Good Omen, with a Few Trade-Offs!!!

I have been testing out the HP OMEN 16 for a few days now, and overall, I’m happy with it. The new HP Omen has a lot to offer but could use some improvements in other areas. So, let’s go over what the HP Omen has to offer.
Setup and Unboxing:
H: 0.94 Inches, W: 14.07 Inches, D: 10.59 Inches and Weight: 5.36 pounds.
Right out of the box, the laptop has a nice hefty feel coming in at about 5.5 pounds, a little heavy but that is to be expected of a 16 Inch gaming laptop. It features a modern look, without being too flashy. On the inside, the laptop features a full keyboard with customizable lighting and decent sized and very responsive touchpad. The laptop also offers a front-facing 1080p camera with a built-in microphone. The laptop comes with a 230W charging brick, which is about the size of an actual brick, just thinner.
Regarding setup, there is nothing special about it, just your normal windows setup which feels like it takes forever with any laptop.
Display:
The HP Omen is equipped with a 2K IPS LED display, offering a native resolution of 1920 x 1200. This screen provides sharp visuals and vibrant colors, making it suitable for gaming and creative work alike. With a 144Hz refresh rate, I experienced smooth motion, which is especially beneficial for fast-paced gaming. The display also incorporates anti-glare coating, which helps reduce reflections in bright environments. One thing I noticed is that the brightness output on this laptop is kind of low coming in at about 300 nits, which does make the display output seem a little dim, but not terrible. Powering the display is the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 with 8 GB DDR7 ram. Yes, that is the base model, but that is to be expected from a mid-range laptop. The 5060 helps provide great visuals for 1080p gaming but can be limited in more demanding games at higher resolution. Overall, the laptop does the job of providing entertainment that looks and feels good, whether it is watching a movie or playing your favorite games.
Under the hood:
The new Omen is powered by Intel Core Ultra 7 with AI Boost, paired up with 16 GB of DDR5 SDRAM. The laptop feels snappy, and it seems smarter about power usage when I’m not gaming. I can have multiple apps open at once and it doesn’t flinch. The processor features 16 core Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor with a boost up to 5.1Ghz. The 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD combination keeps everything running quickly, and I haven’t run into any lag or long load times yet. One great thing about this laptop is that it is easily upgradable. The motherboard has an open slot for an extra SSD and upgradable RAM, so if you’re not happy with the speeds and storage, just upgrade. On a side note, this laptop does run a little hot at extended use, but that can be controlled by manually controlling the fans from the Omen application. Setting the fans to the Max setting does cool it down, but it does get a little noisy, If not using headphones.
Battery:
This is where this laptop does not shine at all. Let me just say this, if you are going to be gaming on this laptop, which is its intended purpose, make sure you have your charger with you. Battery life is fine for light work, but gaming on battery drains it fast. I usually keep it plugged in when I play. It stated that this laptop should provide up to 7 hours but realistically you are looking at about 5 hours.
Ports:
This is where this laptop just takes the cake. This laptop offers port galore for your entertainment. You have the following options at your disposal.
1 – HDMI 2.1
1 – USB C 3.2
1 – USB A 3.2
2 – USB A 3.1
Audio Jack
Ethernet Port / WIFI 6e
The only port that is missing is a display port, which again is not a big deal.
Conclusion:
All in all, this laptop provides strong value with solid performance for gaming and creative tasks. It's reliable, enjoyable, and a good choice for those seeking balanced performance without a high price.

