This Roomba J5+ combo self emptying robot vacuum is so much more than I expected. The app, which allows for many options like schedules, no go zones, room dividers, object detection, and has an intelligent navigation and mapping system which ensures efficient room coverage without missing spots. I am especially excited about the object detection. It learns what objects should or shouldn't be on the floor based on pictures it takes for you to review and then knows which should or shouldn't be there. It also provides photographic evidence of who is leaving stuff on the floor to assist in household debates. You can even set it up to work with Siri and or Alexa by voice command. How cool!? I also love the mopping function. It's more like a wet drag of a cleaning pad but for me, I wasn't expecting a deep clean, just remove the surface dirt and mud that the dogs bring in and it absolutely does that in nice straight lines along my wood floors, AND it vacuums while it is mopping! I set a schedule using the app which has the vacuum cleaning my whole middle floor M/W/F in the middle of the day so the rooms are bright which helps the robot view a little better. The robot even knew the dog food bowls and asked if I wanted the robot to avoid them. I have run 3 cycles and it has yet to get stuck on any object on the ground and instead just takes a picture to remind you that there are objects on the floor for you to review. Another feature that sold me on this was the self emptying dust bin. I have dogs and my previous robot dust bin would fill up after every cleaning and I would have to empty it and that eliminates the purpose of the set it and forget cleaning approach. Sure the large dust bin needs emptying eventually but I can do that weekly or more. A couple things I don't like, vacuum bags and the sound of emptying the dust bin. First the sound, it sounds like a jet engine turning up, lasts only 3-5 seconds but you've been warned. Not a big deal, just caught me off guard. The vacuum bags are an annoyance and are wasteful. They lock in with a plastic clip and are relatively small. I would suggest environmentally the company just use a reusable internal dust bin rather than creating plastic trash. Overall, I love this vacuum. It cleans thoroughly, is capable of mopping and vacuuming at the same time, and I don't have to put much thought into my floor being clean and they just are which is awesome and makes my life simpler. Win.

The Roomba Combo J5+ has made significant strides over previous models. We’ve been Roomba owners for almost 20 years now. Our last one survived 10 years, so sticking with Roomba was an easy decision. When needed I’ve been able to get replacement parts easily, so spending a bit more with a company that’s there with you in the long term, makes perfect sense. With pets, the amount of time cleaning up drove us to initially purchase a Roomba. Now we really appreciate the convenience. Once unboxed, I placed it on the home base and loaded the app on my phone. I missed the lack of printed instructions, and found the manual on the website. Once fully charged, it embarked on its mapping run. It took about 2 hours for 1,600 sq ft. floorplan. During that run, it managed to avoid wires, throw rugs, shoes etc., that would trip up the older models. Ahh, so much smarter! Opening up the map to edit, I was amazed that it properly identified most rooms like the kitchen, dining room, bedroom, office and hallways. After a few updates to the map, I added it to Google Home. We now asked Google to tell Rosey, (yep you name it for automation systems), to vacuum the kitchen. We watched as it grabbed all the dust bunnies, etc., went over the floor twice in an overlapping pattern, and then docked itself. Then comes the roar of the self-emptying system. A notification in the app telling us that it emptied the bin. After that we sent it along to the rest of the house, mostly carpeted. Again, it really shined. With the ability to set a schedule, select rooms, automate the process to your coming and goings, it’s extremely versatile and unintrusive. The mopping feature is a great time saver. It left our tiled kitchen floor nice and clean. Smart enough to avoid the throw rugs, we didn’t have to chase it around prepping for the cleaning. It supports a long list of cleaning solutions, so you’re not tied to a specific brand. It’s a great time saver and with the latest smarts, it will be a great addition to your home. We love it!

