SETUP AND PRODUCT CONFIGURATION:
This HP Omen 16 comes with:
Ryzen 5800h (45 watts, 8 cores 16 threads)
Radeon 6600m (100 watts, 1792 cores 8gb vram)
16 gbs dual channel ram 3200MHz
1 tb nvme ssd
144hz 1080p display
My Omen 16 didn’t come with much in the box. Just the computer, charging brick, and a setup pamflet. Getting things setup after turning the computer on was pretty easy. HP does put a few bloatware programs onto the computer (Mcafee, ExplressVPN, and LastPass), but nothing ridiculous. I ended up deleting those programs and just using Windows Defender for security. After changing around some settings to my personal liking, I updated Windows and all of the out of date drivers. HP’s support assistant software works well for all the updates.
BUILD QUALITY AND IO:
The build quality of the Omen 16 was excellent. HP really did a good job. The display casing is plastic, but the rest of the computer is aluminum and all feels great to the touch. Despite the plastic, the display is sturdy with little screen flex or wobble. It could be on the brighter side though. I probably would shy away from using it outside or in direct sunlight. I haven’t noticed any significant backlight bleeding either. I’ve seen people complain about color accuracy, but I was never bothered by the colors and it works just fine for gaming and content consumption. I also appreciate the 144hz refresh rate. It makes gaming and everyday tasks feel quick and snappy.
This laptop is extremely nice to type on. The keyboard is one of the best I’ve used in a laptop. It also has a 4 zone rgb backlight that is decently bright. The included Omen Light Studio software you use to customize the keyboard lights is a little finicky to use and could be better. There’s also no numpad on this computer which wasn’t a big deal. The touchpad is very large and pleasant to use. The left and right clicks as well as the gestures all feel fine.
There’s plenty of IO in this machine as well. 3 usb ports, 1 usb c, ethernet, hdmi, display port, and a full size sd card reader. Enough for what most people would need. Only downside is there’s no thunderbolt because it's not an Intel machine.
The webcam is fine, gets the job done, but it's not great quality. The microphone on the other hand is great. It's a very decent built in option that doesn’t pick up a whole lot of fan noise when gaming. The speakers (by Bang & Olufsen) have a big brand name on them, but they sounded like pretty typical laptop speakers to me.
I had no issues with quality control and I haven't heard of anyone else having many issues either. This computer seems very durable. It is worth noting that HP does provide a good guide for any upgrades or replacements you might need to do on their youtube channel.
GAMING PERFORMANCE AND COOLING:
I was pleasantly surprised by how good AMD’s Radeon 6600m was with games. I was a little hesitant about going AMD for graphics instead of the tried and true Nvidia one’s I’ve used for years but I’ve found that it more than meets my expectations.
Here are some games I tested on high and ultra settings:
CSGO ------------------- 200ish average fps
Hunt Showdown ---- 90-100 average fps
Horizon Zero Dawn - 70-80 average fps
Rocket League ------- 300 average fps
PUBG -------------------- 120 average fps
The Radeon 6600m should be able to play new games at high and medium settings for several years to come. The only downsides to it not being Nvidia is that you don’t get DLSS in supported titles and the ray tracing performance really isn’t good. But otherwise I think it compares very well with an RTX 3060.
The fans for the most part keep this laptop cool and quiet. Fan noise wasn't a huge issue, but if you are playing a really demanding game with max fans on it does get loud (headphones recommended at that point). The temps while I was playing the more demanding games were 86-93 degrees celsius for the CPU and about 77-81 for the GPU. In the easier to run games the CPU was instead at about 77-87 and the GPU 67-77. Overall I didn’t see cooling as an issue while using this laptop.
The charging brick does get very hot when doing intensive gaming.
DAILY USE AND BATTERY:
This laptop is really fine for everything from hardcore gaming to school and work use. It's light enough to be picked up and moved easily with one hand. The profile is also quite slim for the power that it packs inside. Even though it's a 16in model it fits easily into my 15.6in laptop case.
I found the battery to last from 4.5 to 6 hours on a full charge while doing light productivity work or streaming video, which is enough for me, but it doesn’t last as long as similarly configured laptops.
This computer is really a joy to use. The combo of the fast processor and ssd as well and the 16 gigs of ram instead of 8 really makes this thing a productivity machine. You can have tons of programs open at the same time all doing things at once. The included Omen Gaming Hub and Omen Light Studio programs are not the best I've seen for controlling the backlighting and tweaking the performance but it works.
CONCLUSION:
If you’re looking for a good mid range laptop, this is just about the best option on the market. It's cheaper than most of the other similarly speced laptops available and still manages to crush games and feel like a premium product. Don’t be scared away by AMD graphics or the less than 100% srgb display. You get performance just as good as Nvidia while paying less and the display looks good enough for gaming and everyday use. Maybe not photo and video editing though. You also get 1 tb ssd compared to 500 gbs if you go with the AMD version of the Omen 16 over the Intel and Nvidia one while paying less.

