Shoddy excuse for a fridge: 2 broken in 20 months

    Posted
    nyckabrick

I purchased this refrigerator as my main fridge, which was supposed to be the perfect size for my small home. The size of this refrigerator is awesome and glass shelfs are very nice, but this is the biggest pile of dung refrigerator I've ever encountered. I purchased this fridge in October 2012. It was working well for about 6 months, when it unexpectedly died (March 2013). Apparently the compressor went out with NO warning. 10 cu. ft. of spoiled food. Of course, this had to happen while I was out of the country for work. Disgusting. I then proceeded to talk with Best Buy and they exchange it, but - of course - I have to sit without a refrigerator for >1 week waiting for a "new" refrigerator to get shipped. To make matters worse... I drive a compact car... it's not easy to haul a fridge, so when their product dies, of course I have to find means to transport both the broken fridge and the new one. Lame. But whatever. So this "new" fridge is a lemon. With the original fridge, I never had frost problems or drainage problems but that was the fridge that broke, so when I got the new fridge and I started having frost problems, I thought maybe that was the way this refrigerator was supposed to work. Just an FYI: It's not. So 14 months after I get this "new" fridge, it too dies. And of course, it's when I'm out of state. Yet another round of spoiled food. What's more, its 2 months past manufacturer's warranty, so no exchange and no return. DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. FRIDGE... unless you get geek squad insurance for it. Not only did I pay for a shoddy fridge... now I get to pay the disposal fees associated with buying a shoddy fridge. Worst appliance purchase ever.

Just received my new Igloo 10 cu fridge... The problem is that .... THIS IS MY 3RD IGLOO SINCE DECEMBER 2012... After ordering via the Best Buy website in December, the unit was delivered to my studio apartment. Its slim size and height made it a perfect fit. I was excited. The delivery men plugged the unit in and I adjusted the thermostat and waited. The next day the fridge had the same temperature as when it arrived. I went over the manual to make sure the thermostat settings were what I thought they were. I set the thermostat in the 5 position and went to bed. The following morning, the temperature hadn't changed inside the unit, still warm. I went to work thinking it might just need more time but 10 hours later and still no luck. I called Best Buy and explained that although the motor was running the unit was not at all cooling. Since I just had the unit delivered a few days earlier, there was no problem with them swapping my fridge for a new one. A few days later I had my new fridge and everything was great with that one. 6 months later, I got home from a long weekend getaway and I'm greeted by the smell of rotten food. The fridge had failed and everything inside went bad. After throwing out nearly $100 in groceries, I tried figuring out what was wrong with it. The light inside was on when the unit was plugged in but there was no sound of the motor working. I called the Best Buy 800 number and was told that I would have to bring the unit into my local store for exchange. After explain that I didn't have a vehicle capable of transporting it, I was advised to call the local store and speak to the manager and see if he could arrange it to be picked up. The manager was very helpful and he scheduled the exchange and they would pick it up. The manager told me that I was fortunate because normally exchanging an appliance 6 months after purchase is unheard of, but that the company who makes this unit is still allowing Best Buy to exchange them. What I got from that is that the company who makes them knows that its a piece of junk and has gone out of their way to make sure these troubled units are replaced asap. Since I'm such a baseball fan, I'm giving this fridge one last strike before its out and I move on to something else. Wish me luck.

I got this on sale for only $200. Great deal. Just about any fridge at this price has on of those tiny "freezer" compartments in the same compartment of the refrigerator (when takes forever to freeze even small amounts of ice, but halfway freezes everything else...or lets it get too warm). This one has a separate freezer compartment, and will freeze a good amount of ice (which I take out of the trays and put into a big container)...and still have room for a few full size pizzas, 4 lbs of wings, and some frozen vegetables. It's not a big freezer, but WAY better than anything else in the price range. The refrigerator should have plenty of room for 1 person (easily), or maybe two. It has five shelves, which are all easily adjusted; there are MANY evenly spaces slots that the shelves slide into, so you can adjust any of the shelves only a little higher or lower (or a lot)...very flexible, and simple. Since it's not frost-free (hey, wutch'ya want for $200?), it does get some condensation and ice on the back wall of the fridge area. About once a month, I blow a hair dryer on it for a minute, and I can usually peel off the ice by hand that doesn't fall off right away. Takes about 4 minutes...tops. Note: IF YOU HAUL THIS HOME YOURSELF...TAKE NOTE! If you must tilt the fridge, or put it on it's side, even briefly, WAIT 24 HOURS BEFORE PLUGGING IT IN! The reason: When titled, the oil from the lubrication reservoir leaks into the coolant: If you turn it on right away, the fluids mix together, this really messes up your fridge. If you wait a good 24 hours after standing the fridge back up, all of the oil will be drained back into the reservoir where it belongs (and then everything is fine)Some people say to wait 12 hours before plugging in....but I highly recommend waiting the full 24 hours. This will save you a lot of grief and disappointment. Lastly, this is a nice in-between size unit, which is hard to find. I would have been satisfied if it was $300 (which is about $100 more than I had when I got this.) So, thumbs up all the way!)