I received this iRobot Roomba J5+ vacuum and wet mop to evaluate and review. I had a very early Roomba version years ago and found it helpful but somewhat problematic as it often got stuck in places and was hard to find to correct. The new Roomba J5+ combination vacuum/wet mop has overcome all of those issues and is now a great addition to our house. Before using, the Roomba must be charged and once charged begins to map your house before initiating the first vacuuming. It took about 3 hours for the Roomba to map our 3700 sf house and needed to recharge itself before beginning the first vacuum event. It took around 3 hours to fully recharge. The first vaccuming was incomplete as it got very full with dust and debris it found under beds that hadn't been vacuumed in several years. I manually had to pull a lot of dustballs out of it as they exceeded the onboard capacity of the vacuum debris storage. Normally, the vacuum would go home and dock itself when a job was completed and the base unit suctions out the debris in the unit so it is empty before going out for another vacuuming. The second vacuuming of the house went much quicker and smoother with few issues. The Ropmba J5+ was always able to get unstuck when it boxed itself inmto a corner, under a chair or tangled with a cord or rug. I am very impressed with how it works, how detailed the mapping is and all of the options available to control and schedule the vacuum and mopping jobs. By the way, the Roomba J5+ is able to vacuum and wet mop at the same time! Awesome. iRobot has an application you can download for your smarphone that shows the map made by the J5+ Roomba Combo and allows you to name the rooms, hallways, etc. so you can later send the unit to a specific room to just clean it. What an amazing machine and a wonderful addition to our home!

Great little Robotvac w/good sensors, easy to use

iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum & Mop The Roomba Combo J5+ is a great little robot vac that self-empties and has a good amount of smarts built in. The dustbin can be swapped out with a little wet mop and small dustbin vac attachment. I think of the mop more as a damp hard flood dusting instead of what some might think of as mopping since there are no agitators but more on that later. First up the little robot needs to map the house. iRobot does the smart thing by just sending the little vac around mapping the house, no need to waste battery doing other things just send it out to map. If you didn’t charge it enough or you have an extremely large place it will return to base to charge up then go back to where it left off. After mapping is complete you can name the rooms, block areas and map no mop zones. Vacuuming, this is where this little bot shines. It is good at avoiding obstacles and going over throw rugs and has a pretty low profile so it can get under things. The vac is surprisingly quite most robot vacs I have used in the past are very noisy and you really don’t want to schedule them in the rooms you are doing stuff or if someone is taking a nap. But the J5+ had a very reasonable noise level but don’t worry if it gets stuck it will alert you on your phone or tablet app. I never had to get mine out of a jam it is that good at avoiding stuff including when you have cables or wires around or a sock nest or other temporary or permanent obstacles. After the first vacuuming it will ask for you to review obstacles it didn’t understand to let it know if these are permanent and it should set up a blocked area or temporary and it will see if it moves or is removed next time. You can use google assistant or Amazon Alexa voice assistants to tell your little bot what to do. You can make a cleaning schedule or even set things up so it starts when you leave your home or if it is still cleaning when you get back it will ask you if you want it to continue or go back to base. It will also integrate with several other home automation apps. And yes it does to a good job vacuuming on both hard surfaces and carpet. It is good at transitioning over varying levels and transitions. I have some anti fatigue floor mats in my hard surface kitchen and it proceeded over them with out any effort. It even backed up and re-vacuumed some surfaces that it left a little spot of something behind getting it up the second time. I would say the sensors are very good for doing the best job as well as mapping and avoidance. It will go back to base to empty the dustbin when needed and then go continue where it left off. It is pretty good at figuring out when it runs low on battery and cleans some back close to base prior to plugging in for a recharge then going out to returning to areas it still needed to complete. As far as the dirt collection in the base I have mixed feelings. It uses a throw away bag to collect the dirt and gives you a secondary bag until you can order some more. I have had other robot vacs that have a dirt cup that pops out to throw the dirt away. The dirt cup is less wasteful but has more opportunities to give back dust and allergens back to the air which the disposable bag does not. The mopping requires on the J5+ combo requires you to load the combo software prior to using the first time. And you have to swap out the dustbin for a mop tank with small dustbin. The mopping is really a damp mop dusting since it does not have an agitator. If you setup a no mop zone and these areas are on the carpet areas surrounding the hard floor area the little bot will tell you it can’t get there and it is blocked. You can pick up the bot and relocate it to the blocked area and it will mop it then return to the area you dropped it off at when finished. Since this bot does not retract the mopping equipment it is making sure you don’t get areas damp on the rug areas. Depending on your carpet material you may or may not be concerned about the damp cloth going across these areas while it goes to a mop zone. To mop things correctly you really need a dedicated mop robot, after all look at what it takes to make a mop machine that does a good mop job. I did like a feature not available on the J5+ that I had on another botvac where the map shows where the robot is when doing it work. Instead the J5+ only tells you the room it is working on or if it is traveling to or from an area. Is that a big deal? That is for your taste. iRobot does do updates for efficiency, abilities and other improvements both to the bot and to the app interface. I like that I can use the larger interface on my tablet to alter the maps and work with the bot. I can also use it on my phone for automation when not at home or on trips. I keep waiting for someone to come up with an app for a desktop or laptop computer. I guess I am spoiled by large territory.

