Great family computer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The unit comes with its own keyboard and a mouse. The software is standard Windows 10. It comes with McAfee download but you have to pay for service. This computer is excellent for both a long day of work, or play. The setup process is quick easy, lasting no more than a few minutes making it suitable for all ages. Review At first the HP Pavilion has been running like a standard pc. Nothing too extraordinary, nor too bad. There was a small bug where I was unable to interact with anything on the system tray, but that was easily fixed by turning the unit off and on again. Though this glitch was small, it happened more than once and slowly became just a bit tedious to continue to have to restart the unit. I ran just a few tests to view the units ability to handle large tasks. Run a game, run an app, and of course download files. Downloading was the first, and it’s easy to say the Pavilion could handle this simple task. Next was the game. I download the Fortnite, and with a few hiccups here and there, the Pavilion runs rather smooth for not being intended for gaming purposes. After a few hours of run time, the unit is still surprisingly ice cold. Good for long days of work, or play. For a desktop, it is rather light and compact. Easy to move and put most anywhere.

The screen goes blank and she gets blue screens of death. She called HP but they haven't fixed the problem yet.

Tries hard but falls short
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Hp Pavilion 5 series comes in and leaves much to still be desired in the way of design and function. The Hp 5 series is a 1 TB 12gb set up that doesn't really leave much to the imagination. I don't want to dive a whole lot on to the specs and set up as all that info is found right here on Best Buy's site. However what i do want to focus on is what exactly Hp is trying to accomplish and if this is something you should pick up on or pass on. First off out of the box you get the tower, keyboard and mouse. Nothing too exciting about the way the desktop is designed or lights up. At first glance it looks like your run of the mill set up. The mouse is garbage and immediately opted out for my wireless gaming mouse. The keyboard is a basic wired keyboard with no outstanding features in the way of gaming. It seems to me that Hp tried to make this a entry level gaming device but the keyboard is lack luster and offers no mechanical keys. Lets back up and talk about some the basic functions first. You have one hdmi port (sad) and Bluetooth and wireless connectivity to your internet. Bluetooth connectivity allowed for a strong connection to my wireless mouse and headset with no drops which was very nice. Connection to my wireless internet was pretty decent too considering the router is in the basement about 20 feet away however i have a pretty powerful router. You get set up with windows 10 in about a matter of minutes. There are enough programs to do your basic office and home task however don't expect to put together any powerful power point presentations as this was not the main design. The 1 TB is nice and after taking apart the cover it seems there is room to upgrade to more space if you need it. However Hp is using the AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics card so i think 1 TB should do just fine seeing as how this is not a very powerful set up in the way of gaming. You most likely won't be playing too many newer games with ease unless you tone down the graphics to improve frame rate but i'll get to that in a bit. I don't want to waste anymore time so lets just dive right in to what Hp was shooting for with this, which seems to be a entry level gaming device that can also accomplish basic home and office task. The gaming set up is very sub-par and leaves very little room to the imagination. I say this because the current graphics card falls very short in so many ways. The AMD Radeon Vega would be more comparable to Nvidia's GT 1030 in my opinion. The GT 1030 is barely an entry level set up if you can even call it that. There are many more powerful set ups out there but what really gets me is if you wish to upgrade your rig your going to have to drop more cash as the power supply allows for only a limited upgrade. No big deal but just goes to show you how limitied this gaming house really is out of the box. Lets talk gaming so we can get a better understanding of what i mean. If your playing older games on steam or wherever you won't have a problem and you can max out your graphics. For example i was playing Myth and Age of Empires at 1080p with good rates of 40fps. With a wired connection of course, everything ran smooth and i saw no streaking or lag. Lets jump in to some newer games now. Call of duty struggled bad for me. At full settings and 1080p my rate dropped down to 20fps. During high action sequences i started to get some blur and lag on my screen. I had to tone it down(WAY DOWN) before it started to improve. Okay i get it Call of Duty is kind of a high paced cinematic game, so lets try Fortnite. In my opinion (and this is just my opinion) i don't think Fortnite is that beautiful in the way of graphics so i wanted to see how the PC could hold up. NOPE! Still struggled during the fast pace action with frame rates ranging between 15 -20. Here's the bottom line. I have seen Hp personally put out some really good entry level systems out there around this price point that blow this set up out the water. Im really trying to understand what exactly they were trying to accomplish with this. If your a hard core gamer then you don't need to read this review to know this not for you at all. But if your a casual gamer who's looking for a desktop that will allow you for some nice down time after you get done with work and you don't plan on any upgrades ever, then ya this may be a nice set up for you. The lack luster draw of the graphics power house and the ability to do very limited upgrades is a very big draw back for me on this unit as a gaming device. I personally would rather game on laptops as they put out more power than this. But if i am going to to be stationary and game with my desktop it needs to offer alot room for advancement in the way of upgrades. As for me i would pass on this device.

