Premium notebook with cheap sounding speakers

This is a classy premium look and feel notebook. The display is gorgeous. The notebook was almost perfect except for the fact that the speakers are very subpar in comparison to everything else about it. I purchased this as an "open box" item and unfortunately it had considerable battery wear which is why I wasn't able to keep it.

This laptop was my third attempt the last few months to replace my Dell XPS 13 I've had for almost 3 years now. Same specs, 16 GB RAM, i7, terabyte SSD... But I had tried the 15" version of this with the discrete graphics, and it caused too many issues with my docking station at work, so I thought I'd try this one, as it's closer to the Dell I had, no discrete card to cause issues with extending monitors.
The laptop itself is outstanding. I've had two previous models of HP Spectre X360s and loved them. This one was no different. The machining and build quality are excellent. About the best of any laptop I've had. Solid, no flex when picking up with one hand on one front corner.
Keyboard is good, not as good as the Microsoft Surfacebook 3 I tried, but better than most. And the taller screen ratio meant a taller trackpad here compared to the 15" model, another bonus.
The OLED screen is gorgeous, love the clarity, crispness, and the contrast. Since I recently switched my TV to an OLED, I've been loving the difference, and the laptop was a similar experience.
I have had some issues with copying large files (15 or more GB) between SSD external drives and the local drive, where things slow down considerably, but apparently that's something that many people have experienced with the Optane memory. There are ways to disable it, but I didn't bother since it didn't have to happen enough to be an issue.
Sound is good, quite a bit better than the Dell this was to replace.
Love that it included a pen, and the pen also worked very well. I liked the USB charge feature and how the port is hidden with the sliding cover.
Performance and touch screen also had no issues with. Folding it over and using it as a tablet was easier with this size than the wider aspect ratio 15" 2020 Spectre X360.
But I have a multiple monitor layout at work, and the docking station I was using was a problem. The Wavlink just kept dying and having to be powered off and on again, and I'd lose my multi monitors while that happened, and have to move all the programs back to the external monitors all the time. But while I thought that was a problem with the dock, after I moved that to my son's chromebook and got my Dell WD15 dock back on my office desk, he had no issues, and I still have some issue with the dock. So I'm thinking this just isn't working as well with any of the docking stations I've tried so far. Even now, it's extending the monitors finally but won't use the network card.
So USB C docks were problematic, Thunderbolt 3 docks (the Belkin I just tried) were problematic.
Ultimately it's more important that I can work effectively without wasting 30 minutes getting external monitors to work again several times a day than it is to have an OLED screen, so I am boxing it up and returning it...

Not Your Average Consumers Beware

I don't consider myself to be an average consumer, so take my review and apply it to your use case. What I didn't like about the HP Spectre had mostly to do with what could be some quality control issues, but also just poor quality components.
First, the display. It's not the best. In fact, I could clearly see the pixel grid (the little vertical lines and squares in the screen) and it was distracting. To make sure that I wasn't over scrutinizing I compared it to other laptops in its class and they didn't have this issue. I'm not inclined to believe this is a defect, because a visible pixel grid is more indication of a poor quality panel and isn't something that's fixed on the assembly line without changing out the display itself to a higher quality one. To be fair, though, most people will not notice this and they will say this display is amazing because it's high resolution. As a graphic designer who often works with images and files while zoomed in, my eyes are a bit more sensitive to details than most. I notice it, but your mileage may vary.
Next, the build quality. It's OK, but not fantastic. The chassis creaks as you hold it. In other words, it flexes and feels hollow. The colors are nice and not as extreme looking as some photos make it out to be. There's a lot of backlight bleed under the keyboard keys. It's distracting, especially at night and continues to make the laptop feel cheap and unrefined. The size of the laptop itself, though, is pretty excellent.
Performance wise, it runs well. I'd recommend a clean install of Windows, though, as HP's software mucks up the experience. They have a lot of bloatware and it's always trying to run randomly. The fans also kick on even under light workloads.
Overall, I'm not impressed and I returned it. Most people I imagine will not find any fault with my cons. Most of what I mentioned are things that are pretty commonplace for most Windows laptops and consumers have just sort of accepted this poor quality as acceptable. But, it shouldn't be and not all manufacturer's build this way.

This is a great compact laptop. Its got a great screen on it, better than another laptop I looked at. Its super light weight and is fast enough for picture editing. The pin, that comes with it, is fast responding. Only thing that I dont like is it only has one standard USB, so if ur using a mouse there is no other ports to use for like flash drives, it also does not come with a SD card reader built in. It does have an extra USB c port.

