I am thankful that I never have to go to the store too buy an ink cartridge while in the middle of a report. You can see the ink levels outside the printer. HP patiently guided me step by step for the installation process. Now I can keep more money in my pocket.

Freedom From Ink Cartridges

The HP Smart Tank 5101 All In One Printer is your chance to break free from buying expensive ink cartridges.
Included in the box are 3 color ink bottles (50ml) and 1 black ink bottle (135ml). This is projected to be enough ink to print up to 6000 color or black pages. Filling the tanks is easy and quick. The ink bottles are designed to securely click into the ink tanks eliminating any concerns about spilling ink. The color ink bottles will be empty after refilling the tanks, however the black ink bottle will still have about a third of the ink leftover for you to use at a future date.
Also included are 2 printheads, 1 color and one black. These are designed to slide into clearly designated slots and then locked into place. I had a little bit of an issue with the printhead installation. I would put one printhead in, but when I put the second one in the first one would slide out. I had to repeat this several times before I was able to lock them both into place.
There are "Smart Buttons” for functions like printing color or black copies, printing badges, information, wifi connection, etc. These buttons are bright and intuitive. However, the 1 inch monochrome screen is not illuminated and is very difficult to read. I have to put on my reading glasses and turn on the brightest lights in the room in order to read it.
There is no conventional paper tray. Instead there is a paper feeder in the rear which can hold multiple sheets and feed them. There is also no automatic document feeder, so 2 sided printing becomes a chore. You must take the copy out and refeed it through the paper feeder after turning over the original.
WiFi connection and setup was very easy using the excellent HP Smart App.
The print quality is excellent in both color and black.
Pros:
Ink Tank system is cost effective and easy to refill.
Setup and installation is quick and simple.
Print form any device (mobile, desktop, laptop) with excellent HP Smart App.
Wifi connection is solid. HP has self-healing wifi which detects and resolves any connection issues.
Illuminated Smart Button are easy to read and intuitive.
Print quality is excellent.
Cons:
Small monochrome screen is not illuminated and is very difficult to read.
No automatic document feeder for 2 sided printing or scanning.
No conventional passport tray.
One other possible concern is the life of the printheads. Only time will tell how long they last. The cost of these printheads may negate some of the cost savings of using the smart tanks.
Overall the HP Smart Tank 5101 All In One performs its most important task, which is printing, excellently in both color and black.
The Smart Tank refills should save money in the long term and it's designed to be neat and easy.
Due to the lack of an automatic document feeder, this is more suitable to be in home rather than an office.
I have used HP printers for many years and have always found them to be high quality and this one is no different.
I would highly recommend this if this fits your needs.

Glad to see HP has joined the trend in offering tank filled printers. I'd have to cringe every time I needed an ink cartridge, or heaven forbid 2 or 3 - there goes a $100 bill! Not everything is free, mind you, the upfront cost of these printers is higher, but as time goes on, there are significant savings to be had. Don't forget those cartridge printers generally come with "starter" cartridges, and you're running off for refills in short order.
I'm using this to replace an Epson tank printer which was pretty good aside from the fact that it consistently dropped wifi connection - quite annoying when you're ready to print something. The HP has no such problem, in fact, it boasts "self healing wifi" which seeks & reconnects on it's own if it drops connection.
Out of the box experience went easily, filled the 4 tanks from the provided ink bottles; the hardest part was installing the print heads (one black; one color). Having large hands was a bit difficult to insert your hand into the front slot of the printer while trying to see exactly where it was going.
You must set this up through the HP app, since I have another HP printer this was a real snap. Opened up the app, clicked on new printer, and it picked up the 5101 right off the bat. You're then instructed to print out an alignment sheet, and scan it so that it can align the print heads. It will then print out a test sheet, which was immaculate, clean, crisp text.
There are a couple of reasons why I didn't give it 5 stars. First, the black & white LCD screen is pathetic; measuring less than three quarters of an inch by one inch. I really would like to see at least a 2" screen which is able to offer some plain text as to what is going on as opposed to trying to decipher miniature hieroglyphics.
At 17" wide by 14" deep, it's probably a little bit larger than it could be. If you're tight on desk space there are other multi-functions that might fit better.
Lastly, there's an output arm (I won't even call it a tray) that pivots out at the bottom. I would prefer a full length tray that slides out and hold the entire sheet.
One more favorable observation - it's probably the quietest inkjet that I've owned. General printing & scanning, while not high speed are more than acceptable for this class of printer.