Great Family Computer and Light Gaming
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking for another PC for my kids. I have been reading that the Ryzen CPUs really jumped AMD's performance so I decided to give this HP Pavilion 590-p0044 a try. This HP Pavilion comes with an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G CPU with on board AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics, 12 Gigs of RAM, and a 1 TB Spinning hard drive. In the past, I have had glossy cases which is OK, but I appreciated the subtle embossed front of this case which hides smudges much better. I was very pleased with the inclusion of a USB-C port on the front. In terms of speed, the Ryzen 5 2400G performs well. In Single Core and Quad Core tests, it is on par or single percentage points better against an i5-7400. However, where the i5-7400 only has 4 cores with no hyperthreading, the Ryzen 5 2400G has the equivalent of 4 cores with hyperthreading. So running multithreaded applications is where the Ryzen 5 2400G pulls away from the i5-7400 and gives you something like 60% more processing power. For Graphics power the Ryzen 5 2400G has the AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 built in. While it is not a gaming powerhouse, it does well for light graphics. It certainly leaves the onboard Intel HD Graphics on the equivalent i5 CPU in the dust. I would place the RX Vega 11 just past an Nvidia GT 1030 and well below an Nvidia GTX 1050. But when you consider this RX Vega 11 is built in without having to shell out an extra $100-130 for a discrete video card, you're really getting a great bargain. Included with the PC is a keyboard, mouse and power cord. The power cord is nothing special. The keyboard is a full size keyboard with very little extra space, perfect for someone who wants a full size keyboard but very little desk space. Unfortunately, the mouse is disappointing. I feel they were trying to mimic some design elements of the Apple Magic Mouse, but made the edges a little too sharp. Nothing that would slice open your hand, but just uncomfortable. I believe that HP paired a 1 TB spinning hard drive with this machine to keep final costs low and provide decent storage space. But I would recommend getting a Solid State Drive to properly feed performance of the CPU and memory. I bought a 480 GB SSD hard drive separately to install. Upon opening the case, I discovered the Optical drive was not secured to the drive cage. This is good and bad. Good to allow me a little wiggle room, bad that it caused the optical drive cover to pop off (but the cover snapped back on like nothing happened). The motherboard has one additional SATA port and a power cable neatly tucked to the drive cage. To properly install the SSD with 4 screws, you need to move the existing hard drive to the "B" bay and install the SSD to tha "A" bay. I was able to find an orientation to keep the hard drive in "A" bay and the SSD in "B" bay with only 2 screws, which I think is just enough. After migrating the OS to the SSD, the performance of the system is dramatically better. The motherboard does have an M.2 slot for SSD, but I still get 2.5" SATA drives to give me greater compatibility across my systems. It also has a PciE x1 and x16 port for further expansion. I think the HP Pavilion 590-p0044 system is a great choice for a family computer for typical office work and light gaming. I would recommend replacing the included mouse for something more comfortable and replacing the included hard drive with an SSD to get better performance.

Obsolete system

Not a bad little computer...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a decently powered computer with a somewhat small tower footprint. It has a nice, clean looking front, with easy access SD card reader, headphone jack, 2 USB with 1 USB type C, and comes with a full-size keyboard and mouse (both wired). The keyboard key design is nice, but the mouse has an uncomfortable feel to it, mainly with pointed edges around all sides. I'll be sticking with my favorite wireless mouse and keyboard setup. So far, it seems to play games decently well with the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G 3.6GHz processor with built-in Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics and 12 MB memory (OK "games" = Fortnite for the kids). It also works very well with an OTT DVR program I use (keeps the CPU usage very low during recording, especially compared to my other, older computer, and works great for playback). It does have a 7200 RPM 1TB HDD, but that seems to be fairly slow nowadays with SSDs becoming the norm. It seems to be a little slow on bootup and application startup (and the update to Windows 10 1803 update seemed to take forever compared to another computer I have with an SSD) and the drive noise is quite noticeable. I plan on installing an SSD to help speed things up, using the HDD for the DVR storage. The main usage will be fairly light (emails, internet and homework), which this computer will work great! We'll just leave the heavy gaming to the Xbox One.

Continously freezes up
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Most every time I watch a streaming video or anything on YouTube it freezes up and I have to unplug the system for it to reboot. What is so inconvenient is that I would have to return it to the Geek Squad for an evaluation. And If I have to get another, that would mean another week of reinstalling all my apps and files. Not a happy camper.

Solid for home office use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm pretty happy with this economical system; it is solid, fairly compact, and elegant. It offers reliability and versatility at a fair price. It was easy to set up and start using straight out of the box. It comes with a pretty light and flimsy keyboard and mouse combo, but it's enough to get you started. I shortly replaced the keyboard and mouse with others that I had lying around, and you'd be happier with a firmer keyboard and a heavier mouse. The performance is pretty good for office apps, and I'm using it to do document archival with a high-speed scanner. It does have the memory and processing power to keep up to high-intensity work. It can play games, but I'm not your most demanding gamer. The performance with games like Skyrim and Borderlands 2 is fine for me. I'll probably upgrade the video card at some point. The cool thing about this box is that it's pretty standard architecture. It has room to expand and grow, so I can upgrade it over time if I want to. I'd recommend this as a working computer for school or a home business with a little gaming here and there.
