iRobot Roomba Combo i5 Robot Vacuum and Mop
Registering and Pairing Issues: After charging the Roomba, I had difficulty setting it up because of two separate issues. It took over 20 minutes to receive the first verification email when I tried to register it with the app, and since it gave me the option to “send email again”, I clicked on that a few times. Finally it sent all of the emails at once. So, be patient – it may take a long time to get that email. Also, the app kept saying it could not detect my Roomba. I went through the steps several times with no results. Finally, I looked on the Internet for troubleshooting advice. Nothing on the iRobot site helped, but I found a lot of forums stating the same problem. Even though the instructions say that putting the Roomba on the charging dock will wake it up and the lights on the Roomba came on when I did that, I had to press the power button once before the app could detect it.
Installing the Combo Bin: Make sure you scan the QR code on the “Activate your Combo Bin” card during installation. I have read in several Troubleshooting forums that if you miss this step, you may have to start over from scratch.
Mapping your Home: Completing a mapping run is a lengthy process. With this model of Roomba, you can only save one map on your app, so make sure you include every room in your home. The first time, I only mapped part of my house (I had some doors closed, thinking I could add them later, but you can’t do that.) I had to delete that map to start a new mapping run. For some reason, I had 4 failed attempts at making a new map, but it was successful on the 5th try. Each attempt took between 3.5 to 7 hours, so it took me 3.5 days to get my house mapped. Keep your lights on in every room so Roomba can “see” landmarks. Pick up dog toys and anything else on the floor during the mapping run. Roomba will not clean while doing a mapping run, but it completes the mapping run faster that way. After the mapping run was complete, the app had set up dividers to separate areas that it thought were rooms and there was a label on each area called “Unnamed Room”. Because I have an open floor plan, some of the rooms were divided differently than how I wanted, so I edited the dividers. You can delete dividers you don’t want, move dividers, rotate them, and add new ones. After you get the rooms divided how you want them, you can edit your room labels (Living Room, Dining Room, Den, Kitchen, etc.) Both of these tasks were very quick and easy to do.
Dust and Mop Bins: The Roomba Combo i5 comes with 2 bins. One for vacuuming and a Combo Bin for both mopping and vacuuming. Use the correct bin for the correct job. You can set up the app so that Roomba will return to the docking station when the dust bin is full. You will receive a notification telling you it needs to be emptied. After you empty the bin, and replace it back in your Roomba, it will automatically resume the current job.
Vacuuming: You may choose one or more of your labeled rooms, or “Clean Everywhere.” I wanted to see how my edited room dividers were going to work out, so I chose “Dining Room.” The Roomba left the charging dock and went straight to the dining room and began to vacuum, deftly moving around the 28 chair and table legs. It also did a very good job at cleaning corners.
Next, I set Roomba to vacuum one or two rooms at a time. The Roomba did a very good job. After each session, I could look at “History” on the app and see how long it took, how any square feet were vacuumed, and it showed a map of my home with green coloring in the areas that were vacuumed. It covered every bit of space that it had access to. I was very impressed. When the battery became low, it returned to the docking station and showed on the app that it had a low battery and would return to the base to recharge. It also told me how long the Roomba would be recharging before resuming the current job. The app gave me the option to end the session, but I let it continue. After the allotted time for recharging, the Roomba automatically left the docking station and resumed vacuuming.
Mopping: Because I mapped my home, I was able to keep carpeted rooms separate from my wood and tile floors. Swap out the vacuum dust bin for the mopping Combo bin filled with water or a cleaning fluid from their approved list. Roomba automatically recognizes that you are going to do a mop job. Start a new job, choosing the room(s) you want it to mop. The Roomba vacuums while it mops, which is nice because that means you don’t have to vacuum first every time you want to mop. It did as well as expected. There were some spots in the kitchen that did not come clean, but that was only because they needed a little elbow grease to scrub them clean. However, it is nice to only have to go back and clean a couple of spots instead of hand mopping the entire floor AND cleaning the spots.
PROS:
Once you have it set up, you can send your Roomba on a job and forget about it, unless the dust bin gets full.
The Roomba lets you know when the battery is low, the dust bin is full, or if it gets stuck.
You can set up vacuuming schedules and can include one or more specific rooms in your home, or you can have it vacuum your entire home.
Roomba learns your rooms better the more you use it.
You can pause your Roomba and resume it later.
If the battery gets low, the Roomba re-docks, charges, and then resumes vacuuming.
Using History, you can see the areas vacuumed, the square footage, and how long it took.
Connects with Alexa or Google Home so you can use voice commands with Roomba.
Automatically updates new features with WiFi.
Navigates well around obstacles and barriers and does a good job at cleaning corners.
CONS:
* Set up instructions were lacking some important points. Registration verification should not take such a long time to send an email.
* The mopping feature is equivalent to sliding a mop across the floor with only a little pressure put on the mop (basically, the weight of the Roomba), so it won’t clean spots that need some scrubbing.
* It took me 5 attempts and 3 1/2 days to complete a new Mapping Run.

