The Roomba 960 has been cleaning the bottom floor of my house nearly daily since late July. So far I’m very satisfied with the job it’s doing. My wife was skeptical about the value of the robot, but once she saw how much dust and dirt it was picking up from a floor that appeared to be clean, she now uses it daily. We have a dog who sleeps inside the house in a crate and the Roomba has kept the pet dander to a minimum. This has helped a lot with my wife’s allergies as she is allergic to pet dander. Couple of notes from my use - Battery lasts just long enough to complete a cycle through my bottom floor (see picture) - After each cycle I empty the dust bin, remove the filter, rollers, clean all sensors and blow off dust from the robot using a dataVac electronics blower. This takes me about 3-5 minutes as I’ve got my routine down. I usually do this after getting home from work since Roomba runs during the day - I put my couch up on blocks to ensure the entire bottom floor is accessible by the bot. This was the dirtiest place in our house until we started using the Roomba. - 42 completes cycles and the Roomba has found the base station every time - Dust bin full sensor is very delicate regardless of my maintenance routine so I turned on the option to force the Roomba to finish a cleaning cycle regardless of the bin. - After setup on WiFi I can’t seem to get the app to connect until I get off WiFi and onto the cell network then the app runs just fine. I imagine it’s an issue with my router but I haven’t taken the time to trouble shoot why the app is getting blocked - I’ve ran the bot on carpet upstairs a few times and it did a great job, I may get a second bot to clean upstairs. I’ve owned the BotVac connected before and I remember it had issues getting stuck and finding its base station. I don’t know if the new model is any better, but I don’t think I’ll find out because I’m happy with the Roomba. I’m pretty sure the Roomba 980 has the more powerful carpet mode so that will most likely be my next purchase so it can clean the upstairs. The price is a lot considering vacuuming can be done by hand for a lot less, but this Roomba can clean places I can’t and it does the work while I focus on things I need to get done around the house. The extra time saved makes it worth it.

A family member got a less expensive, off-brand robot vacuum, which was tempting, but with two German Shepherds, we knew we needed something that could keep up. As they say, German Shepherds shed twice a year for six months. This model of Roomba has exceeded our expectations. We set it up — with ease — just a couple of hours after the entire house was vacuumed with a Dyson Ball Animal vacuum. As the Roomba passed through the house, it passed under dog beds and brushed along baseboards, sweeping and sucking up dog hair, dust, and fluffy fuzz from who knows what. Our already-vacuumed 2204 sq ft house* filled up the Roomba bin three times on the first run. We were shocked — and thrilled! Check out the photo, attached. *About 900 sq ft of carpet with the rest being hard surfaces, all of which we vacuum The things its done that have pleasantly surprised us most: -Incredible "cliff" edge detection has prevented it from falling into the one room that's sunken down in our house (about 4"). -It's 100% mindful of the boundary device that's included with the Roomba, which we placed in the kitchen to keep it away from our breakfast table and the dogs' bowls (and towels that catch water bowl dribbles). -It gracefully crosses from carpet to luxury vinyl tile to throw rugs without getting stuck or just turning around. -It picks up random pieces of Feline Pine (cat litter) that sometimes makes it way out of the litter box. -It picked up a baffling amount of dog hair, and no doubt dust, from under beds and other places that don't get attention every time we vacuum. There have been only a few mediocre moments. The Roomba didn't have enough charge to get back to home base twice in the past three weeks. One time it got caught up a drawstring to a small bag (it got wrapped around one of the wheels). It's so nice to be able to have clean floors most of the time, instead of fretting every time a guest, neighbor, or family member come by on short notice. We're sure it's helped with allergies and whole-house freshness, too. It is definitely proving itself worth the investment.

