Recommend the 15" w/out OLED Screen

I will start with the good, which there is a lot of, but in summary: 1) Haven't found anything I need it to do that it can't and I multi-task quite often. 2) OLED display is phenomenal 3) Size is fantastic for traveling The bad (why only 4 stars): 1) OLED drains battery life and really isn't necessary on such a small machine 2) Ports for peripherals are very lacking In short, I went back and forth over this and the 15" version. I wanted a more compact machine and the OLED was so stunning I opted for it. However, after using it for almost a year, I wish I had gone with the 15" with more memory, peripheral ports, and longer battery with a normal LED screen. Don't get me wrong, I love my little Spectre, but wish I had gone with the other for basically the same price at the time.

    The Screen, the SCREEN!!!

The Screen on this 13 is absolutely STUNNING - the clarity and contrast are very Next Level. The Processor is a workhorse, not a racehorse - no surprise there. The WiFi 6, however IS a racehorse. this is what you pay your cable provider for - SPEEEEEED. Performance is noticeable all day long. All of that is nice, and the Backlight on the keyboard is serious, too. All really comes down to the screen and the brilliant picture - You won't regret it!!

    It’s ok!

Decent for low impact work! A few years in and the screen is starting to fail, and any combo of a video call and a browser brings it to a halt. Outside of that scenario it’s ok!

    Premium Windows Lapper

Dig the styling, definitely has gotten me compliments in the past for looks. Performance wise, you know what you're getting and might be surprised on how fast it performs. Ultimately you need to ask yourself if you need the touch screen and OLED. If you don't care for either there are better and more frugal options out there. Surprisingly the MacBook Air is the better value here and I wish it wasn't the case.

I wanted to love this machine, but I only like it.

The wife wanted to buy her own laptop as she got sick of her Chromebook we'd bought out of desperation months ago. I was totally on board, as the computer does have lots going for it. Once we got a few days into it however, I must say i'm left wanting more for such a high cost. The good: -AMAZING display. This HP is a masterclass of colors and crisp image and video. -Performs quite well, especially considering this is the base i5/8gb ram model. -Keyboard feels awesome, love the travel and overall feel of using this keyboard. -Trackpad is smooth and gestures are responsive. -The speakers sound good for a 13 inch laptop, very loud and clear, but I wouldn't look to edit music on this laptop's speakers alone. -Touchscreen is very good! I feel very snappy response time to my touch and rarely find it misjudging what I am clicking. Scrolling sites is very smooth and drawing is tons of fun! -Good facial recognition and finger print scanner, and ports are pretty good, giving you one usb-a and 2 usb-c ports along with a micro-sd card slot and headphone jack. The Bad: -Battery life is nowhere near the advertised length. I can get through about 5 hours of 60% brightness YouTube videos until it gets to 10%. This is pathetic, especially considering the specs of the machine shouldn't demand much power at all minus the display. -The build quality is disappointing on a high-end laptop such as this. I've noticed a click underneath the trackpad(on the bottom of the laptop)when pressure is applied, and the left hinge is uneven and sometimes clicks when rotated past standard "clamshell" position. Overall, I had a lot more good to say about this computer than bad. I have long hated HP for its general association with "cheap" or "entry-level" laptops you'd find at Walmart for 200 bucks with a dual-core CPU and an ancient iGPU. This spectre has shown me HP IS capable of making a nice non-gamer oriented machine, however the negatives are worth remembering before you buy. Display models will not always represent the laptop build quality you will receive, as I felt reassured when the hinges on the store model were free of the dreaded click, only to find my brand new laptop DOES have it. But don't let me scare you away, this is a wonderful laptop, but would I choose it as my ONLY laptop? I don't think I could say yes to that, at least not until they fix the build quality and battery.

    Sound hardware is junk.

This is a nice size, nice keyboard, good looking screen resolution but the sound hardware is junk. Mine went out and troubleshooting failed to fix it. HP tech support could also not fix it after three calls and 3 hours messing with software and drivers. I'd NOT buy another HP.