This is my first iRobot product, but not my first robovac. This is my fourth robot vacuum and my second with mop feature. This is the first one with an auto-empty feature that I've felt was sorely needed in the others. The J5+ is right in the middle of the price range given its feature set. I'm happy to note, the Roomba came with everything put together right out of the box. They give you an extra filter for the dust chamber and an extra brush tool; no complimentary floor cleaner though (unlike competitors). The Roomba connected easily to the app and was ready to map the house, after charging of course. While mapping the house, it kind of haphazardly went in and out of rooms without fully exploring them, leaving some areas only partially mapped. As a result, I had to do a second mapping to get a better blueprint, even then, one room was nearly entirely left out. Programming new jobs was easy enough, although, it would've been nice to be able to pick the rooms to clean on a map instead of the list of names. It's first run encountered an issue; it got stuck going over a threshold and stopped in the hallway. When I created a new job, it went about and when finished, went back to the spot in the hallway. A clear and evident omission in the app is the lack of go home button. The vac apparently forgot where home was and updated its map to the hallway location instead. I had to physically lift it and place it back on the charge pad to reorient it. The next few times were much better and the Roomba went where I sent it, cleaned at a faster pace than my other, equally priced unit, though apparently finished at the same time, likely due to its slightly smaller rollers. I haven't noticed any difference with obstacle avoidance on this unit compared to the other, though, to its detriment, I found it bumping up against the same spots multiple times before going around. It does a relatively good job self-emptying the bin making a sound akin to a jet engine spooling up. The mop feature is underwhelming by comparison. The pad is almost half the size of my other unit and sits stationary, whereas my other unit swishes from side to side while in motion. One thing I found troubling is that the Roomba doesn't appear to have a fluid release mechanism; it just slowly trickles water out of the reservoir whether moving or not. I found that out the hard way when I went to check on it the following day and found a wet stain on the bamboo floor since the charge area doesn't fully cover the mop pad. There are no settings to change amount of solution released, nor settings for vacuum intensity, just whether you want one or two passes. I feel that though the product has come a long way as a brand, it's still lacking features included in other units of equal or lesser value. The app, while necessary and useful, could include better versatility and a go home button when it gets stuck or lost. I love the self-emptying feature and although you need to purchase filter bags rather than just empty a bin, it's worth it to not have to handle dust and animal hair every time. I f you're looking for a good robot vacuum that mops, this might not be for you. Get the J7+ or J9+ as they might fare better. This unit is great for its self-emptying receptacle.

Hello friends this is my review of the iRobot roomba combo j5+ self emptying robot vacuum and mop. That's a mouthful to say so from here on i will say j5+ instead. I have personally been a big fan of the iRobot company for a very long time. I purchased my first robot from them almost 20 years ago when their second gen robot came out. At that time the robots were pretty basic compared to today. The robots did not connect to your device or go back to its charger. Today's models are so much more user friendly and a lot more powerful. I know i really like this new style of robot that iRobot has rolled out over the last couple of years. First off these robots not only can start from the charger but also return there once the battery is depleted. But also these new designs can empty themselves into the base. This means you only have to do maintenance on the robot every few weeks or so. Also iRobot made a great effort to make these machines easy to maintain. The vacuum rollers do not require tools to remove. And most other normally cleaned parts on the robot are super easy to access and clean. This makes it easy for the end user. If you are like me and have a pet in the home this j5+ will be super helpful for you. I had been running my regular vacuum 3 times a week to get all pet hair. Now i only run my large vacuum once a week or less. Pet hair and human hair are both captured by the new j5+ and sent to the bin at the base daily. Then when needed i can swap the dust bin for the mop bin and get a sqeeky clean floor when i return home. For me i only have one small complaint about the j5+. When using the mop bin, i have a little bit of leakage of the floor cleaner out of the bin. This is due to the design of this bin. It is designed to wick the fluid out to the mop head. So if you leave the bin for to long without running it it will leak a little. Not a big problem just something to be aware of. In conclusion i would say the j5+ is a winner. If you have a need for a vac and mop robot you can't go wrong with the j5+. That is unless you can move up to the j7+ which is superior to this robot. Will i be recommending this j5+ to my friends and family? Yes i will!

