    Polarity Matters

I've done a ton of research on this adapter and I am not going to purchase it. However, I thought it might be helpful to explain my findings for all of those who are wondering if this will work for you. Buried in other reviews is a mention that this cannot be used on devices with negative polarity. I have an old portable CD player and 2 portable cassette players (yes, I'm old), and one of the cassette players requires negative polarity. You can easily recognize this by looking at the symbol near the DC power input of your device. It's that barbell looking thing with a + and - on opposite ends. If the center "c" shape opens to the +, it's positive polarity. If the center "c" shape opens to the -, it's negative polarity. I found this text in the user guide (online .pdf) to confirm that this won't work for my cassette player with negative polarity: Compatibility Your device is compatible with this adapter if: • The correct tip is available • Your device’s voltage is between 3 and 12V DC • Your device’s input does not require more than 1300mA (1.3A) of current (or 2100mA (2.1A) for 5V connection). • Your device has a positive polarity My devices don't actually claim the necessary current, but if the voltage is right (3-12V in increments of 1.5V), the unit will draw the necessary current, but only up to the ratings shown. If your device requires more than 1300 milliAmps (except for the 5V exception), then this adapter will not work for you. I'm giving it 5 stars and recommending it because it probably works just fine for exactly the right devices. I just don't want to pay that much for an adapter which can't charge ALL my old electronics. I've seen AC adapters in the past which can change polarity, so I'll keep looking.

Works on my old external Hard Drive enclosure!

How old is my external HDD enclosure? Think: "CompUSA-old"... you know, back in the days when hard drives were still PATA/EiDE and not SATA. The model was a CompUSA HD-337, a beautiful, sleek aluminum HDD enclosure for my old, 500GB HDD drive. The stock power adapter died/fried and I was NOT going to spend more than $20 for a new solution, ie. a new HDD or a new HDD enclosure.... besides, the only ones they carried in-store are for SATA anyway - I needed a PATA-compatible solution. So I opted for this power adapter. Having tested all the other ones I have at home, they simply didn't provide either enough power nor the correct kind of polarity that my HDD enclosure required...... they only got the power LED working... but the disk itself wasn't spinning. On the other hand, this Insignia Power Adapter (1300Amp model WITH the USB port) supplies just enough juice to get my HDD enclosure working just fine again. PERFECT! The only thing I'm not cool with is how flimsy the metal prongs are... the ones that actually go into the wall outlet.... one wrong motion and it folds back into the adapter. Do NOT waste your time with the 600amp model (the one that does NOT come with the USB port).... be smart and plan ahead for future power needs. This one can supply more power than the cheaper model..... and if you need, you can dial-it down to a lesser power output for devices that don't require that much power. I should also note that I purchased this power adapter as an "Open Box" item..... everything shown in the picture, printed on the box was included, and it works just fine (2-days and counting).

    Does what I needed

I needed to replace the AC adapter for a cell phone microtower. The Insignia product is more expensive than the OEM part on Amazon, but I was able to get immediate gratification by purchasing it at Best Buy. The Insignia AC adapter is physically much larger than the OEM part. The plug orientation also mean the product annoyingly covers multiple spots on my power strip. When replacing an AC adapter, you need to consider the whether you need AC or DC output, output voltage, output current, whether plug polarity is positive or negative (on DC adapters), plug ID, plug OD. The on-line specifications for the product offer none of this information. The outside of the box only listed the first three pieces of information (output is DC only, voltage is user selectable between 3 and 12 V, and output current is up to 1300 mA). The instructions inside the box only added the polarity (tip of pin must be positive). The plug ID and OD was not specified anywhere.Although it worked for my situation, I had to remove the product from its sealed packaging and test fit it. Radio Shack was long my go-to place for this type of product, and they would have listed all of the information on the outside of the box so that you knew without opening it that everything would work. Since Insignia is a Best Buy house brand, there is no excuse for lack of technical information on a product like this.