Great Vacuum, Worthless mop

I love this as a vacuum, so let me explain my 3 star rating. As a vacuum alone, I would give it 5 stars. As a mop, I would give it 1 star. So I averaged it out to 3 stars.
Now to the details. Once you download the app, setting up the vacuum isn't too hard. There was some difficulty initially connecting to the vacuum. The app said it was supposed to set up a network that I was supposed to connect to but it never appeared. I was stuck on this step for a while, and I couldn't seem to get out of it or wasn't presented with any alternatives. So I close out the app and restarted the process. It then connected directly to the vacuum and setup was easy after that.
On Wheels (that's the name the family gave it) initial run, it learned the house and created a map. Really cool. You can view the map of the house in the app, and then you can set up different zones and name them (kitchen, living room, etc.). Then you can program it to either clean everything or concentrate on one or two areas. Love it.
As for the effectiveness as a vacuum, it's awesome. My floors have never looked so clean. I have a dog and a cat, so pet hair is around constantly. With Wheels running around the house a couple times a day, there's very minimal hair on the floor (if only Wheels could get my couch...). It even effortlessly goes over the transition to the bathroom, does it's thing, and gets back out. So far, no issues with Wheels getting lost or not making it back to the base, which I experienced a while back with a previous model. Looks like my regular vacuum is going to get neglected....
Now for the bad. The mop feature is basically useless. First, it barely holds any liquid, and it comes out pretty fast. So it was nowhere close to having a wet mop pad for even half my house. Second, even if it did hold more fluid, I still wouldn't use it because it actually makes the floor worse. Streaks everywhere. I tried just water, a mopping solution, and Bona hardwood floor cleaner. Nothing really worked. I think it's difficult to make a mop out of this because there's very little weight to apply the pad to the floor. So I liken it to just lightly dragging a wet rag on the floor behind it. I definitely will not be using the mop feature.
So I would definitely recommend getting an iRobot Roomba, but save yourself some money and forgo the mopping combo model. It's not worth it.

Cleans hard to reach places

This is not my first roomba, I had a few of the originals and they have come a very long way. The cleaning power of this is very good. I did a test of letting this run on my carpet and then using my Dyson afterwards to see how much more it picked up. The Dyson did pick up some more dirt but it wasn’t to much which means the roomba can actually clean. When the Roomba is running it’s not very loud which to me equates to no suction/cleaning power. I was wrong though as it is pretty powerful at cleaning and can reach hard to reach places like under the bed. I ran this under my bed and the bin basically came back full. We have two dogs and it was mostly pet hair, but it’s nice that it can get to places I cannot.
I really struggled getting the vacuum setup in the iRobot app. My phone (iPhone 14 pro and Pixel 8) could not detect the vacuum. This was pretty frustrating as you really need the app to use all the features of this vacuum. I did finally get the vacuum to show up in the app on my iPhone, not sure what I did but I had to play around with the WiFi and Bluetooth until the phone found it. The app is really nicely done and easy to use. I would recommend doing the mapping of your home in the app. This will let roomba run around your home creating a map that can be used later on to clean certain spots of your home. I was really shocked at how good the map of my home came out after roomba ran around. Keep in mind it took about two hours for the roomba to map out my main floor. The app also always schedule cleanings on certain days and times, along with specific places you want cleaned. I would recommend doing a schedule and having it clean different areas of your house each day. A few times I would select clean the whole home and it ran for a while, then returned back to the base to charge to finish cleaning. So using the scheduling would eliminate the need for the roomba to stop and charge, and would hopefully cut down on the run time. My house is not that large and it takes me about 20 minutes to throughly vacuum the same area as the roomba. I cannot allow it to run when I’m at work as I’m worried my dog will attack it when its running. I also noticed that roomba can and will find cords and shoe laces and suck them up. So make sure those items are out of the way if running when not home.
I was excited that this could mop the floors. I attached the water cleaning bin and the app indicated that it was ready to mop. A warning popped up saying to make sure to remove rugs before running. This is where the mapping comes in as I was able to indicate to only cleaning the kitchen and dinning room since they do not have any rugs. I would say the mopping is okay since it doesn’t suck up the water. The mopping is a microfiber rag (detachable to clean) attached to the bottom of the water bin. So basically it’s running a wet rag on the floor but not sucking up any of the dirty water. This was fine to basically dust the floor, but I don’t think it would do a great job at cleaning a dirty grimy floor that requires extra muscle to clean.
The roomba is really not for me even though I do like it. Since I have to run it when I’m home, it gets frustrating hearing the vacuum bouncing into everything or getting itself trapped under the dinning room table. If I didn’t have a dog and didn’t work from home I would love this as I could run it when out and have a cleaned floor when I get home.
Overall this is a nice machine and does a good job at cleaning. I only gave it four stars because of the app setup, how the mopping works, and being frustrated at it getting trapped under my table. This would be great for someone who has a clean house that doesn’t have toys, cords, and other items on the floor that get in the way.

A Soggy Disappointment

I'll be honest - I don't mop my floors nearly as often as I should.
Okay - Fine! I've lived in my house for 5 years and I've never mopped...I don't even own a mop. ...But, we take our shoes off at the door...and it's not like we're eating off of the floor (beyond the 5 second rule).
Alright - so we've established that my floors desperately need to be mopped and that I'm lazy. It would seem that a robot mop would be the perfect solution to both of those issues! Sadly this iRobot Mop is a soggy disappointment.
iRobot has reached the point where it sells so many different models of Roomba vacuums that it is hard to keep track of which is which. I already own the J7 Roomba and thought that adding this i5 would be a nearly identical experience. Unfortunately the i5 simply is not nearly as refined as the J7 - most notably because the J7 navigates using an actual camera, while the i5 staggers around using infrared. I had assumed that I could simply share my existing house map with the i5 mop - sadly this was not the case. The i5 needed to go on a mapping run - during which it managed to get trapped underneath our Peloton Bike to the point where it seriously scuffed up the top of its beautiful robot face. Needless to say, it quickly proved that infrared is not as precise as the camera used by the J7.
I was surprised and disappointed to find that the Mop is simply a separate dust bin that has a small water tank and a microfiber cloth that attaches via Velcro. The actual Robot doesn't seem to have any special mop features. Fill up the small tank (in the dust bin) and the water immediately soaks down into the microfiber pad while the robot drags it across the floor. There is no pressure pushing down on the wet pad, just a light - uneven smear as the robot navigates around the house.
Newer Roomba Mops can actually lift the mop upwards out of the way when it senses carpet, but not this version. In order to avoid carpet, you must use the Mobile App to draw restricted areas for the mop to avoid. I found it easier to simply pick up area rugs and runners and let the Roomba fumble wetly around.
I would rate the Mop a 2 stars and the vacuum as 4 stars. If my limited understanding of Common Core Math is accurate - that averages out to 3 stars total.
If you're looking for a lower cost Roomba, the i5 is pretty good as a vacuum. It navigates well enough and does manage to suck up an impressive amount of dirt.
But, if your intention is to purchase the device to mop - I absolutely do not recommend. Save a boatload of cash and buy a Swiffer which will clean more evenly, more thoroughly, and even save time.