I have used about half-dozen robot vacuum cleaners, including models that also mopped, over the last decade or so, and they all do pretty much what they’re supposed to. Some are more sophisticated than others in such things as whether or not a smartphone app is available to control the robot, whether or not it can map and remember the floor plan of your residence, how well it does on carpets, battery life, and so forth. I have to say that this iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum & Mop is about the best I have used. Overall, it just seems “smarter,” and it has some nice features that I’ve not seen until now. One thing I’ll point out right now is that it handles my somewhat-thick but not-quite-shag carpets very well. As far as setup, it’s typical. Download an app, have the app find your robot, and follow the setup instructions. Then you proceed to an initial clean where the robot maps your floor plan and retains the map for future use. The instructions are very hand-holding in nature, so it’s difficult to go wrong. The first thing you are told to do is have the robot do an initial clean and mapping run. This is done immediately without waiting for the robot to charge up its battery on its base station. It just starts the process with however much charge is in the battery as it comes out of the box. If there’s not enough charge to complete the process, the robot stops the mapping and returns to the base station to recharge, and then it goes out again to continue mapping. My house is about 1800 square feet, and I had the robot map pretty much all of it. That floor space is about 40% carpeted and 60% wood floors. Overall, it took the robot about six hours to fully map the floor, returning to the base to recharge a couple of times along the way. Each recharge session took about 90 mintues (the app indicates down to the minute how long it will take to recharge and when the robot will resume its work), so, of the six hours to map the house, only about half of that was time when the robot was actually out roaming around the house. The other half of the time, it was in its charging dock. Once the mapping is done, the app suggests doing a second cleaning and run to allow the robot to confirm the mapping of your house. This took a couple of hours. Once this is done, and the app keeps track of what you’ve done, the app suggests proceeding to setting up the mopping apparatus to let the robot do a mop of your hard floors. For this, you must block off any carpeted areas because the robot won’t stop at the carpet’s edge. There is a second attachment to which you attach a mop pad and fill with water, and the robot quickly mops the floor. This was done, in my case, in about half an hour. This robot is “self-emptying,” which means that, when it finishes a vacuuming operation, a fan is activated for about 10 seconds (and it makes enough noise to wake the dead) that blows the collected dust out of the collection bin into what is essentially a small vacuum-cleaner bag housed in a compartment on the base station. It’s really very nice, because having to constantly pause a robot vacuum to empty a full dust bin is one of the annoyances of robot vacuums I’ve encountered. No such issue here. Another thing about the self-emptying feature is that the robot doesn’t just do it at the end of a cleaning run. Rather, it keeps track of how much dust has collected in the bin and, when full, it pauses cleaning wherever it is in the house, goes back to the base station, and does the self-emptying operation. Then it resumes vacuuming. As I said, this robot is pretty smart. But keep in mind that the vacuum cleaner bags are not empty-able, so you’ll have to keep extras on hand to replace them as they get filled up. The robot comes with two of these bags, and two cleanings of my house were enought to fill one of them about half way. So I’ll be buying these bags fairly regularly, but I’d be buying bags regularly for a conventional vacuum cleaner as well. It’s a very small price to pay, in my opinion, in exchange for not having to empty dust collection bins all the time. If you get one of these, you will not be disappointed. It works well, there is good communication between the app and the robot, and there’s nothing I’m more glad to give up than regular vacuuming and mopping of my floors.

