The Best Gaming Laptop

This is by far my favorite laptop I've ever owned.
I was slightly disappointed by the packaging. In order to take it out of the box I had to flip it upside down and shake it. It was stuck and I was unable to use my fingers to pry it out. So be extra careful when you take this out.
When I got it in my hands I was amazed. I heard somewhere that this is the worlds lightest gaming laptop. This is in fact incredibly light. Might I also add, the matte black finish looks awesome. It is definitely a fingerprint magnet though. I got another 14 inch non-gaming laptop from Best Buy last year. They are almost identical in size. However of course, this one is a lot more powerful and that is amazing to think about. For the most part when you think of a gaming laptop you think of something nearly an inch thick but not this. This laptop can also be opened with one hand which most lighter laptops are known for.
In terms of port selection I think it's perfect. You have a couple USB ports and a couple of USB C ports. You get a headphone jack and HDMI port as well. Usually on gaming laptops you get an ethernet port but with the fast WIFI and USB adapters that exist, there really is no need. I did run an internet test and was able to get over 1000 megs download so no problem there. I'm not sure how I feel about the keyboard and trackpad yet. The keyboard does not get hot while gaming. I'm just not sure how I feel about the typing. I feel with the trackpad you have to click on the bottom left and right. The tap does not always work. I'm so used to my previous laptop working with every tap. Maybe I'll get the hang of it over time and either way, I'll probably be using an external mouse anyway. Also regarding hardware, the built in speakers sound great.
The screen looks amazing. I ended up turning down the resolution to 1920x1200 just for battery sake and for more fps. But without a doubt, this will be the best laptop screen you'll ever look at.
I like the HP Omen Gaming Hub software. The first thing that annoyed me was the keyboard. It was way too bright at night. I was able to reduce the brightness even more, which I don't believe that is a feature on other non-gaming laptops. If you want to get a lot of battery out of this you can. You can turn off the 4060 GPU from being utilized and change the laptop into eco mode from there. It has key assignments, system temps, system usages, and cleaning tools (clear ram, clear junk files). It has everything a gamer could use.
In terms of performance it's awesome. If you use it with light work you can get 5-6 hours. I've also been heavily testing this by playing games and recording. With a game running and OBS recording in 1080p60fps there is not a single hiccup. The video looks perfect as well. I was also doing game development and had the game open. It was slightly slow to launch it compared to my gaming desktop but overall I am still quite impressed. This has more than enough performance. I think more than 16GB of ram should be the standard for gaming laptops but I don't feel like the 16GB held me back. When you push the laptop to its limits you can expect 60-90 minutes of usage. However if you are plugged into the power adapter you'll be ok. Also, the power adapter does recharge the laptop very quickly as well.
I look forward to what HP can accomplish in years to come. I do not see how they can get better than this.

I purchased this laptop about a week ago. It is indeed very good with the graphics. I love the light up keyboard. The only negative thing is the battery life. It don’t stay charge for more than an hour if the laptop is constantly being used.

This is a good setup for those needing a mobile laptop computer for coffee-shop or school use. It's very compact, and features a pretty decent gpu that will handle most games at 1080p with a steady 60fps. Where it really shines for me is the OLED screen. It's just gorgeous! Games like the new Avatar game just look super vivid! It looks great for any content creating you might need to do as well. It really gives you a natural, rich color. I really hope OLED becomes the new normal for it's tough to beat. The Ultra processor is a beast. I was able to easily play Fortnite while letting the AI cores handle my chores in the background. While AI seemed to be the trendy word for CES2024, with the Ultra cpus it seems to at least have a noticeable benefit.
Biggest plus next to the screen quality is the temps. This laptop doesn't barbecue your lap under regular loads. After playing Avatar for an hour, it still managed to get quite warm, but still wasn't to the level of extra crispy that my old 3070 laptop reached.
Bloatware on this is fairly minimum. HP's suite of custom software is squarely in the middle of the pack as far as usability and customization. If you are already in the Omen ecosystem, there isn't any new surprises, and it works well enough. This is definitely a great laptop for college students. it will let them enjoy the latest games at a decent performance, watch the latest Marvel movie in vivid colors, and have more than enough room on the hard drive for their homework assignments. And did I mention the OLED screen? It's GORGEOUS!

