I’ve owned several Roombas over the years. 4 to be exact and I’ve had problems with all of them. I have serious mobility problems though, and can’t use a normal vacuum. Each time one failed and the replacement battery didn’t work or didn’t last, etc. I told myself I'm sure the next one will be OK. The Roomba i5 has turned out to be the worst. The fact that the manual must be found online is the first clue. It is not possible to find that manual despite there being a QR code to link to the site. Next it only had a 14 day return period. I’m old. I’m incapacitated. I’m a fool. I believed a company would not take advantage of its customers. Just call me Charlie Brown.

I was excited to finally get a roomba, but I was disappointed with the i5. It didn't pick up much, and it randomly wanders instead of going in a grid pattern and constantly bumps into everything. After knocking down an irreplaceable vase, back it went.

This is my 3rd cleaning robot. I've always wanted to have 2, one for upstairs and one for downstairs since they haven't yet invented the ability for these automated little pals to climb up and do another floor. I used this to replace an older Roomba unit upstairs that after several years of service was starting to show its age. This has been a great replacement as the older one has shuffled off into retirement. It was very easy to set up and use. You will start off with a mapping run of the area. It's very intuitive when mapping, but if it fits under something, it will go there. So, if you don't want it to go under a tv stand or any other such furniture where it could get stuck or mess with cords, you should put cardboard or a towel or something there so it doesn't sense the open space. Once the mapping is done, it'll go back to the base and be ready to go. I run my Roomba on a schedule. 3 times per week, generally during the day while I am gone to work. I have one dog who does shed but is shorter hair and not a huge shedder. By running the unit this frequently, it's able to keep up. This is not meant to be a heavy mess cleaner, it's meant to maintain, and when you think about it like that and schedule it for frequent runs, it will keep your floors nice and tidy on an automated schedule. The self emptying is a HUGE bonus and I cannot recommend it enough! If the unit gets full without this piece, it will simply stop working until you are able to clean it out. With the self emptying stand, it'll go home, empty out, pick up where it left off. The stand needs to be emptied, I would guess based on the week I've had this that you would empty the stand every 4-6 weeks or maybe even longer. Overall, I love my little automated cleaning robot, he does a great job when you've set him up on a good, frequent schedule, and I basically never have to pick up a real vacuum again!

iRobot i5+ Roomba Vacuum + Self-Emptying This is a powerful and useful Robot Vacuum! Like most robot vacuums, it will adjust to different floor types as it’s working, but the iRobot+ 5 does it very well judging from my experience with it. It has no trouble tracking from a hard surface to carpet and then even onto an area rug lying on the carpet! It will map the area as it’s moving (where I use it is in the master bedroom, master closet and master bathroom – this on-suite is separated from the rest of the house) or a larger area rather quickly and then head off to do its job. Once it’s done the job it also “remembers” spatially where it cleaned so that it will simply repeat this again the next time you need it. This “mapping” also enables you to direct it to only a specific room or area from the original job, if you need that later. Of course, it will adapt its map if something changes later in the same area. And, what everyone really wants to know, it does an excellent job of cleaning the floors – lint, hair, dirt in general, all things are efficiently vacuumed up. If it senses that a particular area is extra dirty, it will clean that area more thoroughly all by itself. When it’s done with the designated area, it returns to its base to recharge and to empty its debris box into the silo that’s part of the charging station. The silo holds a good-sized vacuum bag so that it doesn’t require emptying very often. Once nice touch I thought was when you open the silo from the top, the bag in use is hooked up on the right side and on the left side is where the extra vacuum bags are stored so you don’t have to go looking for them if a bag change is required. There is a Roomba app for your smartphone that enables you to schedule how, when and where you want your iRobot i5+ to clean, whether you’re home or not. It also responds to Alexa or Siri if you’re into voice control. My only problem with the i5+ is that I was unable to activate the app. After you download it, you have to sign in to your Roomba account or create one. I didn’t have one (or it was so long ago that any former account wasn’t recognized) so I gave it my email address and set up a password – but to do that, it had to send me a verification code to enter to finish my account setup. Although I triple-checked that my email address was correct, I could never receive a code, so I wasn’t able to complete the account to start the application. I tried multiple times over different days but no love. I realize this isn’t the i5+’s fault (it’s an excellent robot vacuum), but there is some glitch somewhere that I haven’t cleared up yet. For me personally, it’s not a problem because I seldom use an app for a robot vacuum. For the purpose of this review, I’m unable to give you any detail about the finer points of the app at this time due to this glitch. Bottomline is that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the iRobot Roomba i5+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum. It’s a really good vacuum!

