The Insignia 0.7 Cu. Ft. Retro Compact Microwave is a-DOR-a-ble. It comes in a nice, soothing, and very retro chic mint color (though I would call it more aqua than mint). While my kitchen is not totally “retro” in style, I do have several appliances in the same aqua/mint color palette. It coordinates quite well with my other pieces. It also adds a bit of whimsy and fun into my kitchen. Currently, I have it sitting on top of a dorm-size refrigerator, and it fits perfectly. So, if you are shopping for a college student in your life, this would be a perfect gift. I ordered this to have as a spare for when my main 1.1 cubic ft. microwave is otherwise engaged. Frequently, my children pick that exact time to want a microwavable snack. Having a spare microwave, if you have the room for it, is nice to have for such situations. Another option would be if you wanted another small microwave on a different floor of your home from your kitchen, such as for a bar area or when you don’t want to leave the playroom to heat up your coffee. It is a fully featured microwave. You have Defrost, several preprogrammed functions for things like popcorn or potatoes, a non-cooking timer function, as well as a child lock feature. You can also use multi-stage cooking, and there is a fast cook feature which allows you to immediately cook for 30 seconds. You can cook for longer if you press the “Start/+30sec” button multiple times; the cooking time increases by 30 seconds with each press. Here is where my enthusiasm starts to wane, just a bit. The controls are simple, but not all together intuitive. For example, the timer. My inclination is to turn the dial right to set the time to cook, and for the timer to go from 0.00 and count up. That is not so with this unit. If you turn the dial to the right, you will get the preset options. To cook with a timer, you turn the knob left, and count down from 95.00 (minutes). If I had been involved in its design, I would have suggested having the dial be devoted to timer cooking. To access presets, I would have had the timer push in, or another small button that says “presets”, which allows the dial to then choose the appropriate programing. The other item I noticed when reviewing the instructions is that it offers a “turntable reset” function, but it doesn’t explain how to use it (photo attached). As for performance, I think it works just as well as my larger microwave. You may need to adjust your cooking times. My test run was making ramen noodles in the microwave (one of my children’s favorites, as well as a dorm staple). Normally, I would cook them in their microwave dish for 3 minutes on full power (P10) in the larger microwave. In this unit, I added 30 seconds to the cook time, and they came out perfectly. Other than the small design details that I mentioned, I feel this would be a great microwave for anyone and would make a great gift.

**Initial Impressions/Unboxing ** I am not going to try to make this any grander than it is; it's a microwave so the unboxing is as you'd expect. It is well packaged and everything felt secure when I was setting it up. You get a couple of manuals on how to use the microwave, and there is also a sticker on the door to tell you how to properly open the microwave (press the button at the top of the door handle.) Setting it up took a few minutes. **Look** This is exactly what I was looking for. I needed a small microwave to keep in my office, and I really liked the style and size of this when I saw it online. It looks better in person. It is small with a definite retro look. I love the mint color with silver accents. Everything has a nice round/curved look to it; especially the clock/time panel, and the window. This will look great in my office, or dorm. **Functionality** This has your basic microwave features. You get the defrost settings, the tray inside rotates, and you get the quick add 30 seconds feature. I will say you might want to take a look at the manual as it took me some trial and error to figure out how to use the knob properly. Turning it to the right cycles through the automated modes (ie. Popcorn), turning it to the left cycles through cooking time starting at 95 minutes, but quickly getting down to shorter times. Once I got used to the how the knob functioned, everything else was pretty straightforward. I do wish there was a way to make the knob just adjust time and not adjust automated modes. **Overall** This is a great, stylish little microwave. I love the retro aesthetic, and it is small enough to use in a small office, dorm, or apartment without taking up so much space. It is still large enough to reheat leftovers, make a microwaveable meal, or pop up some popcorn. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a stylish, compact microwave.