This Roombo combo i5 vacuum and mop is a great machine for putting aspects of your home cleaning routine on auto pilot! Whether you would prefer to use the mop for maintenance vacuuming followed by wet clean-up work or have the vacuum component handy to keep the heavier accumulation of dirt down in your carpets, rugs, and all other surfaces, this Roomba has you covered. This model makes more sense for my use case than the package that includes the self-emptying tower with this Combo i5 Roomba given the tower is not compatible with the combo mop attachment for-self emptying. So, I would say that if you are having misgivings on which one to go with, I would say get the self-emptying tower model if you are going to have the vacuum-only component swapped in more than 75% of the time. Otherwise, it really isn’t that difficult to just empty the collection bin on the Roomba yourself once it gets full!
As with other Roombas I have owned in the past, set up on this machine was incredibly easy. Downloading the iRobot app and scanning the quick start QR code on the quick start paperboard guide in the packaging takes you through all the aspects of setting up this little clean up machine step by step from advising you on how to assemble the home base charger and drip tray to getting you started on sending the Roomba out on its first Smart Mapping mission around your home. This task is crucial in order to assure that the Roomba gets a good idea of its surroundings and you as the owner are able to set up and edit the smart map according to areas you might want extra emphasis on cleaning or just want to have the Roomba leave alone completely. This first Smart Map run does take a while and the Roomba will not be cleaning during it; the Roomba will just travel around and map out rooms and obstacles. I left the Roomba in the format it came in out of the box which has it set up for vacuuming while it ran across the whole house mapping including on our carpeted floors. This process for our 1300 Square foot condo took a little over 3 hours including a pause to charge itself up given that it came out of the package with only 20% or so of a battery charge. So be prepared to give this machine ample time for set up, charging, and completing its smart mapping run so that you can enjoy all of its tremendous benefits!
The combo bin that allows the Roomba to vacuum and then mop in one go is truly a genius thing that does wonders for our hardwood and linoleum floors. It would be silly to expect this machine to handle the rigors of mopping up heavy mud or other dense, excessively soiled or piled-up messes, but the clean-up of just regular day to day or week to week accumulation is where this Roomba stands out as truly ingenious. In this set up, you just need to be aware to empty to the vacuum collection bin when it gets full (the app notifies you) and also you may need to check the mop pad once and a while and give it a good rinse to make sure it has picked up and packed any larger particles into the mop pad fibers. All of this said, I just love this attachment and the fact that I can just use water as part of the mop routine! I still use a Swiffer for when we have heavier soiling or want to implement a cleaning agent as part of hardwood floor maintenance, but I am enjoying just using water in the Roomba! It fills up easily right from your tap and it also will notify you when the water is getting low. iRobot does sell a very reasonably priced cleaning solution concentration called Braava Jet Hard Floor cleaning solution concentrate in case you are interested in getting some factory compatible cleaning solution for the Roomba!
A couple of tips and borderline cons I would mention about this Roomba model. First off, if you are going to use the combo bin with mop function, ensure that your home base charging station and drip tray for the Roomba is set up on a hard floor surface and that it does not have to travel over any carpets to start its mopping function. I noticed that when the mop pad is pretty sodden with water, it can take a long time to dry and the last thing you want to do is have your Roomba drag a wet mop pad over your carpeted floors to reach its mopping destination. Another matter of issue with the charging station and drip tray is it seems to like to move around a lot on my hardwood floor, so I may be getting some extra tacky anti-slide feet from 3M or something to stick onto the bottom so it doesn’t get bullied around so much by the Roomba when it comes on and off of it.
The next tip and borderline con I would mention is the smart map set up on this particular Roomba model has been annoying. I have had Roomba’s in the past like the J7+ that were a breeze to set up and appeared to have perfect accuracy on the first try of getting the layout of our home. Additionally, it obeyed the boundaries I set in place and never wavered. This i5 Combo has been rather refractory in this process and I even had to swap in the vacuum bin and send it on a brand-new mapping run in order to get it to have a more accurate picture of my home.
A tip before you set it up for its mopping function by swapping in the combo bin is to ensure that you send it on some “dry run” vacuuming missions to each of your designated hard floor surfaces to ensure it actually understands and accurately gages the boundaries. I was horrified when my Roomba was mopping and it suddenly jumped a boundary and started dragging it wet mop pad over my carpet! Yikes. I got that boundary line figured out and haven’t had issues since, but just be aware that there might be some trial and error to this process.
Overall, I think that this Roomba i5 Combo delivers exactly what I would expect and more for a product making these promises at this price! It offers the means to maintain a clean home and with a little time spent getting it dialed in right, can save a lot of manual labor hours for maintaining the cleanliness of your floors!