I’ve owned the iRobot Roomba 960 for about a week and a half so far. For us, I think the 960 is the sweet spot given features, our cleaning environment and price. Let me explain; as a geek, techno guy I would normally want the top of the line, most feature packed device available. With that said, sometimes the best can’t quite do everything I whish it could. We own a two-year-old red merle border collie named Shepherd with long wiry hair that sheds constantly and a medium hair length cat. Vacuuming for the pets before the Roomba, now named R2-D2 was a constant chore that needed to be done way more than I would prefer using our Shark vacuum set especially if people were coming over to the house. The Shark vac does a great job but it took up to two hours, sometimes longer to make everything look hair free. R2 on the other hand does all but most extreme places without my supervision with one exception. I take care of R2 and R2 takes care of the hair and other dirt and dust. So why did I not get one of the top-of-the-line i7 models? Once again it was the type of dog hair Shepherd drops everywhere. Our previous red and white border collie even though he had a much thicker double coat did not hardly shed, Shepherds coat could be used as a biological weapon if it got into the wrong hands. R2 has no trouble at all sweeping it up but the issue is that it accumulates in the sides of the rollers, edge brush and wheels. This is not a problem for me because I was sure going into this robotic relationship that I would have to keep up with this. There is just no way to keep Shepherd’s type of hair from getting wrapped around anything that rolls or moves in a mechanical device. The new i7 and i7+ Roombas would still have this problem so owning the i7+ with its self bin cleaning feature would I am sure get its rollers and wheels stuck long before it completed its 30 bin cycle. This may not be the case for other people with normal or no dog hair in their home but for me it would be a major frustration. I would say that if you can afford the i7+ and do not have a wiry long-haired shedding pet then go for it. As it is, bin dumping along with cleaning removing tangled dog hair is a five-minute job that needs to be done twice during a charge of the Roomba. I use the small Shark vac to clean R2. It takes 3-4 charges to completely clean our single-story house. I do not use the voice operation but I do use the phone app which works very well. WiFi works good and our home is completely mapped out on the app. The none-self-dumping i7 is smarter in that it can do individual rooms by command once it maps your house but cost a minimum of $150 more and has a smaller bin that would need dumping more often. We got our 960 on sale for $450 and then bought the 4 year extra insurance package because we were not sure how it would hold up to the hair issue long term. Over all I am really pleased with the Roomba 960. It cleans exceptionally well and frees me to do other things except for its maintenance routine while it is working. It is amazing how much stuff it picks up even after cleaning with the Shark system. I would highly recommend the Roomba 960 to anyone with reasonable expectations.

We upgraded from the 690 because it didn't have the ability to recharge itself and resume cleaning which was needed for the first floor of our 4 bedroom house. Also the 690 didn't clean in a consistent pattern whereas the 960 does which undesired to an OCD person like myself. :) Initially the robot seemed to address all of the issues we had with the 690 but then we started noticing problems. -The brushless rollers on this model don't seem to pick up the dirt specs on our hardwood sometimes whereas the 690 never missed them. This is really annoying to see specs of dirt and debris on the hardwood where the Roomba just passed over them. -The unit constantly gets hung on the corner of area carpets, baby high chair feet, couch feet support bars, you name it. I think I am being fair when I say 50% of the time the unit gets hung up. -Every time it's going to run we have to pick up EVERYTHING on the floor and bend the corners of area carpets back down (that the Roomba curled up) just to try and get a successful cleaning. It seems like we are doing a LOT of work just in hopes that the robot works w/o getting hung up which in my mind defeats the purpose of a robot vacuum a little bit. -When the unit does get hung, you are given like 90 minutes to fix it before it cancels the job... seriously this is the worst feature because we have it clean when we are at work and certainly aren't going to get hom in 90 minutes to fix it. The result is if we want our entire floor cleaned that day we have to let it start al over again which can take hours for it to finish given it needs to recharge part of the way through. I would like to set it to indefinitely wait for someone to unstick it so maybe it could spend 20 minutes finished what little it had left. I would only recommend this vacuum to a friend with non-area rugs, furniture it wouldn't get hung up on, and who doesn't care that it can occasionally miss specs of dust/dirt. All in all had I to do it over again I woudl have skipped the 690 and 960 and gone with a competitor's product that was cheaper and hopefully had less issues.

