I purchased this for school work for my kid and the possibility of learning how to program. But let’s be honest he’s really wanted this for gaming and he’s pretty happy with it.

A Beautiful Beast

This is a beast of a gaming laptop! I've only used it a couple days so far, but it's been super impressive. I've been able to run my games at full detail settings and the laptop barely breaks a sweat. I'm using Steam for my game library, but it comes with the Omen Gaming Hub installed (Omen is apparently the HP gaming brand).
Once my Steam games were installed, I could actually see and run them from the Omen interface, too. Even if I don't plan to use it to manage my games, it does have the handy System Vitals display which shows CPU/GPU temperatures, utilization, memory usage and upload/download speeds. You can also adjust the cool keyboard backlighting based on key groups. I could see where that might make it easier to keep track of where your hands are on the keyboard. You can also install Light Studio and go crazy with the dynamic key color schemes.
It's a pretty beefy laptop at a little over 5 lbs (and add 1.5 lbs if you're going to carry the power brick, too). But you get a beautiful matte finish 16.1 full HD screen (non-touch) and a 1TB NVMe drive. I don't know if it makes a big difference, but it's an all-AMD machine with the Ryzen 7 CPU and Radeon RX 6600M GPU. It's got plenty of USB and video-out port options, too. I'm able to plug in an external keyboard, mouse, and a joystick using all the onboard ports. I also like that it has the RJ-45 Ethernet interface available, if you ever need it. Wireless has gotten much better over the last few years, but it's still nice to have the cable as a fall-back.
Overall, I'm really happy with this gaming laptop. It feels like it's near the top of what's available these days for a portable gaming machine.

A Beast of a Machine

Coming from a 14 inch screen, this 16.1 inch gaming laptop feels huge, but it earns every inch of real estate it takes up. The matte screen is gorgeous, with vivid colors and a small bezel. I've played Ori and the Blind Forest, Raji, and Halo 4, and the Omen has handled them all with no lag or slowdowns.
The keys on the keyboard have great feedback and travel, but I have small hands and I do notice having to stretch a bit. If you have normal-sized hands, you probably won't notice it. The backlight is easily customizable using the Omen gaming hub. You can also download the Light Studio if you want to add additional colors or special effects.
The speakers sounded great while watching videos, plenty of power, but you'll want a headset for gaming. It has three USB ports, am HDMI port, and an actual ethernet port for wired connection, so plenty of places for your peripherals.
The Omen is whisper quiet on the Hybrid mode, but the fan is slightly noisy when in Performance mode. It's quieter than my Asus Zephyrus, but still seems to run cooler.
Size-wise, I enjoy the extra screen space, but I won't be toting this through any airports. It's pretty heavy by laptop standards, especially if you carry the brick in your bag.
Overall, I really like the Omen.

Out of the box this has sleek packaging and comes with the standard power adapter.
I’m a bit of a casual PC gamer, primarily using my Xbox, Switch, or PlayStation instead but this thing is catching my eye more and more every day. Speaking of eye catching, you won’t catch much glare on this thanks to an anti-glare display, a must have for gamers.
I’ve mostly been playing games on this from my game pass and haven’t experienced any lag or visual issues. If anything, the response feels very quick and the colors are amazing. It supports 1080p which is plenty for a gaming laptop.
It has a quiet mode to keep the fan low if you’re just browsing the net and a performance mode for when it’s time to game that lets the fan crank. Either way, the sound isn’t an issue and hopefully you’ll be using a gaming headset either way,
There’s a few USB ports and an HDMI port, alongside an Ethernet port so you can really use this for anything. My only gripe here would be to drop a USB port for an HDMI port or just add a second HDMI altogether.
There’s plenty of room on the keyboard as the whole thing is quite large, just wish they would’ve condensed the major keys and added a num lock key pad. Speaking of keys… it may sound dumb but one of the highlights of the laptop is the custom-lit keyboard. You can change all kinds of stuff such as which areas of the board light up, dozens of colors, if the colors change or remain steady, and how they change if you chose to do so i.e. should they go in waves, flash, etc. It’s really fun to customize and easy to change.
The speakers aren’t bad, especially for where they’re placed on the laptop. I think they could be a tad better but again, you’ll hopefully be using a gaming headset.
The computer is sturdy and weighs in around 5lbs
There’s no touchscreen surprisingly, which is uncommon for the modern computer but I kind of understand why they did it. 1TB of storage is included which goes a long way.
All that said, between the graphics, quality, storage, speed, and customization, this is a really great gaming laptop that can compare to a lot of low-mid range PCs. Don’t buy it if you’re hoping to have THE BEST gaming system because this isn’t it. Don’t buy it if you’re just going to surf YouTube and work. But if you want the best bang for your buck and a great mid range option, this is an obvious buy.