This is the perfect apartment size fridge...look no further....Small is the way to go today, especially if you are looking to cut down on your electric bill....It's perfect for a couple, college kids, single person, second fridge.....This is tall, slim and has lots of shelving inside and a veggie and fruit drawer..Comes with an egg accessory to hold your eggs on the door shelves, which you can place anywhere on the door...The shelves are all made of glass, but not the door shelves, its sturdy to hold plenty of food and beverages...The freezer part works fast as soon as you plug it in, has a bottom area for storage and a shelf....The height is as high as the average 5 9' person and the width is half the size of a large fridge...I just love it , it is exactly what I was looking for...I have been looking for a used fridge since I could not afford the average price....When I first saw this Igloo it was at full price...Then I went back after Christmas and it was ON SALE HALF OFF just waiting for me!! ahhhh....The regular price was $400, which I would not pay if I could....Now will list the down side to the fridge.... DOES NOT GET COLD ENOUGH IN THE FRIDGE PART...IF YOU MOVE THE SETTINGS UP THE FRIDGE WALLS WILL FREEZE..THEY TELL YOU TO KEEP IT ON 3 SINCE THATS HOW IT COMES SET...HOWEVER, I NOW HAVE IT ON JUST PASSED 4 BUT WILL NEED TO MOVE IT UP AGAIN.....YOU HAVE TO DEFROST THE FREEZER YOURSELF, I JUST BOUGHT IT AND ALREADY SEE FROST BUILDING-PLUS I LIVE IN FLORIDA SO ITS WORKING HARDER....THE SIZE OF IT IS NOT FOR A FAMILY OF 5 ESPECIALLY IF YOU NEED TO FREEZE THINGS,NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR ALOT OF FOOD IN THE FREEZER.....AND...IF YOU NEED TO STORE ALOT OF FOOD IN THE FRIDGE PART, IT WILL NOT GET COLD ENOUGH...SO THAT IS BAD FOR ANY KIND OF MEATS.....OTHERWISE A GOOD LITTLE FRIDGE TO HAVE....I HOPE IT LASTS.....STAY TUNED....

If I could give this a zero or negative stars I would. It didn't last even three months. First issue the door wouldn't stay closed. After that it would go between not keeping food cold to freezing it making the refrigerator unusable as it would ruin the food inside. The worst part has been dealing with Best Buy in an effort to get the non-working refrigerator replaced. The initial phone call to get it replaced was 2 hours of frustration of long holds and being transferred to departments that either could not help me or didn't know what they were doing. After speaking to someone who could finally set up an exchange somewhere along the line they decided to deliver the exchange to an obsolete address that had not been used in over 2 years in different state than the original product had been delivered. This was in spite of the fact that they confirmed the delivery address to me. I caught this mistake before it was delivered. Even though it was their mistake they didn't do anything to make it right other than say they would deliver the refrigerator to the correct address a week later. After several more phone calls I was able to get it down to three days later. But then I get a phone call saying that it wasn't available for another 3 days. I'm holding my breath that it will actually be delivered then. In the meantime the refrigerator is useless. This part of the process took me over an hour on the phone to get straightened out. BOTTOM LINE YOU WILL NEED TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME DEALING WITH THIS FRUSTRATING COMPANY IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG.

We bought this fridge in January to go in our little guest house. The fridge is the perfect size and worked fine until the end of March. It stopped cooling so I unplugged it, turned the thermostat knob a few times and let it set for a day or so to see if it reset. It did come back on and start cooling again after a couple of days and lasted about another week. That was it though. I contacted customer service (foreign call center, strike one) and they gave me some reset instructions, which I tried, and after another week, still nothing. I called customer service again to begin the RMA process, as apparently the 1-year warranty does not cover in-house service repair. Unfortunately shipping a fridge from central Texas to Illinois costs upwards of $250 (with packing and everything), which I find completely unacceptable. Called customer service back with no further luck. Next stop will be Best Buy, but I'm not holding my breath. So long story short, I would avoid this manufacturer and product. At least it was on sale, but now I have a $270 insulated box.

i purchased this refrigerator in dec. for the apt. i have while it was vacant. it was not in use till march when it the apt. was rented. as of april, the seal around the refrigerator began pulling away from the door. within another month the freezer seal began pulling away. i contacted the manufacturer about their 1 year warranty & they said i had to ship it back to them to have it fixed - which would cost more than buying a new refrigerator and i'm not confident that i wouldn't have the problem again. i contacted best buy customer service and they have never gotten back to me. so now the doors don't seal, it's costing a lot in electricity, it's causing food spoilage for my tenant, and i have to look for another refrigerator that works as advertised. with the seal coming off within a month of use, poor customer service on the part of the manufacturer & lack of customer service on the part of best buy, i would not recommend purchasing this refrigerator.

