Customers consistently note the significant improvement in air quality and quiet operation, particularly on lower settings. Many appreciate the ease of setup and the purifier's effectiveness in removing odors. However, some customers find the replacement filters to be expensive. The compact design and user-friendly display are also frequently praised.

Disclaimer: I am a member of Best Buy’s Technical Insider Network, TIN for short. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. Initial impressions: The Insignia Air Purifier NS-APMWH2 for Medium rooms is about the size of a small stool. It has dual air intakes, an easy to service filter, multiple fan speeds, timers, button locks, air quality sensors not hidden behind an app or pay wall, and multiple fan speeds. The unit even comes with an auto and night mode. The Insignia Air Purifier is unassuming, sits on the floor, does not overpromise, and does a fairly good job of cleaning particulates and odors from the air. Setup: The NS-APMWH2 takes less time to setup than it does to remove it from its box. Setup includes removing packing tape, removing the filter from its bag and re-inserting it into the air purifier, removing the cellophane stickers from the readout panels, and plugging it into the wall. That’s it. Using: The NS-APMWH2 comes with a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is wrapped in a pre-filter and a charcoal filter. The pre-filter stops larger airborne pollutants such as pet hair and the charcoal filter removes odors from the air. The NS-APMWH2 allows for four fan speeds: moon, low, medium, high. Low and “moon” mode seem to be the same speed. I’m guessing moon mode is “quiet, I’m sleeping in the same room,” mode. Both are ultra-quiet. Auto mode leverages the built-in air quality sensors to determine the correct fan speed. If the air quality is Great, then auto mode will maintain a low fan speed. If the air quality is poor, then the auto mode will ramp up the fan speed. For my home, auto mode never increased fan speed above low. Though, there are instances where I manually set the fan speed to medium. See Performance section below. Now, how do I know that the air quality in my room was low enough to justify the low fan speed? The NS-APMWH2 has an easy-to-read LCD display on the front of the unit that tells you the air quality. Amazingly, this is the only air filter I own that measures and reports the air quality. The number on the front of the unit displays the number of particles less than or equal to 2.5 micrometers. When I first started the unit, the number hovered around 030. Within an hour the number alternated between 001 and 006. Events like, say, burning dinner, added pollutants to the air and thus increased this number. To the left and right of this number are 4 x 5 light banks that color code my air quality: Great is green, Okay is yellow, Bad is orange, and Hazardous is red. Thankfully, my room’s air quality is soundly in the green. What I like about this system is that I “do not” need a fancy app to give me relatively simple information. At the end of the day, my goal is clean air and not a fancy new app for my cell phone. The air purifier does exactly what it says it does and nothing more. That I can appreciate. Changing the air filter is super simple. Remove the door, pop out the old filter, pop in a new filter, and close the door. Setting the timer, child safety lock, auto mode, and sleep modes are accessible from the top panel and very easy to setup. You have to get out of your chair to adjust the NS-APMWH2 settings. Then again, with other air purifiers, I have spent upwards of an hour trying to figure out how to remotely change fan speeds or find the page that tells me the air quality. I’ll take the exercise over the frustration every day of the week. Performance: Performance is pretty good. I have not once had to run the NS-APMWH2 at a fan speed higher than medium. Setting fan speeds, auto modes, sleep, and timers are also super easy. The user’s manual tells you everything you need to know. To try out the unit, I lit several wooden matches next to the air intake. I noticed two things. First, the smoke did not 100% enter the air intake. This made the room smell like burning wood and sulfur for a few minutes. Second, the burning wood and sulfur smell did not last long with the NS-APMWH2 running at medium fan speed. My expectations here may have been a little overly ambitious. I did not consider that the updraft from the fan would impact the environment around the updraft as much as it did. Opps. This is probably why every air purifier I have owned has failed to capture all the smoke. The good news is that the NS-APMWH2 did a quick job of filtering out the odors. Next, I put the unit in my kitchen where I cooked fried eggs and salami for lunch. To be fair to the NS-APMWH2, I cleaned up all the dirty dishes, pans, and stove top. This eliminated the source of the odors. All the windows in the room were closed. Normally, when I do this, the odor from this food can last hours when the room is sealed, and the source of the odors is eliminated. It took the NS-APMWH2 about five minutes to remove the lunch odors from the room. That is pretty good in my book. I then moved the air filter into my finished basement. Odors get trapped in this room all the time. The finished side of my basement is much larger than my kitchen and fits closer to this air purifier's 380 sq. ft. recommended room size than my kitchen does. It took about an hour to clean the same lunch smell from the air. I could detect an improvement within the first 10 minutes. Again, pretty good when compared with other air purifiers I have owned. Finally, I baked dinner in my dirty oven. I did not know at the time that the floor of the oven was covered with butter from a previous meal. This caused the oven to produce some smoke and a terrible odor. The NS-APMWH2 cleaned out the smoke and odor within 10 minutes on medium fan speed. Where does the NS-APMWH2 not do so well? The NS-APMWH2 has the same challenge I have with any other air purifier I have owned. It does not clean dust from the air all that well. My office gets direct sunlight first thing in the morning. That is the time of day I can see the dust floating in the air. And it floats, and floats, and floats. The air intakes are too low to the ground to pull dust particles to the filter. I am sure some dust is being captured. But this is an area where the NS-APMWH2 does not beat the effects of time and gravity. Now, how does the room look over time? I am noticing overall less dust in the air since I started using the NS-APMWH2. So, it seems to be having some positive impact on the room’s dust density. Portability. The NS-APMWH2 is not heavy. But I feel it could use a handle either molded into the side or as an attachment. I am still young and mobile. Bending fully over to pick the unit up from the bottom is not an issue for me. People who have mobility issues may find it cumbersome to move this unit from room to room because they may not be able to bend down or squat low enough to get their hands under the unit. I would like to see handles in the next revision of the NS-APMWH2. Final thoughts: Overall, I am completely satisfied with this Insignia air purifier. There are no frills or gimmicks. I cleans odors from the air. Is quiet. And is easy to operate. I would like handles to make the unit easier to move around the house. But that is a minor inconvenience for me. The air filter is simple and inexpensive when compared with other air purification solutions on the market. I like the control panel. The LCD screen is easy to read and understand. What more can you ask for?