After unboxing, first impression is of excellent construction, and quite heavy. The case appears to be all plastic. However, some online info states the chassis is sheet metal covered with plastic, and seems solid. I did notice the lid hinges are quite stiff, however there was some “wobble” or flex, without actually moving the screen. The bottom cooling intake vents have a mesh over them, which should keep the inside fairly clean.
Around the sides and back there were numerous ports, including one USB-C, one USB-A 3.2, two USB-A 3.1, an HDMI port, LAN port, headphone jack, and power. Sadly lacking, there is neither an SD, or micro SD card slot.
Some of the specs are impressive. One TB SSD, 16Gb DDR5 ram, a 16 core Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor with a boost up to 5.1 Ghz. A screen with 1920 X 1200 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. An Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 with 8Gb - should slice through top tier games easily.
There are a few things that underwhelm..... Mainly the screen - with a rated brightness of only 300 nits, a color gamut of only 62.5, and no touch. I did manage to get a good color balance using advanced color settings in control panel, but still didn't have the best dynamic range. However, once colors settings were tweaked, the screen looked good for movies, videos etc. When gaming, the 1920 x 1200 resolution, the 144Hz refresh rate made for sharp, smooth game experience, with good color.
Sound through the speakers was good for a laptop, using headphones is always a good option.
Do not expect phenomenal battery life. I did setup, installation of apps, downloaded and installed updates etc., and at 3 ½ hours, battery had dropped to 38%. I would expect 4 ½ to 5 hours with every day tasks, and maybe as little as 2 hours if gaming and working the video card.
I found the keyboard to have good feel and travel, but some of the key markings are tiny, and a few look similar – the D, O, and 0, while the period and comma are almost invisible. The touch pad is large and responds well, but is shifted to the left due to the addition of the number pad. Key back lighting can be customized and is RGB.
Doing usual browsing, emails, downloading, updating, etc., this machine didn't slow down a bit even while multi-tasking.
On to trying a game. I used an older game “God Of War” from Steam library, and the performance was excellent. The game ran at 85 to 140 Fps, was extremely smooth and fluid at high settings. Again, sound was adequate, nothing spectacular. Using wired or 2.4Ghz wireless headphones will bring it alive..... While gaming, the fans kicked into high gear, and did have a noticeable sound level.
Overall, this is a good gaming / “everyday” large screen laptop, and should meet the needs of all but the most demanding gamers. I recommend at this price point for a solid performer.

This OMEN laptop is my first experience with an HP designed for playing hard, not just working hard. I have used HP products for years and I have found them to very reliable. HP laptops are standard issue at my job and I have turned them in still working after years and years of constant use.
After using the OMEN for a little over a week, I like the overall design and performance. It a good mid-range choice, but the display and touchpad aren't perfect. The Core i7 Ultra and NVIDIA GeForce RTX5060 are a good combination, allowing most games to be played on higher quality settings with ray tracing (RTX), while still maintaining frame rates over 100fps. With a few tweaks, I was able to find a good balance between quality and frame rates near the maximum display refresh rate of 144hz.
Some games I have tried (this is using performance mode on the highest resolutiuon setting): Metro Exodus Enhanced (100 to 140fps - RTX normal, DLSS balanced, high quality), Mech Warrior 5 (70fps - RTX ON, high quality; w/RTX off, 144fps-vsync, ultra quality), Fortnite (100fps, RTX ON, high quality), FNAF Security Breach (144fps-vsync, high quality, 1080p-game max, no RTX option).
Pros
- Minimal cooling fan noise and good temperature management, even under load in "performance mode".
- Easy to upgrade. There is a Spare SSD and RAM slot on the board, that are accessible by removing a few screws on the bottom - most of which are captured so you can't lose them. HP even includes a heatsink for the empty SSD slot.
- Case and hinge are solid
- Good selection of ports (3 USB-A, 1 USB-C, HDMI, Network) and a headphone jack. The HDMI port worked fine with my 4K monitor.
- Keyboard has decent key travel, a number pad, and a configurable keyboard backlight that lets you assign colors by region and highlight the WASD keys. There are the normal shortcuts (e.g. volume, keyboard backlight, pause/play/skip, display brightness) and a few extra for disabling the trackpad, disabling the windows key, and toggling between performance modes.
- The included OMEN software allows some customization, can predict FPS using your current settings for some games, and helps game performance by automatically freeing up resources when a game is launched.
- The built-in camera is better than average and has a privacy shutter. 2.1MP photos and 1080p video quality is good with less noise than I expected (even in indoor light). On video calls, people noting the image was very clear.
Things to Consider
- The screen has a good refresh rate (144hz) and resolution (1920x1200), that offer good performance in fast paced games, but I am not sold on the matte texture. Brightness is adequate and glare is not an issue, but colors look less vibrant than I was expecting.
- The large multi-finger touchpad allows you to scroll, pinch to zoom, and even configure additional three finger actions, but I don't like the amount of travel/feel required for clicking - it is usable, but doesn't have the same quality feel as the rest of the laptop.
- Speakers are clear with good volume and no distortion, but there is not much low end and perform best on center.
- Battery life is decent, but bring your charger. The battery last about 3.5hrs under moderate use (you could probably stretch it to 5hrs if you use the "eco" performance mode and enable Windows battery saver) and takes around 2hrs to charge. Since my gaming laptops spend most of their time on AC power, I appreciate that the My HP app has a battery health setting that limits charging to 80%.

