Requires strong 2.4Hz band WiFi & Apple Home App

This device works with Apple Home App. You can open, close or check to see if open or closed. One day we left and couldn’t remember if we closed garage and next day BB offered this as Deal of the day. Got mine for $54.99. Had a lot of issues initially requiring me to climb a ladder to hook back up to WiFi. I was ready to give up and swap out with new one since I purchase 2 year Geek Squad warranty. Turned out the culprit was a weak battery in door sensor even though it was brand new. Swapped out battery and no issues since even when Broadband has an outage, pairs right back up. Has alerts to let you know when opened or closed if you want. You can open remotely thru Apple Home App if needed. Has 5 second flashing and beeping warning when you use Apple Home App to close. Made a Smart garage door out of old Sears garage door opener vs replacing that with Smart one.

    Great, Inexpensive HomeKit Device

This is a great, inexpensive HomeKit device. I replaced my Chamberlain/Liftmaster myQ devices with this Insignia device. It connects easily and works seamlessly with HomeKit. The myQ device I had was horrible. It would randomly falsely indicate the garage door was be open or closed. It would also randomly open my garage door, and wouldn’t allow the door to be closed without doing it from the garage. A few times I had to call my neighbors to close the garage door for me while I was away. I definitely recommend the Insignia over myQ.

Garage door sensor/opener for Apple HomeKit

We have three of these for out garage doors. They were a challenge to setup as our Mesh Wi-Fi uses the same ssid for 2.4 Ghz as the 5 Ghz. Disabling the 5 Ghz during setup solved the problem. What a pain that they didn't give you a way to connect your device to Wi-Fi without having to reconfigure your network temporarily. Once it is setup, the sensor works great for letting you know when the garage door has been opened. You can view the status and open or close it through the Home app on Apple iPad or iPhones. I wish it had an app for Windows, Google Home and Alexa as well but alas, it only appears to work with iDevices at this time. Our primary platform for controlling our home is HomeKit so this isn't a big issue for us, just an inconvenience.

Simplest solution if you use iOS home app...

I love the simplicity. No new automation accounts, no new hubs, no new apps to install. Installation was easy if you can use a ladder and a screwdriver. It was added to my network with no configuration using the Home app and using the camera to scan the ID number. It wires directly to the opener so there are no garage codes to learn and store. Sometimes it takes a small amount of time to update status and you need an Apple TV, Home Pod, or powered iPad to act as a hub for control when you are out of the house.

first off MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN AMAZING WIFI SIGNAL WHERE YOU ARE INSTALLING. my phone was getting 2 bars at the outlet I planned on putting it in. the gadget wasn't getting anything. I ended up putting an old access point in a basement window. basic wiring to install. setup in my phone pretty easy. major flaw is it only works with apple. it'd be nice to ask my Google home to open it up as I'm walking out the door. to be fair it says in the name of the product "for Apple homekit" anyhow it is awesome for the money and works as advertised.

Easy way to add HomeKit to existing garage

Great way to add HomeKit control to an existing garage door. Works well and easy to install. Only issue is the battery for the door sensor lasted about 6 months. No low battery warning, just the door stopped updating its status since it didn’t know if it was open or closed. Purchase some extra CR2450 batteries so you have it on hand. It’s a shame a battery with a higher capacity wasn’t chosen. I would have been fine with a bigger door sensor so that a bigger battery such as the CR123A.

I can’t say 5 stars. It does have intermittent issues. BUT. It does work. When attaching the sensor to my garage, I put a piece of 2” wood under it to give it space from the metal and that seems to have solved most of the issues. It still has a hard time responding, but that’s less of a problem since I did the wood trick. It’s good, it’s inexpensive. And it works. I would probably suggest putting a wifi extender as close to your garage as possible too.