At this point I may just have one of the most air purified homes there are. This is my 4th air purifier in my modest 1500 sf house. That also gives me a lot to compare. As far as how well it actually purifies the air it does what its made to do. This one went into my home office which is the only room that didn't have one prior and I tend to have the door shut most of the time, so it didn't really get much air purification from the other 3 air purifiers I have in other areas of the house. Working in this small space I can definitely tell a difference in the air quality. The 'auto' feature works well too and is really nice to have while working in my office. As long as the air quality remains good the fan runs at a low speed that doesn't bother me as I work, but at the same time I know that if the air quality starts dropping it'll speed up to handle that so that I can just set it and forget it. On the topic of air quality, this has a nice color coded meter with an actual reading of what the sensors are picking up in the air. I have no way of knowing how accurate it is, but it seems to coincide with what I sense in the air. Seeing it in the green gives a little peace of mind too, even if its more psychological. Form wise it looks good. It doesn't take up a lot of space and blends in nicely within the room. The taller square shape makes it easier to fit into just about any space. Also, it has a night mode that basically turns off all the lights so it's not lighting up your room when you don't want it to. It's not perfect though. When changing the fan speeds it does so slowly. Almost too slowly. Select a faster speed and it takes so long to get going you question whether its working for a moment. Not a big negative since it does get up to speed though. The bigger complaint I have though is the lack of a washable pre-filter. There's only one filter assembly in this unit and while it looks like it does have a pre-filter, it's not removable. What makes this really puzzling though is in the user guide under the list of features it clearly states: "Washable pre-filter removes large irritants such as hair and dander". Then further into the guide it states: "CAUTION: - Never wash the air filters." I get that you can't wash the main filter, that makes sense, but no further mention of this "washable pre-filter" anywhere else in the guide or that one is actually included. At least you can still technically pull the filter out and vacuum off any large hair/debris so it's not a deal breaker. Overall, this is actually a really good air purifier, especially for the price. Replacement filters aren't outrageously priced either and they're affordable. Given all that, even with the issue of this phantom washable pre-filter, I would still rate it a 5 and would recommend it to anyone needing an affordable air purifier.

