The Roomba, or as my two year old affectionately calls it "Beep Beep", has been a great help in putting off my routine vacuuming. While the Roomba is not meant to replace a traditional vacuum it definitely helps in delaying how often we use one. Our typical useage looks like this. Clean up toys and other objects off the floor where we want it to clean. Empty out the dust bin, sometimes it doesn't detect it is emptied and you have to wipe the sensors clean. Then set it off on it's way. We have a fairly thick/fuzzy carpet and it fills up every time. About 15-20% of the time it will fail to do its "job", typically because I neglected to pick an object up and it gets stuck in the rollers. It's suggested you wipe the sensors every time but I'm lazy, why else would I buy a robot to vacuum my floors for me. We do this every 2-3 days, unless the floor is particularly messy/dirty. We would otherwise vacuum about once a week (no pets), but we can now get away with doing it around once or twice a month. The ability to control it from your phone is nice, but you have to try to remember to pick up the floor prior to starting it remotely, so it either doesn't get stuck and/or it cleans the whole floor. Overall satisfied with the purchase, but would like to see them release more powerful vacuums that require less maintenance/cleaning in the future...or make another robot to clean it.

    Great for hard surfaces

If you have mostly hard surfaces (tile, wood, laminate) the 960 is a great option to consider. It has all the features of the 980 except carpet boost and the newer motor. So far the 960 has met our families expectations. We have two dogs (border collie and a sheltie mix) who shed and a toddler. The 960 tackles all the hair and DUST on the hard surfaces. It does an alright job on the area rugs (I'd assume the 980 with carpet boost would be even better). If I could rate the app that goes with the robot independently it would score 2 or 3 stars. It's very basic and took 30-45 min to sync with the robot. So far the 960 is cleaning almost 1400 sq ft (multiple rooms) in about 65 min. Overall, I'm very pleased and looking forward to clean floors every day when I get home from work.

couldn't be happier with the Roomba 960

Purchased the Roomba after getting great review from my son. I couldn't be happier. I've had problems with my right elbow and the constant vacuuming with 3 dogs and 2 cats was painful. I have 2 large heavily shedding dogs and cats and had constant pet hair on the floor even with vacuuming twice a day. I haven't even taken my vacuum out since I bought the Roomba and my floors have never been cleaner. The dogs are not bothered by it they just climb up on their beds or couches and sleep while the Roomba makes its way around the house. I used the virtual wall barrier to keep Roomba from going down the hall to the bedrooms since that area was clean and it worked great. I was concerned at spending so much for a vacuum especially when I can easily fill a Shark vacuum canister with dog hair in one vacuuming at times and I have had no problems with the Roomba. It tells me when the canister...which is much larger than I expected..is full and I go empty it which is super easy and it goes on it's way. considering I bought at least 3 different pricey vacuums in the past that did little to help keep my floors clean this was the deal of the century for me. no more moving my heavy antique sofa or tables and he gets under my bed no problem. He does well with rugs even those with fringe. I have all hardwood floor and was so sick of the constant collection of dog hair everywhere. I can finally feel good about what the floors look like. I am able to start Roomba from my phone or send him to his home base from anywhere, but I haven't chosen to run him when I'm not home. Can't say enough about how happy I am with the purchase.

Too many flaws for the price

I really wanted to love this thing, but alas, I can't. It is very useful when it does what it is supposed to, but very frustrating when it does not. If this device was several hundred dollars cheaper, I would give it a better review, but it's very expensive, so I expect better consistency. The biggest surprise/disappointment for me was the fact that it can't go over a rug that has any black in it. For the money, this machine cannot differentiate between the color black and a "cliff." That is a ludicrous design flaw. How many accent rugs out there have black in them? As a result, it will find it's way onto the rug and then get stuck from fear of "falling off a cliff." You can cut pieces of paper and tape them to sensors to get around this until it looses the paper. Second of all, it has no idea how to navigate around a recliner. It always goes under it and will drive forward until it can't go any further. Instead of its program just backing itself back out, it tries to raise itself up to clear an obstacle it things is under it.... Very stupid AI again. As a result of these two flaws, it gets stuck every single day and has let to me just not using it. I have a $700 dollar paperweight. So very very frustrating. When I called support they said it was just the way it was designed....