It has a solid premium feel to it and the build quality is outstanding. You will have to take care of it as its a magnet for scratches. The keyboard feels very nice, touch screen is amazing, performance is great! I did not get the 4K version but still the screen looked superb. HPs are notorious for breaking apart quickly, hopefully this one gives me some mileage!

Great Device but lacks stamina...

Wish I could give this a 4.25. Almost everything about this laptop is phenomenal.
Pros:
The keyboard is very nice and quiet with nice key travel. It is actually very pleasant to type on. The track pad is huge. It is accurate and finger swipes glide quite nicely over it. The screen is probably the best part of the device. It is very bright when indoors, and sufficiently so when outside, though the glare on the screen will be an obstacle. Web pages, video and photos look brilliant and crisp.
Cons:
The speakers are very average, but I knew that going in. Do not expect them to fill up a room. The worst part of the device is the battery life. HP says about 7-8 hours....but I do not know what planet they got those numbers from. Browsing the web and typing documents give me a little over 4 hours. Video or Zoom calls? I'm lucky to get more than 2 hours.
For the money, I was very disappointed with the battery life, but using the machine was such a great experience. The discount received for the specs (i7, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB HD) helped me decide to stick with it.

A beautiful, powerful, functional laptop that might just be the best you can buy, period. I was upset at first about the battery life, but after a little research you realize that it's the gorgeous OLED screen that draws a lot of power; ease up on white backgrounds (like those when shopping on Amazon or many Web pages) and, if necessary, turn down the screen brightness and use Better Battery mode when you're not needing full power. It's not 10 hours, but I can get 8. Movies and photos are glorious because of that OLED screen. The B&O speaker system is first-class for a laptop. The touch screen is a blast and I use it more than I thought I would. This machine has the right mix of ports and the 1TB solid-state drive is speedy and holds everything. I am very pleased with this purchase!

I already have the Spectre 15” bought 2018 and I was very impressed with its features and looks. Now this time, I purchased this for my 14yr old. I told him this is his Laptop all the way to high school and hopefully lasts him until college, and hoping everything he’ll ever need as far as functionality of the best laptop in the market is concerned is already in his 13” Spectre. Battery longevity, storage capacity, graphics, systems memory., processing speed, WiFi connectivity, portability, 2-1 practicality with the included pen,and carry sleeve... all in.
I compared the different brands’ processing speed and the most I’ve seen was a 2.4 GHz, while mostly all were at 1.8 GHz... but this Spectre blew me away with its 4.7 GHz processing speed. I don’t think my older Spectre came close to this.
And it’s speakers and audio is from Bang& Olufsen, pretty awesome too for a laptop.

This is a wonderful laptop and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. I took advantage of Best Buy's generous return policy during the holidays and had purchased and returned a couple of laptops for various reasons before finally choosing this HP. I had never owned a laptop with this screen aspect ratio and it didn't take but a few minutes for me to see the benefits of a 16:10 vs a 16:9 while surfing the web and looking at documents and paperwork. It took a moment to get used to the black bars on the screen while watching movies and its a non-issue for me. I don't watch a lot of movies on my laptop anyhow. As advertised, the screen is absolutely fantastic and in my opinion, has more than adequate brightness. One of the laptops I had purchased prior to this laptop was the Dell 7306 2n1 with a 4K screen. Its almost apples to oranges in comparing how much better the screen is on this HP vs the Dell. The Dell brightness is listed at 300 nits and I don't feel that is accurate. It was very dim to me. This is a very tough, well-built laptop. Twice, I have fallen asleep in bed using my laptop only to awaken and find the laptop lying on the ceramic tile floor and I was freaking out, expecting the worse. The first drop dented the corner and the second drop didn't show any effect at all. The hinges are still perfectly aligned and it didn't crack the screen or cause any performance issues. The BB spec sheet states the RAM speed is 3200 Mhz and a HP rep answered a RAM speed question stating the speed is 3200 Mhz. According to Task Manager on my HP, the stated speed is actually 3733Mhz and the HP spec sheet under the "From the Manufacturer" tab also lists the speed as 3733Mhz. Setup was very easy and its a very fast laptop and I love the 1 TB SSD. This laptop lives up to its EVO billing in every parameter and I have thoroughly enjoyed this laptop. I wanted to give it a 5 star rating but the issues with the HP tilt pen stop it from me giving it 5 stars and I have to go with 4 but 4.5 is more accurate. The pen is supposed to come with a USB-c cable to charge the pen. Mine did not. The directions were very specific and states that if a USB-c cable wasn't available, the AC adapter charger that is used to power the laptop could be used. Well, I did that and it fried the pen. I called customer service and they told me that I shouldn't have used the AC adapter charger. They promptly sent me a new pen, with the USB-c cable. That cable was so puny and literally less than 3 inches long and it would not charge the pen. I finally had to use the cable from my Fire tablet to charge the pen and it does a great job. Once I got the charging situation handled, the pen works fantastic and I use it way more than I ever thought that I would. The pen attaches via magnets to the left side of the keyboard and the decision to place the pen in that manner almost feels like an afterthought. It comes off in my computer bag all the time. The pen is also black and its easy to overlook and forget that you've attached the pen to the side and when you go to grab your laptop on the left side, the pen comes off very easily at this point and could cause someone to easily drop the computer. Do that a couple times and you will remember the pen is there. Dell and Lenovo did a much better job with garaging and charging their pens. I eventually got used to the magnets are its certainly better than storage solution at all. I would make this purchase 10 out of 10 times.

