It has saved my AirPods from a few falls but I've got one big problem with it. After about 2-3 months of use the, glue used to keep the case on the AirPods starts to fail. Hanging it off your hip or bag now becomes a gamble if the AirPods are going to fly out of the bottom half of the case. I've personally almost lost my AirPods after seeing they fell out the case during a hike.