I picked this up as I was in need of an adapter that could provide 5V at 2A, and the package indicated that this could. On opening the package, the first issue encountered is the device feels VERY cheap as mentioned in other reviews. Then you notice it says it only supports up to 1.3A or 1300mA. Turns out it only supports 2.1A if at 5V and 1.3A for all other voltages. Then when you try to connect the tips, you are faced with a molded indicator on the cord that says (TIP) as is common for these adapters, but polarized pins on the tip that prevent you from plugging in the tip as a positive (+) tip, it only works as negative. The included instructions, however, indicate the adapter is positive ONLY and that negative will not work. Another reviewer indicated that they tested with a multimeter and verified it is positive regardless of the indicator. Finally, even after all of this, I found that the 5V setting is only for the USB connection, so a 5V barrel connector cannot be used at all with this adapter. Overall, a very confusing and poorly made product.

    It works if...

It stood out to me not only because it was a universal power supply, but because it was rated at 1.3 amps and it had a USB connector. I later on found out that its polarity couldn't be reversed. I solved that by building my own adapter to plug on the end with the connections reversed. According to your website and PDF file, it's a positive tip. But looking at the marks on the connector, a "-" is inline with "TIP". Very confusing, I'm wondering if somebody messed up in the design. I suggest people take a voltmeter and double check the polarity before plugging it in. Just to be on the safe side and not blow anything.

I purchased this product and brought it home. As with most universal power supplies, you have an interchangable tip with + on one side and - on the other, and then the plug end of the wire has TIP written on it. The purpose being that you align + or - with tip to determine the polarity of the adapter end. However, this model's tips insert with two pins, one pin is larger than the other. This means that you cannot actually reverse the tip as intended due to a design flaw. I thought my product was defective and went to exchange it. I took a new one to customer service and asked to open and verify. It was manufactured the same. We checked a couple other boxes and found this to be true of everyone we looked at. The product is not manufactured correctly and cannot be used in + tip orientation (which excludes most electronic devices). This product needs pulled from the shelves and returned to the manufacturer as useless.

I really didn't know what I was looking for but that didn't stop the employees of Best Buy. They figured out what I was trying to say even though I really didn't know what I wanted. Got my adapter and it works great. Kudos to them. Sometimes when your elderly you get the rolled eyes and smirks but never, ever at Best Buy. That is the reason I keep coming back. Than the cashier was fantastic. Very friendly. She saw there was a line and took me in her line. Everyone at the store went above and beyond and a big thank you. It's really appreciated. That is why I went there la few months ago to buy a dryer.

The functionality of this switching power supply (as opposed to a transformer) has worked flawlessly so far. The voltage is variable from 1.5 volts DC - 12 volts DC, and it comes with several different sized, interchangeable tips for whatever given piece of equipment you're needing to power. The part that was very disappointing for me, and which makes this unit only SEMI-UNIVERSAL, is that the polarity cannot be switched. Therefore, it is very limiting on a variety of items. Some pieces are negative tipped, some are positive tipped. This unit can only be used on positive tipped pieces of equipment. MAJOR oversight, in my opinion.

AC Adapter Great - USB Port? Not!

I got this to power my son's little electric piano so I would not have to buy batteries for it. This item fit the bill for that; giving me an AC Adapter alternative. The tips and voltage selector work great for dialing this thing in. I also bought this because it advertises I high power (read - fast charging) USB Port. I thought, "cool - that's always handy." NOT! The USB Port does not work. I tried multiple devices and returned this and got a second AC Adapter - which does the same thing - no power on the USB port. So, AC Adapter need? You are good to go. But do not plan on using the USB.

When my wifi router's original A/C adapter failed, which in turned caused all heck to break out in the house, the whole family was going to revolt! All I knew to do was to run to Best Buy for something, not knowing what to buy. This product was the answer. Thankful to find a power supply with in the hour of the problem, I returned home to what looked like a scene from Lord of the Flies, I placed the correct end plug fitting in the router and all was well. Thus forever being known to the family as the day the wifi died, and I was able to save the family from wifi disparity. TL;DR: it works very compatible with a range of products. Will save family.

The usual system to reverse polarity of the tip of each connector from negative to positive polarity appears to be unusable in this product because of a manufacturing / design defect. In both Best Buy and in other stores I checked, the male pins on the adapters in the kit are of different diameters as are the female socket connectors on the lead from the wall power adapter -- meaning NONE of the adapters supplied in the kit could easily be reversed in their corresponding sockets hence the polarity of the tip could not be changed from negative to positive as specified in the instructions and as needed in this product!

