A great sub-3lb notebook with few compromises
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A great compromise between size/weight and functionality/performance and it comes with 2-thunderbolt/USB-C and 1-USB-A port! Love the screen. I've been using 3:2 screens for five years (Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Pro 7 and Surface Book) and wouldn't go down to a 16:9 or 16:10. The OLED screen is gorgeous with very intense colors and deep blacks. Battery life is good for an OLED screen. Three detractors though: 1) there's no INSERT key 2) the first PC had a faulty microSD card reader (but we discovered that in the first day and BestBuy swapped it for a new machine - THANK YOU BB). 3) There a ton of bloatware on it. Took a long time to remove it all. Apart from that, a great machine. So good that we now have two of them, one from BestBuy and one direct from HP - no difference between them.

Great Hardware; Average Software & Too Much Bloats
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The laptop satisfy my needs (so far) and it have a great 3:2 screen ratio. The functions are much faster than my 4 years old Core i5 Asus. Pros: -Shipping was great as I got an option for Free Next Day Shipping -The price was within my range at the time of purchase, which was $300 off the original $1699. -The product arrived as described. It came with the laptop, the pen, the laptop sleeve, and the charger. Everything was packaged nicely in the box that have the same accent as the laptop, which I chose nightfall black with bronzy accent. -All the apps started blazing fast after startup. -Pen works and attaches itself somewhat firmly to the left side of the laptop, which is still better than just having it lying around. -Headphone jack is still there. But this is only because I have old headphones which still need wires. -Antivirus software, gift from Best Buy for 6 months and up to 3 devices. Cons: -Software errors. I charged the laptop fully first before turning it on for the first time. The first screen I encountered was a flicking blue screen (with :( error). I endured it pass the screen for the computer to restart. Then came the set-up. It restarted itself about 7 times, each restart occurred after each type of set up (i.e. language, agreements, user logins, etc.). I have to restart the set-up all over through EACH STEP each time it restarted. I thought I got a lemon. Luckily I got passed all the errors and successfully gotten into the desktop. So the first thing I went to do was go to hp.com/support website to update the BIOS. So far I haven't encounter another blue screen (fingers cross). Another problem with software is that HP came with too much bloatware, and sometimes I have two types of the same (i.e. HP Display). Why can't they just combined it all into one? And when I goes to remove some that I don't need, I still have residual software icons, tray icons, support files, etc. -Heck of a time to update windows 10. The device was set to auto-update. So I went through several rounds of update until I got the 2020-11 Cumulative update in which the error code noted that they cannot find a source to restore/use the disk image. I tried several auto helpdesk/assistant from HP and Microsoft but none of that work, for 4-5 days. I couldn't get to a real person on the usual working hours because I was only configuring this afterhours. By the time I've almost gotten ready to return this to Best Buy, Microsoft came out with the 2020-12 Cumulative update which resolve my update problems. But it was frustrating none the less. -Fan noise: Fan was super loud, but only when it is working, which happened to be when I have too many apps or am updating. Usually the laptop stays pretty quiet. -Pen sensitivity: Sometimes the pen works great, sometimes it doesn't register by the screen. However, I figured out the trick, which is to hold it down longer than you would need compared to real pens (this is when you are selecting something; otherwise, drawing and writing came very naturally). Of course, I still need more time with it to figure out additional notes (hopefully more pros and cons). But I am satisfied with this version HP Spectre x360 at this time.

An artistic and technological triumph
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Have you ever run across an old cellphone cowering in the back of a drawer, embarrassed to be seen in the company of current models? The HP Spectre x360 will make your older laptop feel that way. Spectre is lightweight yet solid, with a huge screen for such a small package (best appreciated if this is a work machine; if you're watching movies and video you might prefer a 16:9 model), elegant build esthetics, superfast boot, and an amazing OLED display that's strikingly bright and sharp. You'll want to polish the fingerprints off of it (both the screen and the case) frequently to keep the look of fine crystal from being spoiled. I experienced one hiccup updating windows but it recovered and it's easy to blame Microsoft for that one. I'm looking forward to exploring its tablet mode capabilities.

Definitely a very good convertible laptop
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great laptop with specs that meet almost all of my needs for processing, surfing and multi-tasking. The battery life is considerably better than a Samsung Life 360. My only wish is that the volume of the speakers were a bit louder, but the speakers are adequate. The keyboard is responsive and the controls/settings are easy to set. I can get through an average day without needing to plug in after an overnight charge. This is the best of 3 high end laptops that I tried out. It is a keeper.