I am a big iRobot fan and I have 5 robots already purchased from Best Buy so I’m a little biased. This is the first combo robot I’ve used. I have J7+ on all my floors and an m6 on the bottom main floor where there is heavy foot traffic. I’ve been very happy, so I was stoked to try running the J5 combo before I invested in a full combo system for the floor.
One of the reasons why I think it’s a great thing to have a combo iRobot is that the robot knows where it has been. Yes, iRobot advertises that the communications between robots is pretty good where a vacbot can go then tell a mopbot to go, but they don’t’ share maps and more importantly, obstacles, because the bravvas currently do not have the camera technology the J series has so no POOP warranty for you on the mopbots that aren’t combo J series! (it’s a darn good warranty)
When you start the bot, it automatically offers to download both a software update and a map from your previous bot. This saves time if you already have iRobot bots. If you don’t, then you’ll need to do one or more mapping runs. This particular bot needed to be run for a couple of days before I felt like it was doing as well as my m6.
One thing that is annoying is that the combo bin seems to have a much smaller vacuum bin. That means you’ll have to empty it out a lot if you don’t upgrade to the clean base or the combo clean base (a must for the future).
I filled the combo bot with iRobot juice. It was fairly unclear how many capfuls I’d need to put in and mix with water so I did it in a pyrex to the correct ratio. This is a miss for iRobot because there are still iRobot Brava jet bottles out there. I guess if you use Bona floor cleaner in the ready-to-use you won’t need to worry about it too much.
One thing I noticed that was very different from my other iRobot mopbots is that the combo bin leaks a bit. Be aware if you are using a high concentration cleaner you don’t want to leave a puddle with. The wicks seem to be the same design as the removable wicks on the Bravva 380 so I’m hoping that they are replaceable too without a complete replacement of the bin. Also, DO NOT TURN THIS BOT UPSIDE DOWN WITH A FULL FLUID BIN. I had the stopper in there correctly but it still completely leaked all over the bot as I was inspecting it.
So If you’re familiar with iRobot mopbots, they generally go back and forth when they wick fluid like the 380t, or they spray fluid like the m6. This bot wicks but doesn’t go back and forth so if your floor isn’t perfectly level, you will get some dry, uncleaned spots. I changed how tight it cleaned but it didn’t help much for our 1880’s wood floor. We still had some uncleaned areas that the m6 always cleaned.
You can’t select this bot as a standard mopbot in the current app from iRobot, so if you were planning on running it in a pair with a vacuum only I series or older J series, you currently can’t select it to mop afterwards. You can however, ask an older mopbot from iRobot to clean after the combo J5 so that would mean a really really clean floor.
For vacuum, it’s just great. iRobot’s logic is pretty mature and they are the granddaddy of cleaning robots. You can see all the other reviews for the vacuum quality. It’s similar strength and logic to a J7 or J7+ if you are familiar with those.
As a mop… well it’s faster than the m6, but it doesn’t mop as well or as thoroughly in comparison. One issue is that you really have to go into the map and tell it where the no-mop zones are. If you don’t do this, you’ll have rugs that are pushed around or are slightly wet. The AI of the bot currently doesn’t catch all rugs and woven mats so this is crucial if you are having the J5 as your primary mopper and have the combo bin installed at all times.
If you don’t have an m6 or a mopbot at all, it’s more than acceptable and will probably get you on the addictive road of adding robotic cleaner iRobot pets to your home. I think the ultimate super clean pair would be a J5/J5+ combo along with an m6.
I can recommend this bot to those that don’t want to make the full investment that includes the clean base. One of the things that makes these robots so awesome is the automated cleaning without the clean base we typically can have it go on 5 runs before emptying, with a clean base, you could go up to 6 months. This bot IS compatible with clean bases when you also upgrade to the appropriate bin, so you have an upgrade path. Just pick this up if the features make sense to you. It’s pretty great!

The Roomba i5 Robot Vacuum is a power little unit.
I own robot vacuums from both Samsung and Bissell. They were ok units, but Roomba blows them out of the water. I guess there’s something to be said for going with the original at the end of the day.
The first thing you need to do is download the Roomba app. You will need this to set up the vacuum.
Then you want to load the machine from the box. You will need to find a spot in your home for the “home plate” to be. The instructions (included) show the idea measurements for the clearance so the vacuum to operate smoothly.
I did have issues with syncing the vacuum with my Android phone. I tried several times to get the app and vacuum to connect. After so many tries, the app will then offer you an alternative method to connect. That’s what I ended up using and it finally worked.
The battery life is strong. My other robot vacuums would peter out about halfway through a cycle. This robot must be related to the Energizer Bunny, because it kept going and going.
It almost ran too long for me. I kept waiting for it to quit or to need to be emptied. I finally had to go and check it. It held a lot of debris crammed in the cup. It even picked up larger debris that my normal stick vacuum wouldn’t pick up. I finally put the machine back on the home plate to charge. I want to say it ran a couple of hours before I sent it home.
I tried to resume the job the next day. Unbeknownst to me, the Roomba knocked over a broom that was in the hallway and got stuck on it. I heard it beeping from the other room and couldn’t get to it right away. Eventually it shut itself off. The app didn’t send a push notification or anything letting me know the issue.
This unit is powerful and attractive. It does a great job for us.

The iRobot Roomba i5 has some notable positives, making it a reliable choice for automated cleaning. The auto-mapping feature in the app takes a while to complete (about 3 hours in my experience on a ~1000sq ft level of my house) but it was well worth it. It excels at cleaning on both carpet and hardwood surfaces, providing a thorough and efficient clean on different floor types. Being able to schedule frequent cleanings with this Roomba has been helpful in keeping on top of vacuuming and mopping. As a dog owner whose Australian Shepherd is in shedding season, this robot vacuum has been able to keep the dog hair tumbleweeds at bay. Battery life was pretty solid and the Roomba is able to automatically align and dock itself on it's charging base to charge when needed.
However, there are a few improvements that would elevate this robot vacuum. The Roomba i5 lacks advanced obstacle detection, occasionally getting stuck on furniture or other objects. This in combination with a lack of live mapping meant I had to search the house and free the vacuum when it got stuck on an obstacle rather than relying on real-time tracking from the in-app map. I ended up having to do a sweep of my house for obstacles each time before the Roomba ran its cleaning program. Furthermore, the cleaning time seems longer compared to some other more expensive robotic vacuums I've used in the past, which may be a drawback if you're looking for quicker cleaning sessions. Overall, the Roomba i5 is a great entry into the robot vacuum space at its price.

