One year after purchase and I'm still resolving heat issues. Out of the box the CPU and GPU typically idles at 45-50° C (113-122° F) using the "Intel recommended" cool settings (image uploaded) in BIOS. The core package temperature frequently rises to well over 90° C (194° F) while editing a single photo in either Lightroom or Photoshop, and frequently locked up while performing batch edits or while screen-sharing during a Skype session. Intel Customer Support was unable to provide a solution for this issue, leaving it up to me to determine a "custom" setting (image uploaded) that would allow me to use this product for more than just word processing, web browsing, or emails.
Even after adding moving all the NUC 9 Extreme kit components into a Cooler Master case and adding a third-party graphics card the machine still runs hot. I also added 2 80mm computer fans to blow cooler air into the chassis, but this machine still runs hot. Currently, typical idle temperatures for the CPU and third party GPU hover around an acceptable 36-40° C (97-104° F). Heavy-duty image editing, however, frequently raises the CPU temperatures to the 95-101° C (203-214° F) range even while the GPU cruises along around the 50° C (122° F) temperature range.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This seems to be a fairly well put together PC with nice capabilities. My main issue with it stems from my unfamiliarity with these types of PCs and the fact that they typically are sold as "barebones" computers...you still need to purchase RAM, SSDs, and an operating system. That was actually the reason for me returning it since we needed a fully functional PC out of the box for a client. Luckily, I discovered my oversight before I actually opened the boxes so Best Buy allowed me to return them for a full refund. The Best Buy reps at the store were very friendly and professional throughout the whole return processes. They didn't give me any issues with the return.
If you are okay with purchasing RAM, SSDs, and an operating system separately from your PC, this looks to be a pretty good PC.