    – BUILD – The Insignia 0.7 Cu. Ft. Retro Compact Microwave is mostly constructed in metal with a clear coated Mint finish. The door handle is plastic as well as its buttons and main knob. The dimensions measure 17”Lx10”Hx11.5”D and is a bit hefty for its compact weight. Inside, you’ll find the carousel which consists of the carousel wheels and the clear plate. A good sized viewing glass enables you to see what you’re warming while the microwave is on. The main display is enough to display a digital clock, but shows other information as well. The chrome accents accompany the Mint color to give it that retro look. The microwave door is actually latched when closed and you must press a button hidden underneath the handle to open. The Insignia logo is presented at the bottom of the door to tell you where it comes from. – USAGE – The microwave allows you to use it in three different ways. The first way is to choose a cook time; as you can see, this microwave does not have any numbers for you to push, so you’ll either have to press the +30 button to start the microwave at 30 seconds, and press again to give yourself an additional 30 seconds. So basically if you need 2 minutes, you’d have to press the button 4 times. Similarly, you can choose a cook time by using the main dial rotated COUNTERCLOCKWISE. Time will present itself at 95 minutes and reduce down by 5 minutes at each turn; when down to 30 minutes, then time will reduce by 1 minute increments; when down to 10 minutes, then time is reduced by 30 second decremincrementsents..and finally when down to 1 minute, time is reduced by 5 increments. Knob turning speed does factor in how fast you want to get from 95 down to 5 seconds, so you’re not continually turning the knob to get down to 10 minutes, for example. The second way to use this microwave is to press the defrost button (press once for defrosting by weight in oz, twice for defrosting by time). Turning the knob adjusts each weight or time required for you to handle your defrost. Finally, there is the menu by using the main dial rotate CLOCKWISE. This will give you options A1-A9. Don’t know what A1-A9 is?? You’ll be able to see the decoder ring on the inside of the microwave so you won’t need to always have the manual on you. Each option has a corresponding measurement, which could be in ounces or cups. – PERFORMANCE – Right off the bat, the microwave is super quiet. It almost made me believe that it wasn’t doing anything. But I was definitely wrong. The 700W little engine that could was able to warm up my beverages, heat up cold food and get my instant oatmeal going with no issues. The best part about it was my food was evenly warmed up and there were no cold spots. I own a 1200W microwave that is supposed to be state-of-the-art and that thing can’t even warm up my food evenly. Kudos to Insignia for making this perform very well. – SAFEGUARDS and OTHER OPTIONS – If you’re like me and have children around, you’ll want to have this thing child locked because it is super easy to get this thing running with the push of a single button. Holding the Stop/Cancel button for 5 seconds will lock all buttons from any presses. Holding it down again for 5 seconds removes the lock. Finally, you can turn off the audible sound by holding the defrost button if you choose to do so. – COOKING SPACE – As designed, the microwave is 0.7 Cu. Ft. Which means you won’t be able to get a lot of stuff in there. So it’s up to you to decide if this is enough room for your normal warming needs. If you’re supplementing a larger microwave but in another room, then maybe all you need is 0.7. Interior dimensions are 11”Lx7”Hx10”D.

    Great Little Retro Microwave!

Overall this little microwave rocks. Love the vintage looks and love the green color. It was packaged well and safely. One complaint was the old fashioned styrofoam which gets everywhere! Yuck. I hope they can change the packing material to something more modern and environmentally friendly. But the microwave itself is great. It is 700 watts so I have learned to adjust my cooking times slightly as my regular microwave is 1000 watts. The rotation tray is super handy and helps to cook your food evenly. I use this mostly for breakfast sandwiches and warming up plates of food. It excels at both. My food came out evenly cooked and right on. The handle takes a bit of getting use to because you have to push up on a button underneath to open the door. The controls are easily laid out and easy to use. I like that it isn't so complicated and full of features I will never use. This does exactly what I need it to. This is great for the home, office, or the dorm. I've already had many compliments on the look and color of the unit and am happy to recommend it. Simply and effective. It's a great little microwave! Insignia built a winner here that I expect to last for many years.