My teen is using this one as a mix between school use and gaming. She's not into the most intense games. Matter of fact she's playing games that tend to be a couple years old on avg. So this machine tends to do a pretty good job of performing well with AAA titles of yesteryear. I wouldn't expect it to crush at anything brand new.
The display is pretty pleasing overall and renders colors and blacks at a level to be expected at this price-point.We noted that it was a fair amount brighter than the tv she was using to play games on and was quite a bit happier that in dark scenes she was able to see content that was not visible before on her xbox one.
The led colors on the keyboard brought a bit of excitement from my teen. She was stoked to have a machine that had the multi-color keyboard she could customize. While on the topic of the keyboard, this to me is one of it's biggest detractors. I simply am not a fan of these chicklet style keyboards on gaming laptops. For one thing, it's very compact and offers little spacing around/between keys. So for someone with bigger hands it's downright complicated not to push the wrong buttons at times. There's a massive bit of real estate around the keys on the edge of the device...why not spread them out a little. So that being said, if you're going to be a gamer with this....plan on getting a standalone keyboard and mouse.
The CPU performs quite well and the RAM is just enough to get the job done. However, it can't hurt to bump the ram up a bit to 32gb. It gets a little noisy under load as it attempts to funnel out the heat inside the chassis. The GPU is fair, but nothing to write home about.
Battery life is going to be a bit of a problem, but that's true of any "gaming" laptop. When you're running CPU/GPUs at full tilt and active cooling to keep the heat away...they're gonna chew through the batteries. So I wouldn't plan on any untethered gaming marathons. Keep that power cord close by. Another knock is the proprietary power connection. Several laptop manufacturers have been switching to USB-C connectors and those are AWESOME! And then some are sticking with these classic barrel connectors that mean you're stuck with their power supply for the long haul.
It's a bit big for school use, but can certainly do a great job of this if necessary as it has plenty of RAM and CPU to make great presentations and write documents and do web surfing all simultaneously.
It's got plenty of ports for external peripherals which is great because we always have need for several external devices like keyboards, mice, etc. WiFi performance is solid, and the sound quality is about average. Plan on having some good headphones for gaming.
The Omen Gaming Hub is really a bit of bloat and offers no real use or advantage to the experienced user. There's the typical AV and other junk software installed that you end up having to remove. But that comes with the territory on devices like this.
Overall you shouldn't be too disappointed if you're in the market for a gaming machine, but don't want to spend a lot of dough. It comes well appointed and provides a good platform for such. As well it's not overly heavy and can be transported to/from school as needed.

There was a time when I would run from AMD processors if I wanted any kind of performance. Those days are gone. This is a very capable device that really makes me wonder why anyone would want a gaming PC that is not portable.
Speaking of portability the laptop its self comes in at just over 5 pounds. Combine that with the power supply and you are well over 6 pounds. Reasonable for what this is but certainly on the hefty side for casual travel.
The power supply uses a barrel connector. I would prefer a USB C solution but perhaps with the power requirements this is a better solution.
The speakers are actually quite acceptable. Not as good as my gaming headset but certainly the best laptop speakers in my collection.
The OMEN Gaming Hub is a great app that lets you set up all things gaming such as keyboard lighting, cooling, etc.
Fans can be a little loud but I use a cooling base which helps considerably.
The display is sharp and the video is clean and smooth.
All in all this is a great value my nephew was threatening to steal it but I think I convinced him just to visit his cool uncle more now that I have a better gaming platform. The only problem is he tends to hog the thing - when am I going to get a chance to play?!?!