This is a really awesome gaming laptop as the title indicates. It is lightning fast from setup all the way to playing the first game. Thanks to the 1TB SSD it holds a lot of games and programs without needing to utilize external storage which slows things down. It also has a decent amount of RAM, but a bump to 32 GB would have added a bit more power.
The video card works great and displayed FPS games as well as RTS’ really smoothly. I wish the screen was a little bit bigger but it works just fine and looks great. It also charges really fast - something I’ve rarely seen in a Windows laptop. Battery life has also been good although I anticipate using it mainly plugged in given the amount of power a gaming laptop uses to run modern games.
Overall, it looks and feels great with a simplistic design. I don’t need it to look like a high end gaming device, I just need it to perform, which it more than does. The RGB keyboard is also a really nice touch. Overall it’s the perfect combination of power and portability.

Mastering the Balance of Play & Everyday Life

Having spent considerable time with the HP Omen Transcend 14 in its specific configuration - Intel Core Ultra 7-155H processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, 16GB of memory, and a generous 1TB SSD, all wrapped in a sleek Shadow Black chassis - I've come to appreciate the nuanced balance it strikes between gaming prowess and daily usability. Here's my firsthand account of what it's like to use this laptop as both a gaming platform and a workhorse.
Design and Build: Stealth and Style
From the moment I unboxed the Omen Transcend 14, its Shadow Black exterior exuded a kind of understated elegance rarely seen in gaming laptops. Its light, thin frame contradicted my initial expectations of bulkiness, making it a constant companion in coffee shops and meetings without attracting undue attention. The build quality feels solid, reassuring me of its durability for daily commutes.
Display: A Visual Delight
The 14-inch 2.8K OLED panel, with a refresh rate of 120Hz, was nothing short of stunning. Whether I was editing photos, watching videos, or diving into my favorite games, the colors popped, blacks were deep, and the action was smooth. The high resolution and OLED technology combined to deliver one of the most immersive visual experiences I've had on a laptop.
Gaming and Performance: A Balanced Act
Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7-155H and the RTX 4060, this Omen Transcend 14 configuration struck a fine balance between gaming performance and productivity. I tested it with a variety of games, including some demanding titles, and found that while I needed to adjust settings for optimal performance, the experience remained enjoyable and immersive. The 16GB of RAM allowed me to multitask with ease, and the 1TB SSD meant I never had to worry about space for my growing game library.
Cooling and Battery Life: Surprisingly Efficient
The thermal management system impressed me, keeping the laptop cool and quiet under most conditions. During intense gaming sessions, it got warm, but never uncomfortably so. Battery life, while not groundbreaking, was sufficient for several hours of work, though gaming drained it much faster, as expected.
Connectivity and Audio: Well-Equipped
The array of ports on the Transcend 14 covered all my needs, from connecting external displays via HDMI to hooking up peripherals through the USB ports. While I missed having an SD card slot, it wasn't a dealbreaker. The audio quality, tuned by HyperX, added a rich layer to games and media, with clear highs and mids that enhanced my overall experience.
Keyboard: A Joy to Type On
The keyboard, with its 4-zone RGB lighting, was a pleasure to use both for gaming and typing out long documents. The keys felt responsive and had just the right amount of travel, making for a comfortable typing experience. I appreciated the ability to customize the lighting, though I found myself often setting it to a single, static color for a more professional look.
Final Impressions
The HP Omen Transcend 14, in this particular configuration, is a masterclass in balancing gaming performance with everyday practicality. Its design allows it to blend into professional settings, while the hardware is capable of handling demanding games and multitasking with ease. While it may not be the ultimate gaming laptop in terms of raw power, its strengths lie in its versatility, impressive display, and portability.
For gamers who value the ability to transition seamlessly between work and play without carrying a bulky, overtly "gamer" laptop, the Omen Transcend 14 is a compelling option. It offers a mix of performance, style, and practicality that's hard to find in the current market, making it a standout choice for those who need a laptop that can do it all.

