bother to look up the model number, though I asked him twice. This turkey tells me ink is clogging the print heads and to clean them out, and that any poor performance on the part of the printer was my fault. When I politely told him it was a laser jet he growled at me I didn’t tell him that. Whew! When I asked to speak to a supervisor he told me he didn’t have a supervisor, he was the supervisor, and I was a terrible person for wanting to complain about him. Go figger... Save the hassle, buy Canon or Brother or something other quality brand that BB carries. HP has gone way past it’s prime, and the printers that were the standard bearers, are now just poor, unsupported doorstops.

      Hi Paul,

I'm extremely sorry that this happened to you. This is not the customer experience we aim for.

If the noisy printing seems to be due to a paper jam, you could try to clear it by following these instructions: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05620791

If that does not work, please give our support team another chance. You can contact us via: hp.com/contacthp

I really like the quality of the prints, the auto feeder, the duplex printing, and the scanning abilities. However, I did have a tough setting this up as a wireless printer. Apparently, this printer does not like Sagemcom routers (Spectrum supplied router). I wound up having to reboot my router, and reserve the IP adress for this printer, otherwise, I would have to start the setup process every time the IP changed. That was -1 star for the experience. I never had that trouble with other printers. Another drawback is the cost of the toner, at $75+ for each toner cartridge, I'll spend almost as much on toner as I did on the printer, -1 more star for that mess. Hopefully refills or aftermarket cartridges will be available soon. If so, then I'll come back and give this printer four stars. I'd recommend this printer for a small company that wants a professional looking printout, I wouldn't recommend this to a friend on a tight budget.

Horrible color printing after only a few months

I have purchased a HP Color Laser jet MF PM281fdw and I hate to say that I am totality disappointed in this product. When I first purchased it the colors were ok but now after only a few months they are dull and faded. I am an elementary teacher and I love color copies for classroom decor, parent handouts and newsletters and student work, however, I am almost embarrassed to send these copies home and usually I don't. I have always had a HP printer and copier and was always so pleased. I only use hp ink and have followed instructions to clean it. I would be willing to pay extra to upgrade to a better printer and return this one. I purchased it a t Best Buy in Covington, La. and also purchased the maintenance policy. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sara Laurence Would not recommend. Only after a few months it is making horrible color copies.

I have only had this printer operating for a couple of weeks but it makes good copies both from the copier function and the printer function. I have not yet used the FAX feature. But the scans provide a clear image. It is easy to understand and use...very intuitive so it is easy to use. One thing I have experienced is when I put in a heavier paper stock to use with the printer function the machine made a terrible "grinding" noise as if it was in need of some oil. It almost sounded like metal on metal. But when I changed out the paper to the regular copier paper that stopped(?) The printer is a bit louder than other HPs I have had but not really that bothersome to me. I will be monitoring the "grinding" noise as I use the printer for a longer period of time. From my research this model got a favorable rating from various consumer reviewers so I hope it will hold up well over time. It is very versatile, compact footprint, easy to use and reasonably priced. (Got it on sale during Black Friday event.)

I had grown frustrated with my Epson inkjet printer. It would go through the ink cartridges like they were printer candy, and often the ink was being wasted to cleaning the print heads, as banding and poor color quality would start showing in the print outs. So, I finally decided that I was done with ink jet printers, and I would invest in a laser printer. I am glad that I did. Any laser jet replacement would have to provide both black and white and color print outs, act as a copier as well as a scanner, and have Google Cloud Print capabilities. I got the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw Color printer due to the fact that it checked all of these boxes and its highly rated color quality. All of this came at a very reasonable price. My family has been very pleased with this printer.

In general, the printer is significantly better than the inkjet printer it replaces. Good quality scans and prints, and fast for the price. It is also solidly build. It was really easy to set up to use on our laptop, desktop, as well as iPads. I LIKE IT!!!!! Now, for some annoying issues...... when photocopying or scanning, the DISPLAY screen is about 1/2 inch too close to the start of the scanning point. I keep bumping into it when performing these functions. It’s annoying. Also, I’ve had the printer jam when photocopying on very thin gauge paper. I don’t think many printers would do well in this task either, but the process of unjamming the printer takes some time. Oh well.... In summary, I would recommend this printer but would rate it a 3.5, it’s just because these annoying issues. HP can probably modify the design in the newer models.

