My Goal: Replace my Macbook Pro hard drive with a 250-G Samsung SSD.
(A) I purchased the SSD and Insignia™ - 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Drive Enclosure.
(B) I Installed the SSD in the Insignia enclosure (5 min).
(C) I used a USB cable and Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to clone an exact duplicate of my Macbook hard drive onto the SSD (1-2 hrs).
(D) I shut down the Mac and rebooted from the external SSD to confirm everything was working. It was!
(E) I removed the hard drive from the Macbook, installed the SSD, and re-booted. Voila! Much faster!.
(F) I installed the old hard drive into the Insignia so I now have a 250-G USB HDD available for backups, media, etc.
The entire procedure was flawless, and I highly recommend upgrading your older Macbook with an SSD. CCC and the Insignia enclosure were ideal for the purpose.

I put a SSD drive in the enclosure and use it for expanded offline storage. Connecting is a simple USB connector. It is easy to use and convenient to transport. Installing the drive was mainly taking out som screws and then putting them back in.

Great metal case ...

This case is very well made and durable because it is metal and not plastic. With that said, one must use a screwdriver to remove a hard drive from the case. It is very useful to have an external hard drive in such a case so that the hard drive can be swapped in case of a computer failure.
The case side has a Micro USB 3.0 female connector. The cable supplied is a male micro USB 3.0 to male USB 3.0. You must use an adapter to connect the case to a new MacBook Pro with USB C. Lastly, because the case is powered from the bus, if you attach the hard drive case to a USB hub, the hub must be powered.
You can probably find a similar product for less money online, but it is nice to be able to pick up the item locally in a shop.

I did not even know this was an option when I went into Geek Squad Services. Due to the fact I let the coverage elapse on my old laptop, I did not have coverage and was looking at a pricy service/labor charge $$$. The representative told me about these enclosures and I tried it out with great results.
If you are not a techie, I would definitely encourage you to buy this product. Make sure your computer is still on its last legs though. Once the drive is shot (& you don’t have coverage) it costs way more than $30. There are tons of videos out there explaining/showing how to take apart all sorts of laptops so you don’t have to hesitate… If all you want to do is retrieve the data from your drive, go for it and chuck your old laptop. You can continue using the enclosure with your old drive as an external drive.

I was looking for a drive enclosure for a laptop drive from my old computer. The drive fits well, runs fine, and it was cheap enough. I'd buy this again.

I recently had the Geek Squad replace my HDD with a SSD. The agent asked me what I planned to do with the 2TB HDD, and I said I would probably just junk it. He showed me this enclosure, explained how to use it, and I'm very glad I bought it.
I'm terrible with anything hardware-related (e.g., installing RAM, swapping out drives), but it was super easy to open this enclosure and insert my old HDD. I plugged it into the USB port on my computer, formatted the drive, and presto-- I had a new 2TB external HDD. Much better than junking the drive! Great purchase.

Great for moving data during PC Upgrades.
It is a simple way to Plug n Play an old drive with data on it into a new machine.
Just remove the drive from an older laptop, insert into the enclosure, attach the cover and plug into a USB port. Once the data is migrated, the disk can be cleared and the drive can later be used to replace flash-drives.
I plan on replacing the original spin-drive the enclose was obtained for, with a Solid State Drive so as to become my replacement for mobile data storage and backups; so data loss due to physical damage is reduced. The metal enclose is the perfect protection for a spin-drive, but one can never be too safe when it comes to mobile data storage.
My only wish (a minor one) is that the drive light (a blue LED) would be on the opposite end then the USB Cable port. That way the drive would rest on a desk or table with the cables to the rear and give the ability to see the drive access LED when the need arises. I examined the circuit board prior to using the enclosure and understood the reasons that INSIGHT places the LED and USB port on the same side, it was just a matter of simple assembly for a user. Having a LED on the other end would require leads and wires to the end-cap at the other end of the enclose. This minor LED placement in no way distracts from the true function and purpose of the enclose and is just a personal preference of mine since I like my USB cables to be neat and tidy even when remote.
For simplicity and ease of setup --- this one is perfect. It truly is Plug and Play.

I was upgrading a couple of systems with SSD drives and needed a new external enclosure for a 1TB Notebook drive. Best Buy had this available and the price was reasonable so picked this up.
The enclosure is a combination of plastic and metal which should help keep the drive somewhat cool during operation. It only requires 2 screws to be removed to install the drive. A small screwdriver is actually included in the package for this purpose. It also comes with a USB 3.0 Cable.
Installation was easy and speeds appeared good however did not do a benchmark on the enclosure for specifics. Overall would recommend if you have a SATA notebook drive around or doing an upgrade on an existing laptop and need an external enclosure.