To look at this laptop closed up, it looks like any other 14” laptop. It’s thin and light, only the Omen logo gives a hint of the power that it’s packing. Mine came equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 laptop GPU, 16 gb of RAM, a 1 tb PCIe SSD, and an awesome 14” 2.8k OLED display. The blacks on OLED are amazingly dark and all the colors really pop. It’s a WOW screen for sure!
It has two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports along with two USB-A ports on the right side, and a single HDMI 2.1 port on the back. I like that the USB-C charge port is on the back, it keeps the cable out of the way.
With the Thunderbolt ports it’s really not an issue that it doesn’t have an ethernet port or an SD card slot, those are easily connected with external adapters.
Battery life was a surprise for me. An hour gaming session took me from 98% down to 15% and it asked me to plug in. It lasts much longer during regular computing use, an hour of surfing only used 12% of a fully charged battery. Recharge time is quick, thanks to the included USB-C fast charger.
There are two cooling fans visible through the mesh bottom and nearly the entire back edge exposes cooling fins. I honestly never really noticed the cooling fans running, you can hear them but they’re not obnoxious.
On the games that I played, using the Windows Game Bar Performance widget, it was showing mostly around 113 to 120 fps except during cutscenes where I saw as high as 200 fps. It did dip into the high 80’s a few times and the video stuttered early on but I was playing while still loading other programs.
The RGB backlit keyboard lights up in four zones and can be customized in the Omen Gaming Hub. The keys have translucent edges so the light can shine out. The brightness can be dimmed if needed. The keys are responsive and have a good click.

2024 is seeing a move that Intel sorely needed. I am truly impressed by the Core Utlra 7 line. Mainly that it provides a real jump in battery life and power per watt. I've had machines that had both Intel and AMD processors recently and this one is the first machine with Windows that I don't have anxiety about walking away from the power cable. For everyday computing, browsing, office-type stuff, and light gaming, it's like this. I don't tend to have my screen turned up high, but even when in a sunny room and the screen is high to compensate, it didn't drop the estimated battery life down to below an hour. I think with some further refinement in Windows, there could be an even bigger improvement. As far as the rest of the machine, HP has done a great job of creating a compact gaming device. I have the version with the RTX 4060, so 8GB of dedicated video memory. So far, I have had no issues playing games such as Hogwarts Legacy at high to ultra settings, and it has a steady 60fps or higher. Lesser games don't even make it sweat. The speakers aren't terrible, but since they are under the keyboard they sound sort of muffled. The keyboard with pudding-style keys are large and tactile, but not in a mechanical way. I would have preferred a little bit of a mechanical feel. The lighting has a zone type grouping, with one group dedicated to the W,A,S,D keys to emphasize them for gaming. I love the fact that there is a ThunderBolt 4 port, but also two USB-A ports! This was a pleasant surprise for such a thin and light laptop. The power cable uses one of the USB-C ports instead of a proprietary port, and the one on the rear of the body is perfect for this. Beside that port is an HDMI port. Options are great. The trackpad is not anything special, and it is a "diving board" style, so the clicks are at the bottom, but the top doesn't really respond to clicking. I prefere a mouse when possible, so this isn't a huge issue for me. The other big performer here is the screen. As an OLED with a high refresh, it's a joy to use. Whether it's for movies, games, or just reading, the colors make everything beautiful. Overall, this little monster is powerful, versatile, and fun to use. I would highly recommend this machine for on-the-go gaming, for travel, and for things like class. HP has given us a great option.

I went to Best Buy to buy a laptop and I had the best help from Josh. He was patient and answered all my questions. His analogies were helpful and painted a picture of how much better this computer would be than other options.

Overall a good laptop. The screen is fantastic, keyboard and trackpad are good, audio is ok. The only drawback to this otherwise great portable gaming laptop is the limitation on the actual GPU. HP in their infinite wisdom have decided to cap the 115 watt RTX 4060 to 50 watts with a 15 watt boost that it never achieves. Unfortunately, i didn't know that until after I bought it. I have since sold this one and purchased a Legion that will actually use the full power the GPU.

“Gaming” laptop that overheats when you play games

This is the worst laptop or computer I have ever owned. Constant overheating, to the point of full shutdowns, any time I try to play a game while charging. Mind you, because this computer’s battery is so bad, you have to plug it in after an hour of play, or it will die. Do yourself a favor, and buy literally any other computer.

Item arrived with defective charging cable that only charges intermittently. I am in a geographically isolated area. Support was completely unhelpful and said my only recourse is to drive 6 hours to a Geek squad. Due to non-existent support for what should be an incredibly easy fix I do not recommend this product.