We have the larger size for the living area of the home and decided to get this smaller size for bedroom. Unfortunately the sensor is all out of whack on the smaller unit. I will be returning this unit, if I can't trust the sensor why pay extra for a digital readout of the quality of air in the room. My photo shows the larger unit I brought into the bedroom to check the air after this smaller unit was registering such large numbers and not improving.

There are things in life that you don’t know you need, and this is one that I didn’t think I needed it. I thought I had a rather well-sealed home, only to find out that well-sealed does not mean dust free. The ultimate test for any air filter is the removal of smells, along with dust. On the day I got this, evidently “fish fry” that was the choice meal of the day at my home, and the smell of frying fish isn’t of faint heart. I turned on the air purifier, set it on auto, and let it run at high for a few hours, but within 20 minutes I could smell the difference, the air smelled better, the fishy smell was starting to reduce. After a few hours of running, there was no more evidence left. I had it in a slightly larger room than what was recommended by the device, but it handled it with no problems. I also noted on first turning it on, my indoor air quality was in the high 95 for PM2.5, after a few hours, it dropped down to an average of 10 for PM 2.5, and the air felt cleaner. The overall noise component of this machine is very low. At high fan speeds, it was averaging about 50 dB, which is a quiet home, and at low speeds, the sound meter captured it at 20 dB, which is very quiet, and hardly noticeable. This is a quiet air cleaner, that actually works. It is Energy Star Certified, with a clean air rate averaging 240 cubic feet a minute. I put it on the Kill-A-Watt and found it draws about 2.5W in low, 19W at medium and a whopping 40W at high when running. Given that it has a clean air rate of 240 cubic feet a minute, the system reduces fan speeds rather quickly as the numbers drop (if in auto mode). The device is also compatible with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Air Cleaner Regulations (required if it is to be sold in California) - which means it has been independently tested to make sure it meets the regulation (AB2276) for air cleaning devices - as it stands, this device does not add to the ozone in your home as its a mechanical air cleaner (with use of a HEPA filter). I love this device, I don’t know why it never crossed my mind to get one before. Sure, the central HVAC has a HEPA filter, but this does so much more in its compact form in cleaning the air. I found it easy and portable to move around, and it is easy to use. I am currently using it in my office and noticed my allergies are gone for the moment. At the next wind-driven ‘Santa ana’ event, this will be put to the real test, as my allergies get really bad. I like that the filter is easily replaceable, rated for 2000 hours of use, which in daily use is about 4 months or 8 hours of use per day, it would run about a year. The cost for a replacement filter is $30. The filter is supposedly washable and re-usable, but at the price, it’s easier to just put a new filter. Pros: Nice quiet effective HEPA filter for indoor air cleaning Stylish, reasonably energy efficient for 24x7 use (2.5w in Low Mode) Cons: Why haven’t you got one yet….

I really like and need this air purifier. I have COPD and live in Las Vegas, the giant dustbowl. When the wind picks up I would literally taste sand even while indoors.. Now I don't at all. When I would wake up I would be congested and have some blood in my tissue after blowing my nose. I don't get that anymore. In fact I am not even congested when I wake up. And what I have really noticed is that after cooking things that would normally smell up the house don't. At first you will smell something like the bacon. But usually within the hour the smells are gone. I hate returning to the house and as soon as you walk in you are reminded what of what you cooked earlier. And what is awesome is that I don't hear it at all. I have it on low fan auto. If there is a bad aroma say my dog blows my an air kiss I will hear the fan go higher briefly and it will show an increased number on the display. When the number goes back down I know it's safe to take my nose away from the pillow. I have purchased two. One for the living room and one for the bedroom. If I am not in the room I do not run it. The air is quickly cleaned when it is turned on so I can't see constantly running it. If you suffer from allergies or breathing issues I truly feel you will benefit from these Hepa filters.