iRobot Roomba Combo i5

I received the iRobot Roomba Combo i5 Robot Vacuum and Mop, has a modern and sleek design. The black and silver finish gives it a premium look. It’s compact, which means it won’t take up much space when not in use, it can easily glide under furniture, reaching those hard-to-clean spots.
One of the features of the Roomba Combo i5 is its ability to switch between vacuum and mop modes. this means you don’t need two separate devices for your cleaning needs. The vacuum mode work very good on all floors, but the mop feature is great for light wet dusting the floors as it just slides across the floor with no pressure, so if you need any area for scrubbing this will not work.
If you have hardwood floors, tiles, or carpets, the Roomba Combo i5 adapts to different floor types, ensuring optimal cleaning. The interchangeable bin system means that depending on whether you’re vacuuming or mopping, the device will use the appropriate bin. It also detects obstacles and navigates around them, ensuring no spot is left uncleaned.
Overall, it is a good smart cleaning product depending on your needs.

Ok first off my cat hates it. She loves hanging under the bed and when IRobot starts cleaning she glares at it and goes to the window.
This is the second smart cleaning robot I’ve owned and it gives me an ability to do a fair evaluation.
This iRobot is very fairly priced in my opinion as the other one was more expensive and had a few features that we never used (camera to follow cleaning). You won’t get any gimmicks with the i5 what it provides is EXTREMELY good strong cleaning! A great app that lets you decide how to use it how many times to loop the cleaning, once is enough for us, a very strong long lasting charge and my favorite… NO BAGS that you have to purchase every few months! So it won’t cost you more than the initial price! This little angel of a robot vacuum does such a great job and is so smart that even the cats water bowl doesn’t have to be moved, it learns so fast and you can almost see it “think”.
Our other one was having trouble going up an uneven raised carpet to the other room but this one is strong and limber and has zero issues.
Cats hate it (initially) but you will love it!

This is review of Roomba Combo j5 Robot Vacuum & Mop in Graphite color.
At glance at core of the vacuum’s purpose, it does clean well. Its robot aspect does good support to map, avoid objects while cleaning, returning to the base.
The package includes:
1. The vacuum itself
2. Base Charging Station
3. Filter
4. Sweeping Brush (1 extra)
5. Combo Bin
6. Drip Tray
7. Microfiber Mopping Pad
8. Line Cord.
How long take to charge the battery to full:
I couldn’t find information of how long take, but from the usage, it took 1hr 24 min to fully charged.
How long take to vacuum (data from the usage and from the App):
A) With Bin for Sweeping Only: 1 Hour 6 Min to cover area of 822 ft2
B) With Mopping Bin: 1 Hour 55 Min with 47 Min and covered 769 ft2
C) With Bin for Sweeping Only: 25 Min to cover area of 191 ft2.
As side note, in some cases, it has Pause time that I couldn’t notice how it work but it add to the total time.
How often the bin need to be emptied:
The Bin is small that depending on how dirt is the space, it can fill very fast needing manually empty. From the application can set the option to continue working or stop and return to the base.
Using the combo bin to mop and vacuum, does it stop if it run out of water:
No. The vacuum using combo bin, it mop and vacuum. As it continue picking up on dirt, if the water bin is empty, it does following:
1. It continue and from the Application doesn’t have any option to control either to pause and return to the base
2. From the application can’t have visibility to the level of water either how much remain or if it has emptied such manually to pause and fill the tank.
What type of functionality includes via App:
1. Scheduling by Time, By Room and frequency
2. Map First Only function which allow to perform mapping only which is faster process.
3. Map while Vacuum
4. Edit label of the mapped rooms.
5. History
6. Add specific room names to Favorite dashboard allowing to Start from main screen
What does well from short time of usage:
1. Avoiding obstacle does work but sometime sort of not. In some cases, observed the vacuum avoided a doll on the floor. But it didn’t a shopping bag in the square shape. It did what does when approach a wall that is softly touch and bounce back.
2. Touching the wall or furniture: as mentioned above it touch sort of soft way and bounce back. Compared to other brand that sort of crash and damage furniture, j5 does bit better.
3. Human input to improve object recognition. Once it complete, via application checking the result, it ask to confirm either objects found during the process are temporary, or object to avoid then update to the database as optional.
4. Emptying the bin is bit easier compared to other brand. As it place for charging, the bin side stay at front opposed to the charging center. This help not having remove the entire vacuum in order remove the bin and place back.
5. Easy to set from app to start the vacuum a specific area. It does cover only that specified room name and return to the base.
6. Easy to specify which part of area not to vacuum or not to mop. This only work if the room name is well defined from the mapped area.
What doesn’t work well:
1. The bin is too small hence it is for short space or space with not much of dirt to pick up, small space to mop. Hence if use case is opposite or largely bigger, j5 is not for those who leave the house for work and comeback at night, as the vacuum wouldn’t have completed covering entire area.
2. The mapping doesn’t work well in the beginning or first couple of run. In the completed work, it include map option to see covered area. But it is not shown until after several run.
3. A bit noisy, but after having used two different brands with same issue, it seems universal subject. But this affect for those if work from home that require online meeting and attempt to clean the house.
To conclude, it does well vacuuming as robot. It has power for pickup dirts and mop well directed via App. It does recognize obstacles reasonably ok. But for being a vacuum without self emptying base, it is not for every use case and limit to users with small space or who reasonably maintain clean such doesn’t need to pick up too much dirt that full the bin fast.
Then the human input to improve object recognition, depending on preference might not be helpful as require to monitor constantly the result and manually intervene which is bit opposite to the idea of robot and automation.
So it is recommendable but for specific users base space and cleaning habit.

