This item was so awesome and installed in minutes. I am so glad I found this and just learned that Insignia was a Best Buy brand. It worked the 1st time and really nice to have this protection on my garage door. Not hard to install. Very easy. IT works with MY HOME on my iPhone 11 Pro MAX App. I was so glad to see that it worked with MY HOME APP. Thats why I bought it in the first place. I always get the GEEK SQUAD PROTECTION with each Purchase.

TL;DR Adding a 0.5" (1.27cm) thick piece of wood between the sensor and a metal garage door fixed my problems. I attached a photo of my sensor installation. I installed this system the day before Thanksgiving 2019. Before purchasing, I had read the mixed reviews, including the helpful modification suggested by Joparad. I was hoping for the best, but somewhat expected trouble. I decided to give it a shot because it was on sale and I knew I could return it if it didn't work out. Installation was a piece of cake, but unfortunately right away I experienced inconsistent behavior. Sometimes everything worked as expected, other times the Apple Home app would say there was an obstruction or the door was closing when in fact there were no obstructions and/or the door was closed fully. I tried the recommendation proposed by Joparad (shim the bottom of the door sensor a bit to change its angle), but unfortunately that did not work in my application. This is still a good suggestion and may work for other people -- particularly if your door has a bit of angle to it. There is a metal ball tilt sensor on the printed circuit board -- you can hear it when you move it around. It sounds a bit like a small baby rattle. I called Best Buy customer support. I reached a human very quickly, but as expected their play book for troubleshooting was pretty limited and I had already done the usual things. He suggested returning it to the store for an exchange. Before doing that, I decided to see if I could figure out why it was behaving inconsistently. looked closely at the sensor electronics assembly which is visible when you remove the screw to the cover to access its battery. I noticed that the antenna on the door sensor is very close to the door itself. In my case the grage door is made of metal so I wondered if perhaps the antenna was being detuned or its radiation pattern impacted by the metal door in close proximity. I wondered if perhaps the sensor and the controller were having RF communication problems. I don't know the details of how frequently the two try and communicate with one another. I decided to try spacing the sensor away from the metal door by adding a roughly 0.5" (1.27cm) thick piece of wood in between the door and the sensor. I'm glad to report that after doing that, the system has worked flawlessly for 4 days -- with over 50 up/down cycles. If you have a metal door, you may want to try out this solution. I hope it helps a few other people get the expected experience from this otherwise pretty simple and useful product. Taking away 1 star because the product did not work as expected without me needing to home brew an adjustment to make it work. If I had not had that problem I would have given it 5/5 stars.

    Compatibility, Price, Use with homekit

I can't believe how easy this was to install or how well it works! I bought two because I have two separate garage doors. I'm getting more and more into this "smart home" stuff, but a lot of the homekit enabled products out there are expensive and buggy. I thought for sure I'd run into some unforseen installation problem - it's the story of my life. But no, I had both of them installed in under 15 minutes. No drilling or special tools. This only works with homekit and it works quite well. Sometimes the status takes a few seconds to update but beyond that it works as advertised. I've even tested the homekit automation where the garage door shuts when I leave and opens when I get home. Amazing. I bought these on sale for $45 a piece but I would pay full price for something that works so well.

I FIGURED OUT THE OBSTRUCTION PROBLEM

I FIGURED OUT THE “OBSTRUCTION DETECTED” ISSUE PPL ARE HAVING. I got the item on sale for $45, and decided to give it a shot despite some issues reported here. Installation was easy! But when I used Apple HomeKit to open and close the garage door, it would work BUT the status of the garage was incorrect whenever the door was closed. HomeKit would say it’s “closing” or “obstruction detected” even though the door was completely shut. I felt that it was an issue with the sensor on the door because when I was playing around with the sensor before I installed it, tilting the sensor in my hand back and forth would cause HomeKit to show the door “open” or “closed” properly. I suspected that the level in the sensor was off a few degrees so it thought the door was slightly tilted open even though it was closed. So I reinstalled the sensor with some shimming on the bottom edge to make it tilt up very slightly as shown in the pic. Now it works perfectly. 3 stars for a decent product with subpar construction and for making me waste all this time figuring it out! I would recommend it if you can get it cheaper for the $45 I paid.

