If you don't and at end of frying when you.pull it out, the whole thing can drop. Happened to me. It dropped to the floor and the basket bent.. Luckily, I did not get burned. I don't like, also, that it is very hard to set an exact time, in most cases. I do not recommend this product no matter how cheap they put it on sale. Sorry I bought it. Was a sucker for the sale.

Our first recipe, something happened with the timer knob, it stopped counting down, basically got stuck while the food kept cooking. By the time we realized it wasn't moving the food was burnt then started thinking how dangerous that could have been had we walked off. Other than that, it "would" have been fine. I can't return, or exchange because of the short time limit to return. Bought in January.