This was purchased when I needed a specific charger before a long road trip with 4 kids. We'd lost the one for a portable DVD player - so this fit the bill - and was the only one in the store that would fit the player we had. Problem is - every bump or jiggle shakes/knocks loose the adapter piece that attached to the charger. Result: the DVD player constantly coming unplugged from the charger - upset kids in middle of movie. Also the little adapter fell out on the floor twice which resulted in emptying the floor and flipping seats to locate it. ' Would not buy again unless it was an emergency. Either going back to store or I'm taping the two pieces together with electrical tape to try to stop the constant disconnect.

I bought this adapter hoping it could fill in for all the various power cords that had gone missing for random pieces of electronic gear I have acquired over the years. It didn't quite have the voltage or amperage ratings I needed, however. Otherwise, an ok item at the price; the plugs are a little more difficult than one would like to get on and off, you'll often accidentally overshoot the voltage you're trying to select because of how hard the switch is to move. But, it works, and if you've got a lot of random things you've lost the cords to, this may help you revive them.

After reading other reviews, I bought this adaptor set to hopefully save a special LED clamp-on lamp. I loved the lamp because the lamp never gets hot. In my work travels, the flimsy chord to the lamp got damaged. That was about 6 or 7 years ago. I looked and looked at adapters and almost threw the lamp out - feeling I would never find a solution. I had paid $80.00 for the lamp and did not see any like it still being sold - however the reviews on this adapter convinced me there was hope. Other reviewers had found that older equipment could be used again with this adapter set. Indeed, I have succeeded in restoring my lamp again! $15.00 was a small price to pay to fix my favorite lamp.

I bought this to replace a damaged power cord on a small headphone amplifier unit. As it is "compatible with most devices" I figured I should be all set. Wrong. This device is only for certain polarity setups (internal positive I believe) and it doesn't tell you that until AFTER you open it. My device was the reverse polarity, and it has no polarity switch button on it (which it should) making it useless to me. If had said it had a set polarity on the box then I would have at least known and would have checked more closely.

I wanted to hook up a portable computer fan for my desk but it did not have a plug. I knew how much voltage and current I needed but how was I gonna find the right power cord? I explained this to a Best Buy Employee and he said hold up and brought to the check out right to me the Insignia™ - AC Adapter - Black and said this will cover me. I was not sure at first with the $20 price because it seemed to have a fix for everything, but I found the connection I needed and it worked perfectly. What's even nicer is it has a little blue light which tells me it's working (not to mention pretty). It did the job, and I'd buy it again because of the flexibility it offers. One fix and done.

If you are anything like me, then you have a bunch of gadgets laying around with no power source / cord. I got this for a cheap diffuser that I had laying around for like a year. I was always waiting till I found an extra power cord, etc. Then I saw this on sale (and open box) and it works great! It has like 10 different plug ins to fit with a variety of device sizes. the only issue is that you can control the power (amps I guess), but I do not know what to set it at! Still great to have laying around just in case.

I needed an adaptor for my Airport Extreme as the power cord died. Turns out it takes a somewhat regular power connection, which I temporarily fixed by borrowing one of our hard drive's power cables, but I obviously needed a permanent fix. This one from Best Buy has been running it for a few months now. I only needed the one bit from it, but I'm glad they had it in the store, and at a pretty good price too. The sales guy was awesome and opened it for me so we could compare and be pretty sure it would work. Their return policy is awesome, so even if it didn't end up working, I wouldn't have been out.

I bought this for a reason. I had an adapter that I bought a long time ago at Radio Shack, but for some reason I misplaced it. I recently bought a portable radio that requires batteries but the battery life is not great. I needed an adapter to use in case I don't have any batteries to use on the radio. So I bought this adapter at Best Buy. It was what I needed. I'm going to try my best to not lose this adapter.

My husband accidentally packed the wrong adapter to plug into his coloculear receiver charger. We were in OH attending a dear friends funeral, and he was scheduled to fly home the next day. Without a way to charge his device, he would have been unable to hear anything at the airport, and I was afraid he would have been unable to get to his flight. Thankfully the adapter worked and he was able to travel home without me. I was staying several days longer. Thanks to Best Buy and an employee who helped us find the right adapter.