Great screen but some flaws for the price
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros - The screen is great! Awesome for multitasking with more vertical screen real estate. - Keyboard is good. I like the key size and travel. The palm rest also works for me as its wider than the 13" where my palms ended up off the laptop. So this 14" is better if you're constantly on the keyboard, but will also depend on hand size. - Also works with Surface Pen. The magnet for the included HP pen works pretty well though not as well as a Surface Pro. Included pen charges via USB-C too, nice to not have to use AAAA batteries like Surface Pen. - I'm a fan of the USB-C placement though it would have been great to have 1 more on the left diagonal side. - Leather case included. Packaging was great. More to be desired - Battery life is ok for me... I'm getting about 6-8 hours without anything heavy running, mostly web browsing/streaming video but the screen definitely takes its toll. What's the point in trying to go 10ish hours in Battery Saver/low performance settings? - Audio is ok for me. Other reviews I've read are right in that you may get some muffling of sound/vibrating of the laptop. - The fan can get loud, mostly when plugged in vs. on battery. Also seems a little random. - I rather have the power button on the side vs. on the keyboard with an LED that's constantly on. - The camera off button is a cool feature but rather just have a slider that physically covers the camera like Thinkpads. Also dislike that having it covered is also a constant orange LED light that's on. Same with the MIC button, which if it's on the majority of the time, would rather have it on when I'm using it, like a recording light.

HP - You have outdone yourselves!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Verdict: Buy this laptop and go about your day to day life with a smile on your face. First time writing a review because it’s the first time I have purchased a laptop that lives up to expectations. I have not bought a windows machine in 20 years. In fact, before buying this HP Spectre I only trusted Apple Mac Book pros. It has gotten to the point that I can’t justify buying Apple laptops as they are overpriced with out little value. Before settling on this HP laptop. I bought and returned MS Surface Book, XPS 13, and a Lenovo X1 2n1. All these laptops were rated high by all the reviews and all fell short of being capable of performing basic processing tasks before they started to melt. Pros: Surprises, you will find them everyone. There are a lot of them but going to focus on privacy. Love the privacy button on the camera and microphone. For the camera the buttons on the keyboard shows when privacy settings are enabled but also you can see the camera is covered by a small vail. Nicely done HP. Most others have a cover, but it must be manually done by sliding a shutter that is hard to find or move. The microphone is a little different, you can assume that the LED light on the mic shows that it is disabled. But in this day an age all this really puts a nice finish to a high end product. Screen: The brightness of the screen is about 400 nits and the size and bevels are just perfect. The OLED screen looks amazing for day to day tasks. Word, Email, Signing PDF, surfing the net etc. Now I am still messing around with the color when watching Netflix or streaming movies. The colors are either to dark or too bright for my liking, but I guess that is more of a personal preference. Speakers & Sound: Very good quality. Its not as loud as a MacBook pro but you will still get very nice sound. Not a deal breaker for me. Keyboard/Trackpad: Perfect. The size of screen 3:2 allows for a better keyboard experience. The keyboard does not feel cramped, in fact I find my self reaching for keys as there is more real estate that I am not used to having. Ports: For me its perfect. I use USB from time to time, so I like that I don’t have to rely on a dongle. I also use it to connect smart card adapter so it’s awesome. I would have liked 1 more usb-c port but I understand as the laptop is so light and portable. I usually hook up monitor and then power so I use up the usb-c ports. Also, you will notice the usb-c ports are 4th gen so you will be future proof and support output of 4K displays. Price: I am going to put this in as a plus although this is not a cheap laptop. The reason for the plus is that if you shop and compare prices for any i7 intel chip on mobile platforms with 16 GB of RAM you will pay well over $1.5K and with Apple you will pay double if not triple this price point. This Intel Evo clocks a 2.8 GHz base which it is double its predecessor. Now this bad boy has 1Tb of storage which is insane for this price point. I can create virtual machines, download movies and create videos on this machine with no issues of running out of storage anytime soon. Cons: The fans kick in occasionally, but it is acceptable. Need to apply all the HP driver updates and MS updates. Once they have been applied the fan kicks in from time to time. I ran 4 windows with 4K display and it ran smoothly with little fan noise kicking in from time to time. I also had a 1080p display monitor. The pen and digital content creating: So, I might be picky here as I also own an iPad Pro and the experience as a tablet cannot be compared. I use the iPad Pro for digital drawing, and it is a very nice experience. What they designed this for is for signing and light sketching. This is not a tablet so don’t be surprised if you don’t get a full experience. Battery: Its ok but I have never seen a pc do well in this category. I don’t use this machine for business but I do use it quite a bit throughout the day. I would say real world battery life is about 4-6 hours at most. Maybe more if you fiddle around with settings. However, this is not a deal breaker for me as I am sitting at the desk and find power at any time.