The device was really easy to set up and to get it working. Once set up on the HomeKit, it works reliably 100% of the time. However, this device is completely relying on the HomeKit without it’s own app. This has it’s good and bad, during the initial few weeks of use, after asking Siri to open or close the garage door, HomeKit would change status to “Unknown” until few minutes later or says that it can’t perform the command because it’s not responding. However the device functions perfectly just need to wait for HomeKit to update status.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) for about 3 years to get myq Chamerlain to get working for my Homekit. It would work for a while, and then nothing for years. No matter how much I reset everything, it just stopped working. This was plug and play and pretty easy. Occasionally the head unit will disconnect from the sensor on the door, but hitting the button on the sensor will correct this issue. Easy application. Seems to be functioning well!

This is good garage door automation device, I was comparing myq vs insignia Pros: hard wire connections with garage controller so works well with old controllers too. Works with apple HomeKit so no separate profile on any other app or keeping app up to date all time. Command your garage door with Siri from anywhere in world. Cons: Some time it gets in not responding mode, hopefully future iOS or software upgrades will resolve it.

I bought two of these for separate doors and installation was extremely simple. Integration with HomeKit is intuitive and it works perfect on all of our iOS devices. My only complaint is that the sensors don't ALWAYS report back the correct status of the doors. I would say it's about roughly 90% accurate however that 10% that it's wrong is a problem. If it shows that the door is up and you hit close it can actually open a closed door. It doesn't happen often but it's enough that I can't give 5 stars.

      Moniker,

Thank you for your feedback. Please contact our customer support team and ask for level 2 support so that we can help resolve the door status issue you have reported. It is likely caused by a delay in updating the status of the door. This can happen for various reasons including low battery in the door sensor, distance and position of sensor and in some rare cases the LED bulbs that light up in the garage opener motor housing themselves produce radio interference with the door sensor preventing proper communication. We would be happy to walk you through these scenarios so that you would get a 100% accurate door status.

I bought a pair of these back in November and neither one has worked consistently for more than a few days at a time. I’m constantly rebooting them, reconnecting them to HomeKit, changing the batteries, pairing the opener to the door sensor. They either show ‘No response’, they get stuck on ‘opening...’, or they show the incorrect ‘open/closed’ status. Three firmware revisions have made no tangible improvements. Signal is not an issue, there is a WiFi router and a HomePod in the garage no more than 20’ away from them at all times. Bottom line, they just don’t deliver on their promise.

    Extraordinarily simple to setup

I installed this on one of my two garage doors, and ready to equip the other door with one. Super simple setup. In six or so weeks, I haven't had an issue where it wasn't showing the door status in the Home app, or failed to send a notification when the door is opened or closed. Before installing I was concerned as my wifi router is roughly 100' away with two walls, stairs, and a kitchen between. The instructions make very clear you have to have a decent wifi strength in the garage for this to work. The one feature I really wish this had was something that alerts me if a door is left open for X time and even trigger a close itself after Y. That limitation I blame more HomeKit for not having a way to custom script actions than the product, but Insignia might have been able to solve that in their software (as Chamberlin's myQ); otherwise this would be a 5 star review. I've been implementing HomeKit over the other automation protocols primarily because the inherent security HomeKit has, yet still too paranoid to allow this controller the ability to open the garage door. My goal was to be informed when garage doors are opened or closed, and be able to remotely close it should it be accidentally left open. Since I really only need the doors to open from the inside garage buttons or remotes in the cars, I have the wire from controller to opener pass through an open-when-set magnetic sensor mounted on the door, so the controller can close the garage door but not open it when fully closed (command to open can be sent but the opener never get's triggered). That would be another nice option for Insignia to add directly, along with an alert if open longer than X minutes.

I have been working on trying to get my Smart Home devices moved over to Apple HomeKit, where possible and this looked to be the device that would do that for my garage door at a reasonable price. I did not realize that this does require wiring to your opener before I purchased it. The wiring was not overly difficult, but did add some additional work and was not a user friendly as the MyQ devices I also have. Once I got it wired up, it did add the functionality I was looking for. Aside from the required wiring, the only other "issue" I have experienced with it is that it did drastically reduce the range of my physical garage door opener. It took me a lot of troubleshooting to determine that this was the culprit. To fix the issue, I ended up having to move the device further away from the actual garage door opener as it seemed to be interfering with the communication. I did have to move it a decent distance from the opener. Once it was moved, however, the issue is no longer present. The only other item I will note is that I do not like how they integrated the power plug into the device. I ended up having to purchase an extension cord as the device is too bulky to plug into an outlet if you plan on using the other plug on the outlet as well.