I have purchased a few very good iRobot Roomba Robot vacuums in the last ten years or so. I have been very pleased with the quality of the units and the jobs that they have done. I have been amazed at their accuracy in mapping the areas to be cleaned and the efficiency in the patterns that the Robots have developed to perform their extensive cleaning routines.
When I saw this iRobot Roomba Combo i5 Robot Vacuum and Mop, I was excited to try out a model that did mopping as well as vacuuming. So, when the Combo i5 arrived, I hurriedly read the minimal instructions on the Getting Started card, downloaded the current application to my cell phone, then went about locating an appropriate place to stage the unit.
Because the Combo i5 does mopping as well as vacuuming, the instructions say to locate the Home Base charging station with the Drip Tray installed onto a hard surface floor, near a power outlet in an unclutter area with plenty of clearance and with good WiFi coverage. I was hard pressed to locate such an area, since half of my floors are carpeted and the majority of the hard floor areas don't have available power outlets. I ended up deciding to place the charging station in the guest bathroom between the pedestal sink and the toilet where I have an available outlet and just enough clearance to meet the Getting Started card's called clearances of 1.5' to the left, 4.0' to the right and front of the charging station. At least it is in a position that no one will trip over it and it is in close proximity to my mesh WiFi unit, though this is not the most desirable of locations.
I placed the Combo i5 Robot onto the Home Base and let it charge. I used that time to pick up items such as shoes, boxes, cords, and loose rugs and fringe that might impede the iRobot's progress in mapping the area. In a while, the Combo i5 made a sound to let me know that it was ready to complete setup in the iRobot application.
I had no trouble connecting to the Combo i5 with Bluetooth and WiFi and it took very little time to complete the setup in the application. I gave the application premission to use precise GPS positioning. Now it was time to let the i5 do a mapping run.
With my other iRobot units, mapping usually took about 45 minutes to an hour. With this Combo i5, it took over 4 hours with the i5 returning again and again to the guest bathroom, seemingly to get its bearings again and at least once to recharge. It also seemed to go over the same areas in the different rooms and after multiple times it still ran into the same table and chair legs, not seeming to actually learn the layout.
The mapping session had taken so long that I let the Combo i5 charge overnight, as it was too late in the evening to go on. The next day, I went through the application to set boundaries and to name the rooms on the map that the mapping exercise had created. This had a slight learning curve.
One day before setting up and running the i5 mapping, I had my current robotic vacuum from another brand do a full house vacuuming. I wanted to see what the i5 could do in comparison.
Once editions to the map were completed, I let the Combo i5 run a full house vacuuming program. It took over two and a half hours to complete. The paths it took seemed repetitive and not logical, with a whole lot of bumping into unmoved furniture going on. Again, the i5 returned to the guest bathroom multiple times, not to recharge, but to seemingly get its bearings.
I was not happy with what I was seeing. None of my other robotic units had had this kind of difficulty. I was loathe to allow it to carry a container of liquid for mopping, if it were to have this kind of navigation problems. I don't want a wet mop on my expensive carpet.
The one bright spot was that when I emptied the i5's container, there was an incredible amount of dust and debris in it, especially for a floor that had just previously been vacuumed. So, it definitely has the power to do the vacuuming job well.
Maybe the software needs an update or maybe I just need to allow it to map again. Whatever the issues, I was not impressed.
From this experience, I would not suggest this Combo i5 model to a friend or family.

The little helper that does it all

The iRobot is your one stop shop little helper that is here to help tackle most task. While it excels at vacuuming carpet while leaving uniform lines it begs to ask the question how well does it perform while mopping hard surfaces?
Out of the box you get everything you need to help get you set up. Set up is done through the free app and no additional paid services are needed. Through the app you can choose a name for your little robot and birth date as well. But on a serious note the app allows more functional services such as designating cleaning schedules or areas that are off limits. You can check the status of the unit to see if its waste container is full and or if the unit gets stuck or runs in to any problems it will send you a push notification letting you know that it is in distress. Speaking of the waste bin, the i5 has a upgraded bin allowing more waste to be captured which is a plus for those of us that own pets. The rollers appear to be tangle free and so far the need to have to cut out hair from the rollers has not been an issue. The iRobot does use some type of smart sense technology which when it detects deep embedded dirt, it will actually go over the said area working itself back and worth trying to release the debris. When first setting up the unit it will initially run around the room in a very erratic kind of way, but what it is doing is trying to map out your floor plan and figure out where all its obstacles lay. This is a very key feature and important to note that once you place the home base you need to make sure you do not move its location as it can cause issues with the way the robot cleans. Once the floor plan is mapped you can see through the app the floor plan that was created for you. Lines will become more uniform leaving a side by side vertical pattern. Now this unit does double up as a floor mop robot as well and while i have not been impressed by how well any of the other manufacturers out there have performed, this design is definitely a cut above the rest. The biggest issue i have run into with floor mop robots is the fact that most of the time all they do is make a bigger mess by simply spreading the dirt rather than actually cleaning it up. This unit has a separate attachment that you add on when it comes time to mop which includes a separate tank to add your cleaning solution. While Roomba does make dedicated robots specifically for mopping, this unit still does a adequate job and actually cleans up the floors rather than just push the dirt around. Is it the best cleaning solution out there? No, however it does a very good job and will definitely leave a noticeable difference which can be helpful for those that are pressed on time. The special woven cloth greatly assist in making sure that all dirt and debris is picked up from the cleaning solution. And should you run out and need to re-up some supplies, all supplies can be easily ordered through the app. This is a great unit to have for those pressed on time looking for a little added help. Out of all the self cleaning robots out there Roomba is truly one of the best if not the best.

