I have used external HD docks before. They are useful, and the Insignia is as easy as it is to use. Good throughput and easy/no setup.

The hard drive on my HP desktop was on the way out and I bought the replacement hard drive at Best Buy along with the "toaster" that copies the programs. Even though I am not a techie the instructions were written clearly and the entire process took about 2 hours to complete. The new hard drive works great and this saved me $1,000 as compared to a new desktop.

I had a desktop computer where the graphics card died, and needed to recover the information to transfer to the new computer. This worked perfectly!! Just plug in and use as a regaular external drive. This was a life saver!

Excellent external docking station (USB 3.0). Current computer does not have any 3.5 drive mounts so this docking station allows one to review old back up SATA drives.

I am helping a business convert from older 3.5" HDD to 2.5" SSD and this has come in clutch with cloning. I have more than made my money back with this device. While I use cloning software, the fact that this makes it so easy to swap in drives has been incredible at saving time. I like it so much, I have two of them now.

I purchased this so I could migrate my OS and programs from my old computer to my new one. My old computer would not turn on so I removed the hard drive and used this docking station to make the transfer. Worked flawlessly. I suppose you could use this as an external drive also. Hard drives are cheap and you could have a 2TB or more external drive for cheap.

I purchased this because I'd received a 1TB internal drive to put in my PS4 and when I'd try to install it i'd get an error saying USB device not connected. I already had a single bay dock but it was USB2 and the PS4 wanted 3. It didn't work with the PS4 so had to use a thumb drive but it does seem to work with my desktop. I like the feature that allows you to plug in a USB thumb drive.

Everytime I buy a new computer, I break down my old computer and save my hard drives for storage. This item will not only hold the raw drives safely but allows you to connect your older drives to your new computer to find old files rather than taking up space on your new computer. They do not take much space on your desk top so you can leave it on your desk or box it away and put it in a drawer. It cost less than most flash drives and your old drive will hold more data than a flash drive.

I have several computers. It never fails, usually the video chip or Motherboard is the first thing to fail after 5-8 years. I have several SATA drives that are just fine that I want to recover data from. This device makes it easy. Eventually, if I have room in my new desktop computers, I add in the disk, reformat it, and use it for data or backup. This device just makes it easy to recover files from old system's SATA drives.

I purchased this unit so that I could do full drive backups of the various computers at my house. This unit worked immediately on each of my computers, without any issues at all. It is large enough to be stable when inserting and removing the bare hard drives, but small enough to not take up much space. All of my computers run Windows 10, so I can't say how it would work with other operating systems.

I'm not super techy, and when my laptop quit and I needed important documents off the hard drive a search showed me this was the solution. I would've preferred just getting a cable but wasn't able to find one in a timely manner. I still find it difficult to get to all the information on my old hard drive, but I did get my much needed documents and that's what is important.