My wife is absolutely in love with this little machine. We’ve tried other robots to vacuum and have had mixed results. The biggest issue for us has by far been that we have little kids at home so that it makes it hard to trust that things will work out with toys and other stuff left on the floor that really shouldn’t be left to a Roomba to clean up. This model comes with a sensor to avoid objects. We ran it through a number of tests and it did surprisingly well. Toys and clothes were avoided. Hair clips were 50/50 depending on the exact size and how flat it was laying down. It couldn’t sense most of the paper pieces, but never had an issue with anything getting clogged or having an issue because it ran over it. In fact most of the papers just kind of got pushed forward by the vacuum and moved around the room a bit. A few full sized sheets got ran over, and we thought they’d get stuck, but it just moved on. We were pleased with the fall weather that it seemed to get all the leaves dragged in by our dog and not avoid them. Cords were avoided pretty well for the most part, nothing got caught in a machine, but most of our cords are behind furniture anyway. I liked how it figured out where chairs and furniture were and was able to slow down, nudge it then work around it. I sometimes got nervous that something would get dented or scraped if left where a Roomba was going to run. Our dog is pretty well trained and she’s kept in her own area when we’re not home and at night, so I’m not too concerned about the feared poopocolyps, but there is a little bit of comfort in knowing that this model should sense things just in case we have an unusual situation. Our home is split up into a few different levels which makes it hard to just set up the unit and let it run and take care of a large part of our home. We can set things up and move the vacuum and base around, but it starts to be a hassle. However, while we seem to keep up on vacuuming and sweeping pretty well anyway, we really don’t do a great job of mopping. We were excited to be able to set the dining room chairs on the table and let it take care of the hardwood floors overnight. Just hoping to get the drips or stickiness from our kids’ messy eating. We’re probably going to have it set in the hardwood area to take care of that automatically every night and then manually move it around the house to take care of vacuuming as needed, but it still saves us a lot of hassel. On the first run, it had been a while since we mopped, and it helped, but there was a lot left to be desired. I was happy that it didn’t feel too wet so I’m not super worried about the hardwood getting damaged. I think on multiple runs it may even get everything entirely clean, but it may just not have enough scrubbing power for that. We mopped the floor ourselves and then let it run a few nights to just keep up with things and it seems to be doing fairly well. Overall this model is a great machine. It vacuums well and has some great upgrades from what I’ve seen with previous models or other brands. The moping function just takes it to the next level and makes this one of the best cleaning robots I’ve seen

J5+ Helpful Robot for Daily Clean-up

The iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ is a robot vacuum and mop that is a nice entry into robot vacuum cleaners. This is my first attempt at using a robot vacuum in nearly 6 years as I found they weren't nearly as good as using a regular vacuum. While I liked the time savings, what's the point if your floor cleanliness is mediocre and your robot never makes it back to the base -- well, times have changed and I'm really happy with the j5+. Regarding the vacuum, there isn't much to say here -- it took some time to adjust to a robot, and I like to simply tidy up as much as possible, including moving some items to different corners every other week -- the j5+ adjusts well and leave the floors much cleaner than I expected from a non-traditional vacuum. And I've been able to get more than a month out of the self-cleaning bin, which takes all of the dirt and deposits it into a bag, so the robot is always ready to go -- that's a really impressive feature. I usually just sweep my regular non-carpet floors, so the mopping option is incredibly helpful. Lately I've been moving the chairs out of the way so the j5+ can do it's thing -- because having freshly mopped floors really improves the overlook of the kitchen. It's a nice bonus touch that I really didn't expect to use much. I was also concerned about the risk of moldy water, as my research uncovered this issue with other brands, but not with the j5+. Along the lines of research, it seems the j5+ (while being more affordable than the j7+) still offers many of the same features, such as self-emptying and smart mapping. So lots of great value. One differentiating feature that some people said was missing from the j5+ was the carpet detection, resulting in with wet floors, but I haven't had that issue. There is a rather noticeable difference between my floors and carpet, but I also set the app with the location of my carpet, just to be safe. Something to keep an eye on, but not a problem for me. One feature that I think will be of particular value, is the option to clear certain areas through Alexa. So after the kids make cereal or eat bagels, I can ask the Roomba to vacuum under the table. In the spring, especially when ants tend to show up, this feature will be one of my go-to's. I have been happy about many features that some have complained about, as they seem to be blown out of proportion. Whether issues have been resolved due to updates in the software or others have had subpar experiences due to the layout of their house, I'm just really happy that I decided on this model as it leaves my house much better than how I left it.

