I tried a "universal" remote that I had but it acted flakey. Since we have a couple of viewing positions for the TV, having another remote is very handy. The only difference I could see is the image on the voice control button. The original had a circle, this one has a microphone (actually more logical). And set-up was as easy as pointing the remote at the TV, pressing the "action" button and clicking on the "Pair" icon.