    Changed My Life

This iRobot is the best purchase I have made in my 50 years on earth. It has changed my life and is better at reducing stress than any medication. This is not hyperbole. The thing is amazing. I come home to lines in my carpet. Do you know how happy that makes me?? I don’t have to stress over my daughter making a mess on the kitchen floor or the dog dragging in grass. Sid ( my Roomba) will take care of it while I’m gone. I bought this 900-level version over other/lower versions for several reasons: the “recharge” feature and the no-tangle rollers are two primary things that I wanted. When the battery runs down, Sid returns to the docking station, recharges, then resumes cleaning the house where he left off. The no-tangle rollers are a must for a household with women with long hair and a pet. This version also cleans multiple rooms and uses a grid pattern, so I get nice lines in my carpet, not random messiness. The recharge feature is a big deal. It takes a second charge for my 1500 sq ft house. And like I said earlier, the lines from the grid pattern make me happy because I’m obsessive that way. The only negative is that there are a couple of spots in the house that Sid perceives as “cliffs.” One of them is a portion of an area rug. So I put something over that spot so he goes around it. Some people say it doesn’t replace a regular vacuum, but they must have a killer vacuum because it DOES replace it for me.

We purchased this vacuum 7 months ago and have loved it. The dog fur in the kitchen is never a problem any more, though two golden retrievers generate enough fur that the bin in the vacuum needs to be changed daily. Regardless, it's much easier to do that than haul out the vacuum and vacuum by hand nearly daily. Unfortunately, the contacts between the vacuum and base failed and got corroded, rendering the vacuum unable to charge. Attempts to simply clean the contacts in hopes that the problem was dirt were unsuccessful. Further inspection showed there is actually corrosion happening. Once the corrosion was scraped off, the vacuum was able to charge again. The vacuum is not stored or operated in a particularly wet area, though there may be rare drips and drops in a kitchen. This is unacceptable to have corrosion within 7 months in a piece of equipment that should last years. I have contacted customer support in hopes that replacement contacts may be purchased, though I'm not holding my breath. Cannot recommend this product if it fails in the first 7 months unless customer support comes through.

This does a very thorough job of vacuuming our floors (hardwood, tile and dhurrie rugs). Takes about 2 hours to do about 2200 sf. I'm always amazed at how much it picks up even though the floors look clean. I did, however, not have a perfect situation from day one. It was taking several hours (4+) which just didn't seem right. I contacted customer service and they did everything they could to get the problem corrected. At first, they thought the battery wasn't holding the charge so they sent a replacement battery. It still was taking too long (I have a friend with 2 dogs and about the same area which usually took about 2 hours) and so I knew something wasn't right. I was often cancelling the job even though the app showed it wasn't completed. They then replaced the whole unit and now it works like a charm. Good to know that iRobot didn't hesitate to make it work since it's pretty expensive. I really wanted this to work well as I'd end up with a terrible backache after vacuuming. If there are rooms that I don't need it to do, I just close the door (e.g. guest rooms not used, pantry, laundry). App gives a map of what areas have been cleaned and you can customize the number of passes it makes. Very happy to have it. If only I had a robot to cook! Oh, wait, I do. It's my husband!

