Margot Robbie brilliant in this wonderful film

    |
    Posted .

Australian Margot Robbie not only has had a prolific acting career in various media from Australian television soap operas and independent films to American TV dramas and motion pictures (the most important of which was Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”), and as a producer, she has launched her own production company named LuckyChap Entertainment. She has also been involved in commercial endorsements, being the face of Calvin Klein’s “Deep Euphoria” perfume and a BladeGlider driver for Nissan electric vehicles. Her fame has been such that last year Robbie was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. After acting in various films from “Focus”, “The Legend of Tarzan” to “Suicide Squad”, Margot Robbie has finally nabbed her most important role: playing infamous Olympic ice skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie’s iconoclastic biographical comedy, “I, Tonya” -- and she infuses the part with utmost skill and commitment as well as mastery in the art of acting. And the film itself is a near-masterpiece, and one of the most entertaining films of 2017.

    A great biographical comedy

    |
    Posted .

“I, Tonya”, a portrait of infamous Olympic ice skater Tonya Harding, is one of 2017’s most entertaining films. Directed by Craig Gillespie, it is an iconoclastic biographical comedy that is a brilliant mix of mockumentary-style film clips and interviews interspersed with dramatic sequences, figure skating scenes, and humorous moments in which the actors break the fourth wall and talk to the audience. The acting is incredible. Australian Margot Robbie has finally nabbed her most important role playing Harding masterfully, but it might be Allison Janney as Harding’s sadistic, abusive mother LaVona that might be burned into your memory the most. Real-life villains this memorably heartless are rare for seasoned actors to find. I daresay one look at a photo of Janney in the part with her steely crow’s eyes staring through cycloid eyeglasses, oxygen tubes in her nose, short choppy boyish hair, and wearing a seedy old fur with a grumpy parrot perched on her shoulder, and you’ll never forget her. Beautifully scripted as well as directed, the key to the film’s success might be its editing that superbly forms a cohesive biographical portrait allowing us deep into Tonya Harding’s skin, something that might make one pause. Yet while the film is fair in portraying her flaws, it takes no cheap shots, and shows admiration for her tenacity and skill. Don’t miss this.

Well deserved Oscar for Allison Janey. I learned a lot about the case I didn't know. Who knew Tonya loved, Dove Ice Cream Bars.

A hysterical take on a story people might not entirely know. Robbie is great but Janney steals the show. Does drama and comedy very well.

    Simply Hilarious Dark Comedy

I bought this movie against my better judgement because I was bored and was only slightly curious of the content. This turned out to be one of the most hilarious movies I have seen in many years. Really a lot of laughs. Watch it with a six pack of beer and you will not regret your time spent on the foolish life of Superstar Tonya! You may even grow a sympathetic affection and respect for her tragedy in life.

    Awesome Film!

This movie was awesome! I wanted to see it in theater but did not have time. I thought the price for the blu ray at Best Buy was reasonable so I bought it and I am so happy to add it to my collection! Sebastian Stan and Margot Robbie were amazing and having seen “the incident” unfold as a child, I think they did a great job of capturing that tumultuous time in figure skating. I would highly recommend this movie if you like those actors, figure skating, that time period, or wierd romances. This film lived up to the hype.

    A PROVOCATIVE BOMBASTIC DRAMATIC FILM

Electrifying performances showcase this incredibly raw portrait of a totally dysfunctional family and even more abusive marriage that affected the personality and outrageous behavior of Tonya Harding, who otherwise could have been one of the world's greatest figure skaters. A cruel and cold as ice mother and abusive husband played havoc for a young Tonya who never had a chance at any real life. An awesome film and one of the greatest performances by a supporting actress in years.

    Go for the Gold Tech!

This came with two DVDs, I wanted the Blu-Ray version because (as many notice) the BR comes with extras that the others don't have. Especially fascinating was the director's showing the CGI assist, the head modelling of Tonya and creating the crowd on the greenscreen, so smoothly edited I looked at it with surprise, once more! You can't tell you're looking at a CGI EFX instead of a real crowd. Ditto the skating special EFX. Go see yourself!

    Great dark humored tale!

Excellent acting by all performers. This movie has dark humor and hopelessly dis-functional characters. One wonders how they survived long enough to become adults. But the movie does not mock their foolishness. It is a straight forward presentation where the characters speak for themselves. You will laugh at some scenes but feel some compassion for the characters as well. An unusual and entertaining movie that is a good change from a diet of blockbuster action films.

    Best Picture material

I'm not a Tonya Harding fan nor a Nancy Kerrigan fan or even a fan of ice skating in general, but this is one great movie. Think you know the story? Think again. I learned some things and actually gained a little sympathy for Harding, but more importantly, I immensely enjoyed watching this movie 3-4x now since I bought it. It just might be my vote for "Best Picture".

Excellent Movie with Quality Writing & Acting

I must say that I was a little hesitant when I first purchased this movie on dvd. However, it was a very pleasant surprise with some very touching scenes, just the right amount of humor, and compelling acting by quite a few actors in the movie. It was very well written and did not insult your intelligence and kept me interested all throughout the movie.

    #1 film of 2017

I’Tonya is my favorite film of 2017. You can see why are two leading ladies got Oscar nominations. Of course Alison Janney won and earned the award. Margot Robbie was phenomenal to watch. Never a dull moment as the film progresses. Sebastian Stan was also fantastic in it. I honest was expecting Robbie to win! Either way film is a must own! Still a little disappointed Best Buy Didn’t decide to give the film steelbook treatment!

While there is a little bit of a moral conundrum regarding watching a movie that portrays Tonya Harding in such a fashion it is still a very good film and Margot Robbie’s performance is excellent.

    Interesting point of view

The way how the story unfolds and takes on such a dramatic turn of events is well thought out. It gives a hint to any possibilities of what the true story (if we will ever know the truth) could be. All the characters resemble what they looked like on TV which is a very nice touch given to every actor and actress. Nice to watch and nice to share with friends. Not a family movie, obviously