Entry Level Gamer with Ai capabilities
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Bottom Line: This HP laptop is an acceptable entry level gaming machine. It will play most if not all games as well as support the typical home and business applications that most people use. The biggest short comings are in the quality of the display and the configuration of the RAM. The display while adequate just lacked the visual pop that you expect from a gaming machine. The RAM while plenty fast is a single stick so no dual channel support. Overall this laptop is nicely built and a decent value.
Pros:
- Open NVMe slot so you can add additional storage
- 1 tb of NVMe gen 4x4 storage
- The laptop is fairly cool and quiet even in Performance mode gaming
- Decent specs for an entry level gaming laptop
- There are two RAM slots so the memory can be upgraded
- Ai ready and capable
Cons:
- Display lacks vivid color and brightness
- The 16gb of Ram is in a single stick so it’s not dual channel
- It’s big, thick and heavy, not meant to be carried around
Tech Specs: The display is an IPS panel with a 1920 x 1200 resolution and a 144 hz refresh rate. Both of these are good for gaming but I was underwhelmed by the brightness levels and color gamut. The images just weren’t as vivid as I would have expected. The Intel Ultra 7 provides good results, see the Geekbench scores below, without generating a ton of heat. I was surprised by how well this laptop vents the heat without having to run the fans on high the entire time. This laptop has a NPU and is Ai capable for those that are looking to delve into Ai apps like Co-Pilot. The memory is a single 16 gb stick of DDR5 5600mhz RAM which is really fast however as a single stick it does not support dual channel. I did check and there is an empty Ram slot so you can upgrade this RAM to two sticks of memory but that adds additional cost. The storage is a single NVMe M2 2280 that is a PCIe gen 4x4 card. If that isn’t enough storage there is a second M2 2280 slot available and I installed a Samsung EVO Plus to verify that it is useable. The graphics card is the Nvidia 5060 which provides good game support at HD levels of resolution as shown below. The keyboard and overall build are good and have a quality feel to them. The power on key is in an odd spot but that’s not a deal breaker.
Omen Software: The laptop comes with the Omen Gaming Hub which gives you the option to set the laptop Performance levels along with the RGB keyboard lighting and gaming profiles. It also shows the system status such as fan speeds and temperatures. The software also has Ai capabilities to adjust the system’s performance parameters based upon the game selected.
After fully charging the battery and updating the software and firmware I ran this laptop through several benchmarks and then several games to see how it would perform and how much heat it would generate. The benchmarks are below and although the laptop did get warm after some intense use it never got worrisome hot nor did the fans run so loud that they became an annoyance.

5 stars – A Mid-Range Monster That Punches Above Its Weight
I’ve been gaming on the HP OMEN 16 and it makes me forget I'm not on my desktop.
Performance (5/5)
The Intel Core Ultra 7 + RTX 5060 combo is really good. I’m hitting 140+ FPS in red dead at 1440p on High settings with DLSS Quality and ray tracing on. The AI Boost actually works, I rarely drop below 100 FPS even in open-world gaming. Thermals stay under cool under sustained load; the fans are loud but not jet-engine bad.
Display (5/5)
2K 144Hz IPS is crisp and fast. Colors pop and the 3ms response time helps in shooters. One nitpick, the brightness tops out around 420 nits—fine indoors, but seems washed out in sunlight.
Build & Keyboard (4/5)
The light up keyboard looks nice in dark settings and has that satisfying click, but the number pad is cramped. Trackpad is huge and accurate, though dragging and clicking is difficult without buttons.
Battery (3/5)
6–7 hours of light work (browsing, docs) on Balanced mode. Gaming unplugged? 60–75 minutes max. Expected, but still not many places you need to take it without power.
Storage & RAM (4/5)
1TB storage is useful but any storage nowadays should be that high, ram is snappy and helps get things moving quick
Value (5/5)
Around that $1500 mark is great, perfect for 2k gaming without breaking $2K. Definitely recommend for mid range computers that are expensive but don't break that super high price point.

My son was super-excited to get this laptop to upgrade his one from 5+ years ago. 1TB SSD is plenty of space, but we still brought over his expansion SSD from the old laptop to the new one since it has a second slot. Graphics card is really nice, and everything runs much smoother now.

