Apparently does not work with all USB Type-C ports

After I plugged the USB Type-C-to-HDMI Adapter to my USB Type-C jack, I got a message on the lower left of my screen that said "Only certain computer models with Type C ports allow the display to be projected to a different screen and it needs to have a USB Type C Thunderbolt Port", which I guess I don't have since when I tried to set my computer up for two monitors, the monitor that was plugged into the USB Type C was not recognized. Will return it and order an HDMI adapter with a regular USB and hope that it works. I imagine that it would work fine if I had a Thunderbolt Port. I didn't want to give it a "yes or no" for "I would recommend this to a friend recommendation" since it only didn't work because I just didn't have the right type of USB port. However, I wasn't allowed to post the review unless I ticked yes or no. So I answered no.

    Poor option for dual monitors

This INSIGNIA USB-C to HDMI adapter really does suck. I just purchased two 24" Samsung IPS displays. I hooked them up via HDMI only and they both work flawlessly. I hooked up 1 monitor via HDMI and the 2nd with HDMI to USB-C. This initially sucked horribly... I had the settings correct on the machine, however, the 2nd display with the USB-C to HDMI connected was flickering and going in and out constantly and rapidly. I returned it to BestBuy and got the second one only to find that the same issue happens it's just delayed for a much longer period of time. The products are all compatible and function wonderfully, the issue here is the INSIGNIA adapter. Don't buy this. I am having issues with it as I am writing this review...

    DOA Useless dongle

    Posted
    TXFeller

Was sold this converter by a Best Buy salesperson after 20 minutes of discussing my remote office needs. Bought as part of a laptop purchase for 2 external VGA monitors and 2 external HDMI monitors. Purchase of laptop was contingent on getting my external monitors to work; REALLY IMPORTANT. Put this to use 10 days after purchase only to get repeated pop-ups from Win-10 telling me it doesn't support the "the correct Alternate Mode" whatever that is. No drivers, no nothing, just a dongle that cannot work with the laptop I bought and now I'm out the price if a laptop because it cannot do what the salesperson said it would do in combination with this dongle. Seriously ticked off at BB.

    Doesn't work for smartphones

Bought this to work as a dongle for my smartphone to TV connection because certain apps wouldn't mirror from phone to TV screen. However on the packaging it recommends the computer software required, that should have been my 2nd red flag. The first being that it was an open package. Clearly someone before me tried and failed as well. The product is inline with smartphone accessories, (at least when I purchased 2 months ago) however does not work with smartphones.

    An Unfortunate Necessity

This Dongle is great. It functions just as it should and that's the reason for my five stars. The reason for the wording in the Review Summary Title is that it is very annoying to me that Laptop Designers are so distracted with the unfunctional feature of THIN-THIN-THIN in their designs that they've made me buy $70 worth of dongles for my $1500 Laptop just to get back the needed HDMI, LAN and USB ports that came standard on the 6 year old Laptop it replaced. In some ways we are going backwards.

Box advertises Windows 10 works -- it does not

Notice that on the box under system requirements, Windows 10 and other Windows versions are supported. Notice on the website it says only Apple and Chrome are supported. Why didn't the best buy in store staff erase the false claim that it works under windows 10. It does not, as the website for this product notes. I was a poor store shopper that made a special trip all the way to get this thing, climb through all the wires to install it... then windows explains it won't work and to get a different adapter cable. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT WITH WINDOWS 10 -- IGNORE THE FALSE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ON THE BOX.

    Doesn't work with Lenovo Yoga

I have 3 major reasons for using a laptop. One is for email, the second is for some graphics production (using Canvas), the third is to hook up to the digital projectors at Colorado School of Mines for lectures (using powerpoint). I was assured by 2 Best Buy techs that the Insignia USB Type-C-to-HDMI Adapter or Type-C-to-VGA Adapter would work for my new Lenovo Yoga. Neither do! And I had 3 AV/IT people from CSM trying to figure out why not. My old HP laptop had both VGA and HDMI outlets that connected to the projectors with no problem at all.