I love the fact this product can be added to most garage doors to turn an ordinary one into a smart one. We have used this product for about a month and a half now and it has worked well. I set the item up inside to make sure I had good WiFi connection. I recommend the same if your WiFi router isn’t quite as strong. Setup was a breeze and it added to HomeKit well. I love the ability to not only open and close the door remotely, but also being able to just check to see if the door is opened or closed. The door sensor is the furthest point away from our router and it has not read a couple of times, but it always eventually updates. That is not a problem with this product. Guess we are going to be in the market for a stronger router set up. When this first launched, it was on sale for $49. I wish I had bought the 2 I needed then, but didn’t as I was still researching at that time. I picked this one up at full price of $69, but will need to pick up another for our second door. Hopefully they will do a sale again soon. Love this product!!

    Great Value (with WiFi Extender)

I bought this smart garage opener because it was compatible with Apple Homekit and was way less expensive than the brand name smart garage opener (Chaimberland My Q?). Best Buy ran a special, so the price was right. Altogether, I would recommend this product with proper expectations. You MUST have a strong Wi-Fi signal in your garage. Even if your phone gets good reception (bars) in your garage, HomeKit will likely report "No Response" from the unit whenever it pings it for status, rendering it useless and causing you to pull your hair out. I was soooo close to returning it after reading other reviews sharing the same experience. However, I called Insignia and decided to try a WiFi extender to see if I could get it to work, despite having what I believed was a strong signal in the garage (perfectly adequate for my Rachio smart sprinkler system also in the garage). The separate WiFi extender (~$25 on Amazon) was essential for me to get this product to consistently work. I suspect it has a poor antenna and/or transmitter. It works great with a good WiFi signal and is super easy to setup with HomeKit. Would highly recommend if you are willing to invest in a WiFi extender, although to be fair, I think the product should be able to get away with a lower strength signal than it requires. Great value in the end, once the troubleshooting was complete.

I worked, and it is continuing to work, but with inconsistency. This inconsistency started after about a year later. It might be due to low battery in the garage door sensor. In this case, should not it send a notification about low battery? Otherwise, it is so convenient to be able to open the garage door with siri, with automation, etc.

A decent HomeKit retrofit for older door openers

The installation was easy. It basically just parallels a remotely activated (HomeKit) momentary switch with your existing manual mechanical contact switch (pushbutton.) I like the ten second audible alarm/flashing LED lights that precedes closure to warn folks that the door will be closing. The stick-on battery powered door position sensors are a neat design. I like the fact that it notifies you on your phone even for manual openings and closings. Good security feature. If your old openers use the standard doorbell mechanical switch, this should work for you. The door position sensors use a simple gravity operated tilt switch detection and the instructions say it will only work with a segmented door (not a full panel or horizontally opening door. Looking inside with the battery cover removed, you could likely adapt these to work with such with a bit of mechanical creativity if you are so inclined. My only issue has been the occasional failure to activate which sometimes happens with my other HomeKit devices as well so I don't attribute that to this device in particular.

I love smart home tech and this little add on is super cool and easy to set up and makes it where you can control your garage from your iOS/smartphone device. This is absolutely the most simple idea to automate your garage door opener. The installation was easy and I didn’t have to drill or modify anything. It does not stand out like a sore eye and the use of HomeKit to open and close the garage doors is seamless. Whenever someone opens or closes the garage door I receive a notification on my iPhone. However, the issue is that I sometimes get the “No Response” indicator. It just seems to come and go. I’m not sure why this happens because I have a mesh WiFi system so I have no weak points in my house. I really think it is a hardware issue with how the unit handles WiFi. I don’t unplug it or anything, but it just happens to reconnect on its own. It stays connected 90% of the time, but that 10% could come at the most inconvenient time. I had to deduct a star due to this issue.