I have ben using the microwave for a few days now, and have had plenty of time to mess with the settings and features in order to give it a decent assessment. This microwave is on the compact side at 0.7 ft3 capacity with an overall footprint of 17.25W x 14.25D x 10.25H in. Its power is rated at 700W, which is inline with other compact microwaves. The turntable is 10,” so it can accommodate most large dinner plates (my Corelle plates fit just fine). It fits fine on my countertop and doesn’t take up an egregious amount of space. The power cord is also plenty long enough at 40”. Specs aside the look of this microwave is pretty spot on for a retro inspiration. The mint color looks great and the overall design aesthetics work well. It could be considered cute looking. The clock display is large and easy to read. The handle has a trigger at the top that you need to squeeze to unlatch the door as you pull it open. The buttons on the front are multifunctional, and the same goes for the dial. I had to do some perusing of the manual to understand all the functions, but for the most part it’s pretty easy to remember. The Power Level button adjusts the power from 10-100%. Pressing the clock button lets you set a timer, while pressing and holding lets you set the clock. Both functions use the dial to adjust the times. Defrosting has its own button where one press causes it to ask the item weight, and it will set the time automatically. 2 Presses lets you set your defrost timing directly. Pressing and holding this button lets you mute the microwave beep, which is a welcome feature. This feature is reset if power is lost, which is understandable. The Stop/Cancel button is pretty self-explanatory for it’s use. If you hold it for a few seconds it sets the child lock, which locks out the dial and keypad until you press and hold the button again. A simple press of the Stop/Cancel turns off the display. The Start button either starts the time cook you have set, or from Standby will start the microwave and add 30 secs. During an ongoing cook cycle pressing the button adds 30 secs to the timer. The item is the dial which gets used to set cook time, timer, clock, defrost weight, and more. From standby turning the knob to the left kicks it over to time cook, and turning the knob to the right selects one of the preset modes. Turning to the left starts up time cook mode, but turning it just a little too far to the left starts counting the timer back from 95min. This is no big deal because you can just turn the knob back to the right to get the counter right back to 0. Each knob click adds 5 secs for the first minute and then 10 secs are added from 1-5 min. Beyond that it starts counting in intervals of 30 secs from 5-10min, 1min intervals for 10-30 min, and 5 min intervals from 30-95 mins. Turning the knob to the right at the start cycles through the 9 presets. Popcorn (A-1), Beverage (A-2), Fresh Vegetable (A-3), Meat (A-4), Pizza (A-5), Potato (A-6), Pasta (A-7), Soup (A-8), and Reheat (A-9). The “A” designation is all that is shown on the display, so you would have to memorize each preset or commit your most used ones to memory. Each preset has 3 (Pasta has 2) settings that correspond to the amount of the item being heated. Each preset has a different display value, which corresponds to the weight – 16oz of meat would use the 3rd meat preset (A-4) and the dial would be turned until the display says 16. The options for this particular setting are 9, 12, and 16. The way the time cook and presets are presented don’t make a whole lot of sense to me. This is the only part of the microwave operation I didn’t care for since it is unintuitive. I would have expected them functions to be flipped around – turning the knob to the right goes into time cook mode and you immediately start setting the time. No more “turn the knob left, then right” to get it going. I got used to it after a few cook cycles, but I wish it were the other way around. Also, the presets are not going to be easy to remember without the manual handy or printing out a cheat sheet with your presets written out. The “A” codes are the display don’t intuitively correlate to the settings in the chart. I can understand why this is done – likely to support multiple languages, which is a decent reason. Personally I would not use the presets as I tend to use the power level and time cook manually. It’s what I have been doing so for the 25 years I’ve had a microwave with buttons instead of the old dial timer. However, I can see still see it’s usefulness – the potato setting would be useful along with the beverage. It’s really going to come down to preference, and what you are used to. When I first saw this microwave, I thought it would make an awesome unit for a college kid or a someone in a small apartment with limited counter space. This is actually destined for our oldest child who is starting college in the fall. She can bring a microwave but is limited to something under 1.0ft3 and 800W, which this unit passes. The retro look and color scheme make for a cool looking design, and it is certainly sleeker than the microwave I had in school. The ability to mute the beep, and also turn off the display makes for a good addition to dorm life. No need to wake up your roommate when you want a late-night snack while studying. The operation of the microwave itself is also very quiet – the 700W power level I’m sure helps keep the noise down. I think this will be a great dorm microwave that hopefully lasts all through college.

This Insignia MINT color Retro Compact Microwave is probably heading to a college dorm and then to a first apartment. I don’t have any concern that it’s underpowered or too small because I know we under-utilize our current microwave oven. How much space do a couple of cups filled with soup, or potatoes being prepped, or broccoli needing steaming, and defrosted entrees truly need? It’s perfectly reasonable to trade excess power and size for convenience and efficiency. And, it’s not ordinary looking, is it? USEAGE: Great User Guide. Simple. Written by folks who actually used the Insignia .7CuFt Retro Microwave. And the functions make perfect sense after you accept a few quirks. Set the Clock, first, right after plugging in. It’s easier right then. My potato experiment using the presets was very easy, but not intuitive. A simplified table of settings is taped at the bottom of the microwave opening, but wear your glasses. While in the STANDBY Mode (the typical status) I rotated the ADJUSTMENT KNOB until A-6 appeared in the display window, and pressed START to confirm. I then returned to the ADJUSTMENT KNOB and dialed to the maximum “3” showed in the window, which indicated I had loaded 3 (actually I used 4) potatoes. I wasn’t going to worry about the extra potato until I saw this result. When cooking began the Insignia DISPLAY indicated cooking would proceed for 16 minutes. Testing my potatoes with a probe at end of cook, it was truly done. No other cooking needed. Direct cooking from the control panel is easy but not initially intuitive. In some ways it’s more sensible than some units we’ve owned. Press POWER LEVEL button repeatedly and choose from 100% to 10%. Press START to confirm. Dialing the ADJUSTMENT Knob elects the amount of time and added clicks add time in small increments. You get the hang of it quickly. You can adjust BEEPS, do two-stage cooking, mute the sound, defrost etc. This is a fully featured microwave that takes less space but probably adds seconds or minutes to some cooking jobs. It sure looks good doing it. This is a very satisfying cooking appliance that will make a lot of sense for many different living settings. Easy to Recommend.