I bought this to connect my Galaxy note 9 to my new Insignia 4k Fire TV since it indicated it was rated for 4k. It did not work. No picture and no sound. I tried the $7.00 adapter and a regular hdmi cable and it worked just fine. To be fair, it was an open box item, but it did not work. Maybe a brand new one would have worked just fine, but I decided to stick with what I had. It may work just fine for someone else, just not for me.

I recently purchased a Mcbook Pro with the Touchbar. The unit only has USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 on it, so I purchased 2 of these adapters to hook up to 2 monitors. Not only did they not display my screen on my additional monitors, they caused my computer to lock up and require me to force shut them down. I returned them and bought 2 more to see if maybe I had just received bad cables, but so was not the case, as the new cables did the exact same thing.

I bought this adapter to work with my new 2017 MacBook Pro and my LG 4K monitor. Although the adapter is advertised to support 4K resolutions, it was EXTREMELY laggy with my mouse, and took a good 3 minutes to connect my computer to the monitor. I believe these adapters only support 4K at 30hz. I ended buying an adapter off of Amazon for $25 that's supported 4K at 60hz, and it is great. Would definetly suggest Amazon over this adapter.

Works brilliantly with my new laptop that does not have either VGA or HDMI outputs (keeps it nice and thin but doesn't help much when you are road-warrioring it). I didn't get to really test it out prior to the first time I really needed it but I plugged it in and then hooked in the HDMI cable from the projector on site and it worked just as it should. My only complaint is that these dongles are a tad pricey, though for the most part this one should take care of me.

Overall an okay connector. Material quality is good and connection is tight, but sometimes it will take a few plug/unplug cycles to get the resution to recognize. Using an ultra wide monitor (2160x1080) this adapter causes the resultion to be recognized as 720 on the first try... it works eventually but can be frustrating. It works much smoother with more standard sizes and had no issue recognizing a 4K tv. I would recommend this product with some hesitation based on what your use might

Apple made a bad move going to all USB-C

The new MaacBook Pros only come with USB-C ports which means that once again none of your expensive Apple connectors and cables will work with your new machine. If you buy them from Apple you will have at least $100 in additional costs above the $2500 for the computer right off the bat. If you have a thunderbolt Monitor you can forget about using it until Apple or a 3rd party come out with a USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter. This adapter works ok but external keyboards experience a lot of latency.

I used this product for about a month to connect a 4k Samsung monitor to my Dell XPS laptop. I was concerned about how hot it got, but it seemed to work. It was not long until my screen would flash and flicker and I would have to unplug the device until it cooled off. This went on for some time with the periods of flickering starting sooner and the monitor being disconnected more than connected. Now when I plug it in it works for about 2 minutes.

I recently got a new laptop, and though it's nice, light, and cutting-edge tech, it has 3 USB-C ports but no legacy USB ports. With this adapter though I'm still able to use my array of previous-generation USB devices -- flash drives, external hard drives, network adapters, phone cables, data-sync, etc. USB-C is nice, but when living in the reality of a mixed-USB world, these save the day and ease the transition to USB-C.

I bought a new chromebook that only has usb-c and I needed a new adapter to use my chromebook while teaching. I bought this product and it works as advertised. However, the product is overpriced compared to what is available on other websites. If you do not mind the price or need an adapter right away (like me), this product works well. If you have time to wait, do a little research.

While I was able to use the HDMI adaptor, I lost a USB-C port - which I needed. My fault, I suppose. There is another adaptor which has both a HDMI port and a USB-C port which allows you to gain a HDMI port without losing the USB-C port on your computer. Buy the latter, if possible.

While I have not used this adapter yet, it easily fits inside my toolbag, a Michaels plastic bead container with handles....yes, that beats a toolbox for storing cables and screwdrivers! I probably won't ever need it, since I use a MacBook Air rather than a MacBook, but if I ever need to diagnose a MacBook screen, I will be prepared. Plus, it could be handy for adding an extra screen to a MacBook.