Got this as a beverage fridge in the garage, as there are no restrictive operating temperature limits in the manual (lots of fridges say do not use in ambient temps below 50, which is worthless for most garages). The tall/skinny form factor is different than most other fridges around this size +/- 10cuft, and to me is much preferable than the short/fat fridges. Storage space is maximized by being mostly rectangular inside, without the odd-shaped protrusions or other obstacles in most other fridges. Door shelves are a bit shallow for taller items (like bottles) but is fine as long as the door isn't yanked open. I've had trouble dialing in the temperature to be cold enough in the fridge without being too cold in the freezer. Ice formed immediately inside the backwall of the fridge and a little frost is growing inside the freezer, but I chalk that up to the hot/humid garage & weather here in the south east. Motor is a bit noisy, which is a non-factor for me in a garage but may be inside a house/apt. The model I inspected in the store was not plugged in. But if you need a very inexpensive fridge to maximize a small space, I would recommend this Igloo.

We bought this refrigerator because we have a small space in our makeshift kitchen in a small apartment. Its slim style fits great. Height is 6'2". Width is just over 21 inches. The doors have nice clear plastic shelving which are adjustable. The glass shelves make it easy to place your food items and see through to next shelves. The lower vegetable bin is a bit narrow, but for two people, it is doable. The freezer freezes well, and after three weeks of use, there is only slight buildup of frost. There is also slight buildup of frost in back of fridge but we had the thermostat up too high and lowering it one degree, helped to resolve this issue. You have to buy your own ice cube trays because the tiny one that comes with it is just a token gesture and laughable. It also does not come with light bulb. We love this fridge, for now it serves a great purpose, as we were using a mini fridge and that did not work for us. We highly recommend it. It is energy saving. We got a great deal at BestBuy! For two people or small family.

You are reading about this fridge because it's a low price, a small size, and energy efficient. I'd turn back if I were you. It's not worth the hassle of dealing with the worst customer service in the world. You'll have to buy geek squad protection if I haven't scared you away yet. Got this fridge for a few beverages. No longer worked after 2 weeks. Tried cleaning it and examining the drain, compressor, cables, etc. Manufacturer wanted me to call them back every other day for a month with no resolution. Came with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. DO NOT BUY BECAUSE IT SAYS IGLOO. This curtis international ltd. company is licensed by Igloo to build the fridge. Has NOTHING to do with Igloo. Should never be for sale in a national chain like best buy. Go back to the search results now and save up for any other fridge but this. Pick a real name brand.

been looking for a small fridge to keep drinks in and free up space in our main fridge. found this on at best buy and thought the price was great. I ordered it and it arrived 2 days later. only problem is that It worked for a day then quit. it froze up the back panel in the fridge and wouldn't keep the drinks cold. I should have read the reviews before I bought it, to many problems with the fridge. I tried to take it back to best buy and told me to call geek squad. after 1 hour on the phone with geek squad they told me it wasnt worth for them to come out to look at it. and that they have had so many problems with this fridge that they didnt recommend sending out another one and that they were coming to pick it up and return all my money. today they picked it up and the driver said he has picked up several of these units and doesnt recommend it either.

Purchased this unit because of the size which was hard to find. Never worked right. The inside of the food compartment iced up on the back wall after 3 days. Called the company and was told to do a few things to rectify the problem which didn't work. Company said to send it back AT MY EXPENSE and they would replace or repair it but would not say if I would get a new unit or a refurbished one. This would take 6 to 8 weeks after they received my unit which would leave my tenant w/out a fridge. Company said to rent a fridge until the I received one back from them. I asked if they would pay for the rental - I'm sure you can guess the answer to that question. All that said, I ended up having to purchase a new fridge - not the same brand - due to the cost of the return shipping and cost of a rental. I in fact saved money by purchasing a new one. The original unit is now at the local dump ! Would not recommend this unit to anyone NO COMPANY SUPPORT>

Bought this igloo for our studio apartment in December. Stopped working last week (May). Best Buy was awesome in getting me a digital copy of the receipt. Called Igloo, they shuttled me to Curtis International - a manufacturer with permission to use Igloo's name. Igloo should revoke that name. Although customer service answers quickly, I got wacky instructions on how to reset the fridge to the factory settings. It had no effect. I called to collect on the 1 year parts and labor warranty, and they want me to pack and ship it to Illinois at my expense with insurance. Well, it's $240 fridge ($300 when not on sale). So the warranty is basically worthless. Don't wast your money. Find a better product. Too bad, as it fills a niche in the market, but it's not worth it.