Sensors, Storing Data, and Learning are Key

The iRobot j5 vacuum and mop works better than other robotic mopping devices that I have owned. It is designed with two interchangeable bins, one for when you want to vacuum only and the other for when you wish to vacuum and mop. The robot is sophisticated enough that it seems to learn quickly, and it has been designed with reactive sensors that tell it to avoid stairs, a ‘dirt detect’ sensor that directs it to give more intensive cleaning to dirtier areas, and ‘precision vision navigation’ that directs it away from pet accidents, electrical cords, etc. It starts by mapping out neat rows, going around furniture, and creating various maps of the different spaces with your home. It avoids electrical outlets but navigates thresholds well. It has a camera on board that helps it detect, learn, and store the information of all areas for which it will be directed to perform vacuum and mopping tasks. The camera and sensors tell the iRobot to give more attention to the dirties areas, and when the battery runs down it will navigate itself back to the docking station and recharge. A full recharge takes about 2 hours and lasts approximately 75 minutes.
The vacuum is designed with 4-stage cleaning that works primarily by starting with the built-in edge brush which pulls the dirt underneath the device and toward the roller brushes where the suction, especially over carpeted areas, takes over and deep cleans the carpet pile. These four stages are the edge-sweeping brush, dual multi-surface rubber brushes, powerful suction, and mopping. It is also designed with a high-efficiency filter that can capture and trap 99% of cat and dog allergens. If hardwoods or tiles need moping, then the alternate bin can vacuum and mop at the same time. This bin has the capability of being filled with various cleaning floor products depending on whether your floor is tile, porcelain, wood, etc.
There is another attachment that can be purchased separately or packaged with the product and sold as J5+ Combo. This extra attachment is really a different docking station that Roomba refers to as a Clean Base. The Clean Base is designed to automatically empty the dust bin by sucking it clean when the iRobot docks. It does not work with the Combo Bin, but it works with the Vacuum Bin and can handle up to 60 days’ worth of dirt in a dust free manner. There is a much bigger financial saving when the Clean Base is purchased with the iRobot J5 unit than there is when it is purchased separately, especially when the items are on sale.
The vacuum robot automatically downloads new software and with the interchangeable Combo Bin, it will vacuum and mop. The app helps you designate certain areas or through the app you can command a whole house cleaning. It can also be controlled vocally by using either Alexa or Google Assistant. With the app, schedules can be created, keep-out zones established, and complete mapped areas of the whole house, or designated areas that are room by room are created.
I would recommend the iRobot J5 Combo if you were looking for a robotic vacuum because it has this additional mopping feature. If you can afford the clean dock station and purchase the iRobot j5 Combo as the iRobot J5+ Combo, then I would probably do so. The self-dumping of the vacuum bin is an appealing feature, especially since it can store up to 60 days’ worth of dirt and eliminates dust over having to manually dump the vacuum bin. There is a 1-year warranty on the product.

This is my first iRobot vacuum cleaner, and so far, I am satisfied. The charging port has a very sleek design, and it attaches to a floor protective tray. Setting up the device on your smartphone is quick and simple. When the machine does a complete cleaning routine, I get a notification on my device. The smart mapping did an excellent job drawing the area around my kitchen and nook. The mapping was over 95% accurate. With smart mapping, you can assign a custom room name to each room in your house. The kitchen area and the nook are next to each other with a diving wall, but with smart mapping, I was able to divide both areas into different sections for the iRobot. The performance of the vacuum is excellent; it can pick up many small particles from both hardwood and tile floors. The two green roller brushes and the cleaning system do a great job of picking up debris and placing it into the dust bin. It is very impressive how the robot covers the entire mapped room without missing a spot. For bigger areas, it may take longer to clean, but at least it is being done by the robot. During certain jobs, the battery needs to be recharged, but the great thing about the robot is that it doesn’t require you to do anything about it because it does it itself. The mop pad does a great job for small, not heavily stained areas. To clean the pad, you can wash it by hand or place it in your washing machine. For tougher stains, you will still need to use a regular mop, but at least you won’t have to mop the entire area. Once in a while, I mop the entire floor with a regular mop. The vacuum and mop combo design is great for everyday cleaning and maintaining your floor. The best part of owning a robot vacuum is that it can clean your floor when you’re not home. I have a small dog, so to avoid it barking at night and waking me up with the iRobot vacuum, I only have it clean when I am away. If you want to constantly keep your floor clean, an iRobot is the way to go.

The Next Cleaning Robot Evolution

The Roomba Combo j5 is the next evolution in robot vacuum technology. While it definitely looks and feels like a sidegrade or maybe even a step backwards aesthetically compared to the older i or s series vacuums, there’s a few key improvements on the j series that bring Roomba to the next level of home robot vacuum technology.
First off, the biggest difference is that the j5 now has a combo vacuum and mop functionality. I bought the Braava jet m6 to pair with my s9+ a few years ago and honestly it was a huge disappointment. Not only did it do just an average job of “mopping”, it struggled mightily with thresholds. The Roomba j5 does a much better job of handling thresholds by placing the mop component on the back of the unit so the wheels pull it and raise up so the unit doesn’t get stuck on a threshold. There’s also a different combo tank that needs to be used for wet/dry functionality. Overall the mop function works pretty well, but it’s not as good as a dedicated floor mop that you push around obviously.
Another major update is that the j5 no longer does the “random” pattern when it cleans, it more reliably cleans in an organized row and grid fashion which I know was a common complaint on previous Roombas. It still got things clean, but I guess people were just put-off by the unpredictability of the pattern in which older Roombas like my s9+ would clean.
In that same vein, the j5 uses different technology for collision and object detection. It seems to be much more reliant on its camera, requiring lights to work properly, where older Roombas would just bump into stuff to map out a floor and then remember and go from there. It does seem to negotiate objects and furniture better, and also seems to use some kind of AI for image/collision recognition over time.
The iRobot Home app has always been stellar and it’s been updated and still stands out as industry leading. I was able to detect and set-up my j5 quickly, although it failed 2x the default method it was able to use the 3rd “Let’s try another way” and quickly connected using my iPhone 15 Pro Max. After that, it asked to import my existing floor maps and I was off and running with at least a starting layout for the j5.
As for the j5 itself, I do wish I got the cleaning/filling base so I don’t have to deal with cleaning the unit myself. I really love the self-emptying base on all the various vacuums I have that have it and also with my s9+. Also, the higher-end j units also have the ability to fully retract the mop head to get them out of the way to transition between hard surfaces and rugs/carpets, so that is something to consider.
Lastly, like I mentioned, the unit doesn’t feel as premium as my s9+ but maybe because it’s only the mid-line j5. For someone who wants the best, consider getting the j9+ with emptying base. The cleaning features of these Roombas are great if you run them consistently and clean up big messes as they happen. They’re great if you have kids and pets and help keep your spaces tidy, as long as you maintain them and replace the parts out as needed.