Finally bought this roomba after researching all available robot vacs. I was hesitant for awile because I thought why spend the money when i could just get off my butt and vacum myself. well, after using it now for several days can only say it was one of the best purchases i have made in a long time. for one, it gets to locations i could not with a normal vacum, such as under a bed or furniture. It vacums as well, if not better, than my upright shark vacum. I have a 5000 sq ft. home and it has done a killer job. I never realized how much debris was under beds, etc. until I emptied the bin of the roomba. It did my 1800 sq. foot basement in about 3 hours. it returned to base to recharge after about 1 hour, but was zero effort on my part. it is extremly easy to move from location to location. just let it go and forget. battery length depends on type of flooring. it has gotten stuck a few times where clearance under furniture was low, but not a big deal over all. all in all, I am very happy with this purchase.

    Gizmo

I bought Gizmo as a birthday gift to myself. I have three cats so track litter all over my living room floor and my Roomba (which I named Gizmo) is great at keeping that mess to a minimum. The first time you start it up, it will wander around randomly and bang into everything. It's mapping your space when it does so. Once it has a layout of the floor, it'll move in a more structured pattern. My one complain about the Roomba is that its bin is not very large, so even though all that Gizmo is cleaning is litter, it can only hold about 2-3 days worth before its bin needs to be changed. Not a big deal, but it also doesn't tell you that it's full until the middle of the cycle. The app is great; when I went out of town I was able to let my apartment-sitter know when there was a problem with Gizmo so he could easily fix it. If there is any problem with the Roomba, the app will tell you what the problem is and provide a video of how to fix it. It enjoy having it; using a regular upright vacuum scares my cats and they freak out whenever it turns on. Gizmo is small and not particularly loud, so they aren't afraid of it. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't able to clean consistently or isn't home all day and can't vacuum at night.

I am so in love with this thing! It is shockingly intelligent. I’ve had a different brand of robot vacuum before and this one is beyond comparison. It doesn’t get stuck on things, not even the small bath rugs! It literally maps out your house and knows exactly where it has and hasn’t been. My floors are constantly covered in dog hair from having 2 huskies. It was so frustrating before I got my roomba because I really don’t have time to clean my house every day. You can set a schedule for your roomba to clean at specific times, even when you aren’t at home! AND, I have a smaller home (1200 sq ft), so this doesn’t apply to me, BUT if you have a large home and the roomba runs out of battery before it finishes cleaning, it goes back to its charging station, charges for approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes or so, it then will come back out and continue where it left off with its cleaning routine. It’s so amazing that I have a feeling I’ll be coming home with the mop version soon.

This vacuum really almost had me sold on it, but a couple missing features convinced me otherwise. I really liked the idea of an app controlled robot vac that maps your house and allows you to remotely select a room for cleaning, for instance. When I read descriptions and reviews of this vacuum, I found myself believing that this was one of the features and went ahead and made the purchase. When I got home, I unfortunately realized this wasn't a feature of the 960 (or any iRobot vac, for that matter). I don't hold this against the 960 - I should've been more diligent in my research - but this was a feature I actually really wanted. I also thought the runtime for the battery was too short, given the shortcomings of its navigation. Around 75 minutes is actually a pretty impressive runtime considering its size, but even the improved navigation of the newer generation iRobot vacs still left it meandering aimlessly through my apartment necessitating multiple charges to get the job done for the day. And I guess I'm just not willing to shell out $200 more for the 980 that has a longer runtime. As a vacuum though? I was really impressed with its cleaning abilities - I realized I was a disgusting human being once I had to empty the collection bin. I'd recommend this for a smaller apartment, but not for larger apartments or homes.

I was very skeptical at first. We have 2 kids, 2 dogs, 4 cats and our house is 80% carpet. Against my better judgment I let my wife talk me into this Roomba 980. It’s been running daily While we are at work For a week. And I couldn’t be happier. If I would have known how well it actually vacuumed I would have probaby bought the i7 that self empties. It’s so nice coming home to vacuumed floors every day. It will help to do a good vacuum before letting it run. The first time it did the while house I had to empty it 3 times. But now that it’s running daily and keeping up with the pet hair it can do the whole job without filling up. Our 980 cleans about 800sqft/day. And usually needs to charge once while cleaning. Only the 800/900/i7 can redock, charge and resume a cleaning job automatically. Do unless you are only running it < 500sqft you will want this feature. The main take always for me. It works well on thick plush carpet. It transitions well between tile and bath rugs It works great on pet hair Navigation is accurate and efficient

