Ok, the cons, no big deal, but in the movie the government knows about aliens, but somehow the US government is the only one that does, and even then the information isn't shared until after devastation has occurred. The head of the CIA knew, but the president didn't, yet his cabinet knew, makes little sense, but hardly affects the movie in a negative light, and i don't really consider that a negative of the film. As for the pros, great movie, fun aciton, amazing special effects for the time period. Something that is subtle, in one scene you see Israeli and Palestinian aircraft on the same runway in a joint effort. As well, the president declares Independence Day relevant to the world. The spirit of patriotism and hope is clearly present by the end, and makes for an awesome hero action archetype film. If you don't have this movie, you don't have a dvd collection. Oh, i did find one thing i objected to, the one random stripper scene by Vivica A. Fox, considering the family tone, and the language throughout the movie, this scene was out of place and thrown in just for shock factor. It didn't mesh well or belong, and the stripper role could have easily been any other situation or job instead with an even better effect on the film. The scene seemed as though it was thrown in later for the sake of having a woman dancing around.

The film is a bit dated - the presentation is not.

If you were around in summer 1996, you know what a big deal ID4 was when it came out - a pop culture phenomenon if there ever was one during the summer's of the 1990's. However, the film IS admittedly a bit dated now, particularly in the humor department, but it's still a fun ride. Anyone with an older release wondering if it's worth it, well YES it is. The 4K remaster looks miles above the old in both regular blu and UHD. Of Note: I've hear some people complain about the compression artifacts on the UHD disc, but your mileage may vary dependent on your system. That audio on the regular blu sounds as good as ever, but the UHD wins this round BIG TIME with a DTS X multidimensional remix. If you're a home theater buff, like me, already equipped for this, you're in for a treat. Truly immersive and absolutely destroys what was already a great 5.1 mix on the older releases. The attacks, explosions, and general ambience of sets and interiors come to life in a whole new way. Worth it for the upgrade on that alone!

"Good morning. In less than an hour, aircrafts from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for us all today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom...Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution...but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight!" We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

Independence Day still holds up as one of the best guilty pleasures out there. A Summer popcorn muncher that defines the term, the movie is packed with the perfect balance of action, humor, good characters, great visual effects, and memorable moments, essentially everything that makes a "blockbuster" a "blockbuster." It'll be interesting to see if the sequel can match the original's charm, excitement, and lasting appeal, a tall order to be sure but one that team of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are capable of filling. As for this new Blu-ray, it's terrific. A strong improvement over an already good transfer is alone worth the price of admission. A few more new extras would have been nice, but the legacy supplements are terrific. The absence of a new audio track is the only real drawback to this release. Still, it comes very highly recommended.

Most of you reading this have likely already seen the original 'Independence Day'. I had. However, I wanted to see it again ahead of watching the new movie so I went looking for the DVD. I would have settled for a regular DVD; finding it in blu-ray was a bonus. As usual the blu-ray format made for a better experience watching. The package contains two disks. Disk 1 contains both the original and an 'extended' version of the movie. I only watched the extended version. I didn't notice anything that was vastly different from the original, but the cleaned-up, sharper screen images were a treat. Disk 2 contains various extras, including a short feature on the movie, a 'mockumentary' about the first invasion, and a gag reel. I haven't watched any of the extras yet, but they're there. And of course, watching the movie again was fun.

This is a great film and it shows by its box office numbers and numerous DVD releases that other agree with me. None of the special features from the other DVD releases have been ported over for this Blu-ray release. Instead we some audio commentaries and some high definition exclusives that some may enjoy. As far as the picture and audio quality, this is not a computer generated picture, like Pixars 'Cars.' This was shot with a film camera and therefore, grain is to be expected. I would rather see grain than to have the print marred by DNR and come off as a soft representation of its former self. Grain does not equal bad quality. It is a natural occurrence in film. Get used to this people. The picture quality is great, contrary to what some other reviewers have written.

This movie is just an absolute blast with everything you could want from a summer popcorn flick. I already had the previous bluray release which was pretty good but this offered more than enough reasons to double dip with 2 different cuts of the film and a brand new transfer from a 4K scan competing with the look of movies shot today 20+ years later. The only downside is the lack of a DTS X track, which can be found in the 4K release, however most people don't have the setup anyway therefore it isn't that much of a loss especially considering the stunning steelbook case it comes in which alone is worth the $. Also little disappointed with the the disc art. Seems like disc 1's artwork should have been on disc 2 and vice versa.

One of the best films of it's kind, ID4 really delivers in the style of other great films- That being said, to the review, ID4 Tells the story of (gasp) an alien attack on our world ( long before Falling skies) the actions taken for contact are rebuffed, and most of the coastal cities are wiped out. Nuclear weapons are used without success, so the hero's turn to cyber warfare. They succeed and attack the aliens just as the aliens close in . My best pert in the entire film is pilot Case's final lines "I'm Back" just before he destroys the alien craft ( Can't say the rest of the line in the review-see the film -it is that good) So, in closing, I heartily recommend this feel good film. It really does live up to it's billing.

