This huupe mini is pretty cool. I really didn’t know what to expect when I ordered it. It looked like something my son and grandson would love to do together, and I was completely right. They have a blast. In the box is everything one needs to get started except an internet connection. You get the huupe mini, remote control with batteries, the hoop and net, the door brackets, a ball and an air pump. You also get the screws, wrench and screwdriver to put it together. How cool is that? The charger and a usb cord are also included. Setup took no time flat. It was on the wall and set up in less than 3 minutes. The huupe runs on an Android operating system, and you can download apps on it too. It comes with preinstalled apps like the challenge app, the royal Hoop app and several streaming television apps too. The speakers are good on this and I could clearly hear everything that was being said. The screen clarity was awesome. Everything was clear and brights were bright and darks were dark. I have no complaints about the screen at all. It took my son and my grandson throwing the ball at it pretty hard at times. The games and multiplayer games were fun. My son made some friends and will be playing it more than my grandson I’m sure. Nonetheless, this will get a lot of use.

    Unrealized Potential

On paper the Huupe Mini (Mini) looks to bridge the world of mini hoops with that of interactive video games. It might, but not convincingly. It could be me though. I’m an aging Gen X’er who’s came of age with the OG Intellivision, and I’ve owned many major consoles since then. I’ve also witnessed the tech transformation of the arcade from a room of mechanical games like pinball, skeeball, and, yes hoops, to the current set up at places like Dave and Busters. I’ve seen a lot of tech pass through, and I think I have a feeling when product is “phoned in.” That’s the vibe I get with the Huupe Mini. But, yes, I could just be jaded at this point of my life having “seen it all.” When I first read about the Mini I was super excited. So much potential in an Android powered digital backboard with the latest sensors. I was dying to give this 2025 arcade version of mini basketball a try. Sadly, after using it, I feel Huupe dropped the ball. The software execution and variety of games or challenges is lackluster at best. Hopefully software updates will eventually show it’s potential, but right now in mid-2025 it’s a lot of missed buckets. I’ll get into the hardware and installation in later sections, by I want to expand on my use experience and thoughts on (recurring) playability first because I think that, not hardware or installation, dominates whether it’s something they might enjoy. USE & THOUGHTS The Mini has so much potential, despite some technical flaws, so my disappointment is chiefly in the quality and quantity of the basketball apps, something easily fixed by Huupe. I love the concept, just, as noted, not its execution. What I was hoping for was some kind of mashup between physical arcade-style hoops and video game antics in the old NBA Jam. In short, something that spices up mini hoops. A real hoop and ball, an AI TV announcer calling the shots and sending out dire warnings to beat the shot clock or buzzer plus everything possible with Android OS. Instead Huupe delivers three tired games/apps with the Mini (only two of which are no additional cost to play) that do nothing to exploit the Mini’s capabilities or make it stand out. I’ll give you a quick tour. First up is the “Just Huupe” app. As its name implies it’s just a digital backboard and time elapsed clock. You shoot buckets at your leisure and the Mini’s will tally them and sort into 1, 2, or 3 pointers based on the distance from which you threw the bucket. With all the tech 2025 offers it feels dated. An emotionless, robotic sounding voice curtly confirms if miss or make a shot. I fondly recall the NBA Jam video game’s announcer yelling Boomshakalka! and Man on Fire! That kind of excitement should be here, in its own unique form, of course. Rather, on the Mini if you hit consecutive shots all you get is a worn-out short and silent animation of fireballs like that’s the best Mini’s processor can handle. But also, I’d like the option for some sarcastic ribbing when shots are missed and maybe some crowd noise to make it feel like a video game. Stuff to make the Mini unique. The next game is an online one-on-one shoot out with other Mini owners. It randomly pairs players, but you can invite friends that own a Mini too. This game is a step up from “Just Huupe” because it offers a soundtrack and slightly better graphics. For example, if you shoot a brick a bunch of bricks appear on the backboard. Ultimately though it’s just a souped-up version of “Just Huupe”. But when I’m playing I don’t even realize I’m playing vs. someone else, and really don’t care since I don’t know them and can’t give them grief when they lose – or take it if I do. The final game is one I didn’t play because it requires a subscription even with the daily free-to-play option. The daily winner gets prize money, but that’s not something that interests me even a little bit. And, of course, if you are buying this for kids, that’s the last thing you want, especially with no way (that I’ve found) to remove or “hide” the app. I’m a bit insulted this kind of app in included