We actually purchased the Roomba 860 .... it performed so well, we ended up purchasing this one as well. The 860 now runs in our master bedroom every day (it's awesome that it can get under the bed) and the 960 runs on our first floor - which is very large, and the ability for this one to return home and recharge and then pick up exactly where it left off makes easy work of our first floor - coming home to clean pet-hair free floors every day is awesome. We were completely skeptical that a battery powered vacuum that bounced around the house could perform anywhere near as well as our 120V dyson upright - but, after over a month of daily "maintenance" cleanings with our robot buddies - a pass through the house with our dyson upright yielded minimal amounts of additional "waste bin contents". We have a dog and a cat, and we have found that the ability to kick this little guy off every day at work maintains the floors (and the hair) well enough that a once a month vacuum with our upright won't yield any surprising piles of dust and debris - that's way better than what we had hoped for the robot. They clean very well - you will want to maintain them and clean the rollers and dust bin frequently (ours is full every day) - but the time savings easily offsets the cost, IMHO.

The day I purchased the roomba 960 I was very excited to set it up and get this thing cleaning. The initial start up was easy and there were no problems. That same night I purchased it the robot stopped working. It wouldn’t even turn on to tell me if it was charged or not. Upon some tinkering I took the battery out and put it back in and it seemed to work fine again. I determined that the battery wasn’t getting a good connection so I just tighten the screws to hold it in place better. After that it worked for a few weeks. The suction was good, it maneuvered the House well and I was happy with the amount of debris is was picking up. I was a fan of this model at that point. Now once again I’m having problems. Last night it keeps going back to base telling me that the bin is full when it’s completely empty and now today the roomba won’t even turn on again. I tried messing with the battery again but no luck. I am beyond frustrated with this thing that I have only owned for 2 months. For nearly $800 I of course would expect this thing to function the way it’s supposed to.

I reviewed and reviewed before purchasing the Roomba 960. Planned to get an earlier model, but so glad to have purchased this one. Vacuumed with my canister vac before starting this one and it still picked up lots more. So nice that it runs under furniture and beds to get to places you can't easily reach with canister or stick vac. Dogs in household and it does a great job with dog hair and dust/dirt tracked in. Dogs don't mind it at all, they will just move out of the way, when they see it coming, or, it just bumps into them and turns and goes another way. It is very quiet, not silent but quiet. Can easily work at my desk and be on the phone, etc with it running. Handles navigation from carpet to hardwood and throw rugs well. If throw has a really high pile, it will go around. If lightweight rugs curl up, it really tries to, and is usually successful in navigating around and dealing with this. So far, it has never gotten stuck! A great timesaver and so far has really improved the dust on furniture, so saves time there as well. The app control is easy to use and allows you to easily tell what is going on with the vac. It runs till it needs a charge, returns itself to the charger and when charged, will return to finish the job. Very pleased with the purchase so far!!!!

I had always heard about these things, and thought they were more a toy than anything. We were offered this as a wedding gift and I thought, what the heck, let's try it. Holy smokes I love this little thing! Wall-E does a surprisingly amazing job at cleaning. We have a 65lb White SIberian Husky that sheds EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. We also have dark hardwood downstairs and we need to sweep daily or face little fluff clouds everywhere. I can set a schedule for Wall-E to automatically clean everyday, or I can just remotely start it from my cell phone. It does a great job of hitting just about every corner and fits under most of my furniture. While you do get the "bin is full" notice pretty quickly (me especially since there's os much dog hair) you can set it to keep cleaning until it's done without issue. Easy to dump and clean, it easily finds it's dock station. I have not had any issues with it not finding it's way back home to charge. This thing is a time saver and I lOVE coming home from work to clean hardwood floors! Even though I got this as a gift, I will not hesitate buying one in the future. STRONGLY RECOMMEND!