Ordered this laptop thinking it was pretty decent value but after looking a little further into the specs I realized how bad the screen was in this with a 68 percent srgb screen that’s a complete deal breaker for most it has all that good hardware and can’t even really show it off unless your connected to an external monitor not worth the price look at an acre predator Helios or an asus tuff gaming instead ended up not even opening this laptop and retuning it for a gaming pc that I am very happy with

My Honest Review HP OMEN 16 2K 144Hz Gaming Laptop

My Honest Review: HP OMEN 16” 2K 144Hz Gaming Laptop
I’ve been using the HP OMEN 16 for a while now, and overall, it’s been a **really solid gaming laptop** — but not without its flaws. Here’s my honest take after putting it through everyday use and plenty of gaming sessions.
---
### 👍 What I Like
**1. The screen is beautiful and smooth.**
The 16-inch display looks super sharp and clear since it’s 2K resolution. Games and videos look crisp, and the 144Hz refresh rate makes everything feel extra smooth — no lag or motion blur when you’re playing fast-paced games like Call of Duty or Apex. Once you get used to this kind of display, going back to a regular screen feels slow.
**2. It’s powerful and fast.**
This thing flies. It runs all my games easily — everything from heavy AAA titles to lighter stuff — and multitasking is a breeze. I’ve had YouTube, Discord, and a game running at the same time with no slowdowns. The Ryzen 9 and RTX graphics combo really handle anything I throw at it.
**3. The build feels premium.**
It’s not flimsy or cheap feeling. The laptop feels sturdy and well made. The keyboard has a nice feel too — good key travel, comfortable to type or game on, and the RGB backlighting adds a nice touch if you’re into that.
**4. It stays cooler than I expected (for a gaming laptop).**
It still gets warm, but HP did a decent job with cooling. The vents are big, and it doesn’t cook your hands while you’re playing. Fans definitely spin up under load, but that’s expected with gaming laptops.
---
### 👎 What I Don’t Like
**1. The battery life is bad.**
If you’re planning to use it unplugged, don’t. Gaming on battery power drains it super fast — you’ll be lucky to get an hour or two before it dies. Even just browsing or watching videos gives you around 3–4 hours max. It’s really meant to stay plugged in most of the time.
**2. The fans get loud.**
When you start gaming or doing heavy tasks, the fans can get pretty noisy. It’s not unbearable, but definitely noticeable — especially if you’re not wearing headphones. It’s one of those laptops that reminds everyone in the room that you’re gaming.
**3. The screen wobbles a bit.**
The hinges aren’t the strongest. If you tap or adjust the screen, it moves a little. Not a huge deal, but for something at this price point, I expected a sturdier display mount.
**4. There’s some pre-installed software you probably don’t need.**
It comes with a few extra programs you’ll likely never use (like trial antivirus and other HP apps). Not a dealbreaker, but you’ll probably spend your first 10 minutes uninstalling stuff.
---
### ⚖️ My Overall Thoughts
If you’re buying this laptop mainly for gaming or power-hungry work like editing, **it’s a beast**. It performs great, looks clean, and gives you that buttery-smooth 144Hz experience that makes gaming feel amazing.
But if you’re hoping for something lightweight, quiet, and long-lasting on battery, this isn’t it. It’s a powerhouse — and with that power comes noise, heat, and the need to stay plugged in.
For me, the trade-off is worth it. I wanted strong performance and a beautiful display, and the HP OMEN 16 definitely delivers on that. As long as you know what to expect, it’s a great gaming laptop that’ll last you for years.

Solid sleek laptop

Unboxing was sleek and easy, reminding me of apple products. Setup was simple and straight forward. The laptop had some updates to do, which was fairly quick, and then we were all set and ready to go, in under an hour.
My daughter (who is the gamer in the family) loves the colorful backlit keyboard, and even more that it is customizable. And the fact that there is a number keypad as some laptops don't have one at all. The touchpad is quite large compared to other gaming/laptops, and very responsive so far. I prefer to use a mouse but when I'm on the couch that really isn't an option. The keys are well lit, though some of the punctuation marks are hard to see.
The battery lasted about 6 hours with normal use. But only about 4 hours when used for gaming (and that was playing roblox). I would say keep it plugged in if you want to game all day. I was just watching videos on the internet and the fan came on and was quite loud. I was a little confused why the video was causing the laptop to overheat but I am not a computer gal, other than using them daily, so what do I know?
My daughter said it's better than the one I got her last year (also a gaming laptop, with a sticker price of 999 but got on sale for 699). The screen is nice but nothing life changing. I would say if you're a gamer, look at the specs and the price and you'll know if it's right for you. To me it's a nice laptop that works for everyday tasks, watching videos and gaming.