with so much missing from the Mini. It feels like a cash grab because the included apps play like after thoughts. There is no app store, and I don’t know what Huupe’s plans are for additional software, but the Mini is begging for it, or at least an update to “Just Huupe” to make it user modifiable. After playing the included apps one of the first things I wonder was why isn’t there a game like HORSE where the app tells the player to hit a specifical point value shot to get a letter? There are so many basic things like this that should be here. A few other things come to mind. There is no specific game timer – say you want to set a quarters of a specific time. There’s also no shot clock or, of course, buzzer either. None of the element of basketball are here except the hoop itself. But also, its oddly designed for solo play. Obviously multiple people can share a ball, but unlike a video game, you can’t buy another Huupe Mini ball to use for Player# 2. What a huge miss there. Certainly the balls could be registered by one of the sensors or Bluetooth so the Mini knew who was shooting. After all, only the Huupe Mini ball can be used because of the sensors. I could go on with my nit-picks, but there’s limited write space here and I think I’ve made my point, so I’ll move on. Suffice to say, in short, the Mini, as it is now, is basically straight put the ball in the hoop, just with a fancy monitor backboard. While it has the chops to be innovative it’s not yet. I don’t really feel the steep premium over other Mini hoops sets is warranted at this point in the Mini’s existence. THE HARDWARE The “backboard” is a 19” 1080p LED Android “smart” monitor. It appears to be an IPS panel as it offers good visibility at any angle – something important when shooting hoops. It’s plenty bright too in a lit room with acceptable color. The speakers on the other hand are weak and tinny. Fortunately, you can pair Bluetooth speakers to the Mini if you want a boost in audio quality. A HDMI port on the inside bottom panel offers connectivity to an external device. Additionally, there is a USB-C port used to charge the Huupe, which has its own internal battery. If the battery dies while playing the Mini does work while charging too. Finally, there is a manual power button, but most of the time you’ll probably use the included remote control. The back has a 200x200 VESA layout if you want to attach to an optional wall mount instead of the included door hangers. The all steel (I think) rim is 10” diameter and really feels solid overbuilt. It’s hinged, i.e., break away so theoretically you could gently dunk it without doing damage, but the instructions specifically warn against hanging on it. Also included is a Huupe mini basketball and air pump. While the mini basketball looks like any other mini basketball Huupe advises only the Huupe ball will accurately keep score. So, you’ll want to keep it away from the dog. Huupe sells replacements if needed. ASSEMBLY Installation is a simple as securing the door hangers to the backboard with four mounting screws and then attaching the rim. The rim attaches to the backboard by tightening nuts to pre-attached bolts on the backboard. The Mini is now ready to hang on the door. All the tools needed are included. The doors in my townhouse are just 23” wide and there is just enough clearance to accommodate the Mini. Also, and this is not Huupe’s fault, but my doors don’t have much spacing between the top and the door frame. As a result, it’s tight fit and my door doesn’t close smoothly. So, if you’ll be mounting on a door check it to make sure you have the minimum clearance. Also, my door is about 80” tall which sits the Mini’s rim at just 5’7” off the floor. That seems low for an adult but it’s perfect height for kids. If you are buying this for teens or older you may want to consider mounting on a wall. SETUP & SOFTWARE Registration is required before playing and you will need an Internet connection. However, it’s less intrusive than other devices and “anonymous” registration with just a screen name is allowed. Huupe requests a credit card for their daily tournament, but this is not required, and the screen can be skipped. The screen interface is basic but intuitive. Unfortunately, customizations like reordering the apps or using a personal background photo or graphic isn’t available. Other than the aforementioned game apps, there’s a handful of streaming channel apps. Any of the streaming channels or video from the HDMI port can be overlayed on the backboard while playing. A push of the basketball icon on the remote toggles between video and static background. This works well and the video does not obscure the backboard markings. While the dozen or so TV streaming apps is a nice extra, the reason for buying, or not buying, the Mini is the three basketball game apps. And I’m sure many parents don’t want their kids watching TV while playing and the reason they are considering the Mini is to get the kids away from the TV screen. So, it’s a double edge sword. Other than this, the menu system has an option to connect with friends that also have a Mini and to go to the Huupe shop, though the shop isn’t an app store, but rather a portal to buy Huupe’s H-bucks for its daily tournament. There is also a settings app which, unfortunately, doesn’t allow too much to be changed.