This HP Spectre x360 14 inch is the best laptop I have ever bought!
They definitely made significant upgrades to this Spectre x360-14 over the 13 inch version. The 3:2 taller screen makes this much more usable when working and reading documents in tablet portrait mode.
I like how they re-positioned the power button from the rear left corner. My HP Spectre x360-13 (2019) had the power button there and I was always accidentally bumping it when picking the laptop up.
Also, they made upgrades to the laptop sleeve pen holder. The one from the 2019 x360-13 had a sleeve for the pen, but it was too long and would often get the pen stuck. This was fixed for the 2020 Spectre-14.
Pro's:
3:2 OLED screen looks great, colors are sharp
Boots very quickly (5-6 seconds) to login screen
Comes with active pen that is rechargeable via USB-C.
Still comes with USB-A Port!
Keyboard spring rate is solid and has good feedback.
Cons:
A bit pricey when fully loaded.
Smallish Battery (still get 6-8 hours of solid use, but nothing compared to the Dell Latitude 9510's 12+)
No 4G/5G LTE support on this particular model.

Great Laptop but Missing an HDMI port

First of all, I love this laptop and really wanted to rated it as excellent. In fact, while an expensive desktop computer I purchased only a few months prior will not support Windows 11, the laptop does. it is fast, all of the applications I have work great on it. What more could I ask for. Unfortunately, this laptop lacks an HDMI port and an Ethernet port. The BestBuy saleman I purchased it from could have sold me an HP Spectre x360 with the larger screen - it had those ports - but recommended that I could just get an adapter for the HDMI, since this model was on a great sale and the adapter should have provided the HDMI for little money. The problem is that the laptop/adapter setup did not work when I wanted to use a projector for a lecture. I then did some research on other adapters and find that all the adapters I could find specifically were not listed as compatible with the HP Spectre. So I am not sure where to go from here. If you don't require an HDMI port, this is an excellent model.

Love the size, weight, touch screen, SSD and battery life. Graphics performance not the best for gaming and I had to reduce quality settings to keep from freezing up, crashing etc. Wish I had known this in advance and understand there are versions of the 15" Spectre x360 that don't have this limitation.

This 2-in-1 is ideally suited for my needs. I'm coming from a Surface Pro 4, which was getting a little long in the tooth. I needed a device that I can use to edit video, use as a Digital Audio Workstation for recording music, and also function in my day to day work. I frequently write notes in OneNote with the pen.
The power, portability, and flexibility of the Spectre 13.5" is unmatched. This 11th gen i7, coupled with 16gb ram and a 1tb SSD can handle everything I throw at it with ease. The new 13.5" 3/2 screen adds quite a bit of screen real estate while staying lightweight and portable. I can fold it over and walk around the room while writing on it. Very versatile.
It took some fiddling to get the power management and color management tools set to my liking, but once I got there, I'm quite happy with the result. Nice addition HP! They really did all the little things right to make this feel like the high end device it is.
I cannot really judge battery life at this point; I'm spending hours a day on Zoom and Google Meet video calls, and that kills any battery in a hurry.
My only quibble is that the tilt pen does not feel quite as good as the Microsoft Surface pen. The Surface Pen's rubbery tip adds some nice resistance as you write, whereas HP's tilt pen is plastic and slippery. I'm able to use the Surface pen on this device, so that's not a problem for me. I have been using the HP pen as well, and it's definitely accurate and responsible. Just not a fan of the feel.

No wonder why this computer is the "Flagship" of the HP line! Super fast and modern tec. with all the extras you can have. The screen is better than most TV's. This laptop is worth every dollar especially with the new 11gen Intel i7evo.
My only negative at first was the nightfall black color with the rose gold. However its grown on me because it is MUCH EASIER TO SEE THE KEYS THAN WITH A SILVER LAPTOP. I had a HP x360 Spectre from 2016 nd it was an issue and they have not fixed that. So I would actually get the nightfall black again.
