Does not work with AirPods Max

I bought these cables and plugged it into my MBP and was not able to hear anything. There was no pop up indicator or anything when I plugged the 3.5mm end into the MBP. It looks I will have to purchase the Apple $35 cable instead because those are bi-directional unlike these generic ones.

I tried to use with this cable on an airplane and they did not function at all. Apple evidently has an embedded chip in the "official" Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm cable. I picked the Apple one up for the return flight and it worked fine.
