Not exceptional but worth a look

Not only is it something you'll look at and touch a hundred times a day, it also must protect your magical pocket computer from scratches and drops without falling apart too quickly. It's a lot to ask of a thin piece of plastic. Insignia has a full line of cases out for the latest iPhones and I was interested in trying their version of the ubiquitous silicone case. It arrived in simple, sturdy packaging with no plastic wrap (yay) and was on my phone in seconds. I immediately noted the tight, accurate fit, which not all case makers get right. Insignia took a minimalist approach with this case; there's no external branding, no contrasting colors or cut-outs for the Apple logo, just a plain black case. I appreciate the simplicity and especially the lack of branding. The internal felt lining with Insignia logo is a nice touch, though. I'm pleased to say the MagSafe capabilities of this case are great. The magnets are very strong and held my wallet and grip attachments without issue. The case also snaps easily to my various chargers and I had no issues charging through the case. Where I'm a little let down is with the construction details. I was hoping this would be a delightfully smooth, soft "liquid" silicone case, but that's not the case. It's a mildly soft, mostly smooth coating that maintains a good amount of grip. It's not as luxurious as some of the other silicone cases on the market, but for the price it's alright. My bigger issues are with the sides of the case. The buttons are responsive, but they're just plain molded silicone -- no smooth metal or special touches here. There's also a very obvious plastic molding line all around the edges of the case that you can feel as well as see. It takes the case down a notch for me. Finally, the cutout for the camera control button gives good access but the top edge near the screen is very thin and flexible, something I noticed immediately. I would have preferred a bit sturdier cutout as I don't think it would be hard to snag this edge and tear it. Overall Insignia has put together a solid, if somewhat unremarkable, silicone case. I like the zero-branding and minimal black look, but I'm put off by the molding lines and cheap-feeling buttons and camera control cutout. That said, the case is grippy and has a very strong MagSafe magnet. All told, this case is definitely worth a look, and might work out great for you depending on your priorities.