Having used the MyQ and Aladdin Connect. The insignia wins. I hope that at some point insignia will give this an Alexia skill and an android app, but that’s only because why not. As far as it working with HomeKit it does it works quite well $69 is cheap and the least expensive route to HomeKit. Very pleased with it and easy easy easy installation. Did I mention easy installation and setup, did I actually do a setup? Obviously but it was completely painless! The only issue is where the home kit sticker is located. It is blocked while garage door opener plugged, not really a problem but more of a overlooked detail.

      Hi Billy,

Thank you for your feedback, at the time of launch for this product we did not have access to all available garage door openers for compatibility testing. The Ryobi garage openers incorporate a Smart Indoor Keypad which unlike other compatible garage openers do not have the simple 2-wire interface to the Open/Close wall button panel switch. We will continue to investigate other methods of interface to Ryobi and other garage openers and will update the compatibility list accordingly.

    Errors

I bought this with low expectations because of the reviews & expected to have issues with the sensor that goes on the garage door. I read all the reviews but decided to test it out anyway. It took me a while to get the wires in the garage door opener properly as my garage is dry walled & tracing the wires wasn’t going to happen & normally black is ground, not on this, but black went with red wires so that slowed me down. From there I decided to mount the sensor on the center metal frame at about 5ft with 3m adhesive. Instantly had issues just like everyone else says in the reviews but I refuse to believe that I needed to install a block of wood. I decided to just go off the instruction manual & mount it where it says to on one of the end rails at the very top (refer to the attached photo). Instantly worked, haven’t had any issues at all, so go future buyers & current owners, INSTALL PER INSTRUCTIONS. All the sensor problems are user error!

I have been working on trying to get my Smart Home devices moved over to Apple HomeKit, where possible and this looked to be the device that would do that for my garage door at a reasonable price. I did not realize that this does require wiring to your opener before I purchased it. The wiring was not overly difficult, but did add some additional work and was not a user friendly as the MyQ devices I also have. Once I got it wired up, it did add the functionality I was looking for. Aside from the required wiring, the only other "issue" I have experienced with it is that it did drastically reduce the range of my physical garage door opener. It took me a lot of troubleshooting to determine that this was the culprit. To fix the issue, I ended up having to move the device further away from the actual garage door opener as it seemed to be interfering with the communication. I did have to move it a decent distance from the opener. Once it was moved, however, the issue is no longer present. The only other item I will note is that I do not like how they integrated the power plug into the device. I ended up having to purchase an extension cord as the device is too bulky to plug into an outlet if you plan on using the other plug on the outlet as well.

It has periods where it decides not to communicate and will show as offline. Other times it works fine. It seems to make no difference whether I go unplug it, it will resolve itself eventually on its own and then stop working again, seemingly at random. Other times, it lies about the status of the door. I don't believe this is a sensor issue, I believe Apple HomeKit is just not getting the updated status when it updates, due to the random offline periods. I gave up on making any "smart" automations that would, say, be sure to close my door at night, because multiple times it decided it was open and issued the "close" command which of course opened it and it was left open all night. I'd say probably 80% of the time, this functions correctly. Since it's completely dependent on Apple Homekit (there's no "Insignia app" or anything) I can't confirm if this is just Apple being flaky. I have an Apple TV at home to be a hub so it should always be able to connect even when I'm out of the home. In conclusion, buy this if you want to use the CarPlay integration where it'll show your garage door opener when you near your house, or to close your garage when you're walking down the street, and if you have other use cases where the failure of this thing would be a minor inconvenience. Don't buy it if you envision Apple HomeKit automations will simplify your life and make sure your door is closed when it's supposed to be, nor to open your garage from work so that a vital delivery can be delivered and then secured. You just can't trust it that much, and you'll never know if it even worked unless you also have a camera with eyes on it.

