Excellent Compact Refrigerator
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The 4.4 Cu. Ft. “Mini Fridge” is not so mini; it is a tad larger than your run of the mill true mini refrigerators. Although Best Buy list this as a “Mini-Fridge”, the Insignia user manual describes it as “Compact Refrigerator”. (Over the years these have increased in size from the 1.x cu ft to 2.x, then 3.x, and now 4.x cu ft with some in the 5.x league pushing the “mini” moniker a tad past its limits.) Size wise the new smaller 3.3cf Insignia model has a similar height and width footprint, with this 4.4cf being 4-1/8” deeper. Not having a freezer section provides addition room for storing drinks and other non-frozen food products. Also, not having a freezer section should eliminate any requirements for shutting it down for the occasional manual freezer defrosting maintenance. Since most “mini fridges” freezers only accommodate a few frozen treats, and require occasional defrosting, I prefer not to have that feature. UNBOXING: This fridge in its shipping box was delivered to our garage. Three banding straps must be cut to be able to lift the box off of its base. Although there were thin Styrofoam panels surrounding the fridge, and sitting on a large Styrofoam with reinforced carboard base, the rear bottom corner was dented. (Contacted BB who contacted Insignia. Received an Insignia support phone call and I am more than satisfied with their generous offer to ship a replacement unit; although I did decline.) My wife and I were able to move the fridge from the garage to inside the house without much trouble. Once inside the house, there are numerous pieces of tape to remove from the interior supporting the shelving and door trays during shipping. And there is a rear foam shipping support between the compressor top and bottom of the plastic drip pan that should also be removed (the power cord is fished through the foam and will just pull out). LEVELING: There is only one adjusting foot on the bottom front left-hand side. In my current hard wood floor room, this fridge could not be adjusted to sit level, it would slightly rock. Now on the front bottom right-hand side, there is a lower plastic pin/hinge that is used to support the door when opened/closed. It is removable and can be loosened, but according the instructions, that is used for door reversal. But if loosened, it could act as a second adjustable foot that would assist with leveling. I was hesitant to use this pin as a second leveling foot, I thought loosening may cause other issues after repeated door opening and closing. To resolve the rocking, I ended up using a stick-on chair leg felt glide under the door pin/hinge. Bottom line: This fridge requires at least two dedicated leveling feet for some rooms. COOLING: Using the recommended cooling setting (middle of the rotating thermostat dial) it will cool to 36.1 degrees, cycle off, then cycle back on at 38.9 degrees. At maximum cooling setting (thermostat fully rotated clockwise), it will cool to 31.7 degrees, cycle off, then cycle back on at 37.4 degrees. This is a more than sufficient choice range for keeping liquids very cold and keeping most all non-frozen food products from spoiling during their recommended “use before date”. Because this fridge does not have an internal circulating fan, items placed in the rear will be colder than items in the front or on the door. (Measurements were from a Fluke 70-III DVM with a Fluke 80TK digital thermocouple module. Sensing probe placed in the center of the fridge filled with drink bottles and cans in a 70-degree room environment.) Note that all refrigerators, this one included, function most efficiently when being fairly full, where the items themselves not only assist, but once cold they play a major role with maintaining a consistent inside temperature. I mention this only for potential buyers to assess the proper size (Cu. Ft.) they truly require. An all the time half empty or less fridge is normally not the goal here. FEATURES: The three internal glass shelves are easily removable, but not adjustable, and that’s fine with me but may not be acceptable to others. The door has three clear plastic removable trays if removal is required. With the trick to get them out easily is to just lift up on either side, not both at the same time. There is plenty of room to store both drinks and food items of varying sizes. If you intend to store a gallon jug, I would suggest you remove the bottom shelf where there is still a small rear shelf area to store other items. And depending on the gallon jug, you may also need to remove the bottom door tray. Alternative door opening option if desired (hinged from the left side vs. the default right side.) Another unique feature is the interior light; sweet! NOISE: This fridge is fairly quiet, sort-of an electronic purring/ticking when it is running, although you do hear the compressor if there are no other background noises in the same location. Not a major concern for me, and it is quieter than many of the “honor bar fridges” I have used in hotel rooms. But my wife is not as pleased when it is running and she thinks it is a noisy. A sound meter app measures 35dB in front of the fridge when running, 38dB at the sides, with a maximum of 52dB in the rear directly at the compressor. The front 35dB and side 38dB readings are within the middle range for mini-fridge noise levels between 30dB to 47dB. RATING: I vacillated between a 3-Star and 4-Star rating for a few days due to the initial negatives I encountered. But after using for a week, and receiving a return support phone call, I believe a 5-Stars rating is rightfully earned. Primarily due to the impressive 32-degree cooling capabilities; I actually had to back off of the max setting a tad. While factoring in the glass shelves, interior light, and reversing door features that I consider a plus too. Overall, a “Very Good Job” Insignia! RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend to others after they assess their mini-refrigerator size requirements, verifying it will fit in their intended location, do not require adjustable shelves, and do not require a freezer section.

Two Units, Two Defectove Thermostats
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The thermostat of the first fridge that I received failed within 24 hours. I increased the thermostat and the appliance would not turn on. Unplugging the device did not help; turning the thermostat all of the way off resulted in a click and when the thermostat was rotated on again, the unit operated. Best Buy replaced the unit in six days (holiday weekend). The replacement was no better. I am used to an instant thermostat response during adjustment, with the unit turning on and off when the dial is rotated back and forth. This thermostat did not respond at all. Finally, when dialed to maximum cooling, two digital temperature transmitters verified that the refrigerator temperature would not go below a top shelf average cycle temperature of ~44°F (grey and dark blue lines pictured). Rather than potentially repeating the return process and receiving yet a third defective product, I had already prewired a $4 W3230 digital temperature controller (pictured mounted on insulation tiles) in parallel with the original mechanical thermostat. The historical plot shows a dramatic temperature drop at 8 hours when the digital thermostat was engaged. Now the average temperatures of the bottom (grey line) and top (dark blue line) shelves are ~36°F and ~40°F respectively, and I am assured that my very expensive medication is kept at the proper storage temperature.