It has been a month since I bought this printer. May I advise you that as of 01/2019, this printer was not working well with the HP Smart App. I found out about this after having a customer service representative troubleshooting this printer remotely. Every time I used the HP Smart App, to scan a photo or a document, they came out crooked, skewed to the right. In fact, when I noticed that I thought the problem was the hardware, the printer itself, so I exchanged it out to a new one, but same model. Because the problem persisted, I called the customer service, very good by the way. The representative knew right away that the problem was the app and recommend to uninstall it and keep just the printing and scanning software that came with the printer. So, It prints and scans perfectly if you dont use the HP Smart App.

I was in the market for a new printer and I was going to get a cartridge printer but after talking to the best buy salesman I ended up going with this laser printer because it can print so many more copies without having to replace an ink cartridge because the laser cartridges last longer. The setup was quick and easy and I just followed the instructions.Connects to my WIFI and lets me print from my iphone too! This is a printer and a copier and a scanner and a fax machine and I have used it to print, make copies and scan and it works well. It also has its own email address so I can be not home and anywhere and send a document by email to the printer's email and I can e-print from anywhere to this printer which I thought was really cool. I went with HP because I heard they are the leader!

I was unable to obtain consistent connectivity to my MacBook Pro. Both the USB and wireless formats were equally poor. Printer CONSISTENTLY (and annoyingly irregularly) would lose contact with the MacBook. When connected, one page black and white jobs would sometimes print immediately and at other times not at all. Never able to complete a 10 page color document. Installed/reinstalled drivers repeatedly. HP support was valiant, but could not overcome a fundamentally unstable machine. Am loading into car for immediate return and for purchase of a competitive product. I will never buy another HP printer. This is sad, because I have been a long-term, otherwise very satisfied HP customer. Would rate at "zero" stars were that option available.

Excellent quality and performance and all the features for a home office or small business. Color laser printer, fax, scanner, copier, document feeder, double-sided scanning, automatic double sided printing, USB, LAN network, wireless network, scan to email, scan to USB flash drive, scan to cloud, print remotely directly to printer (from outside your network), touch screen controls. I had an older model HP all-in-one (about 2 generations older). This newer model is better in every way. It's faster, quieter, about 35% smaller in size and print quality is excellent. Great job HP. I personally wouldn't buy a refurbished though, warranty is important on these kinds of devices as they are expensive to ship and repair

What can I say, I really like what HP does with home laser printers, but seriously, they REALLY need to get a marketing person in there to come up with better names than, "LaserJet Pro MFP M180nq CW AIO" I mean, whatever happened to "LaserJet Color Pro II" or similar names that you did not need a note to remember? Anyway, the printer is quick, great quality and very easy to set up. Automatically supports wireless (read: iPad) printing which cured several problems all at once. The printer is plug and play (well, after you install drivers which takes a couple of minutes). HP still totally rips you off on the toner costs, but they also rip you off on ink costs and the lasers are far, far cheaper than ink overall... I have purchased two of these for my company and have no problem recommending them.

We were having trouble keeping our Brother printer connected to our iMac's and MacBook Pro. One minute it worked the next it would not, after much searching, driver updates, and reinstalling software I had enough and decided to give HP a try. The sales associate said that the HP products work better with Apple than most other printers. I was skeptical, but decided to give it a try. So far so good! The installation was extremely easy, I mean it was effortless with a wifi network. We have had no connectivity issues, and the print quality is second to none. We have only had the printer for a short while but I would recommend this product from what I have seen so far!

Excited to upgrade to the printer and what a disappointment. WE thought we just had a wifi problem at first. This printer would say it was connected, but just would only print after retrying and restarting - sometimes several times. Caused all sorts of stress if you needed to print in a hurry. Then, we fixed our wifi hoping that was the problem. But it wasn't. Turns out this printer just sucks. Since we missed our 30 return window Best Buy wasn't willing to take it back or trade it out. Pretty shameful. 15 or 30 days is too short a time to know that we got a lemon.

Bought the printer. Would only print one page and then I would get an imaginary paper jam alert. Open the tray, check it out, no jam close the tray, it would again print one page and then give another paper jam alert. This cycle continued. Called tech support. They said we won't even bother, go exchange it So I did. Same model. Take it home, set it up again. This time it won't print. I call tech support again. They tell me this time it came with a defective USB cable. Are you serious?? This one is goin back too. Never again I will buy another HP product and I will inform everyone I can to avoid their products like the plague