I love the simplicity. No new automation accounts, no new hubs, no new apps to install. Installation was easy if you can use a ladder and a screwdriver. It was added to my network with no configuration using the Home app and using the camera to scan the ID number. It wires directly to the opener so there are no garage codes to learn and store. Sometimes it takes a small amount of time to update status and you need an Apple TV, Home Pod, or powered iPad to act as a hub for control when you are out of the house.

Make sure you have a strong WiFi signal that reaches your garage or add a WiFi booster. Also, only issue occurs when the door sensor battery dies... You can test at the door sensor but if you don’t know that’s the problem then the HealthKit shows that garage opener is “not responding”. Just an FYI... it means you need a new battery. Hopefully they’ll be some communication to indicate to you a status when the battery is low in future releases… But, this is a very good product and I recommend it.

One of the simplest HomeKit devices I have ever setup. No app to download and no device firmware updates. Granted maybe there should be some, because everyone and then it gets stupid and doesn't know the door position. But HomeKit is also so buggy that maybe its Apple's fault. (Apple doesn't care.) Overall I am really happy with the add-on, even if I have to power cycle it every few months.

I was curious whether this Insignia product would work as well as the Chamberlain MyQ products on an older LiftMaster opener. So far, it has worked almost perfectly for 2+ months. Installation was quick and easy, partly because I used an older Wi-Fi router configured for only 2.4GHz frequency. The Insignia is able to connect reliably with about 30 feet and two walls separating it from the router. Compared to a Chamberlain MyQ opener that is closer to the router, the Insignia is slower to respond and update its status, but not by much. The Insignia is, however, much less expensive than the MyQ products — about 30% of the cost to add HomeKit to MyQ. The comparative cost and performance of this Insignia product are such that I wish BestBuy would release more HomeKit products!

It works how it is supposed to most times, sometimes it takes a few seconds to update. If you have problems with it out of the box like I and apparently many others have had, just repair the door sensor to the controller and that should fix it.

I installed it (very easy) and tested it while standing in the garage. And it worked great. Nothing really to it. Then as I started using it there seemed to be issues. I would sit in the driveway trying to get it to work. It would just try to open and couldn't. Sometimes it would work. And couldn't figure out my problem. Finally it hit me to turn off my wifi on my phone while pulling up to the house. And it started working everytime! My issue was my wifi router would connect as I pulled up to the house but would have one bar signal. And wasn't really sending the commands to the controller. But when I turn off wifi as pulling up it works perfectly. The other way around this issue is to open the garage door before getting in range with the wifi router. If you have a great wifi router that covers your driveway with signal you won't have this issue. I am looking into getting a router with better range.

Very easy to install. Apple Home app is easy to use as well. I did have to purchase a WiFi extender to strengthen the signal enough to use it but that I think speaks more to the distance between my garage and router.

OMG it's such a relief to find a device that actually works out of the box and as intended. I had originally purchased the Chamberlain MyQ HUB (from Best Buy) only find out I had to get another MyQ product to get HomeKit support. Stupid, right? Well, Chamberlain thinks it's a good idea. Anyway, bought the MyQ Home Bridge and no matter what I did, it would never work reliably. I ended up cutting my losses and dumping them on eBay and got the Insignia instead. It's been ROCK SOLID and setup was a breeze. I have NONE of the issues stated by others here. I can kick myself for not getting the Insignia in the first place - vs wasted $$ and time trying to get the MyQ to work. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my purchase,

    Pros mentioned:
    Compatibility, Ease of use, Price

I have been using this device for two weeks now and it works like a champ, easy to install, easy to configure, overall is a good value for the money. There are a few things you need to keep in mind before you buy this product and when using it, I list them below: 1. It is designed to work with Apple HomeKit app. 2. When you open the Apple Home App give it a few seconds until you see the updated status of the garage door, either "closed" or "open", otherwise it might not respond because the system needs to know the status of the garage door before it responds to your command. 3. My experience with Siri and this product is really good, try to assign a simple name to this accessory in the Apple HomeKit so Siri understands easily to the command. 4. It works only with WiFi 2.4 GHz, also be sure the WiFi signal is strong where you are installing this device.