A good omen from HP

The bigger, better and badder Omen is HP’s latest “affordable” gaming laptop. It terms of raw performance, you will be hard pressed to find more bang for the buck. While it hits most of the marks in this price segment, there are few areas for improvement. In review:
Build, cooling keyboard –
The HP Omen 16 is built well with refined plastic and good fit and finish. Not a lot of flex in the keyboard nor screen. The keyboard has no numeric keypad and the arrangement a bit odd for my liking. I was able to get used to it but your mileage may vary.
The cooling/fan system is impressive. It has large intakes on the bottom that are raised up from the body. While it can get loud, it was well within what I expected and does not have the typical whine you found on some laptop fans. It was just a more of an air sound than anything else. You can definitely see that HP put a lot of thought not the cooling and it does work well. I experienced not thermal issues or noticeable thermal throttling.
Sound –
Rich, moderately powerful and, most importantly, crystal clear. Bass and sounds popped during games. Music was noticeably on point. I could have liked a bit more power but I will take clear over power any day.
Display:
The display was a bit of disappointment. It really should be brighter and falls behind the competition. While it is competent is gaming performance, the screen could use an upgrade. While I usually would say don’t fall for a 4K hype on some other gaming laptops ( 4K is meaningless on a laptop,) I do see brighter screens on the those laptops ( they are more expensive.)
Pros –
1080 P
144hz – absolutely no tearing and stuttering.
Responsive, great input lag times.
Good color reproduction.
Cons -
Not as bright as I would like. When compared to a LG Gram, it is a noticeable difference.
Thick.
Giant screen bezel on bottom. A dated looking screen.
Blacks are a bit grey sometimes.
Power –
I think you need to set the proper expectations for a gaming laptop when it comes to the battery. With heavy game use, the battery life was not good. A few hours at best (I am not going to give an exact number because there are so many variables.) It came with 4 cell 70 watt battery but it looks like there are versions that have a 83 watt. The charger/ power brick is just that - it is a brick. Huge, actually. But that is for the high-power demands and fast charge times this laptop needs. One note is I tested this unit in standby mode. At about 70% power, I put the system in sleep and left it for 3 days. When I attempted to boot up, it was completely dead with the battery 100% discharged. I have seen this before in some laptops and there are multiple reasons this occurs. While I cannot account for the reason in this laptop, it has not impact on performance and charged from 0% to 86% in an hour while I used the laptop. This is annoyance, treat it as such.
Software –
It has the usual set of HP software suite, a bit “bloatish” side for my liking. Two apps I did like were the AMD Radeon software and Omen gaming hub. You get a ton of controls for performance, metrics and more. However, the HP Omen command center part of the Omen Gaming Hub kept crashing and it became unusable. I am sure an update will resolve but it was disappointing.
Performance –
Immensely powerful. Today’s systems have gotten so powerful that it can handle any game you throw at it. I ran multiple games and there were no issues. In testing, they were all hitting 100 FPS with no issues. When I ran some initial tests, it was good but not at the top of what I expected. However, with some tuning to performance over balanced in the Omen Gaming Hub, there was a substantive difference. Don’t fall for the marketing hype from gaming laptop manufacturers, there is little difference between this laptop’s CPU and GPU when it comes to noticeable gaming performance.
So the all-important question is would I recommend it? Yes. While it does have its flaws ( screen brightness and battery life,) it has one big plus – the value. There are not many competitors that can hit all the marks this laptop does – large, fast 1 TB SSD, 1080 P, lots of connectivity options, good speakers and great GPU. The list price is what I would expect so a sale price should make this a great deal. I would have given it 4 stars except the HP software crashing issue and the screen brightness.

