The cord in the middle allows flexibility to adjust. I use this with an extender for my laptop headphones, and you don't lose any of the noise or quality (at least noticeable). Very good product.

Nice sure engagement and fit of male 3.5mm into these couplers. Great for a variety of applications (i.e. extend length so you can place audio source and speakers where you want, extend distance between source and headphones, etc.). I bought two and have even used them to create an even longer audio line.