I received the Huupe Mini from Best Buy to try out, and it’s been a surprisingly fun addition to my office. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but it definitely adds a playful vibe to the workday. Installing it was super easy. It fit right over my office door and felt secure without any complicated setup. Charging only took about an hour. The games built into the Huupe are great for quick breaks between meetings or calls. The auto-scoring feature is actually cooler than I expected, it tracked my shots making it more fun to shoot from different spots around the room. I also tried out the streaming apps. While it’s a neat idea to have shows or games playing in the background, the screen resolution and viewing angles aren’t the best for actual watching. It’s more of a bonus feature than a core use case, at least for me. Overall, it’s a fun product that makes the office feel a little less serious. Not essential, but definitely enjoyable and my kids loved it! They loved coming to visit and playing on their own.

Where do I start…so many amazing things to say about the Huupe Mini! I love that it fits just perfectly over our door in our game room. The set up was easy and quick. It has a sleek and compact design making it a perfect addition without overpowering any space. My kids are having a blast playing and I am loving that it gets them up and active and off their iPads and phones! Great for group hang outs and the shot accuracy is impressive (or so my teenage son tells me.) Mini Huupe is a great way to enjoy some family fun and can fit almost anywhere!

Perfect gift for our 13 yr old son! I read a lot of the reviews & was a little worried because it was a newer product out there. All the reviews were great but I still wondered if we were just buying an expensive mini hoop with a tablet on it? It ended up being our son’s favorite gift and we all play on it together. It’s super cool to have a football game etc playing on the screen (can login to Hulu live, Netflix etc) and then there is an overlay on the screen that is still counting your shots. My kids come upstairs sweating afterwards so they are getting in a workout even during the winter inside. When we first set it up, ours did not count the shots so I knew something was off. I emailed the company, they responded right away and after a brief test they asked me to do, they immediately agreed to send us another one directly. We sent the defective unit back to them and it was super easy. Customer service was 10/10.

I recently bought the Huupe Mini and I’ve really been enjoying it. The design is sleek, it fits great in smaller spaces, and the interactive features make it more fun than a regular mini hoop. Customer service was also great — they were quick to respond and very helpful when I had a question. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it.

    Greatest Gift

My in-laws wrapped up a Huupe for our son this Holiday. Candidly, i figured a 3 year old would be more excited about the box than the product. (On that note, the packing is remarkable, Apple-esque, even). I was wrong. The only time our son has left the basement to take a Huupe break is for food, water, and the occasional nap. The games are fun, interactive, and sweat-inducing. The small product details are remarkable: a real rim, a ball with a realistic texture, the crisp swish of the net. I can’t recommend this product enough for anyone with a competitive streak or who simply wants a parenting break.

Best Christmas Gift We Bought This Year

We bought the Huupe for our son Jack as a Christmas gift, and it’s been a total home run. It’s been hanging on our front door ever since, and he plays with it multiple times a day. I can literally hear him using it as I write this review. What really stood out, beyond how much Jack loves it, was the customer support. Our original Huupe had a few issues, and their team was fantastic. Fast responses, genuinely helpful, and they made it right without any hassle. That kind of support matters, especially with a premium product. If you’re on the fence, I’ll say this. It gets used constantly, it keeps him active, and it’s one of those rare gifts that doesn’t lose its shine after the first week. Worth every penny.