Definitely keeps the house cleaner. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats and I am amazed how much dirt and hair this collects on a daily basis. We used to vacuum once a week and now run the Roomba everyday and the dust bin is full every day. The 2 negatives that I can say are it does get stuck somewhere about every third day. If we are now home, it will just die were it is at. It has wedged itself under furniture, kicked up a throw rug, got struct in the track of a slider, etc. The biggest issue is the cliff sensor, we had to remove an area rug in one of our rooms because it saw it as an abyss and would not enter the room. It was like the Chinese people on that glass bridge, terrified to immobility. I contacted Irobot to offer a suggestion to be able to turn off the cliff sensor in the App for those of us with a single story home and no stairs. I got a very lawyerly email back from them saying that if I had read the terms and conditions, I can not offer them any advice on how to improve their product.

Well, first of all, let me start by saying I live on a 41st floor that has a view to the beach, we love our view! So of course we open our balcony and spend some time there, with all the wind that blows that up high some dust is expected in the apartment, I used to sweep the floor every couple days, as much as I could (I'm a full time student and most of my down time I spend it studying, not cleaning!) the dust in the apartment was getting out of hands (we also have two dogs) so we decided to get Rhonda (yeah, that's her name) and she has been so amazing!!!!! The floor had never been so clean, the overall dust in the house has incredibly diminished, I clean her pretty much every time she tells me to, she's not too loud, but of course don't expect her to be completely silent.. and she goes pretty well between tile and carpet, not to mention she gets between the chairs in the dining room amazing (although I think she has something personal against the chairs cause man she loves to fight them!) oh, and I love the new update!! It shows a map of the areas she went around, no more little hairs on the floor or dust all over, now we can walk around in white socks and they don't get dirty! Love love love Rhonda! It was definitely money well spent :)

I tried the 805 model from Costco, and while I thought it was very good, it did get stuck pretty often because it feels its way by bumping into things. It would ram into a some bent chair legs or things and get stuck, and sometimes got hung over a drop-off in our living room. Most obstacles it did OK. But the worst problem was that it had trouble docking and I even had trouble orienting it to the dock since it doesn't have a very useful indicator when it docks. So we returned it and got the 960. The vision is very helpful in avoiding getting stuck because it doesn't ram into things... it just detours nicely. The more systematic back and forth is more reassuring; it seemed that the random patterns of the 805 meant that it spent much more time near the dock. The 960 has been very reliable at docking, but it's possible that it's because I realized I need to push the dock against the wall so the robot doesn't push it back. But maybe it's also the vision capability. We do tax ours by constantly moving upstairs or down, so I think that confuses its mapping capability, but it seems to remap readily so its not a problem. The bin fills up with hair and dustballs, so I know it's doing a job on our tile floors. All in all, we are very happy with the 960.

First the CONs: - The bin is a bit too small: One quarter bigger would be good but it is also nice that Roomba knows not continue when the bin is full - Battery life: Is good but not great. But the recharging feature is the bonus and almost makes battery life a non issue That's is for the CONs - and that's the reason why I'm giving it FOUR stars. Now the reasons why I love the Roomba 960: - Great cleaning quality - I was hesitant about the cleaning power of the 960 , but it definitely beat my expectations. Our home has been looking clean ever since I bought it. - Brains. I love watching the 960 clear obstacles and find its way around the house. - Noise. The 960 is definitely quieter than your average vacuum cleaner. I wouldn't say it's silent, but Roomba is the quietest Roomba we have ever owned. - Multi-room cleaning. The reason why I chose the 960 over the other models and has not let me down. - Easy to keep Roomba clean: Built into the app are video caring instructions and are super helpful Would I recommend it? Definitely yes. In fact, my only regret is not getting mine sooner
