It can be used with either the black or brown side up. I have the black side up with the brown side on the desk and the pad doesn't move. This setup is significantly better for me than a small mouse pad or my desk alone. It took about 5 days for the pad to completely flatten sonce it's rolled up in the packaging. Very satisfied and pleased to get away from my small mousepad, no more falling off the edge during gaming or scrolling.
