It is a mechanical compressor based cooler, which I have been told is more reliable than the solid state cooler. This one is replacing a solid state cooler that lasted less than 4 years. It does not have a thermometer to show the exact temperature, and the temperature control is located behind wine bottles when the lower rack is full.