So Much Better Than I Imagined

My wife and I have been thinking about a Roomba for a while now. 3 of the 4 people in our family have allergies, so we needed a vacuum with a Hepa filter so it was a decision between the 800 series and the 900 series. We chose the 960 because of the methodical vacuum patterns, the edging feature, the app integration and the ability to finish the job after it charges. Pros: -Logical cleaning pattern -Edge mode -Recharge and finish the job -Goes up over the lip in our kitchen -Learns the house and improves over time -Cleaning under the furniture Cons -It doesn't see a lip as an edge, so it doesn't go back over it when doing the edges -Doesn't pick up everything, but most everything My wife and I really appreciate the logical patterns the 960 uses. It does a back and forth starting from the direction it starts in (either the charging station on where you place it). After reading about the 800 series doing random patters, we felt that the 900 series was the one for us. We felt that if we had it do the upstairs and it didn't finish we wouldn't know what it cleaned. Speaking of the upstairs, we have the charging station on the 1st level, but we bring it upstairs and lock it in each room to clean. It can do most of the upstairs before it needs to be charged, but it can do the whole downstairs (800 sq feet) on one charge. One of the things were were concerned about was the 13/16ths inch lip in our kitchen and hallway. After about a 1/2 inch vertical, the lip then goes into a gradual slope. Well we didn't have to worry about that. The 960 goes up and down like the lip isn't even there. The one problem with the lip is that since the 960 doesn't see the lip as an edge or an obstacle, it doesn't really clean along the lip. I'm really impressed how the 960 "learns" the house. It seems to remember the layout of the house and furniture and anticipates what it needs to do. For an example, my wife opened the basement door once to let the 960 clean the landing and the next time it cleaned it looked to go in that door, even though it was closed. We find with the 960 we need to do some cleanup ahead of time, like getting chairs up off the floor. That okay because instead of moving furniture as you clean with a traditional vacuum, you just do all the work up front. We put the chairs up on the tables like a restaurant does and that gets the up and out of the way. Overall, it was a great decision to buy the Roomba 960. It saves us time and cleans under things we wouldn't clean on a regular basis. We end up using it more than we would vacuum, so the house is cleaning than it normally would have been. It doesn't get into the tiny spaces, but that's easy to clean up after it does its thing. I can't speak to the other models, but I would certainly recommend the Roomba 960 to anyone.

    Waste of money

My husband bought the iRobot Roomba 960 for me as a Christmas present in 2018. I'm convinced it's the biggest waste of money my household spent all year. - It gets stuck everywhere. It'll suck up the corner of an area rug and get stuck. It'll forcefully wedge itself under appliances and furniture and get stuck. It gets stuck under the fridge, under the dishwasher, under the couch and under the entertainment center. To prevent it from getting stuck in such places I've been wedging shoes all around the house. The technology for sensing barriers is just not good enough, and it's not only evident in how the robot gets stuck, it's also seen in how it rams itself into walls and permanent objects it *should* know are there. In fact, it rammed and wedged itself so hard on our entertainment center that the plastic ring on the front broke in half. - It does little to nothing on area rugs. While the robot seems to do fine vacuuming hardwood floors, area rugs have visible amounts of lint and hair left behind. It just does not do enough in these areas of the home. So while iRobot claims this unit works on carpet, I shudder to think how much lint, dirt and hair are getting left behind for people with wall to wall carpet. - It frequently gets confused and cancels the job in the middle of the room because it can't find its home base. Even after the unit has been running for weeks, and should "remember" the layout of the house, it still gets confused all the time and shuts down. Even in the middle of the day, even at night when lights are on in *every* room, so it's not an issue of the robot not being able to see. - It'll lose it's battery during a job and power off in the middle of a room, cancelling the cleaning event. The unit *should* be smart enough to sense its battery is getting low, return home and charge, and then finish the job, but half the time it does not do this. It instead just dies and cancels the job. - It stops showing a map of the home after a few runs and I have to reboot it. - It complains that the bin is full when it's not. Another instance where I have to reboot the robot. This unit is an overpriced toy that is not worth the money or hassle.