Great Bang For Buck AIO Printer

The HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer is a great at home printer with great app integration through your phone for your everyday printing and scanning needs . First off, follow the instructions exactly how they are detailed in the pictures when setting up this printer. I tried to pair the printer to my PC and laptop before filling up the ink tanks which does not allow the printer to be discovered till everything is installed properly. That being said, it's a super easy installation process with individually filling up each color tank with the provided Ink tubes and then the ink cartridges. You can do the install via the HP Smart app on your phone or through the HP Smart App on your computer. I did the setup on the smart app on my phone with my work laptop and it worked pretty well initially but there were some issues with the Wi-Fi, in that my work Laptop just refused to connect to it wirelessly and had to use the USb-B cable I had from my old printer in order to print. I think this is a work permission thing because it works fine on my personal PC wirelessly, just something to look out for if your company puts a lot of restrictions on your work laptop.
The actual ink tubes for filling the tanks is a really neat feature and states you will get up to 2 years of ink before refilling and it's super easy to fill up. I was a little nervous about the potential of ink spillage but to my surprise there was none whatsoever. The scanner on the printer is decent but if you're scanning multiple documents I recommend using the app on your phone where you just take a picture of all the documents and it will push it through to the HP Smart app on your computer and you can save the document there, much faster than having to put each page on the scanner. My only complaint about this printer is the user interface on the printer, in that it's just a simple LCD display that just has indicators with no black light making it difficult to see since it's located under my desk. I wish it came with a nice touch screen color display where you can interact with the setting directly from the display. Other than that little nitpick, I can say this is a great at home work printer for your everyday printing.

Nifty Home Printer with cool features!

The HP Smart Tank 5101 AIO printer is a capable device for home and perhaps small office printing. I say "perhaps", as this small form factor printer lacks office features like Automatic Duplex Printing, a Document feeder and a paper tray. For home use - it has worked flawlessly through my many computers, iPhones, tablets and Chromebooks. Print quality is quite impressive for such a small unit, and setup was easy.
Unboxing, there's the printer, power cord, 4 bottles of ink and 2 print heads. See Picture. Filling the printer tanks was easy and completely mess free. Not a drop spilled or leaked. I had minor trouble with installing the print heads - likely because I was distracted on a phone call - but once I focused just a little, they went in without issue.
The first thing the printer did was print out an alignment page. Not one for following directions, I didn't realize the printer NEEDED to scan this alignment page before moving on. That confused me a bit and made me open the direction book - and once that was done it was ready to go.
I joined the device to my WiFi using the HP Smart app - an intuitive app that gives you good control over the printer and settings. Airprint worked great and was also easy to use.
There is no paper tray on bottom like I'm used to - it's got a small area on the back that you stand up the paper (100 sheets max). The output tray can handle about 30 sheets before stuff starts falling on the ground - so be careful if you're printing something a bit long. Print speed is decent, not going to complain for such a small printer.
Scanning from the flatbed works well and can create a variety of format types. The copy function works well to, but for me I need the duplex feature AND a document feeder, so this won't be my main office machine.
Overall - very capable, nice print quality, no-mess or fuss ink loading and compact form factor make this a nice addition to the home office!

More ink, less controls

Looking at this printer, you would think you have gone back in time. This is the most simplified printer controls I have seen in years. For being a “smarter” printer, it doesn’t look so smart. But, it still has a lot going on for it and once you learn the functions it isn’t too bad. You are pretty much required to have a device with the HP Smart app to understand it and take advantage of it though. Like when my WiFi messed up, in order to just see if I had an IP, it had to print out a page. In order to get directions on how to fix it, it had to print out 2 pages. All information that you only find out in the app in the first place.
As far as ink goes, I like the ink tank style printers. I have had a couple of them and the only issue I have had with them is speed and if you don’t use them regularly their print heads can dry up and then they require you to reset and fill the tanks again, even if they are over half full. This 5101 isn’t setting any speed records with the 5 ppm color and that feels even slower when you are waiting on a print to come out. But, the quality is there. As I learned the hard way too, quality really depends on the paper you are using, especially with photos.
The printer functions locally are just for copy in color, black & white or ID, WiFi, Info, Cancel and an arrow. Which light up when the feature is available such as after you open the scanner lid. Paper sizes are set through the app with 3 sizes set as small, medium, large or 4x6, 5x7, 8.5x11 by default, pending what is in the feed tray. As for the app, it just seems to open things on the web for you which really aren’t directly for your printer, besides the local web interface. Like all help and support type questions just lead to generic pages that talk about all their printers and services.
Overall, it’s better than paying monthly for their ink services to have so much capability available. I just feel that it has been oversimplified forcing you to use your phone for simple functions.

Does It's Job, Could Be Better...