This is my second roomba vacuum, I have an i3 as well, and I am loving this vacuum even more than my other one. The packaging is a bit bulky with lots of empty space full of cardboard, but once I got the product out, it was pretty quick and easy to set up. The box includes the vacuum, the charging/emptying station, and the power cord. Unfortunately, unlike my i3, this one did not come with a second air filter replacement but it did come with a second bag for the disposal bin. Since I already own a roomba vacuum, I had the app already set up and adding a second device was an absolute breeze. If this is your first time, there is a simple QR code to scan that will walk you through the app set up and get you rolling quickly. One thing to note on setup, this vacuum does not support 5ghz wifi connection, so you’ll have to set your wifi to 2.4 temporarily during setup to get the best results. Once I was connected, I was able to change my wifi settings back to both 5 and 2.4 and have had no connection issues. With a charging station location picked out, I set the robot up to charge and waited before running it’s first clean and mapping. Originally my i3 did not come with the mapping options, but it has sense gotten an update so now both my upstairs and downstairs vacuums will have mapping capabilities which is nice. It also cleans in straight rows so on carpet, you will see those satisfying lines when it’s all done. I sent the new vacuum off on a it’s first journey and just like my older roomba, it gently poked around and looked for edges all while creating an internal map to reference before hitting top speed and doing some cleaning. I left some small charging cables and dog toys out as well as some loose wires to see what would happen and the robot never got tangled up, but it did occasionally get a cable under it’s wheel and drag it around a bit before getting dislodged. I am never a fan of “risking it” for cables so I usually pick them up anyway, but it was nice to know it wouldn’t get too bad if I forget or miss a cable. I set the robot to do 2 passes, plus a mapping, so about 1.5 hours in it returned to home to recharge before finishing the job. The charge took about an hour or so and then the job only needed about 5 more minutes to finish. This was cleaning my entire main floor which is quite large, plus 2 passes. I think that’s a decent time, and if I chose to let the robot decide how many passes are needed based on time and size, I’m pretty sure it could hit my main level in one charge. When it returned to base to recharge, it also emptied the bin, which should be noted, does sort of sound like a jet taking off in your living room. It’s not a quiet operation, so even if the vacuum is not too loud, the bin emptying may be too loud for running at night unless your base is located far from your room or you’re a heavy sleeper. The first time I heard it and didn’t know what it was, it was a bit jarring, but when the robot finished the job and emptied again, I still heard it plenty loud, but it wasn’t that shocking since I knew what it was. I just think it’s worth noting that it’s a rather loud operation. The app has come a long way since I first got my i3. Now the mapping is much more user friendly and you can edit the boundaries and names and tell the robot to clean by room or set up more customized cleaning schedules and routines, plus it’s all integrated with alexa and google home, so you simply tell your assistant to tell the vacuum name to start and off they go, eating up all the little bits of dirt in your house. The app also includes a cleaning history and map of the cleaning as well as a breakdown of how long each step took, ie, cleaning, charging, paused, etc. I didn’t have a major mess to clean up as I had just vacuumed recently before testing this vac out, but it still managed to get a lot of dust and dirt from the carpets and hardwoods and the fancy brushes don’t get tangled in hair like my traditional vacuum does. The filter is easy to pop out and shake clean (it says do not wash) but the dust bin is washable which is nice. If you take care of the maintenance and maybe get a few filters to replace regularly, there’s no reason this vacuum shouldn’t be able to last you a very long time. I got my i3 4 years ago and it’s still working great and now I have 2 for my two story house so I don’t have to move one up and down. I highly recommend the roomba vacuum products, and this i5+ is no different. With the self emptying bag, the schedule cleaning and smart mapping capabilities, you can go from thinking about vacuuming once a week to thinking about it once a month.

    Nimble Mighty Vacuum

The outer shipping box for the Roomba came with a big Roomba company logo and SKU number and quantity. It was a bit heavier than expected but not bad. Heads up if you won't be home for the delivery, you can definitely tell what's in the box. There is an inner box that the robot is packaged in. All in all the shipping/packing of the vacuum was sturdy. Opening the box there are 1,2,3 instructions and each instruction has a sectioned off package/cardboard with its corresponding contents, as well as a getting started instruction card attached to box one. There is also the robot, charging station and power cord inside the box. The box for the power cord is way to large and super wasteful. As well as the other box that the power cord box is sitting in. They could really cut down on that and save space and waste.Box two literally did nothing but hold box one and its a large amount of cardboard that serves no purpose. Set up. Initial setup is pretty simple. Place the base and robot in a good wifi signal area and plug it in. Open the app to complete the setup. I had another roomba so for me it was the option to add your product and scan the QR code that was on the quick start guide. Pressed the home and spot buttons until the beep and the blue indicator light came on. Then continued with the remaining setup in the app. It was pretty simple. The base is large and sturdy, made from plastic. It has a plastic ramp for the vacuum to roll up on with a groove for the wheels. The top of the base is a trash bin that has an extra bag and one bag attached to a vacuum shoot type of bag for self emptying. The robot itself is a tad bit heavier than the i3. The main two wheels are robust and have great traction for better grip. The smaller wheels which aid in spinning are recessed in a bit. Otherwise it looks like all the other roombas and has the same three buttons. Vacuuming is noticeable but not too loud. It goes in a really weird pattern. Especially when it’s doing its discovery/mapping. I expected it to try and fit in a few places or get a bit closer to the wall where I thought it could fit, but it didn't. I just let it run and it went on for a few hours. It ran out of battery went to charge itself, emptied the bag, and went back to completing the job. Using it on both hardwood floors and carpet. With the wheels being large I did find it having trouble making it underneath some tight spots. On carpet, even thick carpet, the robust wheels really help it navigate through it. It does take a couple of hours for it to go through its route but it is extremely thorough. I do not mind it taking its time since it is cleaning for me. The vacuum is pretty much set and forget with it finding its way back to the base and emptying itself. The vacuum really is great and i find myself using it more frequently than I would manually vacuum. I love that I can either set a schedule or have it clean on demand. The app has options to set up different schedules which make it easy. It’s a must have product for me.
