I really love this keyboard cuz of the RGB and knob [since Keychron RGB is trash], but after my 3rd round of swapping switches on it, the D key already died. How is my character supposed to move right in games now? I tested it on another computer and used spare switches, which confirmed it’s dead. Also the switches are very hard to put in and take out compared to other brand keyboards. I bent over 4 switches trying to put them in. Returning this garbage.

A Reasonably Priced Customizable Keyboard

Nice job HyperX. HP bought HyperX back in 2021 and it seems that they have stepped up their game quite a bit. HyperX has a slew of computer peripherals focused primarily on gaming. I have had great results from a HyperX keyboard and mouse in the past but in most cases it was a mixed bag of me too. However, since the HP purchase it seems that there has been more innovation.
I'm truly impressed with the Alloy Rise keyboard. It checks all of my boxes for sure but there are a few gimmicks that I'll mention later that I don't feel add to the experience.
Firstly, a full keyboard with number keypad is great for my day to day needs. I do a lot of number crunching so the numpad is very welcome and is ditched, for the most part, for the traditional gaming (and especially reduced size) they tend to be TKL. So big plus for me!
Secondly, hot swappable key switches!!!! Keyboard customization is becoming more and more available but usually on more expensive keyboards. I paid over $350 for another brand's custom kit (base, key switches, key caps, and coiled braided cord). Crazy talk! I've got a couple of others since and bought components separately. The beauty of hot-swap key switches is if you don't like the supplied HyperX linear switches you can purchase just about anybody's switches and there are many (almost skittle color variety) each color indicates the key action. Some more soft, some more clicky, some more firm or less clicky. Truly customizable depending on how you like to type. Heck you can even mix and match using something more soft for gaming and some keys more clicky while typing. HyperX offers a couple of switch packs but don't feel like you are locked in and at $25 for a pack of 45 pre-lubed switches which is comparable to other brands. Additionally the key caps are pretty much standard and there are multitudes of colors, styles, themes, etc. Truly this keyboard may open up a Pandora's box of customizing. Even the cord provided, while pretty standard USB C to USB A braided cable, if you prefer a coiled cable they are out there in a lot of colors as well. A key cap and key switch extractor is included with the keyboard just taunting you to dive into customization.
Thirdly, I must have media controls on my keyboards, well, at least volume control and the Alloy Rise checks that box with a volume knob, play/pause, forward, reverse buttons. Check!!!
I also love that the keyboard also has ambient sensing lighting which brightens in bright light and reduces in low light. Check!!!!
The RGB lighting is easily controlled with the NGENUITY software. Not only does the software allow you to set lighting themes you can also create macros and save up to 10 custom profiles.
While only available in black you can purchase the optional top plate in white or navy blue but remember that you will still have black keys unless you purchase the before mentioned aftermarket key caps. The options are endless. Heck I'm thinking of picking up a couple of the white top plates and might get them cerakoted to create a theme of my favorite games. The swappable top plate may be considered a gimmick but it allows HyperX to provide an option. Top plates run $50 each.
Now for the other gimmick that I'm on the fence about. The keyboard comes with a magnetic HyperX badge that mounts on the right side and there are optional badge packs. At $25 I'm not sure I'd spend my money to opt for one of the 3 packs of 4.
The $199.99 price tag might scare some folks off but honestly for a full customizable keyboard this is actually a pretty good deal.

This is a very nice keyboard overall. I’m typing this review on it right now. Out of the box, setup is simple. Attach the included USB cable and plug it in to your computer. The included instruction sheet is quite minimal, with just a diagram of the keyboard showing the various features and a comment to go to the Hyperx website to download the control software. If I have one complaint, it’s that there are no instructions on the website that I could find that explain how to use the software. You’re on your own to click around to see how to set up different color patterns, change keys, and so forth. Not that it can’t be figured out, but a several-page pdf booklet wouldn’t hurt.
As far as what you can do with the software, you can select from a variety of lighting effects (confetti, twilight, wave, just to name a few), you can control “opacity,” which, as far as I can tell, is another word for brightness, for any or all keys, you can, of course, control the background color of the keys, and you can control the “speed” at which the selected effect travels across the keyboard. You can also, of course, reassign any key to any function you’d like. You can save any particular combination of settings as its own “preset” and then set up as many presets as you like. In short, the keyboard is almost infinitely customizable, and, if you’re not careful, you might never actually get around to using it because you’ll be spending so much time playing with the settings!
The keyboard itself is one of the most solid and hefty I’ve come across. Never drop it on your foot. Keyboard tactile feel is very nice. The feel is not “clicky” in the traditional sense, but is more a solid tap-tap, which is hard to describe. It is quieter than typical clicky keyboards.
Two other features I’ve not seen in a keyboard before are a completely removable top plate. The included plate, made of metal, is black in color and hefty. Plates in other colors are available from the manufacturer. Also removable and replaceable on the keyboard’s right side is a small metal badge with the Hyperx logo on it. Other styles for this are available as well. I'm not sure how much time you spend looking at the side of a keyboard, but there it is.
A third feature I’ve grown very quickly to like that I have also not seen on any recent keyboard I’ve used is a set of media control buttons and a volume-control knob (yes, an actual knob—I love it!) in the upper right corner. I’m so used to having to use my mouse to move a slider or click on or press volume-up and volume-down buttons that having an actual analog-style, 20th-century knob to turn is a real pleasure. I use it all the time.
Yet a fourth new feature is the inclusion in the box of a tool for pulling keycaps and keyswitches should you want to change either of them. I’ve changed these before on keyboards, and it’s usually not difficult because keycaps and switches are often made to be changed out, but it’s nice to have a tool specifically designed for the job by the keyboard’s manufacturer.
As I said at the top, overall, this is a very fine keyboard. I look forward to getting much use out of it for both gaming and just for everyday computer use.