POWERFUL – AFFORDABLE AIR CLEANER INSIGNIA - 380 SQ. FT. HEPA AIR PURIFIER - WHITE MODEL:NS-APMWH2 Best Buy Tech Insider Network REVIEW: My expectations were far exceeded by the affordable and powerful INSIGNIA - 380 SQ. FT. HEPA AIR PURIFIER. If this is representative of the current state of INSIGNIA products, then I will continue to take a closer look at the brand (Best Buy house brand). The only downside I could find was that it is a little loud on the highest setting. Since it is deigned for a larger room, it should not be too noticeable even on high, but certainly on low or automatic you probably won’t hear it over other everyday sounds. For cleaning the air, it does a great job. It was super easy to unbox and set up. Just pull off all the plastic (don’t forget the filter) and turn it on. The menus are easy to read, understand, and use. I like that there is an easy to see / read status on the device itself. I like and prefer that you don’t need a phone app to use the INSIGNIA - 380 SQ. FT. HEPA AIR PURIFIER. Maybe I’m a luddite, but not everything in the world needs to be online and remote controlled by your phone. GEEKY STUFF NOISE: I recorded audio at the highest setting and it was about 75 db (about the same as a vacuum). AIR CLEANING: After 24 hours in a 12x13 room the ppm 2.5 (fine particle parts per million) reading changed from 10 to 7. That is a 30% reduction as measured by a different meter than what is built into the unit. My TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) went from 136 to 5 ppm. PRO’s - Built in display meter - Large unit for higher airflow - Affordable and high quality RECOMMENDATION If you are looking for a powerful high quality affordable air cleaner, take a close look at INSIGNIA - 380 SQ. FT. HEPA AIR PURIFIER.

    Whisper Quiet Clean Air

So far the Insignia air purifier has been working great. It has a nice digital display with colored bars at both ends to show you at a glance what your air quality is. Green indicates "great", yellow "okay", orange is "bad" and red is "hazardous". The display also shows you the current PM 2.5 count. Most people are not aware of just how important this number is. Having a high PM 2.5 count can be detrimental to your health. Not only are the particles bad for people with allergies, but they can also affect people with lung or heart issues. There have even been actual studies showing that older people who live in areas of higher air pollution live shorter lives. PM 2.5 particles can damage heart tissue by inducing the inflammatory response, oxidative stress and intracellular free Ca2+ overload. These particles can also irritate the lungs, aggravate asthma and decrease lung function. Either way, this type of air pollution is something we want to limit, and a good air purifier is exactly the answer for better quality indoor air. PM 2.5 is particulate matter ranging in size of 2.5 micrometers or less. Obviously there are larger particles floating around in our air, but most of those can be combated with the body's natural defenses. The problem with particles 2.5 micrometers and less is that they can slip past those defenses and get absorbed by the alveoli and end up in our blood stream. Particle air pollution 2.5 microns or smaller is typically created by combustion. Which means cities and areas with abnormally high amounts of cars, and coal or natural gas power plants are going to have the highest numbers of air pollution. You can check your town or cities current air quality through a website called airnow .gov , the site sources live readings taken several times a day. Understanding the air quality outside your home can help you determine what is needed in your home. Aside from the outside air getting inside, PM 2.5 particles indoors can be formed and accumulate from cigarette smoke, candles, fireplaces and even cooking. A human hair is around 75 micrometers in diameter, dust (<PM10), pollen (<PM10), mold (<PM10), combustion particles (<PM2.5), organic compounds (<PM2.5), and metals are (<PM2.5). Most HEPA air purifiers can remove most of these pollutants. Even though they are not advertised to do so, HEPA filters will still remove most particles down to 0.3 microns, and are 99.97% effective at removing dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and other pollutants. HEPA filters are made from thin glass fibers and activated carbon. The Insignia air purifier also has a carbon filter, to help remove odors, smoke and other gaseous particles. I'm still waiting on a response from technical support about what type of technology is used in calculating the PM 2.5 counts, but it's most likely the same technique used by other manufacturers in which they use infrared light. Lasers and gas sensors are the other options for testing air quality, however they are typically more expensive so they are not as widely used. Infrared systems project a light onto a sensor, when particles pass through the light, it changes the amount of light read by the sensor. The changes in light are how the machines determine the PM 2.5 counts. The included air filter can be vacuumed or wiped down with a wet rag to remove large bits of debris and extend the filter life. There is a "Replace Filter" light that will illuminate when it is finally time to change out the older filter. I took a couple pictures of my air filter after a week of use, and the debris that I collected while wiping it down. Luckily we live in a pretty clean area, so I wasn't expecting a lot to be collected, but there was enough dust to cover a dime, after I had squished it all together. The purifier has 3 fan speeds, and an Auto mode. The unit is generally very quiet and I hardly ever notice that it's on, until it kicks up the fan speed. We leave ours set on Auto mode, so that the unit can automatically adjust to the pollution readings. There is also a timer, sleep mode and child lock. It's only been a week, and it looks like it's doing a good job. I have seen the fan kick up a few different times and the PM 2.5 numbers jump up to 50 a few times. I'm not exactly sure what it was picking up, but the cats were sitting very close to the purifier, so I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the cat litter dust. Either way, after a short period the PM 2.5 count dropped back down to 12. My son has allergies, and even he seemed to notice the air quality to be a little less of an irritant. Overall, I think this is a great air purifier. I am most likely going to get one for my basement, as the majority of the air recycled through my furnace comes from there. I love that this unit comes with an active display, I'm addicted to checking the number every day, and wondering what it was that slightly raised the numbers (possibly my cooking- lol), and thinking "good job filter" when the numbers drop back down to normal.

