My Honest Review: HP OMEN 16” 2K 144Hz Gaming Laptop
I’ve been using the HP OMEN 16 for a while now, and overall, it’s been a **really solid gaming laptop** — but not without its flaws. Here’s my honest take after putting it through everyday use and plenty of gaming sessions.
---
### 👍 What I Like
**1. The screen is beautiful and smooth.**
The 16-inch display looks super sharp and clear since it’s 2K resolution. Games and videos look crisp, and the 144Hz refresh rate makes everything feel extra smooth — no lag or motion blur when you’re playing fast-paced games like Call of Duty or Apex. Once you get used to this kind of display, going back to a regular screen feels slow.
**2. It’s powerful and fast.**
This thing flies. It runs all my games easily — everything from heavy AAA titles to lighter stuff — and multitasking is a breeze. I’ve had YouTube, Discord, and a game running at the same time with no slowdowns. The Ryzen 9 and RTX graphics combo really handle anything I throw at it.
**3. The build feels premium.**
It’s not flimsy or cheap feeling. The laptop feels sturdy and well made. The keyboard has a nice feel too — good key travel, comfortable to type or game on, and the RGB backlighting adds a nice touch if you’re into that.
**4. It stays cooler than I expected (for a gaming laptop).**
It still gets warm, but HP did a decent job with cooling. The vents are big, and it doesn’t cook your hands while you’re playing. Fans definitely spin up under load, but that’s expected with gaming laptops.

### 👎 What I Don’t Like
**1. The battery life is bad.**
If you’re planning to use it unplugged, don’t. Gaming on battery power drains it super fast — you’ll be lucky to get an hour or two before it dies. Even just browsing or watching videos gives you around 3–4 hours max. It’s really meant to stay plugged in most of the time.
**2. The fans get loud.**
When you start gaming or doing heavy tasks, the fans can get pretty noisy. It’s not unbearable, but definitely noticeable — especially if you’re not wearing headphones. It’s one of those laptops that reminds everyone in the room that you’re gaming.
**3. The screen wobbles a bit.**
The hinges aren’t the strongest. If you tap or adjust the screen, it moves a little. Not a huge deal, but for something at this price point, I expected a sturdier display mount.
**4. There’s some pre-installed software you probably don’t need.**
It comes with a few extra programs you’ll likely never use (like trial antivirus and other HP apps). Not a dealbreaker, but you’ll probably spend your first 10 minutes uninstalling stuff.

### ⚖️ My Overall Thoughts
If you’re buying this laptop mainly for gaming or power-hungry work like editing, **it’s a beast**. It performs great, looks clean, and gives you that buttery-smooth 144Hz experience that makes gaming feel amazing.
But if you’re hoping for something lightweight, quiet, and long-lasting on battery, this isn’t it. It’s a powerhouse — and with that power comes noise, heat, and the need to stay plugged in.
For me, the trade-off is worth it. I wanted strong performance and a beautiful display, and the HP OMEN 16 definitely delivers on that. As long as you know what to expect, it’s a great gaming laptop that’ll last you for years.

I bought this for my husband. We have had it for about 2 weeks now and already having issues with the display and it freezing completely during a game.

Ordered this laptop thinking it was pretty decent value but after looking a little further into the specs I realized how bad the screen was in this with a 68 percent srgb screen that’s a complete deal breaker for most it has all that good hardware and can’t even really show it off unless your connected to an external monitor not worth the price look at an acre predator Helios or an asus tuff gaming instead ended up not even opening this laptop and retuning it for a gaming pc that I am very happy with

First, this laptop is a beast, it's not light and is pretty solid with a large display. I think for gaming this thing is and definitely delivers in terms of performance for FPS games and other AAA titles. There are a few minor things that I didn't like.
What great:
The display size and bezel/finish on the display
The keyboard feel/layout
Speed/performance - the Ultra 7 and 5060 is amazing!
Expandability
Ethernet and HDMI ports
Single power brick
Ports on back in center
What's not so great:
The touchpad (you can only click on the bottom 2/3rds of the pad)
The display (bleeds light around the edges in dark scenes)
Audio/sound (it's loud but lacks bass for being such a big laptop when compared to other gaming laptops)
Lacks additional USB-C ports and faster ports (only has one and it's only 10Gbps)
Where this laptop shines is in overall performance. It does run cool and quiet but packs a punch in terms of running any game you can throw at it. I ran Valorant and was able to see great framerates above around with tweaked settings at 144hz. It's definitely possible to tweak and get great performance out of this machine for those games where it matters. And where FPS isn't as critical you can play games on this machine with all settings on max without any issue.
I'd recommend this laptop overall for performance, you'll definitely get a lot of bang for your buck out of this machine. The only thing you might want to look out for are the things noted under what's not so great.

Bought for my 11 year old son for Christmas. The graphics card failed the day after Christmas, screen start flickering and was hard to see. Also the battery died on the first day. We had to return the laptop. When we repurchased, we went with a different brand based on expert opinion. I would not buy another HP Omen.