House: 1,800 sq/ft, + 700 sq/ft garage apt. with hardwood and tile floors & 2 large area rugs. Two adults, one cat (mostly outside) and an old inactive short haired Dachshund. We live on a sand hill. Total cleaning time to date is 70 hours, 24,100 total sq/ft cleaned to date, typical run time is 1.5 hr. Two of my wife's friends recommended the Roomba. I wasn't impressed when I saw the Roomba 960. It is mostly plastic construction and the rubber like rollers don't look like they would pick up much dirt. I bought it mostly to humor my wife. My first impression was way off. My floor cleaning routine was to use a Swiffer dry mop around the edges of the room followed by the Bissell 1543 vacuum & steam cleaner. I vacuum the area rugs with an Orkeck. Now I do the manual cleaning once every two weeks and use the Roomba every other day. It is amazing how much lint, hair and fine dust the Roomba picks up. It picks up stuff when the floors look clean. It does a much better job on the area rugs than the upright vacuum! The Roomba has only gotten stuck a couple of times. I move a few chairs and other potential obstacles before cleaning to allow access to areas that might not be accessible otherwise. The Roomba sometimes generates an error when trying to spot treat a large black section of the area rug. Other than that, it has worked flawlessly. The cleaning algorithme doesn't appear to be designed for maximum efficiency. It appears clean almost randomly and uses the sensors to detect stationary objects. When it encounters a stationary object, it changes direction. That means that it may miss a few areas on each cleaning and the run time is longer than if the Roomba were smarter, but if you run it often it will clean areas that were missed on the previous cleaning. All in all the Roomba 960 isn't perfect, but I believe that is was a good investment and does a better job on the low pile are rugs than a conventional vacuum. It seems to be especially effective in picking up lint and pet hair.

I heard from several people that this machine was ‘awesome, you need to get this’! I thought there’s no way this thing is going to work that well. I probably wouldn’t have entertained getting it, but I purchased Xmas gifts from Best Buy that the recipient already had and ended up returning them outside the return window by a day and ended up with over $300 store credit. So I thought ok, what the heck I’m almost half way there. It sat in the box at home for 2 days because I thought I didn’t have time to set this thing up. Finally took it out for “setup”,what a joke! This thing is Plug and Play!! The hardest thing about setup was taking the tape off various areas that was holding things in place for shipping! Even the app for the phone was a breeze! When this robot started to do its thing, I couldn’t believe my eyes! It does a thorough job and programming is easy. At first I was getting “bin full” notifications within a short time of starting. It was frustrating because I would come home from work and the bin was not full and the cleaner had been sitting on the home charger all day! I soon figured out that the particular sensor for that is quite sensitive. However, there is a solution. There is an over ride in the app to ignore it. Once I turned that on, floors are clean when I walk in thru the door at the end of the day, how nice is that?!?! The only complaint I have really is that sometimes it will get “stuck”. It’s happened 3 times, twice in the same spot. Easy fix,use the “fake wall” boundary that comes with the robot and don’t let it under that piece of furniture. Make sure you get at least the 960 model. You’ll want one that can go back to “home”, recharge and finish the job. I love this thing! Don’t expect perfection..it’s not going to do your Spring and Fall cleaning. But it’s doing a better job cleaning the floors on a daily basis than I am able to!! It’s so nice to come home from work to see what “ Hazel” has done for you! Now if they just would come out with a robot that will wash, fold and put laundry away!!

I was tired of hearing my hubby whine about dog hair every day. We both work out of the home and don't have a maid or housekeeper so I decided to make my life easier. I've tried 3 different robot vacuums and this one is the best so far. First was the Roomba 860 - my first robot vacuum so I was impressed until after a couple of weeks it just seemed to keep getting stuck in the same places and didn't vacuum the "dog hair rug" very well. I returned it and tried the PowerBot 9020 - It vacuumed better than the 860 but had no programming feature which I couldn't live without. It was also taller than the Roombas and had difficulty getting over the edges of rugs I have in the house (mainly the ones that have a carpet pad under them). After a week it also started getting stuck in this one corner by the stairs. It could get out by backing up but wouldn't do it. So then after research I decided to pay out a little more cash and try the Roomba 960 (I wanted the 980 but couldn't justify the extra $200). I ran the 960 yesterday and it's GREAT. It spent lots of time on the "dog hair rug" and I think it vacuumed it better than us humans do with the dyson. It's programmable which was a necessity for me. From other reviewers I suspect it will figure out the layout of the rooms after running a few times. It's already got the layout on the app - although not exact yet. I would highly recommend this one. I even watched it go on it's route in the kitchen, notice it had missed a small piece of debris, and go back and get it! wow! I was impressed with that. It goes back to it's charging station when it needs to recharge. Basically it does everything I need it to do to help a busy household out with one less chore being done so often. We'll still vacuum ourselves occasionally but this thing will save us a lot of time.