Saved the day! No family feuds necessary.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm in tech so purchasing laptops isn't typically an issue for me however, when my wife spilled water on her old laptop and needed a new one I was scared to death. As a teacher it had to be lightweight but with an all day battery and easy to use, the pressure was intense. After much searching and praying I settled on the Spectre x360 after a cursory glance over by my wife for initial approval. Upon it's arrival, setup was fairly quick. So too was the upgrade to Windows 11. Even though there was much consternation on my part about the upgrade, the UI changes weren't so different as to cause a commotion in the house. The typical Google Chrome and productivity apps installed seamlessly. If I had any complaints it would be these in order of importance. 1. The 16GB of memory is onboard and not upgradable. For a typical user this may not be a big deal. I'm just not sure why HP wouldn't futureproof this machine to accommodate application/OS needs down the road. I have no doubt it's a size constraint as a result of the design but it's hard to swallow that there's effectively an expiration date on this machine given it's price point. I almost took a star away for this. 2. There is a lot of bloatware and if like many end users you just click through the 'setup' you'll end up with plenty of extra installed. In fact at one point running through the setup it seemed you couldn't complete it until installing a VPN offer. I just exited out but for anyone bothered by the fact the command center continues to say 'Finish setup' it will be annoying. I didn't worry with figuring it out, but I did read that doing a fresh Windows install to avoid it may not be as straight forward as I'd like. 3. This laptop like many now only has USB-C ports for connectivity. Plan on buying a specialty USB-C to HDMI cable or USB-C to HDMI display adapter. This is especially important when using it in schools where you're guaranteed to need interoperability with old outdated equipment. 4. Don't expect to charge the pen while it's magnetically attached to the laptop unless your house doesn't have clumsy humans, dog tails, small children or gremlins that like to knock it off which means you inevitably walk way with the pen sitting on the floor. I fully expect the pen to be lost or put in the techno timeout drawer to rot within the next month.

It's a Powerhouse!!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am quite surprised what a little powerhouse this machine is! I multi task with up to 20 tabs open at one time and have not had any slow down. The touchscreen is sensitive and the included stylus makes it easy to use as a white board. It would have been nice to have an onboard storage slot for the pen. As is, it has a magnetic side that allows it to rest on the side of your closed laptop, but easily falls off. The speakers leave a lot to be desired. I have it at 100 most of the time and can barely hear some videos or music. Runs a little hot and when the fan does kick in, it is relatively loud. The 13.5 screen was a large adjustment for me and I am still struggling with getting accustomed to it since switching from another HP 17" screen. I have owned numerous HPs and the main problem I've had with them is that the hinges start separating from the machine which pulls up the entire frame and makes it inoperable. I am loving the full spectrum hinges that are intended to handle the convertibility of this laptop. Overall, very pleased. Just be prepared to purchase additional speakers and a cooling pad.

Excellent Laptop, premium quality
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Awesome laptop. Disappointed that i missed just before cyber Monday (i could have saved 300 dollars). The display is amazing, and the tiger lake graphics has really surprised me of what it can achieve. Plays most online MMORPG games at low-medium settings with ease. I can compile my programs very fast for my work related items. The build quality is very nice, and it is the right size for a laptop. My only wish would be that it had 2 standard usb ports, but that is minor. The keyboard is backlit and has a great feel when typing. Battery life while working was just over 7 hours (doing heavy work). This system is very responsive, and I am very happy with my purchase. I definitely recommend, however it is a little pricey but it is a solid performer for its class.

Hot model! Hard to get!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Fantastic laptop. Hard to find in stock. Specs are a great step up from the model we purchased in 2017 (which still runs very well - BTW). Aspect ratio took a little getting used to, but give more vertical screen space when working on documents or scrolling down a web page. Like previous models (and almost all competitor models with current, high-speed CPUs), this model runs a little hot. The fan does a good job of preventing overheat shutdowns without being ridiculously loud. (I have a Dell Precision 7550 that sounds like a jet engine spinning up!) Despite the heat and high speed, battery life seems pretty good so far. You won't get Chromebook battery life, but definitely get through half the day. This beauty runs so well, that it will be paired with a port replicator and ultrawide monitor to replace an aging HP all-in-one. Would definitely perform well through 4 years of college, work well for a small business, or certainly for personal use, to include some light gaming. A little on the expensive side, but very similar a comparably spec'd DIY build PC.

