Dedicated hardware. There are many devices with HDMI audio out as one of the functions. I have test a number of devices and the audio will cut out, distort, and/or not initialize. Failures are not an option for my live production needs. This unit is "jack of one trade and a master of it".

So, not sure if I did not hook it up correctly, or if I just didn't need it. I was finally able to just hook the system up using a new digital optical cable,
