This shipped quickly and arrived in a timely manner. The case was undamaged and the disc does not skip or have any issues. This was a well-made movie. The storytelling was good and the graphics and imagery were great.

I absolutely love this movie. It's a wonderful tale that's stranger than fiction and shot in the most beautiful way. The 3D is really good and I was surprised to learn that it was post converted. Overall I'd highly recommend this emotional tale about a writer who doesn't believe in himself, but after experiencing an unbelievable tale he takes on the challenge.

Well crafted tale - a forerunner to "Moby Dick"

Nicely conceived account of how Hermann Melville got the idea for his book, "Moby Dick" - interviewing a survivor of a sailing ship that encountered a mighty whale. But this story is deeper: it contains the leadership struggle between sailors and carries the whale tail further by continuing with the struggle for survival by the crew. Good special effects and a fast paced script keeps this very entertaining.

I really liked this movie about the essex seems like an essential movie for any moby dick fan, as it was basically a prequel to moby dick, i wonder how much of a true account this actually was.

I can tell why people did not like this movie much. The trailers promised that we would be along for an adventure hunting a whale. However you only get 3 scenes with the whale. This movie is more about survival than it is whale hunting. Performances are good and the music is great. The whale looks real enough that when he appears on screen you won't take your eyes off of him.

This is my third Sony DVD player. Oops, one was a different brand. That one was first as it was alleged to be the best out there. Maybe at the time. Our second DVD player like the previous ones was 3-D, and 4-K, but it is alleged to be old technology. The third one is the Sony 1000. It has fantastic 4-K and 3-D. Expensive though. Worth the money to us. I highly recommend Sony products, their performance and quality are unsurpassed. The DVD is also great!

I was very pleasantly surprised to watch this movie. In short (without spoilers) it is a retelling of the story of Moby Dick. The visuals were great and watching in 3D is always a plus for me. At the time of purchase, I thought this was going to be just another whale-tale, but realizing it was the telling of Moby Dick helped to draw me into the story.

    On the surface...

This production is both visually and aurally stunning. On the surface it feels truly epic with sweeping cinematography and jaw dropping state of the art CGI effects taking you along on a wave of a sonic orchestral film score. Unfortunately its all surface and little substance. Opposing characters are no more than broad strokes of an extremely honorable and moral good guy up against a by the book regardless of human life authoritarian bad guy; the voice of common reason confronts corporate control, and then it drops that cliche premise of a facade entirely because we now need to join our forces if we are are to be every-men fighting nature -- Yo-Ho, maties! This epic wanna be may take place on the ocean, but it is ultimately pretty shallow, if you ask me. However, If you buy it, do it for how it impressively shows off your home theater system investment because that is how your bluray will serve you best. That is the only reason I checked YES for recommending this bluray to a fiend. If this survey had a MAYBE option, I would have checked that.

A different take on the moby dick story

An interesting take on the old Moby Dick story. From the view point of a survivor of the ship that is destroyed as the story goes on. This movie focused more on what happened to ship and crew. We see the great white however buts that's not the real story. 4K video is a 4 out of 5 and the Dolby Atmos is first rate.

    The Heart of Adventure

In the Heart of the Sea isn't your typical Moby Dick tale. I thought the movie captured the sailing adventure and danger of the whaling days. Character development was better than most movies these days, and the filming of the scenes where the white whale attacks the ship and then the life boats really kept you at the edge of your seat. A good movie worth seeing.

...need I say more? Even a bad movie with Chris in it, is worth watching. He's adorable...he's buff...and he's cute... Did I mention, adorable? If you went to school, you've read Moby Dick...if you're an English major, you've read Moby Dick...now watch the story that led to the writing of Moby Dick! Or, Chris with a wet shirt :)

Please do NOT get hyped about the plot which is based on a popular book. This movie is more about the struggle following the encounter with Moby Dick. Starvation and survival is the focus here. The CGI is great and the emotion is there. Definitely worth checking out. Just dont purchase thinking this is strictly about whale hunting. Its not.

    MOBY DICK REVISITED

I really enjoyed this movie, great camera work and special effects, I loved the story. The retelling of a classic with a twist. My only complaint is that the british accent was really hard to understand at times. Its a low volume film combined with a swallowed dialect made it really it hard to hear. But the cast is fantasic and the whale is stunning! I was impressed that the whale isn't just an object but a true character! A- just due to sound issues.

...This is the movie I have been waiting for!! Seeing the original in black and white on Family Classic (WGN and Frasier Thomas!)...This version however was "simply magic and excellent visualization" from beginning to end credits...pure eye candy from start to finish...(I think) Ron Howard and Clint Eastwood are two of the best writers/directors ever known to film and movies...This even had me emotionally! An awesome movie for all to see...

Historical account of the true whale tale!

This was an interesting film from the standpoint that it sought to give the "true story" of the white whale that was featured in Melville's Moby Dick!. It demonstrates that leadership was often given to the sons of the privileged, who were not often qualified for that role. Hence, Chris Helmsworth must play "Second Mate" to a young captain less qualified & experienced then he. As a result their ship travels to the other side of the world in search of whales including a legendary white whale known for destroying whaling ships. Although the action sequences with the whale attacking the ship are often shown in the movie "trailers" they actually only compose a small amount of the film. The remainder of the film is probably best characterized as the grim and dangerous lives of the sailors of these whaling vessels. It's worth watching for that reason, but if you are looking for one action sequence after another, I would not recommend it.

I took a chance getting this movie because of the potential of the 3d moments and the story of Moby Dick. Glad I did. Really enjoyed the intense moments in this film. Not a lot of 3d but enough to get the point across of the size of the whales. Very well done film.

A dramatic role for Hemsworth proving he's not just a live action figure. Howard's direction is not among his best efforts but the movie has a number of exciting moments, good character interplay and believable special effects. Overall a good joy ride.

This film is another astonishing film by Ron Howard. It's the story that was the basis for the Moby Dick. The characters are well defined as is the pace and story. The acting is spectacular, another great performance by Chris Hemsworth.

This movie don't get it confused as another money dick movie where the whale is just terrorizing people the whole movie. The whale is in it and it does do that but this movie is about the true tale of what happened to inspire that book. It has some great visuals and is a bit disturbing at times but a great movie.