Great keyboard

So far this is my favorite keyboard to use. I love how it feels, how it looks, and most important, how it reacts. Right out of the box, it was plug and play and the media keys and volume knob worked great. I just upgraded my desk so I have more room now and can have a full-size keyboard. This keyboard has a gaming mode that deactivates some key presses that you might accidently hit such as alt-F4 or alt-tab etc. Great especially if you are a streamer so you don't accidently press these.
I enjoy RGB lighting myself and like that this also has the lighting on the sides underneath. One reason for me is because you can turn it off if you don't like it or you can change it to your liking. If you enjoy a certain color, you can change it to a color or multiple colors.
There are a couple things that I would like to have seen. Like I mentioned above with having a gaming mode, I would have liked to maybe have seen more keys to turn off. Like the windows key or an option to maybe add some key combinations. f
This keyboard comes with a magnetic plate as well as a magnetic side badge that you can replace. Great idea but I would have liked to have seen it come with a couple options to have and then options to buy more later. Like a black and white top plate. Then options to buy other colors later. Also, actually having more colors to get. I know this will probably come in time but right now you can only get white or blue. Maybe all 3 should have come with it. The side badge same thing. It comes with 1 but would be nice to just see a couple. They do have a couple packs you can get that look fun and I would imagine more options on the way. I hope they come out with a way to maybe get some custom made.
This has hot-swappable keys with standard 5-pin key switches. This allows you to swap out to a different key switch. This comes with Linear and if you prefer tactile instead, you can swap out to that style, but you would have to purchase them as this only comes with Linear.
I would have also liked to see more FN keys as well as those keys to also be lit with RGB so you can see them. The keyboard only has 5, game mode one, one that changes the LED, ambient light and keyboard light up and down. Would be nice to maybe also have ones that change the profile.
But overall, I am satisfied and love this keyboard. Packing, it came in a soft bag that I used to put my min keyboard in to store.
If you are looking for a great full-size keyboard, this fits that description and will not disappoint.

Heavy Duty Gaming Keyboard Built Like A Tank

The first thing I noticed about the HyperX Allow Rise was that it had some weight to it. The bottom of the case/frame of the keyboard is made of hard plastic and the upper part is aluminum. It's well made. The keys have a light texture to them which reduces the chance of your fingers slipping off while gaming. The keys also light up. You can change the light profile through the Ngenuity app which you can download from their website. In the app you can setup multiple profiles. There is a function key I can use in conjunction with a couple of other keys one of which allowed me to change the profile without having to do so through the Ngenuity app. One of the other keys used in conjunction with the function key will disable the windows key so that if I accidentally press it during a gaming session, it doesn't open the Windows start menu. I was able to also use two additional keys with the function key to increase or decrease the intensity of the keyboard's light. The keys are mechanical which I could feel instantly at first use. I found the feel to be good and also to be responsive when playing a first person shooter. It also has media controls for forward, back, play/pause, and a volume knob. Out of the media controls I use the volume knob the most. I like the feel and placement of it. It's easy for me to find it without having to look down at the keyboard. It comes with a well made USB-C to USB-A cable to connect the keyboard to a computer. It's flexible and has a wrap to help with durability. The other item with the keyboard is a key and switch puller. I doubt I will ever have to use it, but I have it anyway in case I do.
I'm very happy with the keyboard and expect to get many years of use out of it. I like that I can set a color and pattern to the keys and can quickly switch through light patterns that I have setup. I also really like the weight. At no point during gaming did I have it shift on my which does happen with lighter keyboards. I like what HyperX has done with the Alloy Rise and hope they keep this quality and design going forward.