Gorgeous Machine!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computer is so sexy! Here's some things I love about it: - The keyboard! It is immaculate. The clicking sound is amazing - The screen ratio! It is very unique, it is less rectangular than most computers and more square. It has improved my screen experince a lot - the face recognition log-in feature. It does this cute animation when it looks for you and it makes me happy each time I open my computer - The stylus. Its just great. - Track pad size. This is actually the spectre with the largest trackpad and the size is great! - the mic. Great for zoom calls! Immaculate background noise cancellation. - the look. so premium. so nice. very sexy. I feel expensive every time I pull this out in public. Things I am not liking - camera quality. It's pretty crappy, especially since this is almost a $3,000 machine. Do better HP... - The sound quality. Also really crappy. It is very low and very base centered, meaning that higher sounds are hard to hear. Its awful trying to listen to things with the fan on/other background noise. Even the old Lenovo 2-in-1s have better sound quality (and camera) - the trackpad is nice, but extraaa sensitive. At the end of the day, the things on my cons list were expected, and definitely do not outweigh the cons. If you want a 2-in-1, this is a fantastic option.

Excellent Value and Excellent performance
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great computer , very good value for the price that you are paying. Keep in mind, this computer comes with a lot of bloatware, I highly recommend doing a clean install of Windows to get the best experience out of this machine. Display is sharp and crisp, I can very bright and I can easily work outdoors. Battery life, its good enough. I use this laptop to run virtual machines so keep a charger handy if you plan on having the laptop run on performance mode. Speakers - use Movie Mode on the B&B app , turn up the bass for best audio quality. Keyboard: I got a lemon the first time where the palm rest would crack, BestBuy was good on getting me a replacement. Key travel is excellent as I do a lot of writing and spreadsheet work on it. Windows 11: The laptop includes a free purchase to upgrade with Windows 10. So far, the upgrade works as intended and should be fine for must consumer and power users. Overall verdict: If you're looking a thin laptop, with a killer display, and performance this is it. My only con is all the bloatware that this PC comes with, if you're looking to get the best experience, please do yourself a favor and youtube how to install a clean Windows 10/11 image. You wont be disappointed.

Fantastic laptop with a few quirks
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great little computer. It's snappy, beautiful to look at and very well constructed. It has gorgeous OLED screen at the most practical 3:2 golden ratio form factor. The blacks are so black it wouldn't distract you when watching movies at wider aspect ratios. After using Thinkpad X1 as my daily driver, I am truly amazed at the battery life of this little HP's marvel at ~8hrs of regular use. Your mileage may vary. The two negatives in my opinion are the pen and tablet implementations: (1) The pen appears cheaply made and bulky. The magnetic attachment of the pen to the laptop is flimsy. Handwriting with this pen is rather choppy; so much so that I no longer use this option at all. (2) In tablet mode there is no way to wake up the screen by tapping on it and with keyboard disabled the only way to bring the screen back to life is to swing it back to laptop mode... Very impractical. I searched internet for a solution but there is none! Bewildering. If HP could improve on these two aspects in the next gen, they would succeed in making a perfect laptop indeed.