This little robot has officially made me lazy… and I love it. It vacuums, it mops, and it actually does a good job! I set it on a schedule, and my floors stay clean without me lifting a finger. The mopping feature is surprisingly effective for everyday messes, and it handles pet hair like a champ. It’s quiet enough to run while I’m working, and the app makes it super easy to control. Worth every penny for the time it saves me.

Solid Robot Vacuum

I have been using this Roomba j5 robot combo vacuum and mop for several days now and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the vacuum feature is fantastic. It has powerful suction, a large dustbin, and a smart navigation system. It can clean different types of floors, carpets, and rugs, and it can avoid obstacles and stairs. It also works with Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can control it with your voice or your smartphone. The app is solid and provides one of the best experiences I’ve had in the robot vacuum space. The vacuum isn’t too loud, and it can run for up to 90 minutes on a single charge.
Unfortunately, I found the mop feature a bit underwhelming. It has a small water tank, which needs to be filled frequently. It suggests specific recommended cleaning fluids if you want to avoid streaking, of which, not even a sample is included in the package. The mop doesn’t have a scrubbing function, so it can only wipe the floor with its own weight. Although you can map “no mop” areas, it can sometimes mop over carpets or rugs as it navigates– especially if it needs travel through “no mop” areas to get to the desired location. I found that it works best when just carrying it to the mop location and pausing it when done to manually return to the dock.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this unit comes equipped with a camera. As it travels around, it will take pictures of obstructions. They are later presented to you in the app for review. There you can either flag them as a “no go” zone or just temporary obstructions. Although this is a cool feature, the idea of it travelling around snapping pictures in my home to send them back to a server somewhere may not work for everyone.
Overall, the iRobot j5 is one of the best vacuums, with one of the better app experiences. I enjoy using it with Google Home and scheduling regular cleanings. However, the clumsy mopping feels like a miss to me. If you are primarily looking for a best in class robot vacuum with the need for occasional mopping, this might be the best choice for you.

I'm no stranger to robot vacuums and mops, but surprisingly, I've never had a Roomba brand. This is the quietest robot vacuum I've owned, and I feel like it moves quicker than other ones I've used.
The setup is probably the easiest Robot Vacuum i've set up. You just pull it out of the box, download the app, plug it in and you are good to go. This vacuum also works on my mesh WiFi system with 5 ghz internet. Normally, devices like this require to be placed on a guest network restricted at 2.4 ghz when you have a mesh WiFi system, so this was a nice surprise.
We vacuum pretty much every day, so I was pleased to see the amount of dust and hair the vacuum picked up on it's first cycle, and then again on the second cycle. It has very strong suction.
The mop feature was confusing at first to use. I couldn't find any instructions on how to use it in the box, and I struggled to find instructions online as well. Basically, you replace the dust canister with the mop canister, fill it with liquid and then the Roomba will automatically detect the new canister and start mopping. The mopping feature is a very light mop, as it doesn't suck the dirty water back up. I also noticed some excess mopping solution leaked out while docked, so I would recommend you keep this docked on tile floors if you have the option.
The Roomba unfortunately does not come with any mopping solution, and only comes with one cleaning pad (which can be washed).
The thing that surprised me the most about this vacuum is how well it mapped my house in just a few runs. I keep the doors to my bedroom shut, but you can see in the photo that it automatically (and accurately) named the rooms of my house, which was stunning. It seems to be among the smartest vacuum robots out there.
Overall, really happy with this. The simplicity of the setup and the ease of using the app make this vacuum a treat to use. My only complaints are the lack of instructions on mopping, and the excess solution that spilled out the few times I mopped.

There is a lot of good things to say about this Robot vacuum-cleaner Romba J5 combo (vacuum+mop). Mop put aside this is a very inteligent vacuum robot! Sensors, camera and sensors again. It even has an adjustable flashlight!
So the robot it's self it's well built with a nice graphite finish and surprisingly light weight. Suction power it's not the strongest out there but the V shaped roller makes up for it and i'm telling you this picks up dirt like a champ!
The mop part of it well i find it still in it's inception so not much to say about it. While i like the fact that you can attach the mop bin and the robot will do both Vacuum + Mop in the same time i wouldn't use it too much for the mop part. It's ok to wipe the floor but you have to find a way to really mop your floors.
On the App/Ai/obstacle avoidance and Auto-detection this Romba j5 it does shine bright! I think it's the best robot cleaner i ever encountered so far! It's fast and does an excelent job at detecting objects returning to base etc!
Make sure BEFORE you start cleaning to commence a full charge on it (aprox.1 hr /20min in my case) then attaching the vacuum bin(it does it faster this way) RUN A MAPPING on your area (2 TIMES) it will bang and be a little chaotic till it registers everything but then when you send it to actual clean, it's the only way to get the most out of it!
It will automatically define your rooms but you can change that and i recomand you do so and draw the lines where you have hallways, rooms, kitchen etc. and you will enjoy it much more. The App it's very user friendly and i recommend you explore it, it has a lot of customizations and they all help for a better experience!