Overall it’s hard for me to recommend this as there other robot vacuums on the market with more up to date features at a similar or lower price point. - Unboxing and setup required taking out the vacuum before the charging station. A couple of the smaller boxes weren't labeled to know what was inside each. - Mapping function: The very first time the mapping function stopped after only a couple of rooms without any indication as to why and even with plenty of battery charge still remaining. After placing the unit in another room and restarting the mapping function, it did a great job mapping the entire floor, including the rooms from the first attempt. It looks like additional maps can be added, for example to map a different floor, but I didn't try this and I would expect that the charging station would need to be moved to each floor. - Vacuum function: The unit is quite loud when it vacuums, but the cleaning power is fairly weak and disappointing, especially with edge cleaning, as it missed picking up hair and dust in several spots in the main area and along edges. - The corner brush would spin infrequently, so it's not clear what the unit uses the brush for. - Using the 2-pass (maximum) cleaning for a specific room didn't make a difference with the cleaning outcome, even though it seemed like the unit took more than 2 passes. - On the plus side, the product did a good job maneuvering around furniture, chairs, wires and other objects, such as support wedges under the bed. - Mopping function: Setting the unit up for mopping is quite easy by simply swapping the bins. But mopping is also disappointingly weak with this model as it does a very light duty mopping of the area that's done by basically dragging a wet pad across the floor. It's supposed to vacuum and mop with the mop bin attached, so I expected that it will go to the base and self-empty the dirt that it collected but it didn't, and the bin had to be emptied manually. - iRobot app/software: The app is quite good as it's easy to use for making changes to room labels & dividers, adding cleaning, keep-out and no-mop zones, scheduling cleaning, favorite and on-demand jobs. But, the Product Health function didn't work as it would just give a pop-up message that it will be available shortly. - Docking/self-empty station: The station is nice aesthetically and compact. The unit was able to return for redocking, except a couple of times the unit seemed to get lost or confused of its location when it started a job. One thing that happened is that a no-mop zone blocked the unit from going back to the charging base, but instead of announcing it needs help, it kept trying to return endlessly going back and forth from one side and then another. - The self-emptying process is quite loud (just below 90dB)!

I have 3 little kids that are messy. They drop food and crumbs and bring in dirt from outside on their shoes. This vacuum works miracles for me. I wake up early get kids ready for school and daycare and get home late from work and i dont have time to sweep and mop up every mess. With this vacuume i just need to do a quick pickup around the house and let the vaccume do the rest. I used the mop function only once and wasn't to impressed. But the vaccume and sweep functions are amazing. This makes my life easier. Great purchase!

Automated robot cleaning technology just keeps getting better and better as do the associated apps. You will need to install said app from the appropriate app store in order to get it setup on the network. After it finishes charging, you will want to let it proceed with an Initial mapping/cleaning job. I have an older robot of a different brand that always seems to get stuck at some point during the vacuuming cycle but not this new iRobot Roomba J5+. Although it did make two trips back to home base to recharge and empty it's dustbin, it never got stuck but it did do very good of cleaning. I kept waiting for one of our cats to climb aboard for a ride but they carefully avoided the bot - oh well. Although this variety will mop your floor, too, you have to fill the mop module with water and/or cleaning fluid then exchange the mopping module for the dust module first. Once that job is complete, just do another swap and then clean out the mop module. Every once in a while, you will to empty the dust bag and clean it. What a cool device!

It does a decent job (except in corners or close to base boards/walls) vacuuming but not great at mopping. It barely mopes but moreso leaves a streak of water on the floor. The pad is super thin so can not possibly absorb much from a mopping perspective.

I really like the features of the Roomba except that 24 days in it started making a horrible squeaky sound like a rusty wheel and I called for support and they said it needs to be repaired. Wheels need to be replaced. I’m not OK with that because it’s $700 purchase 24 days in it already needs replaced wheels.

Amazing! It helps maintain the house clean and it helps me be guilt free from not vacuuming! I love the wireless activation and the settings where I can set a double clean or set a specific room to be cleaned.