I just received my HP Omen gaming laptop model 16-C0002DX. The laptop is well built and solid at just over 5 pounds. It comes standard with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, 16GB SODIMM DDR4 SDRAM, 16.1” FHD IPS LED display, Radeon RX 6600M 8Gb graphics, 1TB Solid State Drive, Windows 10 and Bang & Olufsen audio.
While the laptop does not have an optical drive of any kind, it does have an integrated SD slot, 10/100/1000GB Ethernet, WIFI, Bluetooth 5.2, and 4 USB ports. One is a SuperSpeed USB Type-C 10Gbps signaling rate port (DisplayPort 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge). One is a SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate port (HP Sleep and Charge) and there are 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate ports. There is an HDMI connector as well as a microphone/headphone port.
The keys are very smooth, and flat on the top. From a non-gaming standpoint, this isn’t a big deal. For a gamer, the keys are almost too smooth. A little texture and curvature would really help. When you are playing a game there is a big possibility that your fingers will slide and cause a miss click. One of the pre-installed programs allows you to change the lighting on the keyboard to your liking. This is a nice feature. The trackpad is very responsive but it can be a little difficult at times to tell if you are hitting left or right-click if close to the center of the pad. Everyday usage of the trackpad is fine but for gaming, it will really take some getting used to.
The overall performance of the laptop is very good. I tested it on several different games that had different system requirements. I was able to run games on max settings with no frame drops. One downside is that the display isn't able to utilize the max frame rate because it is limited to 60Hz and 144Hz refresh rates. It is also limited to 1080P resolution, so no 4K gaming. When playing games that have high CPU or GPU usage, the fans can get pretty loud and it gets warm if not on a completely flat and solid surface. Be certain that it gets the proper airflow. The audio is very nice, but might not be as powerful as one might like for a gaming computer. Battery life is good. It is rated at about 9 hours, but don’t expect that kind of life under heavy gaming loads or with the higher screen refresh rate.
Overall the laptop has a lot of power for its size and weight but could make you want to use an external keyboard and mouse, defeating the reason for buying a gaming laptop. I really like the laptop, but there could be improvements made to make it a little more gamer-friendly.

Great Gaming Laptop with excellent air cooling

This laptop has the best, most responsive air cooling of any gaming laptop I've used ever. It cools very well, and boost the fan speeds at default settings very early to get in front of the heat.
Microsoft Flight Simulator did very well on this laptop at detected settings. Unplugging from wall power to run on battery only dropped the frame rates down 30 percent or so. Playing Forza Horizon 4, had frame rates up to the 80's with medium to high settings.
I really like the keyboard, both the feel of the keys, the spacing, and the lighting options.
The 16 inch screen is a good size, got used to it fairly quickly. The display has a high refresh rate, but the colors are a little weak, playing Minecraft with lots of dark areas, its more dark gray than black, and some other colors are slightly off, like some shades of purple. 1080p FHD is still a pretty good resolution for this size of screen and laptop gaming.
The battery life is only about 1 to 1.5 hours when gaming, similar to other gaming laptops I've had. Will get some more mileage out of it with general web use and video streaming, but this is not the type of laptop where you will use it 3 or 4 times on a trip without charging it.
The computer programmer in the house liked it a lot, ran several instances of Unity doing work and didn't overheat, thats an A grade from them.
I would recommend this laptop for gaming and programming.

So far good. The laptop has excellent battery life for non gaming. I watched a movie for close to 2 hours and when I was done I sill had 50 % battery left. When I play a game I would say the lasts close to 2 hours. The display is great Sims 4 and movies looks so good. I am hoping to have this laptop for years to come.

Only used it a dozen times or so. It took me a few days to get the 2 free games and flight simulator installed and updated. I had to set up 3 separate accounts: steam, ubisoft, and microsoft.
The screen went out after 6 weeks. Best Buy was quick to send out a replacement order, but now it's delayed.
After updating to windows 11 it ran really slow so I switched back to windows 10. Coincidentally, the screen went out right around the the time of the win 11 update. I've had half a dozen other laptops in the past and never had a screen go out. Hopefully this was a fluke.
I can't really say anything positive at this time. Giving it 3 stars just because of Best Buy's great service.
