However windowside ac units would make this pretty much useless if you run them.

We were also having work done in the house so didn't want unwanted particles flying in the air from that.

It's quiet up to the 3rd level, then it gets loud but it's really taking in and pushing out air through its huge, cylindrical filter (hard to find anywhere except on BB's website, of course, grrrr). As with other reviewers, if you smell the recirculated air coming out of the top, it does not smell very good...but maybe a new filter would help...or not. I do wish it had a UV light component internally.