The bad first: Roomba 960 does not like accent rugs, door rugs, hall runners or thick carpets. If you have a lot of those types of rugs you will be very unhappy with Roomba 960. It either catches the edge of the rugs and gets stuck or does a poor job on carpets. The good: It does a good job on hard surface floors like tile, stained concrete and laminate. It has never failed to find it's home base for charging. Even after eating accent rugs and having been manually rescued it continued to clean and found home base for charging. It picks up a LOT of dog hair, lint, fuzz and fine dust. Empty the dust bin every chance you get. Goes underneath beds and some furniture ok. VERY IMPORTANT: There is a lot of room preparation required before unleashing the 960. It will eat phone charging, power, electric blanket and any other cords it runs across. I use wire ties and self stick plastic hooks to keep cable out of the way. Roomba also eats curtains, shears, socks or anything loose that can get underneath it. All the things you know not to run over or into with a vacuum the Roomba does not understand. It just a machine. I don't know what is useful life span is but I've read that with proper maintenance and battery replacement some people have used Roomba's for years. Our dog has a hard time with walking and slipping on our hard surface floors so we put a lot of rugs down to prevent the dog from hurting himself. Sometimes the 960 with eat the edge of a rug and sometimes not. I think I will try double sides carpet tape to hold the rug edges down. The Roomba has never finished a run without eating a small rug and having to be rescued. Roomba won't replace, but will reduce the number of times you have use your corded power vacuum. If you have hard surface floors with few rugs and clutter you will like it.

I have been eyeing the robot vaccumes for a while and just never could pull the trigger. When best buy had this on sale for black Friday between using my best buy reward points and the sale I bought my Christmas present to myself. be prepared the first few times to have to clean out the bin multiple times as it will clean things even though you have just vaccumed with a traditional vaccum. now I run it daily and only clean the bin when finished. NOTE as the instructions say it will not do a whole room before it moves on thru the house it will do parts and move on but come back. I am so glad had read this in the review and in the instructions or would have thought it wasn't finishing a room. What I do find is that when I walk around now barfoot I can feel the difference in the feel of the floor. it feels like it did when I frist moved in (new hours just built). I think is due to one it does clean and 1 letting it run on a consistent basis it keeps the floor totally clean. Last night after have 30 people over for dinner my sister was still here and I had been bragging on the Roomba and wanted to show her how it works. I have a tree that doesn't have needle (Leland cypress) but litte pices you could see on the floor. I kicked Roomba on and let them watch how well it worked and all the little pieces were clean easy peazy. WHY do I only have it as 4 you ask. This is only due to the fact that I want to buy a 2nd base so I could just move the Roomba upstairs and not have the move the base but I can't find a base to purchase separately. I found bases but they aren't for this series or aren't the energy efficient version. THIS IS THE ONLY reason I have given it a 4 and not a 5.

Most often this Roomba fails to return to base for recharge leaving itself stranded. I have to manually return it to the base for charging. But when recharged the Roomba starts at the beginning of the job. The app does not enable the user to specify which area or rooms to be cleaned. So it most often it never really finishes cleaning the whole first floor. If i just want to clean the kitchen floor (or any other portion of the house) the only way is to block the Roomba using doors plus the infrared device but most often this doesn’t work. The lack of ability to control the area to be cleaned using the app is a major drawback in my opinion. Keep in mind it takes the Roomba about 3 hours to vacuum the entire floor. The roomba often gets stuck as it rams hard into my furniture. It has damaged the wood trim on my couch. Even though I has an map of the floor stored in memory, it just rams into furniture. I had friends arrive for dinner while the Roomba was cleaning. I used the app to cancel the job and send it home. But it just kept cleaning, ignoring the command. I pushed the home button on the unit but it still kept cleaning. Finally I had to pick it up and carry it to the base. Needless to say my friends were not impressed nor was I. Though we did have a laugh saying we don’t have to worry about “smart” robots taking over for humans if this device is representative of robots of the future. It seems like IRobot really skimped on the software and testing. Overall cleaning is just ok, but the product controls are a major disappointment. I would not recommend especially given the high price.

