Works great
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works great regardless of the surface type. Does take a little bit of time to get used to though, as it keeps wandering about the space trying to map things out.

I5 Roomba Robot is a Piece of Junk
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Roomba is horrible, don’t buy. The whole point of replacing my 980 Roomba was the former was worn out. The i5 gets confused and 3 out of 5 cleanings fail. Continuing on point was to have the i5 clean by itself without my assistance, but no I have to reboot, restart, redo most jobs. Taking the whole day to complete 1 job. It constantly gets confused, goes offline and if it does restart, it looses its mind and goes wherever it pleases and not where it is programmed to go. I feel like picking it up and throwing it into the street. Hopefully, you will have better luck with it than I have. I wish I hadn’t discarded my old Roomba.

Self-emptying Roomba with Mapping
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Roomba i5+ self-emptying vacuum robot is very convenient with its app control and ability to empty itself. It is also much nicer looking than some of our other vacuum robots (we have eight currently in our home). The app pulled in the maps from another Roomba and sent them to the new robot, which took a couple of extra minutes to orient itself on its first run. I was able to set it off to clean specific rooms. The battery power was sufficient to clean our whole first floor. It did not get stuck anywhere while cleaning, and many of our other robots get stuck here and there. On docking, it made a loud suction sound for several seconds. An extra vacuum bag was included, but you can order more. From prior experience, the bags last long. It's difficult to judge how much it picks up on a particular run because once it has docked, the auto-emptying feature doesn't allow you to look in the dustbin to check because it is empty, but frequently, you can hear the stuff it picked up empty. Pros -------- Self-emptying Automatic cleaning Mapping and room selection Voice control with Google Assistant (our cable TV remote can work it) It avoids common obstacles and gets stuck less. Cons ------- It’s a little noisy while vacuuming (but it can run while away) You'll still want to use a regular vacuum occasionally (the dust collection bin on that will indicate what’s being missed)

Multiple maps??
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was reflecting recently on my history with Robot vacuums. It started back in 2017 with iRobot, and since then I've had several vacuums from a few different brands, one of which has ceased to exist. In my house, we name our robot helpers, the first named Lincoln after the street we lived on when the kids were first born. We named our first bot Lincoln in remembrance of that house. Since then, we've continued to name our robots increasing one letter at a time, and our i5+ was donned the name "Quark." So you'd think then I've had 6 robot vacuums since 2017, but indeed, the true count is 7 due to a manufacturing error in our first "M" robot "Meep." But here's the point: I've owned 7 robot vacuums in 8 years, making this a somewhat expensive habit. My first bot Lincoln was also a Roomba, and it was only this past winter that we had to send him on to robot heaven. It was a resilient machine, and although its battery was awful toward the end, it worked for a long time. And probably, it could have worked for longer but the 2017 vacuum technology, compatibility with apps, and other missing features made it not worth the repair. Our house is great but has an annoying layout with two "levels" on the first floor. We were in need of a robot to patrol the higher of those two levels, and our new housemate Quark has filled that role nicely. If you're looking for a robot vacuum, I'd HIGHLY suggest investing in one with a self-emptying tank. This particular tank has bags as well, so you don't have to worry as much about dumping dusty plastic bins out and making a mess-- just pull the bag and toss it. The only downside here is the need to buy additional bags. The iRobot app has stayed largely the same over the last several years, which could be good or bad depending on the audience. Like other robot vacuum apps, it has a section to store "Maps" (which is what it is labeled in the app), but is actually incapable of storing multiple maps: you are limited to only one. This seems a standard oversight with app makers for robot vacuums, and it annoys me. And maybe you're wondering, "Why would you need multiple maps?" I recognize I'm fortunate enough to be able to own multiple vacuums for my multi-level household, but I gather not everyone fits into that category. Sure, you'd be limited to some degree on the automatic return to home base, but it would be great to see an option to set the little guy in a one-off room on a different level to handle spot cleaning. Setup was very easy: Plug it in, charge it up, download the app, connect the bot to wifi, and set it on a mapping run to build the initial map. Once built, the map can be divided into rooms for more targeted cleaning. The app allows the creation of multiple routines ("Favorites") wherein you can have a subset of the rooms cleaned at the push of a button. You can also set schedules to clean any or all areas based upon a preset timeframe. The app also supports geofencing and can trigger the bot to clean after you leave the house. Because iRobot is one of the OG's in the market, and because I had a great experience with my first Roomba, I'm excited to have it back in the house. It's done a wonderful job in the first several runs, and I'd imagine it will be around for many years to come. I think it's worth noting that Quark has a very similar physical design to it's older counterpart Lincoln, which I'm sure makes the cost for repair much lower than if the designs were constantly changing. The price for entry here is $500, which is not a small investment. A decent manual vacuum will be $250-$350 and far more versatile, but it's hard to beat convenience. The Roomba's price tag is about what I'd expect for a well-designed robot with a 5ish year lifespan that also includes a self-emptying function. The only real demerit here is the lack of support for multiple maps. And while I don't think is a strictly "iRobot" problem, someone has to step up and address it.
