Why so many in a pack?

I could only find this battery in a 12-pack. I will never use all these batteries before they just go dead in the package. Such a waste!

Received on 3 Jan 2019, free and fast, very impressed. Opened package and noted best-by-date on batteries: Jan 2019! Very disappointed. They must have been sitting for a long while. Definitely past their prime. Will be returning ASAP.