I believe this is the best time saver I have purchased. I love it. Possible cons that do not deter me at all: -It can be a tiny bit loud for very light sleepers. I am a very light sleeper and just do not run it while I am asleep. You can hold normal conversation while it is running. -I also do not run it without being around, because I do not want anything accidentally left out to cause a problem with it. -It cannot get between the toilet and the wall in one bathroom. -I pick up trash cans so that it can get fully around these slightly dirtier areas. *About once a week, I remove bathroom rugs, so I can make sure it is clean under them. I have noticed no difference with this. *We have a lot of doors that must be left open for it to get into the rooms and closets, so once a week I dust mop behind the doors to make sure it is clean. I have not been disappointed yet. I do not have indoor animals, and normally there is 4-6 adults/grown children here; but we do have between 10-14 adults and small children in our home 3-4 days a week. Other than the days the extra company is here, I let the vacuum run about every other day. The upstairs is around 1,800 sq ft. It takes between 2-3 recharges for it to do the entire upstairs- this takes a couple of hours for it to complete, including the recharges. I love that it cleans so well and gets under all my furniture, and sweeps up all the nooks and crannies etc. just like I do. I empty the dust container once a week. My floors always look amazing! We also have the robo mop. The combination is just what I have always wanted.

I've enjoyed several generations of Roombas, and each one has been a greatly appreciated luxury. I have always been impressed with their ever-improving functionality (trustworthy obstacle and terrain navigation, reliable parts, proficient vacuum performance) and accepting of their necessary physical limitations (small bin size, limited battery life and motor power). Regular maintenance and a daily routine has always resulted in Roomba keeping the floors incredibly tidy in a household of long hair, a giant double-coated dog, and a medium-hair cat. It's a little thing, but coming home after a 12 hour day at work to freshly cleaned carpets restores an inordinate amount of sanity. When I upgraded to the Roomba 960 after having the Roomba 650, I was especially excited for the new navigation sensors, WiFi update capability and improved monitoring software. Those were key in my choice to go for the considerably more spendy model. Those features have offered exactly what I was hoping for. Roomba 960 navigates efficiently and has no problem with the usual household obstacles, picks up a bin full of dust and small hairs every day, from hard surfaces and carpet alike, which keeps the air noticeably clearer and makes a huge difference for those with allergies.

what can I say was a bit hesitant to buy this one because it was a bit expensive. but it does a good job. very thorough in its cleaning. adjustable, accurate overall to the environment it views, and can adapt to new surroundings, objects very well. The parts are pretty easy to remove blockages, twisted wires, cords, string etc if any wrap up in it. the little 3 prong brush on the side can sometimes get stuff wrapped around it easily, but it also pretty easy to remove if need be. but its a bit annoying at time. Especially if u have new carpet like me. :P Only one complaint, but its minor, is that the container for the dirt/debris is a wee bit small, but minor inconvenience for not having to manually vacuum on your own :). My house is very clean, it does a thorough job. is it expensive yes. but its very good considering the price and what it does, and how well. One thing, make sure you have an elevated couch. that helps to get under there :P should be higher than the height of the roomba but even if it is tight the roomba can adjust. or if it seems to be getting stuck or caught on something, it does a very good job of getting itself out of trouble. Must say I am impressed, and pretty good investment and a good buy to be an early adopter of this type of automated technology.

I've been very happy with the Roomba 960 as soon as I opened the boxes in which it came. The packaging was neat and concise, and the protection pieces that needed to be removed for operation were clearly visible and relatively easy to remove. Setup was pretty simple and quick, and I was able to install the base underneath a coffee table I have located next to a wall. Operation is very efficient and smart. I had a Bobi Pet which always looked like it was lost and hardly ever could find it's base when done. The Roomba 960 keeps track of where it is going, where it has been, knows how to concentrate on problem areas, and never has a problem finding it's base. And, if its battery runs too low to finish the job, it returns to the base, recharges, then picks up where it left off. Maintenance up to now has been nice and easy. You empty the dustbin, shake (or in my case, blow) the dirt from the filter, and wipe the sensors clean after each run. There is no brush roller to clean. The iPhone app which can be used for controlling the 960 is awesome for seeing where the 960 cleaned, and lets you know when there are problems or when the 960 has finished doing a scheduled job, whether you're at home or not. There were several times I could not tell whether the Bobi Pet had worked on a job. Up to now, I feel like the 960 is worth every penny I paid for buying it.