Living in an area of the country where pollen is a problem in the spring and being an allergy sufferer, an air purifier is a must. Insignia gives allergy sufferers on a budget an option that doesn’t break the bank. The unit has a nice LED display that shows the air quality on the front and touch controls on the top. It has 5 operating modes, night, low, medium, high or auto. Night mode is basically low without the display on and auto sets the fan speed based the on air quality. Testing auto mode with a candle, the air purifier almost instantly (within a few seconds of the candle being placed near it) recognized the change in air quality and changed the fan speed. When the fan is on low it’s whisper quite, quite enough to be placed next to a bed and not disturb your sleep. Another plus is the filters even when they’re not on sale are very reasonably priced. If you need an air purifier but are on a budget, Insignia delivers an excellent option.

We are a family with allergies, which is why we got a hypoallergenic dog with low dander. We have tried many air purifiers from low end models to high end ones with mixed results. Enter the Insignia HEPA air purifier for our needs, and wow, it really made a difference in our home. Set up was pretty simple (plug and play), with an LED display that dominates the top front. Insignia states it for 380 Sq. Ft, and our home is under 1600. We placed it in our downstairs living room/dining room that is around 500sq ft. We definitely have noticed a difference, especially my son who has the worst of it. Even the dog’s odor was gone after an hour of use. The filtered air shoots upward instead to the sides, so I know that the air would be distributed to the entire room. The LED display is pretty self explanatory at the top and the air quality is prominently displayed. I was able to change the settings such as speed (3 different speeds) and adjust the timer (hour increments of 1, 2, 4 and 8) from this display. There is also a child lock ability which prevents my son from tampering with it. The only cons to this air purifier is that on the low setting you can barely eat or feel it. When you get to the medium setting it becomes very noticeable and loud. There really isn’t a middle ground to the sound level. Overall, this is great air purifier and has worked out for all of our allergies.

I like the quietness the control panel the darkening of the panel at night. I like seeing the reading of particles on the panel. But honestly I don't know is that I saw any difference in room air. I bought this for my son's home in Cali. At my house I had two smaller units in my old dusty house I ran in my room. Those felt like fresher air. The insignia unit covers a big room over 300sqft my little ones together maybe equal that and I have a big room. So I don't know. Maybe my son will tell me how it does when the Santa Anna winds pull more particles into the house. Yes I did take the plastic off the filter.