Just like my Bill and Ted quote, this thing's excellent. Haha. It really is a nice case and super easy to setup. I love that they give you the little Phillips head or whatever it was so you don't have to go find one. Very convenient. Assembly and install was a breeze with 2 screws, a cover plate and the connector inside for your SSD. I went with a Samsung Evo 1tb and it works flawlessly. Little blue light when shows you when something's working.

I was doing Christmas shopping at my local Best Buy when I came upon this product. What caught my attention was the price of the item. I did a double take just to make sure it was the right price. I've been looking for a cover for a hard drive from an old computer that was removed. This item appeared at the right time. I've been using since the day I bought it. Well worth it and it didn't break my budget at all.

I bought this to recover the data off of my son's broken notebook computer. This enclosure works great. It is a solid product and is well worth the price. A screwdriver is included, so you have everything you need in the box including the USB 3.0 cable. All you need to provide is the SATA drive. Once I recovered the data, I reformatted the drive to wipe everything off of it so that it would have plenty of storage for backup.

These comments are based upon out-of-the-box side-by-side testing with the equivalent Anker product.
In terms of real-life speed testing, it was interesting to note that it depended upon the drive being tested. The Insignia hard drive enclosure produced faster speeds on most of my HDDs, whereas the Anker hard drive enclosure produced faster speeds on most of my SDDs.
This Insignia hard drive enclosure is easier to open and close, which is a plus if that's a feature you need, but the overall build quality of the Anker hard drive enclosure seems a bit better.

2.5" serial ATA drive works perfectly. I'm using a 1 TB SSD in it, so it's very fast. No problems at all.
The black aluminum case has a nice solid feel to it, especially compared to the cheaper plastic enclosures I also own. Inserting the drive is dead easy. Remove two small screws (using the screwdriver provided) and then just slip it in.

My computer's motherboard failed. It would have been more expensive to replace that than buy a new computer. But what about the data? The hard drive was in fine shape. In order to be able to save and use my data before I bought a new computer, it was suggested that I buy this hard drive enclosure and have the old hard drive placed inside. Problem solved in a fast, affordable way! Now I can access and use my data on any other computer. Used it, works great.

I'm not a computer expert so I didn't know what to do with the extra hard drive. I found this little beauty and now I'm using this to back up stuff as an external drive. It works great, no problems so far, and it's very fast, again, best to my knowledge. I connect it to my USB 2.0 and it transfered at about 5 mbps then I changed it to USB 3.0 and it transfered at 30mbps. Easy to install 2 little screws and thats it. Recommend it if you have aditional drives laying around.

The Insignia™ 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Drive Enclosure is a decent product that offers a convenient way to convert an internal hard drive into an external one. While it serves its purpose reasonably well, there are a few aspects that leave room for improvement, leading me to give it a three-star rating.
Firstly, I appreciate the sleek and compact design of this hard drive enclosure. The black finish gives it a professional and modern look that blends well with other tech accessories. The enclosure feels sturdy and well-built, providing adequate protection for the hard drive. The installation process is relatively straightforward, and the enclosure comes with all the necessary cables and screws.
However, one major drawback of this enclosure is the lack of clear and detailed instructions. While the installation process is generally straightforward, I found myself struggling to understand some of the steps, especially for users who are not familiar with setting up hardware. Better instructions or even an online tutorial would greatly improve the user experience.
In terms of performance, the Insignia™ enclosure delivers satisfactory results. The transfer speeds are decent, allowing for fast data transfers between the hard drive and the computer. The enclosure supports USB 3.0, which is a plus for those seeking faster file transfer rates. However, it's worth noting that the speeds may not match those of more premium enclosures available on the market.
Another aspect that could be improved is the overall durability of the enclosure. While the build quality seems decent, some users have reported issues with the enclosure's longevity over time. It is essential to handle it with care and avoid any accidental drops or impacts that could potentially damage the hard drive inside.
Additionally, the enclosure lacks any additional features or enhancements that could set it apart from other similar products. It would be great to see added features like built-in security or better heat dissipation to protect the hard drive and optimize its performance.
Lastly, it's important to mention that the compatibility of the Insignia™ enclosure may be limited to certain hard drive sizes or brands. It's advisable to double-check the specifications and ensure that your particular hard drive is compatible before purchasing.
In conclusion, the Insignia™ 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Drive Enclosure is a decent option for those looking to convert their internal hard drive into an external one. Its sleek design, satisfactory performance, and compatibility with USB 3.0 make it a viable choice. However, the lack of detailed instructions, durability concerns, and the absence of additional features prevent it from receiving a higher rating. With some improvements in these areas, this enclosure could become a more competitive option in the market.
