I initially purchased the MyQ kit for for opener but when I learned I needed another $90 bridge to make it work with HomeKit, I returned it. Right after, I found this and have been pretty satisfied. Before throwing out some negatives, I noticed I was getting a lot of “no response” errors and such and had figured that it was the unit and needed better WiFi or something but then I decided to test the battery in the door sensor and found it was dead. Once I replaced the CR2450 battery, all the errors went away and everything has been great.

Preforms exactly as expected. I suppose I was lucky in that I didn’t have to finagle the door sensor; it worked on the first try. And my Wi-Fi is strong enough.
A few improvements I would like:
Better screws/ mounting option for the door sensor.
“regular” battery (Not a coin battery) for the sensor - I expect it to not last very long, and I don’t stock spares.
Definitely worth the piece of mind.

Purchased last month to replace my existing Z-Wave opener. Was really easy to install, took me just 15min. Like other reviewers have stated, the only issue I occasionally run into is the obstruction warning displayed in the Home app. However, the app has so far correctly listed the open/closed status and have had no issues opening or closing. So I have learned to ignore the error when displayed. Definitely recommend for Homekit users looking to save money and avoid additional hubs.

The instructions for this product were outstanding and the controller works like a charm. I purchased two of these for both sides of the garage and set-up for both took about 45 minutes. It only took that long because I decided to re-add to HomeKit using a different wifi-network from our extender which took a little bit of extra time. All of the tools come in the box and it works great!

I purchased as a simple solution for adding HomeKit to my garage door opener. Although the installation was straight forward with no issues the unit would not open/close my garage door. What I found after a bit more research on the BestBuy webpages is that the unit is not compatible with a Chamberlain garage door opener with integrated MyQ functionality. If not for this, I am sure that the Insignia unit would have worked quite well. BestBuy accepted return of the unit without issue.

The set up was surprisingly easier than expected. But it doesn’t update within the HomeKit app as my other apps do. This happens mostly while I am home (e.g., in the garage and try to use it to open the garage; I end up using the clicker I have for the garage door more than not). When I am away from home I don’t have this problem. I can open the garage door way in advance to reaching home. Overall a good product. But a little tweaks might be in order.

The setup was not hard at all. The hardest thing for me was to figure out where to connect the cables on my garage door opener. Just a word of caution, if you have both 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz wifi, make sure your iPhone is connected to 2.4Ghz wifi SSID for the initial setup to go through. I have not give it 5 starts because most of the time when I open the garage door, take the car out and close the garage door immediately, I only get notification of garage door being closed (and not being opened).

Overall I'm happy with this product. It works with HomeKit just fine and has rarely been inaccurate about the state of the garage door.
It has been installed for about 6 months and the battery for the unit that senses if the door is opened or closed finally died. Pretty good for a generic battery that came with the product. Replaced it with a new one and it was no longer stuck infinitely thinking it was opening the garage door.
It has only once had a sensor problem where it thought the door was jammed but it was closed properly. A simple open and close resolved that.
The only thing that is an occasional problem is that the unit doesn't seem to respond within Apple's expected time frame despite being less than a foot from the garage hotspot. Prior to iOS 15, you'd get a "your devices failed to respond" voice feedback from Siri. Now it says something like "your devices are taking longer than usual to respond". That feels better because I could see most of the time it wasn't responding fast enough, it did the requested command.
I would have used an ethernet cable to connect this device, but unfortunately that is not an option. It would have significantly improved reliability in configurations where the hotspot has to be further from the device or the general area just has a lot of other hotspots creating interference.

I've been waiting for someone - ANYONE - to make a simple home kit garage door opener that doesn't cost a fortune! Thank you Insignia for taking on Lame-berlain and their crappy set up! The device has everything built-in, where the competition requires a hub for home kit. Set up is easy, BUT - and I must underline it just like everyone else - you HAVE to have a strong wifi signal, otherwise it just. Doesn't. Work. I just moved one of my mesh points to the garage. Connect into the same screws as the wall mounted opener wires, mount the open / close sensor to the door and voila done deal. Seriously probably the best deal you'll get on this, well done Insignia!

This is cheaper than buying extra new remotes. But it takes some work to set up beyond mounting. I had to replace the R2450 batter in the sensors and set up a reserved static ip for the unit. But once I did those things. I have not had any trouble with the unit and use it daily. (I do not feel comfortable leaving a garage door open in my convertible).

Product works, however it’s disappointing that it does not work with Alexa or Google. Only with Siri. The website advertised it as being Amazon Alexa capable. It seems like the product at some point was able to be used with the Insignia connect app, which would have enabled it to work with Alexa. However this option is no longer there. Other than that, simple install and works great with Siri at least. Would love to see an update to include Alexa or Google!

David,
Thank you for your feedback. Although the Insignia Garage Door Controller does not currently support Alexa or Google voice services, you can achieve the same by setting up an automation sequence in the Home app. All you need is a spare HomeKit device such as a smart plug. To do this, you can setup the Home app automation so that when that spare smart plug is turned on/off it will open/close the garage door. You can then setup Alexa or Google for that smart plug and even name it Garage. Then, simply say, Hey Google, Turn On Garage or Turn Off Garage.