So far a very good premium 2-in-1 option
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Last year HP revised their premium product lines with the Spectre series, making OLED, a slim form factor, shrunken screen bezel, and 4k a premium option to those willing to pay. The computers got great reviews and gave HP an option to compete with popular premium PC's like the Dell XPS line and Lenovo Yoga series. I originally bought the 13" 2019 Spectre convertible with all the features I could, only to end up selling it because of some quality control issues I experienced with the first two units I owned. Fast forward a year later, and HP has refreshed their premium product lines with Spectre models in multiple sizes, including this 14" model, which is completely new to the lineup. I had waited to see what other convertibles were available this holiday season. I was pretty much sold on having an OLED screen, and there still aren't that many options out there. I ended up giving HP a second chance and crossing my fingers. Build Quality: Excellent out of the box. The PC feels very solid. The brushed metal surfaces (aside from a plastic bottom), give the computer a very premium feel. HP appears to have improved their quality control: no loose track pad, no major "popping noises" in the palm rest area, and no jammed keys (yes, these are all things I experienced with the previous generation). The hinges have a very firm feel, allowing the screen to hold any position you want with confidence. The computer is fairly bulky to use as a tablet, but the unit still folds into one nicely when needed. The computer weighs less than it's looks might suggest. Keyboard/Trackpad: No complaints. The keys have a nice, smooth travel and good spacing between them. They are not loud to type on. The backlit keys get very bright and offer 2 levels of brightness. Only downside is that the arrow keys feel cramped. The trackpad is very generous in size and nicely responsive. Screen: I'm biased toward having an OLED display. I simply feel they look better than more traditional LED-based displays, even the nice ones from competing higher end PC lines. Colors simply look richer and more vibrant. Contrast is also better, which in my opinion is more important than higher peak brightness. My experience with the 2019 Spectre OLED display was a mixed bag. The two units I had (the first of which was returned) had varying degrees of gray-uniformity issues, where banding/gradation/blooming could be noted on gray tones, like when viewing file folders within windows under the dark-mode setting. The blooming was bad enough on the first unit to cause video to look abnormally brighter at the center of the screen, which unfortunately was very distracting. I also didn't like how the touch screen's capacitive surface appeared. On close inspection, it appeared as though the screen was covered in black dots in a diamond shape fashion. A few reviews noticed this same observation as well, though most people online weren't sensitive to it (I suppose it comes down to a matter of preference). The touch capacitive surface on this screen is different. It is much more uniform and less obtrusive, though whites still look a bit grainy (some competing screens like the Galaxy Chromebook have an even less noticeable screen door effect). Overall, this is a better OLED panel than the 2019 line I used. My particular unit has virtually zero color uniformity issues, which is nice (some level of uniformity discrepancy is considered normal and shouldn't dissuade you unless it's truly bad or distracting). Overall, the screen is very colorful, and can get very bright. I have had some experience with the Galaxy Chromebook, which also has an OLED panel. Comparing the two, the HP OLED seemed a bit less punchy in terms of color saturation, but had better peak brightness. The resolution on the HP is not quite 4k, but I seriously doubt you'd be able to tell the difference; everything is very sharp and the 3:2 ratio is more enjoyable to use than a 16:9 ratio screen. Couple that with the thin bezel's on the HP, and you have a very good screen with few major flaws. Sound: This is usually very low on my priority list when buying a laptop. However, the quad speaker setup on this unit produces dramatically better sound than I expected or have experienced with my previous laptops. There is little sign of distortion that plagues smaller, cheap speakers typically found in portable computers. Music sounds surprisingly rich and has very good depth. This certainly won't replace my home speaker system, but if you're going to rely on this for video/music while traveling, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Usability: Windows feels extremely snappy. The OLED screen is only 60hz, but due to responsiveness found in OLED tech, scrolling feels smoother and faster than the 60hz limit suggests (a higher refresh rate would still be a nice future upgrade for the product line). The fingerprint reader works great (I have yet to create a hello windows facial login, but I don't doubt the front camera's functionality). Haven't noticed many glaring issues between the hardware and windows so far. Some of the tech HP advertises, such as "in bag detection," haven't been relevant to my use yet, so I can't say how well some of that works. Battery/Heat: As you can imagine, a bright OLED high resolution screen, coupled with a more compact form factor, are going to leave battery life much to be desired. I would say it's okay at best. I'm not going to put exact times on it, but I'd say with average use at 50% brightness I've gotten maybe 5-7 hours? If battery life is a deal breaker for you, this is not the computer to buy, no matter how nice everything else about it is. It seems to take at worst about 2 hours to fully charge from low battery. The fans don't turn on as much as I thought they would. When they run they remain fairly quiet; rarely has the system spun them to the point of being obtrusive. The bottom of the laptop runs fairly warm, but still fine to keep on your lap without burning your pants. Verdict: Based on my experience with last year's Spectre line, I feel that HP has taken serious consideration when reviewing and improving their laptops year-to-year. This 2020 14" Spectre is a great example of what a premium 2-in-1 should look like. On multiple aspects, this PC has been a joy to use. Aside from battery life, I find it difficult make many major complaints that would warrant looking at a different premium laptop. This being said, I've only used this computer about a week. We shall see how well this unit holds up in the months to come. But if things remain as they are now, HP has certainly built a refined 2-in-1 worthy of a look.

What I like the most is the aspect ratio of the screen. It's great for browsing and reading. The Keyboard is one of the smoothest to type with out of laptops that I've used. I would buy again!