The HP is a no frills, compact, all-in-one printer made from 45% recycled plastic. The Ink Tank and Ink Bottle design allows for quick, mess free refilling process when needed. Although it seems like a good design from face value, I quickly learned there are several drawbacks or limitations due to the design itself. For home or infrequent use, this might be acceptable but for office or frequent use this might not be the best choice.
In the Box:
- HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer
- Original HP 32XL 135-ml Black Ink Bottle
- Original HP 31 Cyan Ink Bottle
- Original HP 31 Magenta Ink Bottle
- Original HP 31 Yellow Ink Bottle
- HP Smart Tank Printhead
- Manual, Setup Guide, Warranty Info
- Power Cord
Setup:
At first I was a little thrown back by the setup process of this printer. It requires un-packaging, installing the print heads, and filling the ink tanks in addition to traditional setup of powering the unit on and setting up the software. Quickly I realized this isn’t a daunting task and it went by fairly quickly although I would set aside 30 minutes to do this.
I really praise HP for the software setup as this can be done from the HP app on your smartphone or PC. I already had the software on my PC but chose to use the mobile app for this unit. It was very easy and everything went smoothly. Once it was connected to my Wi-Fi, I was able to control many aspects of the printer which I have never used before in such a fashion.
The physical setup of installing the print heads and filling the ink tanks wasn’t bad either but it did require reading the directions to avoid any missteps. HP first tells you to install the ink. Basically open the bottle, turn it upside down, and snap it onto the correct tank filler. This truly is a no mess design as long as you let the tank fill before removing the bottle. You should have a little black left and the tanks require all the color ink provided. Installing the print heads was a little different but essentially you unlock the holder, pull a shipping piece out (CAREFUL! There is a splash of ink on it) and snap the two heads into place. It was not difficult but I had never done this before so it was new to me.
The paper tray… well let’s just say it’s there.
Usage:
So after using the printer after a few days I have come to dislike more of the physical design vs the performance of the unit itself. The paper tray doesn’t hold a ton of paper so you’ll be refilling it often. At least it is out in the open, right? The 1x1” monochromtic display is incredibly hard to read and is not backlit. Not to mention it is so small that you really need to memorize the icons and lights on the buttons to know what it going on. The printer does have a few physical buttons which are nice but again it is hard to know what exactly is going on. If you control the unit from your computer or app, it makes it much more intuitive and easy to use. Luckily, this printer integrates well on the software side otherwise this could be a disaster.
The physical printing speed and quality is good and what you should expect from a new printer of this price and size. I would say it might be a little slower than my previous unit. The images come out clean and clear both print and digital. There is no automatic document feeder so any 2 sided documents or several pages in a row will need to be manually placed onto the scanner. This is not something I used often but my last compact printer had this function so it’s a worthy note. This also does not do duplex printing which is one area I used often. Given this is a manual process it really is a downside.
Overall:
This HP printer does everything it should as an all-in-one design. It prints, scans, copies, and more but with some complexity that shouldn’t be required. The smart tank design is very neat and works well for refilling the tanks. It should be more cost effective over time but the main concern would be the print heads staying unclogged in occasional use but that does for every ink jet printer. The lack of a paper tray, duplex printing, and easy to use screen are the biggest shortcomings I would like to see. As a whole, I would strongly consider what you want in a printer and whether this model fits your needs. I am sure HP has other models that might work better if this one is missing something you want/need.
Pros:
- Made from recycled plastics
- Compact(ish) Design
- Ink Tank (Refillable)
- Setup/Software
- Print Quality
Cons:
- Lack of Paper Tray
- Small Screen
- No Duplex Printing/Paper Feeder
- Shorter Power Cord, Plugs in Backside (5 Feet?)

Bottle ink reduces plastic waste and cost

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The bottled ink reduces the waste or need to recycle an ink cartridge. HP states that a family or small home office can expect two years of printing before requiring refilling. I found the fillig process safe, easy and fast. The black ink bottle can fill the tank twice. The great thig is how well the fill process went. Not a drop leaked during the fill. No mess.
It is a bit intimidating to install the print heads. he color coding and install manual had clear illustrations and instructions.
I have an EERO router which required a bit of extra work. EERO does not allow nor does it have a WPS feature. EERO settings allow one to temporarily disable the 5mz band. This makes it easy for the HP printer to find the 2.4mz band. Too bad it doesn't allow the higher frequency.
Once the Wi-Fi was set, HP Smart app did the rest. I was able to use direct printing from my Motorola android phone, and my iPad pro. Connectivity there is easy. HP smart prints and scans for the PC (Windows). I use FileCenter as a scanning platform and filing system for my home office. While it prefers a TWAIN driver, it did work with HP's driver.
The printer scanned perfectly. High resolution PDF's and JPGs resulted. Printing was also great. I didn't see if it allows for duplex printing.

I’m very impressed with this printer! Setup was quick and seamless, and the ink bottles were easy to fill without any mess. The print quality is crisp for both documents and photos, and it’s surprisingly quiet during operation. I also love that it includes two years of ink—it’s a huge money saver. The wireless connectivity works perfectly with my laptop and phone, and the HP Smart app makes printing and scanning effortless. Definitely one of the best home office purchases I’ve made this year!