This was one of the first PG-13 movies I ever saw, a signal that I was growing up. This movie is so riveting, and it hasn't lost its charm. It has stood the test of time, and Hollywood is forever in its debt. So many blockbuster movies were influenced by it. The special effects still look real, not dated at all. It has a wonderful story, good heart, and an uplifting message of the ability of humans to work together congenially in a time when all movies think we can never get along. I mean, will the Marvel heroes ever stand one another? They bicker so much :-( Not here, and I am grateful for it. This world needs some positivity. Join with us, and we will celebrate our Independence Day!

In the item description it says this is a DVD, but it's pictured as a blu-ray and the other reviews also speak of hi-def. I wanted the blu-ray and the price is a fraction of what other sites sell it for, so I took the chance and ordered it. It is definitely the blu-ray (hopefully best buy will correct the listing description from DVD). All that aside, this is still a fun, entertaining movie. Great HD transfer with excellent audio. The special effects are dated, but considering the movie is nearly 20 years old and had a certain amount of camp to begin with, it only adds to the entertainment value. Sequel is set to come out within a couple years so I imagine there will be another release of this, but for the price this is a bargain.

The 4K Version of this movie looks really good, very detailed. Worth the upgrade from my original blu-ray. I've read the re-released 20th anniversary blu-ray looks really good too though. So it seems the 20th anniversary edition is a good buy regardless of HD/UHD- but if you've got 4K TV go with the 4K disc. However, once again with Fox Studios, if you own digital HD they won't give you a digital UHD. That part is garbage. Other studios upgrade your digital copy. Not Fox. Hoping Disney will change this after they buy them out.

Independence Day has always had a special place in my heart. And this Blu-ray release is excellent. Great sound and visuals. The special effects also hold up surprisingly well even after all of these years. It has some pretty funny writing and a great performance from Will Smith. If you haven't seen this movie, I would definitely recommend that you do. Although, if I remember correctly there is a "Director's Cut" of this film and this is not it. This is just the theatrical release. I seem to remember some scenes from my DVD that were not on this Blu-ray. So if that matters to you, I would seek out the version that includes the longer cut.

I love this movie ever since it came out 20 years ago and the rerelease on BD over the years as well as the special edition DVD, only wish this 20th Anniversary edition was in 7.1 DTS HD MA as the packaging suggests, but the actual selection on the disc (once loaded) is DTS HD MA 5.1. Overall an awesome film and love the maquette toy of the spaceship attacker! Hopefully the 4K UHD with HDR will truly be DTS HD MA 7.1, 20th Century Fox should correct this on all their packaging (or do a recall for those who have purchased this product), because that is misleading and the level of QC on their part is terrible!

ID4 is one of those movies you can't analyze too much, you just have to enjoy it for what it is. The Blue Ray release looks good, and the release includes some new extras. The only thing I didn't like about this release, and I don't know if it does it just on my TV, but all the old extras from the DVD show up in a little box in the top corner of the screen. Someone at Best Buy told me this is normal when something from DVD is put on Blue Ray, but that doesn't make any sense as I have other Blu Rays that have old DVD content and it doesn't look like that. But the movie itself looks and sound great

When I saw this movie for the first time in the late 90s, I enjoyed it immensely. The explosions and thoughts of intelligent alien life made for quite the experience. I was 11 years old then. I'm a little older now, and my criteria has changed for what makes a film great. With that being said, I enjoyed it immensely. The explosions and thoughts of intelligent alien life made for quite the experience.... The actual acting was marginal, almost like a parody of the Independence Day I watched all those years ago. But the nostalgia of the good old days. It was a simpler time then...

The aliens are real but they don't want to be taken to our leader...they want to eliminate the leader and everyone else. The film uses very subtle tongue-in-cheek humor throughout (at the beginning of the movie, the SETI personnel are listening to "It's The End of the World As We Know It" on the radio) and takes the audience on wild ride. Wil Smith puts Han Solo to shame as the hotshot air force pilot and Judd Hirsch steals several scenes with his dry, irreverent humor. Randy Quaid gives a hilarious performance as the space abduction victim nobody ever believed. Special effects are great and so's the story. The Fourth of July was never so much fun.

Here's the thing about 4K in case you didn't know already: as great as Blu-rays are, the 4K format makes you feel like you're part of the cinematic experience instead of merely just watching it. With its wider spectrum of color palette, contrast, and amazing depths, this alien blockbuster film looks even better than before, leaving the viewer wanting little to no more. The film itself is thoroughly enjoyable, but in 4K, it's well worth the upgrade if you already own the standard Blu-ray.

I bought this movie to complete my Will Smith conversions to Blu-ray, but this is such an entertaining movie, and if you have a surround sound system-- OMG! You can almost feel the ships landing. I am not as enthusiastic about the sequel, but it's not bad. This movie focuses on the relationships and the human element coping against the invasion. The aliens are not even seen until almost an hour in; the sequel is more focused on the aliens and the special effects. But, don't get me wrong-- the effects in the original are AWESOME!

To tell the truth when blue ray came out I couldn't see a big difference between DVD and blue ray. 4K blue ray on the other hand I see the difference. It is almost a sensory overload to the eyes as the blacks are incredible black and the whites incredibly white. With the 7.1 audio that my Samsung N950 sound bar delivers it delivers a phenomenal experience on a great sci-fi film.