Decent gaming laptop overall

First, this laptop is a beast, it's not light and is pretty solid with a large display. I think for gaming this thing is and definitely delivers in terms of performance for FPS games and other AAA titles. There are a few minor things that I didn't like.
What great:
The display size and bezel/finish on the display
The keyboard feel/layout
Speed/performance - the Ultra 7 and 5060 is amazing!
Expandability
Ethernet and HDMI ports
Single power brick
Ports on back in center
What's not so great:
The touchpad (you can only click on the bottom 2/3rds of the pad)
The display (bleeds light around the edges in dark scenes)
Audio/sound (it's loud but lacks bass for being such a big laptop when compared to other gaming laptops)
Lacks additional USB-C ports and faster ports (only has one and it's only 10Gbps)
Where this laptop shines is in overall performance. It does run cool and quiet but packs a punch in terms of running any game you can throw at it. I ran Valorant and was able to see great framerates above around with tweaked settings at 144hz. It's definitely possible to tweak and get great performance out of this machine for those games where it matters. And where FPS isn't as critical you can play games on this machine with all settings on max without any issue.
I'd recommend this laptop overall for performance, you'll definitely get a lot of bang for your buck out of this machine. The only thing you might want to look out for are the things noted under what's not so great.

I’ve been able to spend so time with the HP Omen. The first thing is straight out of the box this thing is hefty! It is weighty at over 5 lbs. Its thickness is moderate and has decent looks. That being said it takes advantage of the weight and size with performance. Packing an Intel Ultra 7 and a 5060 it needs to be beefy for that hardware. It also has really good I/O with 3 Type As and 1 USB C and a full HDMI port. This thing is packed with ports! I am a person that is always looks for ports and this thing delivers especially when I’m streaming or doing some music production. The looks don’t stop there it has a 144hz 2K screen that makes gaming sharp and buttery. And the keyboard feels great and tactile. Not only is it backlit it also has RGB! This is an awesome touch from HP to add that true gaming feel. Unfortunately, my only gripe is that we can’t have high wattage from a USB C so you have to have the giant Brick with barrel adapter. Only draw back from gaming laptops. Low battery life and giant bricks. But so is life. This laptop is great for competitive shooters and some intense games. You wont be playing Cyberpunk at 4k 144hz but you will be able to get some decent frames in COD and Fortnite at about 120 frames. So you will be able to use that refresh rate. This is definitely a great all around laptop that can chew through workstation tasks and game at night. Just make sure you have a plug nearby.

I was excited to test out the HP OMEN - 16" 2K 144Hz Gaming Laptop with the new Intel Core Ultra 7 255H and put it through its paces.
HP OMEN is its line of laptops that are priced for gamers at the entry level of its components. That being said there is a lot to like in this mobile package offering from HP.
Pros:
Ultra 7 255H - CPU
16 GB DDR5 SDRAM
1TB SSD
5060 RTX GPU
Cons
Battery Life
Testing:
The laptop is a beefy laptop, comes in at almost 6 lbs and with a power brick that just as large and hefty. This is a 16 inch laptop with a 1920x1200 144hz screen its a 2k IPS LED so you get a nice vibrant smooth picture. This pairs well with the GPU sweet spot because with it having only 8GB of DDDR7 Ram, your not going to play max ultra at 4k resolutions. Additionally, this come s with your standard plugs, HDMI 2.1, a USB C 3.2, 2 USB type As Wifi 6e and an Audio Jack. It does not have your typical DP port but USB C suffices in its place.
OK testing: I played WoW, COD, and BF6 on this albeit at lower specs and managed over 60 plus on everything when it auto selected presets. very Smooth experience, Playing on battery was totally different story. It sounded like a rocket warming up, and lasted me I would say 4 hours max. Other days i was seeing 5-6 hours when I wasn't pushing it hard. Also adjust the fan curve to keep it cool when gaming as the heat is noticeable but doesn't impact.
Final Thoughts: great Laptop for gamers who want something on the go, has enough performance with a great screen and some power to do all your homework or daily computing tasks.
