I thought that it was the disk drive, but it turned out to be the SATA disk cable! Who would have thought that a cable inside the computer would go bad. I replaced the old cable with one of these Insignia cables, and the problem was solved.

One of the three I purchased had a broken clip which made it useless. The others were fine. It could have been a fluke for that one.