Really nice design for this microwave and it works very well. Compact, so it saves space as well. I like this it's easy to switch the power level. Only complaint is that there is no numberpad to directly press a number for the heating time, but it's not a big deal because I got used to it quickly.

    Small But Mighty

I really like this small microwave. At 700 Watts it is low power (most prepared food instructions assume 1100 Watts), but it is super compact and actually performs pretty well. A standard microwave is about 1.1 cubic feet, this one is 0.7 cubic feet. And, darn it, the design is just plain old cool. This is an update to an older model - they look almost identical except for some small but good changes. The button labels are far clearer, and a latch was added to the door handle. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same machine. Usage is not intuitively obvious. Keep the manual handy. A right turn of the big knob changes the preset cooking modes, a left turn sets cooking time. It really should be the opposite - right turn and cooking time is set (currently you now have to turn left, then right to set a cook time). With the preset cooking, turn the dial, select the coded program, then press start, then turn dial to select weight, and then press start. It's a strange tap dance. There are a lot of double button presses to do things. The beep is all or nothing. Either it beeps for everything, key press, end of cycle, et al; or no sound at all (no sound for end of cook). The most important thing - it cooks rather well and evenly. Reheat worked like a champ, getting my pasta dish evenly warm. Frozen foods need an additional time compared to package instructions. The turntable just barely fits a standard dinner plate. There's a rubber standoff where the cord enters the rear of the machine. This is a great design choice, it prevents the microwave from pinching the electric cord. For a lot more money there are compact (higher wattage and larger interior capacity) much better performing microwaves with a just slightly larger footprint (Breville). This Insignia machine fits a very nice spot for tight spaces, at a really great price point.

This is a stylish and functional addition to my kitchen! This retro microwave is tiny and has a minty color that adds a pop that I just love! It's good for reheating leftovers, cooking frozen food, and making popcorn. I reheated my carne asada quesadilla and it evenly cooked all the way through using the reheat power. The microwave has 700 watts which is just about right for the size, but you won’t be cooking turkey from scratch and it doesn’t have the girth to fit one in anyway. Think small casseroles or cooking larger items at longer times with lower power to prevent burning on the outsides. I wasn’t originally a fan of the controls because I do prefer a number pad, but I got used to the dial. If you’re into dialing in quick cooking time, it’ll be easy and fast. If you like the quick buttons from the early 2000’s and so you might not like it, but you get used to it. I do wonder if the dial will be a failure point in the future because the plastic is so lightweight. The handle is child safe so remember to slide your hand up to unlatch the door. I actually struggled during the first several minutes of trying to open the microwave door. It’s hidden and might frustrate those that look at it straight on because it’s not immediately obvious. That’s a great feature for those with small kids. However, my kid figured it out right away so I guess that shows what I know! While it may not have all the bells and whistles of other microwaves, this one gets the job done and looks great doing it. It’s definitely a recommend if you need a compact retro microwave. It matches our kitchen walls, so for us, it’s a win!

This microwave matches my kitchen decor perfectly! I love the retro look! There is a slight learning curve when using this- Definitely check the instructions to find the full functionality. They use presets (A-1 is popcorn, etc.). I keep the manual nearby to check what is needed. I am not a fan of "presets" but did try the popcorn mode. I found it worked very well. I did stop it about 5 seconds before it finished but there were not many unpopped kernels and no burnt popcorn. It is easy to set the power level (even if you leave it at 10) and then use the dial to adjust the time by 10 second increments. If you can manage with 30 second increments, the dial can be used alone. This may seem like a small detail, but I do like that it gives you reminder beeps if it finishes and you don't remove the food. My last microwave did not do this and I would often find something in there the next day that had been forgotten! This is not a large microwave by any means. That is great for counter space. I have much more room in my tiny kitchen. The trade off is less space inside the microwave but I am not microwaving large dishes. My usual items are cups of liquid, small bowls etc.

It's a very cute and tiny microwave that you would expect to be only 700 watts. That's exactly what I expected. However, the buttons are not very intuitive. To set the timer, you have to turn left and it starts from 95 minutes. This is confusing because there is a button that literally says timer/clock on it. Very cute nostalgic design, but it's not ergonomically the best.

I love this little microwave--it's small and perfect for my small kitchen and has a nice look to it. Power is okay for my purposes of reheating food. For someone interested in stronger power I'd advise getting a bigger microwave.