One of the simplest HomeKit devices I have ever setup. No app to download and no device firmware updates. Granted maybe there should be some, because everyone and then it gets stupid and doesn't know the door position. But HomeKit is also so buggy that maybe its Apple's fault. (Apple doesn't care.)
Overall I am really happy with the add-on, even if I have to power cycle it every few months.

I have been using this device for two weeks now and it works like a champ, easy to install, easy to configure, overall is a good value for the money. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before you buy this product and when using it, I list them below:
1. It is designed to work with Apple HomeKit app.
2. When you open the Apple Home App give it a few seconds until you see the updated status of the garage door, either "closed" or "open", otherwise it might not respond because the system needs to know the status of the garage door before it responds to your command.
3. My experience with Siri and this product is really good, try to assign a simple name to this accessory in the Apple HomeKit so Siri understands easily to the command.
4. It works only with WiFi 2.4 GHz, also be sure the WiFi signal is strong where you are installing this device.

What a fantastic, low priced alternative for an older garage door opener. As some reviews mentioned, it doesn’t always respond, but it’s exactly the same way as all the other HomeKit accessories. About 90% of the time it’s works just fine. It’s a great convenience, and a good alternative when the regular transmitter doesn’t work.

Product was easy to install and definitely more economical than the chamberlain system. My only issue is you don’t get instantaneous notifications when the door opens or closes. Might be a limitation of HomeKit but I’m not sure. However if you open the app, the system updates and shows the correct status which is all I really bought this for anyways. Never worry if you left your door open again.

Easy enough setup but then when I tried getting it into Apple's Homekit it said couldn't add accessory due to incompatible router. I have a Netgear AC1900 which is probably one of the most popular ones out there! Even updated my WIFI router to the latest firmware.. Lastly I have another brand in the garage that has worked for years but decided to change it up, bad choice :-/ Will be returning unfortunately cause support said I must have a faulty unit which isn't the case (horrible customer service on the phone and no response via email)

I have an older garage opener from 1989 and I was surprised that this unit was compatible with such an old unit. The only negative feedback is that after I installed the unit my garage door openers in my vehicles do not work as well. I have to be on my driveway for the vehicle garage door openers to work. Not sure if this is because the wifi is not great in my garage. Overall the unit work as advertised.

Hello, I am glad to read that the garage door opener was able to function properly with your garage. Regarding the signal, yes to be able to operate the unit it has to be in your network range. Please contact us at 1-877-467-4289 from 8am to 12pm CT if you have any questions or concerns.

These were on sale this week so I picked one up one for my 20 year old chamberlain opener. I had it setup and running in 15 minutes, no issue. Looks like the instructions now include several of the tips mentioned here.
For grins I spent another 5 minutes setting up a HomeKit automation that turns all the Garage lights on for 5 minutes anytime the door is opened or closed, whether its opened by the wall button, the OEM car remote, or via HomeKit. Spouse is now happy to have more light when she drives home in the evening.
I do notice that its a bit slower to update status than my other devices. Seems that when I flip from room view to home and back the status updates quicker. Dunno if thats a HomeKit issue or Insignia. The WIFI signal in my garage is strong as the router is in the room above.
I like the idea that the device doesn't need an internet connection to a mothership to function (local api), I don't need another app cluttering up my phone and an account. Nicely done, just needs a more robust wifi radio for those with weaker signal. The included screw driver is a nice touch.

Started to use and had connected with HomeKit December ‘18 with great success and was really happy...for about 2 months, then! It originally connected with HomeKit easily and I set up as part of an automated “Scene” to close the overhead garage door (along with locking my doors, turning off lights, etc at my set time) and it tested out fine. More recently I had woken a few times in the morning to find the overhead garage door open! What, this is the opposite of why I purchased the device. Even though I hadn’t changed the HomeKit “Automation” setting, the garage door icon changed...the icon said close but showed the door in an open position. I removed the accessory from the particular scene and added it back and made sure it was properly indicating the garage door to be in the closed position. A few days later I again woke to find the overhead door open! Extremely annoyed, not only because something could have been taken from the garage, but we can also have large snow storms this time of year where I live and could have woken to a garage full of snow! Then the past few days HomeKit says the accessory can’t be found. I went through several steps to reconnect to my wi-fi...unplug, plugged back in, reset the connection button on the device, unplugged yet again, etc,etc...nothing, would not connect. So I’m puttin back in the box and returning. Guess some of the reviews I read prior to my purchasing were accurate in that it works for a little while and then stops working. Long story short, poor product.
Also, strangely I needing to be in significantly closer proximity to the overhead door when using the integrated garage door opener in my cars’ visor (as in I needed to be within 20’ of the overhead door vs several hundred) than prior to having connected this device. While this may not seem like much, it meant I ALWAYS waited in front of the garage door to open before being able to just pull in the garage.

This works very well with my Genie opener from the early 90s and it’s a great option to use with older equipment. The Controller comes with 2 pigtails that connect in parallel with an existing hardwired “doorbell” button. There’s a slight delay on opening and closing commands, although at this price point it doesn’t matter.