Stunning Desing, Average performance, Poor Webcam!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is a review based on my first 2 weeks of usage. Pros: The design is stunning, materials and exterior look premium. It is indeed the most stylish laptop I've ever had. The screen quality/resolution is superb and the sound quality is good. Has all the basic ports (HDMI, USB, headphone jack, car reader). Cons The performance is average only for such a premium laptop. Fan noise is almost consistent. WEBCAM IS RIDICULOUSLY POOR!! In the age of online meetings, it is such a shame that HP didn't care to put at least an okay camera. I hate doing video calls on this laptop and now plan to buy an external one. The fingerprint sensor is a hit and miss. login via face recognition is alright. Overall speed+performance is also average, if not just above average. My previous laptop, 3-year-old yoga 720, sometimes works much faster in comparison. I do think the pen gets handy if you intend to do drawings. In summary, fan noise, poor webcam, and just above average speed takes my 2 points off. The design, built quality, screen quality, audio wins the 3 points. I certainly think that hp should do better on this one.

    Random Shut Downs

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have had two HP Spectre x360's that suffered the same fate, random shutdowns. When it does shut down, it does not simply turn on by pushing the on button. You have to employ a couple of methods. One( a hard reset) is unplugging all inputs including the power cord, holding the on button for at least ten seconds, plugging the power cord back in a press the on button and pray. Sometimes that works, sometime it work when you pull the power cord back out again. And sometimes you have to take more drastic measures involving a clear CMOS involving the pressing the of Windows and V key simultaneously. Look it up. Unless they can prove that this issue has been solved I would avoid this model since whenever it shuts down I have to hold by breath and hope that I don't have a brick. It also is quite loud with the fan running 90% of the time.

    Open Box Item Doesn't Work

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this as "open box excellent". It did look fine but I saw a red flag right away. When first turning it on, it gave an error that it was not shut down correctly. It booted up and I went through the setup and noticed the right speaker was dead. After setup I tested it with a few apps and still no sound from the right speaker. Went through the HP updates hoping an updated driver would fix it but that didn't work. Did a Windows update and that really screwed it up. Got so many system errors and hardly anything works. I even get an error trying to do a factory reset. Keeps saying that program is incomparable. I really wanted this computer. So quick and such a nice screen. It's useless now so it has to go back. I will go with another brand I guess.

Way too many glitches/flaws-unacceptable for price

I wanted to love this PC but I can't! It has flaws that cannot be ignored. I got it for school in October 2020 or 7 months ago for school. While the specs are good, the functionality is HORRIBLE! 1. The audio and mic are terrible quality! The audio/mic keeps going in and out. I cannot go through a single zoom session without one or the other and sometimes both failing in the middle of the class. I would literally be talking to a professor and the audio/mic would go out, sometimes mid-sentence. Just like that! And I'd be left hanging without an answer, having to scramble and type in chat for the professor to please excuse me, my audio failed! How embarrassing, how frustrating, but more importantly - how disappointing that for having paid almost $2000 ($1700+taxes) I am getting such crap that can't even work for a few hours! I have addressed this issue with the HP support on several occasions, have escalated this issue to a higher level of support - nothing! No one could figure out why it was happening, no one could figure out how to fix it. One time I was on the phone with them for 5 hours! Yes, you heard that right - for FIVE HOURS! That's FIVE HOURS of my life wasted because obviously, these people had no idea what they were doing! And so after FIVE HOURS still, no one was able to fix the issue or even determine what was causing the audio/mic to fail. That also shows HP support in a negative light - 5 hours, 3 different support "specialists", a supervising support "specialist" and no one knew what the issue was? BTW I put "specialist" in quotation marks for a reason. 2. The curser jumps constantly and unpredictably! I would be typing something and suddenly I'd find that the curser has jumped to some other part of the document without any indication or me doing anything. All by itself. So I have to interrupt my work and return the cursor back to where it's supposed to be. Again, spent 4 hours on the phone with 3 different people ("specialists") from HP support and no one knew why or how to fix it. Seriously??? These are not just minor glitches. They impede work, they are DETRIMENTAL to progress, they sometimes make me do double work - that is just UNACCEPTABLE!!!! UNACCEPTABLE! For the price of this computer, I could have and SHOULD have bought a MAC!!!!! My mistake! Yes, its appearance is very nice, but who cares about what it looks like if it can't work properly. Appearance is the least attribute to consider when buying a laptop, especially one that is supposedly technologically advanced! DO NOT BUY!