I had been using a competitors gaming keyboard that I purchased 10 or so years ago when building my gaming system that included a 980Ti and then I had upgraded that system about 4-5 years ago but I kept using the same keyboard because I had grown to absolutely love it. However, it was becoming time to give something else a go because that keyboards customization software was becoming excessively bloated and even with my I9 13900K and 64GB of RAM and 7900 XTX I was getting well tired of that competitor's solution.
The HyperX Alloy is a full-size mechanical keyboard and the full-size mechanical is a must for me. I don't know how others can game on a compact keyboard, it just doesn't feel natural to me and also I can't work from those compact keyboards. The first thing I do when getting a work laptop is hook it up to my USB-C docking station and use my full-size external keyboard. So this keyboard absolutely fit the bill & is awesome.
I'll be purchasing some different top plate & side badges for the keyboard in order to more customize it to my style but out of the box I really like it. The software is smooth & it's resource usage was much less than the competitor's software solution, I hope HyperX continues with that trend. When gaming every bit of resources going to something other than the game is taking away from the game's available resources and therefore slowing things down.
Would I recommend this product to a friend or family member? You betcha. I have already recommended it to both of my sons and we are looking at getting them each one because that's how much I like this keyboard. They have even sat down for a few gaming sessions on my gaming PC and they too like the feel & feedback of the keyboard. Everyone in our household is happy with it after using it!

[PROS]
Simplistic, But With Options: The HyperX Alloy Rise is full size keyboard that doesn't try to get too fancy. It's a standard layout with 4 media control keys (including a volume knob). However, the removable plate is what excited me. Swapping out the plate is a breeze, and stays in place even when moving it around on the desk. I'm excited to change out the colorway to make my device even more unique. The magnetic badge on the side is a nice touch, but I would prefer if I could get a custom designed printed out instead of using a badge from a theme pack.
Great typing experience: The hot-swap is not much to touch on. Swapping out the keyboard switches is simple. I could switch out, but I'm pretty satisfied with the default switches. The keypress feedback is great, and I'm able to smoothly transition to the next keypress comfortably. When gaming, the input of the Alloy Rise is very responsive. I was able to play through sessions without any delays from my input.
Streamlined Software: Taking advantage of all the keyboard features requires installing the HyperX Ngenuity software. As a first time user, I was pretty satisfied with how straightforward it was to use. The program didn't seem bulky or contain an overcrowded interface. From Ngenuity, I was able to customize things such as lighting and keyboard commands with relative ease
Sufficient Lightning: The lightning on this keyboard is good. It's not going to overcome a highly sunlit room, but provides enough color to remain very noticeable.
[CONS]
Lack of dedicated keys: As stated above, the keyboard design is simple. However, I am a fan of having a few dedicated keys for additional actions and commands.
No bottom plate mechanism: It's great that the top plate is removeable, but I would desire to change the entire keyboard color. Having a white cover with a black keyboard bottom could be a bit off-putting.
[CONCLUSION]
I enjoy using the Alloy Rise. It's gaming keyboard that gives you everything you would want: great typing experience, easy-to-use software, and a few custom options. I would have designed a few things differently, but I can't knock the overall experience that I had.

I'm very particular about my keyboards. I can spend ages trying to decide on one that has the right balance of weight, responsiveness, and overall feel, and oftentimes I'm forced to make compromises in at least one area to settle on one that's good enough. As such keyboards offering easily replaceable switches are quite interesting to me. And the Alloy makes a pretty good case overall for itself - but ultimately can't quite escape the compromise again.
First, I'd like to highlight the things I liked. And there are a lot. The textured keycaps, aluminum deck, and bright lighting are all a pleasure to look at and touch. The standard linear switches installed in they keyboard are very smooth and boast a light actuation pressure, making them ideal for gaming. The included key puller also makes quick work of both keycap and switch replacement, which is great for maintenance and cleaning even if you don't plan to swap out the parts.
Unfortunately, the customizability does come with some downsides too. The removable aluminum top plate in particular. Usually this part is what gives a keyboard a lot of its rigidity. Here though, it's only held onto the rest of the frame by magnets. As such it can't do anything to reinforce the frame, resulting in noticeable deck flex which can lead to it shifting around beneath your fingers if you're a fairly heavy typist (and I definitely am.) Honestly this is a baffling decision to me, as I imagine most will only change the plate once to match the rest of their rig and then never touch it again. Using screws instead of magnets would have let the plate properly reinforce the rest of the keyboard without seriously compromising on the promise of customizability.
To be clear I do think that a lot of people, particularly ones who learned not to bash on their keys like they were trying to avenge a beloved mentor who was struck down by carpal tunnel, would be just fine with the keyboard as it is. The amount of flex it displays is far from the worst I've seen. And I also think that the kind of determined DIYer who'd individually swap out keys to match their preferred typing style might be able to find some way to address it with additional reinforcement. But I don't think that's me. And as such, I can only give it a qualified recommendation.

I had a minor issue with the keyboard (One of the keys didn't register with the original switches) and when I contacted them to get it fixed under warranty, they replaced the keyboard after I provided the necessary information. Will definitely be buying from them again!