Slim and quiet, but defrosts the old-fashioned way

This refrigerator was one of a precious few that was small enough to fit into our tiny, closet-like kitchen. We were glad to find it, but here's the fine print: you have to defrost the freezer the old-fashioned way, by opening the door and letting it thaw. No big deal, as the freezer doesn't hold much. But it frosts up fast in warm weather, or if the floor isn't absolutely level. On two occasions the plastic shelving inside the door has crashed down, eggs and all, so care must be taken not to overload. The motor's hum is not loud in the least, and it has a tall, clean look. We've only had it a few weeks, so time will tell if it holds up.

I'm quite surprised at the number of good reviews, which were the basis for our decision to buy this good-looking little refrigerator. However, after less than two months, the frost buildup in the refrigerated area was large - long and thick. (It's supposed to be frost free.) Since we had the Geek Squad protection, we received an exchange. At the time, a customer representative told us that there was a 75% failure rate with this problem - frost. However, we gave it the benefit of the doubt and received a new one. Sure enough, in less than a month's time, we had a regular North Pole in the freezer, complete with stalactites and stalagmites, also an iceberg hanging to the back of the refrigeration section! We are now negotiating with Best Buy for another brand and model replacement.

I bought this solely as a 2nd refrigerator to keep drinks cool out in the garage. For that purpose alone, this refrigerator fulfills all of my requirements. It's small, easy to move around, and keeps my drinks at a decent temperature. It also is energy-star compliant, so it should only cost me about $35/year to operate. For the price I paid and for the purpose it serves, this is a very good buy. If you are looking to use this as a primary refrigerator inside the house, I would say you may be disappointed. It's a little loud (not an issue for us as it is in the garage), and it frosts up quite quickly. Some of the back wall of my refrigerator is covered in ice, but it is the summer now and is quite humid, so maybe this will subside in the winter. If you can find this on sale, and if you want a low-cost to purchase and low-cost to operate refrigerator, then this will fit your needs nicely.

Igloo does not license this product. It is licensed by an outside company from Canada called Curtis International. That's who your "One Year Warranty" is with when you buy it. Best Buy never told me this, and never offered me a warranty of their own, so in a sense they stole my money when this product broke down after three months and they wouldn't help fix it. I called Best Buy customer service, who told me THEY ARE NOT CONTRACTED TO WORK ON ANY IGLOO PRODUCTS. Igloo told me they don't own the product, they just license their name for Curtis International to sell it. THIS IS A SCAM.

Well guess that old saying is...you get what you paid for!!! I purchased this item on the 28th of December, today is the 24th of January and guess what it does not work anymore. Has not been keeping food cold, so now not only have I lost food ~ I have to return it to the store myself even though I purchased a protection cover ~I then have to wait while they send it out to be repaired...oh and if.....it takes longer than 2 weeks then they will replace it!!! ....SO WE LEARN!!! sorry said the agent we would only allow you to purchase another refrigerator as a replacement, (even though I am quite willing to pay in)...this we could only have allowed if you had returned it within 15 days!!!!....sorry I couldn't predict the future!!!...my mistake....

My boyfriend and I purchased this refrigerator for our kitchen about 9 months ago. It's just the two of us and we don't buy frozen (we shop for fresh food daily) and I love it this smaller refrigerator. It looks great and my boyfriend moved it in with his small pick up and a hand dolly. It holds a great deal of groceries. We had to adjust the thermostat because things we placed on the top self of the refrigerator were freezing. Since we got the temperature right we haven't had problems. It is too small for a ice maker but we purchase a small bag of ice and simple store it in the freezer. Freezer space is limited and I suggest this product for people who rarely freezes food. But then again, additional freezer products could placed in the top shelf of the refrigerator when turned down. Either way I love my refrigerator.

Can't beat the price. I was looking for a narrow and tall unit to replace an older Fridgidaire, went to Home Depot, Sears, Friedman's Appliance, Airport Appliance, Best Buy and Fry's. After eliminating the units available that did not fit the space in my small kitchenette, I had a choice between a Daewoo at Fry's or the Igloo from Best Buy. The Igloo was way cheaper and a tad narrower, so I bought the Igloo with an extended warranty (to make myself feel better in case it was too good to be true about the price). Happy with the purchase. It is quiet but it does have condensation inside the fridge and no door storage in the freezer. Freezer space is also very meager. I did have to change my wall outlet for a recessed one to make sure that the unit fit with enough clearance. I bought a 2 gang recessed outlet on Amazon - works perfectly.
