The best "convection" like oven for one

Air fryers are better than a convection toaster oven but only if portions are small (1 meal or 2 sides - for two complete meals, get a >5L size). And so, you don't have to feel bad needing to cook up a small meal for yourself. Cheaper, smaller, easier to clean, and impossible to overload (like an oven), most foods can be cooked in an air fryer. Meats should be fried (to sear) and then baked... or better air fried (meat and fish is better than chicken). Most cooking is 20% faster (AND 20% cooler temp) than a conventional oven, producing a Maillard reaction with amino acids and sugars in the food's surface for the distinctive "deep fried" favor mostly acquired with hot air but without the extra fat and calories of actually deep frying stuff. This is a tool for a single individual with limited counter space or for one wanting to save time and energy over a conventional oven. And so, you don't want to spend very much. I spent $25 on my toaster oven (good for two and bigger pizza - I kept trying to use the "toaster option," overheating the poor thing, but never got the crispiness this does in half the time), spending the saved cash on this cheap Insignia air fryer. Fish is now cooked perfectly. Both the basket and lower drawer is dishwasher safe. Again, don't compare this to oil frying but to a convection oven. For instance, frozen fries that would take 12 to 20 minutes in the oven but only 4 in an oil fryer take 10 minutes in an air fryer (at 360-390F instead of 450F). It's smaller than my toaster oven at a foot around by 14 inches deep (handle) and 13 inches tall. There's no cord storage. No need for digital controls and manual is quicker for me (BUT the difference between 4 and 5 minutes is hard to discern). You shouldn't expect it to last but a quarter as long as your conventional oven (thus expect to buy four of these before you would replace it). Thus, $15+ more for digital controls is $60+ over that time period. Moreover, everything is fancier and cheaper in the future - so planned obsolescence is a good thing. Most other entry fryers have a shorter timer (and scale in Celsius for some). The top rated budget Black and Decker is smaller (2 liters) with lower power so the Secura or Avalon Bay both with a rack for grilling ($15 more) or the GoWise (digital with 8 presets, $25 more) are better direct comparisons. Insignia is a Best Buy only product but only has a single year warranty (some are for 2). The results seem just as good as a $250 Philips air fryer (which I'd expect to last twice as long but I see that as a disadvantage to buying a new clean machine later). The T-fal ActiFry is a very different beast designed to use some oil with a built-in stirrer and is also huugely more expensive. This was a great buy at $35 and became a popular Christmas gift. All were using it immediately on Christmas day (for fat free potatoes, crispy vegetables, etc). Enjoy four pre-made biscuits, after Pamming the basket, in 4 minutes. Wrap 8 egg roll wrappers around 1/2 cup of cooked pork, onion, garlic, ginger, soy, wine, and 1/3 package of coleslaw, Pam basket and rolls, cook for 8 minutes at 350F, 4 at a time. See YouTube for rolling hints. Pam cauliflower florets and cook for 5 minutes at 400F. Toss in a little hot wing sauce and cook for 5 more. Boil potatoes cubes for 5 minutes, combine with baby carrots, and coat with olive oil, garlic salt, other seasonings, and Parmesan. Cook for 20 minutes. Pam brussels sprouts, season, lemon, and cook for 10-12 minutes. Asparagus cooks in 8-10 mins. Now, cakes still cook at 350F and for just as long or longer - so no advantage. This is generally for meat, fries, veggies, or rolls... best for no pan cooking.

This brand and model is probably the cheaper of the air fryers out there but it's an amazing product. Simple and easy to use. There really is no need for a digital one which is more expensive. So far I've cooked falafel balls and chicken wings and they came out evenly cooked and perfectly crisp. On a side note, I did marinate the wings with Cajun spices and a little olive oil, and possibly the reason for the extra crispiness. All in all, happy with my first air fryer.

This was the first purchase of an air fryer for my wife. We have used it to make meatloaf, bacon, reheat cold fried chicken and of course French fries and tater tots among other things. It does really well on frozen foods made for cooking in the oven. In fact, a lot of the cooking instructions on frozen foods now include air fryer directions. It is very versatile and convenient and it doesn't heat up the kitchen. The nonstick interior makes clean up easy. The basket is a little small so I have to cook in two or three batches for our family of 4. Overall, this is an excellent product and it is fun to cook with it.

We had never tried an air fryer but after some research we decided to give it a try and love it! We made home made fried chicken and it came out crispy, we couldn't believe it wasn't deep fried! We have also cooked corn dogs & french fries and also would never know it wasn't deep fried. We have reheated pizza, cooked cheese sticks and hot wings. We love how fast it cooks verses an oven. The only reason we didnt give it 5 stars is because every use it releases a plastic smell while cooking, but others we know who have an air fryer in another brand does the same as well. Make sure to wash basket and base before use and flip food over during its cook time to allow crispness on both sides.

