    80's Par Excellence!

    Posted .

Back in the day my Mother & I went to a Sunday matinee, a film called "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" both of us were not expecting much, I knew Harrison Ford was in it from "Star Wars" fame other than that I knew very little about the premise. To our surprise we were about to take a nail biting on the edge of your seat adventure the likes we had never seen & after the film we both agreed it was a great action & adventure film with style & a flair that was rare for its time in the decade that saw the death of the drive-in theater & an industry slowly leaving American shores in search of cheaper locales. What we saw was the culmination of 50 years since sound came about with Hollywood understanding & formulating great film making.. par excellence! Director Steven Spielberg really took the reins and directed one of his best films and it didn't hurt having George Lucas in the background ensuring the storyline stayed tight this was the best of the series because this is a film that did not rely on its FX or it's elaborate set pieces it had a real script that was engaging, full of energy and moved with a purpose without the need to side-plot due to lack of material it stayed on track from beginning to end. The sequels that came after showed sparks yet fell short to the superior original.. I know, that's what they all say yet in this case it is the undisputed truth that ROTLA is far superior to what came after, sequel after sequel that became FX extravaganza's with substandard scripts & actors that relied more & more on set piece after set piece with plots that were not on par with the original. Video - Very good Blu-ray image but not great.. Blacks are not inky and at times look dark gray. Flesh tones look unnatural at times with an orange tinge yet in daylight everything looks natural. Not the type of video you will say is demo material but it looks darn nice and it appears the grain is intact with no filtering or digital manipulating yet you will see very little film damage it's a clean presentation. Sound - Very strong soundtrack in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 does this great film justice A very well rounded aural experience is to be had with nice rear field channel usage, when the action begins you will be immersed in sound. I stayed away from the film series set since I feel the others do not even come close to this highly original film, they were just riding off the fame of a truly great production.. a moment in American film making that will never come again!.... I highly recommend this Blu-ray! 5 star film...3 1/2 star Blu-ray

This classic film is only available for rent or purchase on the various platforms. It was a bargain at this price and a joy to watch again! Now that it is part of my library of DVDs I will not have tp pay for a rental through a streaming service.

One of the Greatest Adventure Movies Ever Filmed

    |
    Posted .

Director Steven Spielberg reinvented the action genre in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark: a fun adventure the whole family can enjoy. Endless jokes and crafty set pieces lead you on a journey around the world. Raiders of the Lost Ark was written with a sarcastic and clever tone by Lawrence Kasdan. Spielberg makes good use of miniatures, practical effects, special effects, close ups, wide shots, and tracking panning shots throughout Raiders. You will be hard pressed to find a more fast-paced adventure film than Raiders of the Lost Ark. John Williams composed perhaps the most uplifting score of his career: you are swept off your feet when you hear the Indiana Jones theme kick in. The music accompanies the tense moments and thrilling action sequences alike with an apt sonic swirl. I love the Indiana Jones soundtrack to this day. Harrison Ford is so likable and relatable as the bumbling yet intelligent Indiana Jones. You believe he can fight with some prowess, while also believing in his archaeological talents. Likewise, Karen Allen is deft and cool as Marion Ravenwood, Indiana Jones' love interest and romantic foil. Allen is excellent as adventurer, rough house fighter, as well as the romantic leading lady. She is funny and sweet, while always giving Raiders of the Lost Ark some much appreciated verbal thrashing. I think Karen Allen was well suited as Indiana's opposite. In conclusion, Raiders of the Lost Ark holds up today with a swift adventure feel. You always believe in Indiana Jones from his lectures, to his home, to his action sequences. It is as much fun as when I first saw it in the theater.

A good action and adventure film! Not as good as I remembered it from first buying it on videodisc, but entertaining! It, though, lacks a charisma that other very good, to great, films have! Harrison Ford is good, but he is no Errol Flynn or John Wayne in his screen presence!

This is the best Indiana Jones of them all

    |

Temple of Doom? Boring by comparison once you get past the opening scene. Last Crusade? Great performances but not as memorable as it was politicized all throughout which distracted from the raw story telling. Crystal Skull? What's that?! Har har. No, but seriously, it was a much needed update but it just went too "out there" if you know what I mean. Raiders has the action, the Romance and leaves out all of the more complex elements which are really just a distraction for this kind of stuff. It is raw and compelling story telling. Sadly though, the copy Best Buy sells has an irredeemable digital copy so I returned mine. If you want digital, look elsewhere.

The Best Adventure Film Ever! Hands Down!

While it may have been the role of Hans Solo in `Star Wars' that planted the name of Harrison Ford within the collective consciousness of the American (and world for that matter) public, it was his portrayal of the adventurous Indiana Jones in the '81 blockbuster `Raiders of the Lost Ark' that made him the iconic film legend he is today. The first of three epic adventures, `Raiders of the Lost Ark' is in my estimation the best of the series so far (a fourth is now in production so who knows). If this is your genre of entertainment you have found your pot-of-gold. Amazing special effects, superb cast, an unforgettable soundtrack and a script and storyline overflowing with clever, quotable dialogue and heavy supernatural undertones that are absolutely mesmerizing. Simply the "Best of the Best!

I don't have fond memories of Indiana Jones from my childhood. I watched the films, liked them, but for me, Star Wars and Jurassic Park were what ruled the roost. With a couple of decades and a fresh perspective, I found a new enjoyment for the series. I've also realized just how integral Harrison Ford was to the best era for film (Late seventies to late eighties, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones...) I've now gotten to the point where I watch the Indi trilogy a few times a year and find myself enthralled by just how great the journey is. Ford's cocky attitude perfectly makes Indiana Jones a character you have to cheer for. The Raider's blu-ray is fantastic, and although it doesn't have all of the supplemental material that the set has, it is still worth every penny.

    A Must Have Classic

Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and George Lucas! It doesn't get any better than this. A throwback to the Hollywood Serials of the 1930's 40's and 50's when every local small town theater offered up the latest Saturday afternoon serial featuring the undaunted hero left in a life threatening perilous ending. How many times can Indie escape? No need to come back next week. It's all right here. This film is a great addition to any collection.
