Great camera but with privacy concerns

I like how the camera works and the idea behind it however; no one has told me where the camera is storing all the recording when it detects motion. I called Insignia support and they said it is saving the recording/files on a random server. We do not know the security nature of this server, we do not know whether communication between the app and the server are secured or not and whether our files are encrypted or not. Worse of all it also does not allow us to delete any of the files in the App. This is a security and privacy concern.
Their support told me they do not allow deletion for security reasons. I wonder who's security and privacy is at risk here. It is like Google saying, we will not let you delete any of your emails for security reason. I am a systems administrator with 10+yrs in systems security and administration and I have never heard anything like this before for a consumer product. What are they doing with our data?
So if you have this camera in your home, know that it is recording your every moment and you cannot delete anything. Imagine a hacker hacks into their server all your private stuffs will be out there on the internet.
Secondly, why is the schedule not working? It will not make me select any device. Once again, their support says "Oh it is because the camera records when it detects motion so you don't need a schedule"
I think what they are not getting is, I have the camera installed in a meeting auditorium (Church) where 100+ people meet on specific days for meetings and other activities... why should the camera be recording everything when we do not need it? Why can't we determine when it should do something? This lack of control is why this product is a concern to me. So folks beware. They either tell us and fix the issue or this product should leave the market. I do care about the my privacy and I want control else there is no different between having Insignia spying on you and the NSA
I will edit my review if these concerns are taken care of

Hi! We truly appreciate your review and the comments you've made. We ensure you that customer privacy and data security has been a top priority on the Insignia Connect products, our application and the cloud service since launch. The camera transmits all the video files in encrypted format using secure communication; these files are then stored in an encrypted format and sent to our secure cloud. Viewing of these files, is only possible by the account holder using the login username and password and the SD card storage will only kick in, if there is a network outage. Keep in mind that these files are in an encrypted video format as well. In regards to deleting a clip, once the maximum number of recorded videos is reached (max number of clips depends on subscription plan on our cloud) the older clips are then automatically deleted one at a time as new clips are being captured. Manual deletion of a specific clip will be available on a future version of the app. To address your last question, please note that the Insignia Connect app also works with a line of Smart Plugs and Wall Switches and as a result, the schedule function applies to these devices and not the camera. Should you have any additional questions, please contact us at https://www.insigniaproducts.com/contact-us and any of our representatives will be more than happy to help. Could use a little work

Getting the camera setup was somewhat difficult. After messing with it for a while I figured out that the app will let you try to link the camera even without signing in to your bestbuy.com account. What you have to do is make sure you sign out of the connect app, and then sign back in to the app and proceed with setup after you do that. Once I did that setup was a breeze. The camera is located next to my WiFi router and we have 50Mbps down, 10Mbps up internet and the video quality is still somewhat lackluster. Lots of pixelation. The ability to send audio messages to the camera is pretty neat. Overall the app needs some work and the video quality could be improved a little bit. For being Insignia’s first WiFi camera of the sort it’s not bad; however there are a few other options similarly priced that might be worth investigating.

Camera great but app needs work

The camera itself is awesome. Great wide angle and good in low light. Love that I can talk through it and it has a built in SD card to save videos if my WiFi gets spotty.
The app won't let me turn off motion sensor (even when I do it switches itself back on) so its constantly notifying me while I'm at home. Also won't let me add it to a set schedule or save/delete videos. So I just have to keep it unplugged till I leave the house.
At some point I'm sure my video storage will reach capacity and stop saving new videos, because I can't delete the old ones.
If the app was working properly I would give it 5 stars. Please update! Using Android

I bought this to see my things while I'm at my office. Also I bought a fancy brand Wifi Cam in Amazon as well in the same day but this device is a true winner because it's stable and easy to setup. I return the fancy brand device to Amazon and I'm planning to add 1 more of this for my room.

Doesn't Set-up

Thinking this would be great to monitor the house when I'm on vacation I got this camera, against the myriad of bad reviews...but with Best Buy it pays to pay attention to the reviews because it literally is the worst camera. Cheap plastic quality, weird clicking sounds on set up, or attempt to set up I should say since the app detected the device (both on iOS and Android phones) yet the camera could never finish set up due to it never being able to find or connect to one of the 10 2.5Ghz wifi signals near it, both my own wifi or strangers wifi. It simply acted as if wifi didnt exist at all. So after a good hour of toying with it, trying to set it up, I realized I bought a paperweight with a magnet base and a proprietary USB cable (cable wont work with other devices and no other cable will work with this one, brilliantly locking you into Insignia replacements), so the camera is boxed back up and being returned to Best Buy. Lately quality of Insignia has gotten worse over the last few years and this product is no different, so save your money and buy something with high reviews, it will save you your time and efforts.

Conflicting/Lack of Information

Never took it out of the box. Installed the app first to check it out, app has information regarding plan requirements (Premium and Standard plans). Couldn't find any information on plans outside of app, Premium plan is included free for 30 days (then I guess the app will prompt you to pay). Package reads "Micro SD storage makes it easy to transfer files", but the Best Buy Insignia Connect Privacy Policy Supplement reads "These clips will be encrypted with keys specific to the camera."

Hi there,
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our Wi-Fi Camera. To answer your inquiries I want to start by explaining that the Premium Service is provided at no additional charge for one (1) month after the IP Camera is activated. After the first month Insignia Connect APP will prompt the end user to subscribe to the Premium Service or automatically switch to Standard Service. The Premium and Standard service plans including billing are managed inside the Insignia Connect APP.
Also, the micro SD card is used as a backup in case the Wi-Fi network or internet goes offline. Once Wi-Fi connectivity is resumed, the captured motion events are uploaded to the cloud and will be accessible in your app. All files on the card are encrypted for security and you cannot view captured files directly from the SD card only by signing in to the Insignia Connect app.

Purchased mine from online and was so happy at the discount price. THEN !!!! Nowhere in the ad did it say anything about having to create a bestbuy account to use it. I can't see who is outside my door until they have already have left. The system is so messed up because if having to store all images and clips "IN THEIR CLOUD, Not Mine" 10 minn. lag before notification? ONLY VIEWABLE ON MOBILE DEVICE WITH INTERNET? 4 hours to set them up, just to find out "I JUST GOT SCAMMED!!" I will never shop Best Buy again!!

Dear jimbobsloft,
Thank you for purchasing our Wi-Fi Camera. We are sorry to hear that you have had trouble getting it to work to your expectations. We have been working very hard over the past several weeks on improving our Insignia Connect IoT ecosystem reliability and performance, during which time we paused sales of this product, and have just recently begun selling it again as a result of the improvements we have been able to achieve. Significant improvements that we have made include the set-up process to get the camera up and running in a much more simple and timely manner and response time for motion notifications.
Also, your mobile device with the Insignia Connect App can receive notifications, view stored clips and view live images through either WiFi or LTE connections. Regarding the requirement of a Best Buy account for sign-on, as Insignia is a Best Buy owned brand, we opted to leverage the existing Best Buy security and privacy protocols and policies in an effort to deliver a very high level of protection to our customers. Thank you again for your purchase of our Insignia WiFi Camera. We hope you will give us another chance to earn your trust, and are committed to continually improving our products based on valuable feedback from customers such as yourself.
