Keeping my 1978 Zenith R472 in the game!

For years without need for an external antenna I’ve been running a 1978 Zenith R472 solid state clock radio… the circle of sound is just just soooo good and I have not, WILL NOT give up on my analog audio media formats. When I moved in with my fiancée to her arguably better built apartment in a town with arguably terrible FM signal transmission I had no choice but to get a powered high gain antenna for the Zenith. I could only get remotely clear signals on 3-4 stations that I didn’t like in the apartment! No more. This products works as advertised! Now I can listen to my favorite stations blasting through the crystal clear classic Zenith Circle of Sound just like before. Easy to set up and works wonderfully.

Easy to set up, nice looking, and unobtrusive. Draws in many FM signals that we were unable to receive before installing this product.

Greatly Improved FM Reception

Our stereo predates the internet by a couple decades. That's ok. I prefer expansive analog recordings to compressed digital media. But I really need good FM reception to listen to anything recorded since I quit buying records 30 years ago. Streaming digital media just isn't a viable option. We recently moved. At the new house, I couldn't pull in a single AM or FM signal clear enough to listen to without wincing. The long wire dipole antenna that worked fine everywhere else was worthless. The reception was so bad, I suspected the movers had damaged the tuner. I bought this antenna with low expectations. Pleasant surprise-- crystal clear reception of all local FM stations was immediately restored. The signal is clear whether the antenna amplifier is plugged in or not, although the amplifier in does boost the signal strength of weaker stations with no appreciable adverse effects. I didn't even bother with trying to find the best antenna placement. I just attached the leads to the receiver and tossed it inside the cabinet that houses the receiver. It didn't do much to improve AM reception and it didn't pull in distant FM stations. But it really cleaned up local FM broadcasts. That's all I needed and far more than I expected. I'd recommend this without hesitation to a friend living in an urban/ suburban area.

In my bedroom I had installed a ONKYO AM/FM CD Stereo & Receiver to my tv, so that I would have the speakers added to my tv. I am a senior with a hearing problem. It was a big improvement in sound for my tv, but I had bad reception for the FM Stereo, I couldn’t get many stations that I wanted, and some would be weak. I didn’t want to keep moving around the stereo system to find a better signal. The unit was placed exactly were I needed it to be. I always buy my electronics from Best Buy, and went on the internet to look for a better antenna for my stereo system. I lucked out that Best Buy had the amplified AM/FM Insignia in stock. It was inexpensive and I thought that it should be better then the one connecting to my stereo now. I just took it out of the box, read directions and installed it. I couldn’t believe the difference it made. I could now receive ALL the stereo channels that I wanted, and what surprised me the most was that I also got a better reception for my speakers on the tv. With my hearing problem, I had the tv on captions, but with the Insignia Antenna on my stereo receiver I could hear everything much clearer now. For an inexpensive antenna, I was able to get All my FM channels And better reception for my speakers hooked up to my tv.

OK, not everyone has a classic state of the art stereo tuner; but I hooked this up to my 35 year old tuner, and then to my 3 year old Yamaha receiver FM section...I was not impressed..in fact, my two pieces of speaker wire strung to the window gave me as good a signal as when this unit was powered up. I am sure it is intended for unrban use, where there are numerous close transmitters...I was tuning in stations from 25 to 75 miles away and this unit did ok with the closer of the two; and the further distance the worse it was. Buy this for urban use only; not intended to be out in the rural country side. Its an ok unit for what I paid for it.

AM/FM station reception is different from place to place. With my location, FM comes in very strong without any extra help. AM, on the other hand is best during the day but craps out at night time. For my best results, I have attached the supplied twin lead coax that was intended for FM to the radio on the AM connections. Then extend it as far as possible. Then I attached the AM wire to the back of the Amplifier. Plus some additional 6 feet of speaker wire to the end of that. Move the wire in several directions until your reception improves. Moving the wire 6" could cause a big improvement or make the reception go away completely. Good luck.

It works! I could not get any radio stations and with this positioned in a closet in middle of my house I can now get stations on both AM and FM. I would like to try it in the attic or near a window to see if I get more stations. Now I get the stations I want.

Nice little Antenna. The led light confirms that it is powered up. It works nicely on the FM side, but AM side does not work that well. I tried turning it to face direction of signal and it helps but still a lot of static. Fortunately, I do not listed often to an AM station. The unit comes with a threaded coax connector, but my radio requires a push on coax connector, so you might have go out a buy an adaptor.

I bought this amplified antenna with the expectation that it would improve our am and fm reception for our Bose Lifestyle system. Although much more compact than the fm antenna that was supplied with the Bose system, the best reception with the new antenna was no improvement over either of the original non amplified am or the fm antennas. In fact, am was worse (went from three weak to one static filled station) and fm slightly worse the original antennas, Tried a myriad of locations and directions with the new antenna with a wide range of results none of which was better than the original Bose provided antennas.

I had an older FM antenna and it just wasn’t working after moving my stereo downstairs. This new one isn’t perfect, but I definitely have gained about 15 channels. AM comes in really well.

NOTE - this item is likely no longer available as it has gone into clearance. But it is available in an updated format as Best Buy Essentials (Insignia as a Best Buy brand is being phased out). To help give better reception to your AM/FM radio, this really will make a difference. Because I like listening to local radio, this device came in handy. But when you purchase, check that all items are included in the box.

A powered antenna is a must-have. This one tripled the number of FM stations my new receiver can play versus the default antenna wire the receiver came with. Many stations still have hiss and static, though my receiver's speakers do exhibit true high fidelity and dynamic range. I play FM up loud when working around the house.

Wow! Yes this works way better than the old T wire. Picks up most of the stations that I can get on my car radio. AM and FM.
Got it for Christmas but just got a chance to hook it up. Two thumbs up.

This item may actually work reasonably well. However, I had to return it to the store because it did not help the reception of two older AM/FM receivers. In fairness to the product, its intended use was in the center of a basement away from any windows. Perhaps no reasonably priced antenna could have helped in this situation.

Hooked on Bose radio FM signal increased and picked up 2 more stations. BAD for AM too much distortion signal and didn't really pickup gainof the AM side even for stations 60 miles away. Can get better AM signal by running 25ft single strand of cooper wire out th door. If your looking to increase AM Do Not Buy This

Purchased this to listen to news radio in the house. It works but expected better reception since it is a boosted item with power supply.
When placed higher up near the window as is typical of an antenna, reception is clearer, but that is not practical. It does its job for news radio.

I bought this amplified antenna for a friend who was having trouble receiving his favorite FM radio station on his receiver. The amplified antenna worked, but a dipole made from 300 ohm twin lead worked better. Therefore I returned the antenna for a full refund. Try it, it might work for you.

You have to move it around to find the sweet spot. Once found it works great.
4 stars because the cord should be longer to give you more placement options.