I got my 960 roomba on sale for 450.00. I see they have raised the price. I LOVE my roomba. I recently renovated the entire house with hardwood floors so it was needed addition since I also own 3 Border Collies, the household also includes a husband. :) I opted not to have the automatic empty container which was a good choice for those who have dogs. I empty the bin and clean the filter with each use. It needs to be done. The time it saves me is incredible. I would advise that you limit any rug by your stairs as the roomba tried to commit suicide by falling down 10 stairs on the third day that I owned it. It was a low mat and the roomba pushed it over the edge of the stair and went down. I set my roomba for times that I am away from the house, so the event was unwitnessed, but lucky me....it was not injured. I love the I Roomba app which I can set on my I-Pad. The choice between the 960 and the 980 was easy. The only difference between the 2 is the amount of run time. 75 minutes for the 960 versus 120 minutes for the 980. They have made multiple updates to the earlier versions. I had a friend who lended me hers not sure of the model number but the vacuum rollers are much more pet friendly in dealing with the hair. So the roomba can go over low pile rugs easily....My roomba is my new best housekeeping friend.

Exactly what I wanted. We have shedding cats and pups who love to play outside—meaning lots of dried grass and leaves as well as muddy paw prints on both wood laminate and carpet. The IRobot does a great job cleaning these service items. It makes far less noise than the conventional vacuum and the pets are willing to stay in the same room without the wild scurry to escape that we have with our regular vacuum. However, I still deep vacuum the carpet every two-three weeks to remove ground in dirt. It does a great job cleaning under the sofas and chairs, only occasionally getting stuck—but the lil fella always beeps, talks, and emails me when this happens. I prefer to be at home when I run our Roomba to make sure he finishes the job. We have a large open great room with kitchen area and he usually runs out of power before finishing, and he happily heads back to recharge, sending me an email that he’s finished. So I frequently have to finish up what he missed. One charge is enough for three carpeted bedrooms and a long hall with a laminate floor OR most of the large living room/kitchen area (40 X 35 with kitchen area additional 10 X 20). All in all, I am satisfied with my IRobot Roomba as it allows me stay ahead of the surface litter that pets, gardeners, and humans track into our home.

I heavily researched the Roomba 900 series vs the Neato Connected prior to making my purchase. At the end of the day, I sided with iRobot, a robotics company who's been in business for over two decades longer than Neato, with a technology background. I must say, I'm extremely disappointed in the mobile application. It operates on dated, 2.4ghz WiFi bands only (5 ghz NOT supported), which has proven to be a much more serious issue for my household than I'd anticipated. The application is extremely limited in it's overall support of the 900 series devices, which is a huge disappointment as at the time of my purchase, the 900 series were the only robotic vacuums supported by the application. Aside from the WiFi and Mobile Application limitations, the robot itself performs admirably on my hardwood floors, frequently filling the dust bin with my golden retrievers pet dander. The bin size is small, but to be expected in my opinion. Battery life is average, at best, but I'm content with saving the $200 over the 980 and sacrificing the extra 20-30 minutes of battery life and carpet boost technology - literally the only major differences I'm aware of between the 960 and 980 series units. The unit cleans well, which at the end of the day is what matters. The only reason I'm not rating the unit higher is because the price is simply not justified given the lacking mobile application features and support combined with the dated WiFi connection limitations. Overall, I'd say if you have the chance to scoop up the 960 at a price point below $450, it's a solid buy. If not, look at Neato, or wait for the next model Roomba's which should be coming through the pipeline soon.

The Roomba, or as my two year old affectionately calls it "Beep Beep", has been a great help in putting off my routine vacuuming. While the Roomba is not meant to replace a traditional vacuum it definitely helps in delaying how often we use one. Our typical useage looks like this. Clean up toys and other objects off the floor where we want it to clean. Empty out the dust bin, sometimes it doesn't detect it is emptied and you have to wipe the sensors clean. Then set it off on it's way. We have a fairly thick/fuzzy carpet and it fills up every time. About 15-20% of the time it will fail to do its "job", typically because I neglected to pick an object up and it gets stuck in the rollers. It's suggested you wipe the sensors every time but I'm lazy, why else would I buy a robot to vacuum my floors for me. We do this every 2-3 days, unless the floor is particularly messy/dirty. We would otherwise vacuum about once a week (no pets), but we can now get away with doing it around once or twice a month. The ability to control it from your phone is nice, but you have to try to remember to pick up the floor prior to starting it remotely, so it either doesn't get stuck and/or it cleans the whole floor. Overall satisfied with the purchase, but would like to see them release more powerful vacuums that require less maintenance/cleaning in the future...or make another robot to clean it.