I always wanted to try out an air cooker and but all of them are expensive and cheap one doesn't even looks good. I found a middle ground with this one. Because I had the option to choose what kind I want so the product would be same but depending on what size or type you buy it will be cheaper. One thing I wish was better with this air cooker was the temperature switch. It's not specific, ex. It is hard to tell if the temperature set to 360 or 370. That's why 4 star but it was cheaper so not a bad deal.

My son just moved out and doesn't know how to cook! This has added regular food to his apartment. No more shopping only in the frozen microwave food aisle! He now eats real chicken, french fries, pizza rolls, and other foods. Unfortunately, he is experimenting with microwave food also so frozen burritos get air fried too! This is the perfect size for him. It's big enough for him to cook for himself and another person. It keeps it simple with the analog controls. Just twist the knob!

I had heard other people talk about liking their air fryers and I had my doubts, but this one is awesome! It heats up very fast, and the food tastes great! On those busy days when preparing a complete meal is not possible, this thing is the bomb! When finished, cleaning up is a breeze. We can just wipe it clean with a kitchen towel; nothing sticks to the surface of the basket or to the food container.

If you looking to eat healthy this is the perfect product. The air fryer removes the grease from the food and the taste is amazing and tender! The only down part would be that you’d need patience if you have a large family; for example 4 chicken legs fit in the basket therefore you’d have to cook an additional batch or maybe two or three batches depending the size of your family. But as mentioned it’s worth the wait.

As soon as I got it I tried it and I was glad I purchased it. It is big enough to cook for 2 to 4 people. I tried different things like fries and meat and bread. Lately I started baking cakes in it, as soon as I found a pan small enough to fit in it ( 7 inches). It's easy and simple. And really easy to clean. You just need to find out the right temperature and time for different things. I almost cook everything in it.

I used it once so far to heat up hash browns and it came out nice and crispy! I’ve been wanting an air fryer for a while now and finally decided to go for this one even though it had no reviews. I took my chances and I am not disappointed! It’s bigger than I thought too!! I’ll keep you guys posted as I continue to explore.

I didn’t believe this product at first, when people were talking about is healthier for you. Then I give it a try let me put my guard down and let me purchase this product. I tried it with chicken wings and it was more tastier air fried then if it was actually Fried in oil. What I like about this product is your house doesn’t smell like you’ve been frying food all day. It’s quick and easy like 1,2,3.

We’ve been talking about an air fryer for a while. Never owned one before. The prices can vary immensely as can the capacity. Did some online research and ruled out the very small and the very large. Then found this one at an unbelievable sales price and bought it. “Fried” up some wings-zero oil-great taste.

We love our air fryer. No greasy mess but delicious foods that have the texture of fried food. Caution, its better if you do not fill it full leave room for air to flow around the food. If you short cycle the timer too often it may malfunction but otherwise its great. tator tots and those hash brown things like you get at fast food places are perfect.

My kids are impatient when they are hungry, especially when we get home after school/daycare/work... I love being able to toss something in and walk away and play with the kids until it dings :) I've cooked everything from mini corn dogs to bacon to pot roast. Anything that can be cooked in the oven can be cooked in the air fryer.

Even with a fan, the heating is more on top. So, food at the bottom are a lot less heated. I believe a lot of other brands will have the same problem. How do home appliance engineers design that? Based on undergraduate fluid mechanics, should have know continuity principle & the current fan design is of no use at all. We paid ~$35, so, no more complaint.

Great present for my baby boy at college! I purchased this appliance for my son who is away at college. He really loved using ours when he would come home on break, so his dad and I figured it was time to get him one for school. He shares it with his other apartment mates and it’s really worked out well for them.

I brought this on sale for my wife. It is a good product for the price I paid. Which was about 35 dollars. So far she likes it and we've made quite a few things on it. Clean up is easy. It does not hold much so at times we have to cook extra things on the side but as I said so far it's a good product for the price.

My knowledge of air fryers is minimal. The only thing I know is that it's much healthier than cooking in oil... I love this thing. Easy to use (I was debating between this and the digital model) and right out of the box, the setup is simple and I was using it to fry potatoes immediately. I recommend this!

I really don’t fry foods but a couple of times a year but thought the air fryer would come in handy when grandkids visit. I put it to the test making tater tots which the kids love and I usually bake. It was a fail they taste better baked than with the air fryer so back to the store it went.

I originally purchased another air fryer but realized that there was no separate grate from the frying basket so that whatever you’re frying will sit in the oil. This air fryer has that separation so that the oil drains down to the bottom. It works great and cooks very fast.
